    concrete 5/2025
    Tom Y.

When my sister and I decided to have concrete work done, we called Ecostar; our decision was based on a flyer we received at the front door. Our sales meeting with Tom Goldring convinced us that we made the right call. He was personable, knowledgeable, and attentive. After listening to our request, he gave us a few options. Once we decided on a plan, everything began to fall into place. Tom's timeline, total cost, and outcome were spot-on. He was in constant contact with us - in person, or by text, letting us know what has happened that day, and what will be happening over the next few days. On one or two occasions, Tom's supervisor, Jacob Suissa, showed up to give some suggestions, and to review the progress. He was friendly, respectful, and knowledgeable. When the crew showed up, everyone was efficient and professional. They were respectful of us and the neighbors, and always cleaned up each day. On the last day, they made sure the yard and surrounding area was clean and free of any debris or unused materials. It looked as though they had never been there. It seemed like, between Tom and Jacob, there was only one way to do the job......the right way. Although i don't remember them actually saying that, it seemed to be the theme of the whole job. Whenever we would tell Tom "thank you", his response was always "of course!" - with a smile. If and when we need any other work done, we will definitely call Ecostar, and cross our fingers that we have Tom as our guy again!

I recently had the pleasure of working with Eli and Tali from Ecostar for a large project in my front yard, and I couldn't be happier with the results! From start to finish, their professionalism and attention to detail were truly impressive. - **Expertise**: Eli and Tali brought a wealth of knowledge to the project, helping me choose the best options for my yard. Their suggestions really enhanced the overall design. - **Quality of Work**: The quality of their work is outstanding. They transformed my front yard into a beautiful space that I can enjoy for years to come. - **Communication**: Throughout the entire process, they communicated clearly and were always responsive to my questions and concerns. - **Timeliness**: They completed the project on schedule, which I really appreciated. I highly recommend Eli and Tali from Ecostar to anyone looking for reliable and skilled professionals for their landscaping projects. Thank you, Ecostar, for a job well done!

Pavers laid on side of the house.

EcoStar replied to my Yelp Project request for doing 700 square feet of pavers. They replied within 24 hours and upon my reply, arranged for phone contact. The job required removal of old red brick, removal of old leveling substrate, compacting the surface, distributing leveling sand, and installing the concrete pavers. Pavers were supplied by me. Removal of the old sand and bricks were done by EcoStar. They had the most reasonable quote and had someone (Eli) come out to measure and make sure that the scope of work was understood. I had purchased pavers for the project two years prior and just didn't have the time and energy to do the project myself. In retrospect, I should have allowed EcoStar to supply the pavers, as they would have been able to secure better materials than what I procured through Home Depot. Work was done by a small team and finished in a timely manner. Old bricks that had been removed were stacked nicely and then reused. My neighbors liked the work so much that they hired EcoStar, so I supplied my old bricks - reuse at its best. They did what they said they would and did a nice enough job to get the attention of the neighbors. I would likely call upon them in the future for other construction work.

I needed a tall custom window replaced in my Oakland home on a specific schedule due to roommates. EcoStar gave me an on-the-spot quote, I paid a deposit and a subcontractor came the next day to take measurements. I was told the window would take 3 weeks to arrive. In the meantime, the sales rep contacted me several times, wanting me to meet his boss on the day of installation which I found pushy and unwelcome. They wanted to offer me discounts on additional work which I explained I was not ready nor looking for more work right away. During installation, they asked for another payment. I noticed a 5% credit card surcharge, which is illegal in California as of July 2024 (Senate Bill 478). I had to cite the law, but the rep insisted it was disclosed, therefore permitted. Not true. After installation, upon examining the work, I noticed the window had a green tint that I did not request. Completely inappropriate for a north-facing small room with just one window and the scope of work DID state "clear" glass. On the same day, the rep urged me to sign their completion paperwork. When I explained that their contract says I have five days to use the product before signing their completion form, he persisted, wanting to know why I would not sign immediately. I then requested the manufacturer warranty, which their documents say I am entitled to. When I asked for a window brand name, I was told Premier Windows. I had to leave several additional voice mail requests, and then only received a vague one page warranty - with no brand mentioned - that arrived via text one full week later. This experience did not instill confidence. Afterward I checked the BBB and saw 8 complaints in three years. Most were met with defensive responses, rather than accountability. It seems clear this team does not understand the business concept of "the customer is always right." Between the sales pressure tactics, the questionable added surcharge (that was not on the original quote,) the lack of transparency about the manufacturer and the delayed product warranty, plus receiving a green-tinted window when I thought I was getting a clear window, I doubt I would work with EcoStar again. They did not offer the professionalism I initially thought I would receive.

After receiving a fair quote for installing a new stair rail Eli, Tony, and the Ecostar crew did a great Jon in executing the dismantling of the old stairs and the installation of the new. They were mindful of keeping the project site as clean as can be expected, and they completed the project in 2 days instead of the estimated 3. The quality of the work is very good, and I'll use this crew on future projects.

New garage ceiling! No more insulation to be seen!

Johnny and his team did a phenomenal job on all the projects we hired them for! We got a new roof on our garage, a new ceiling inside the garage, a 150ft of custom white picket fence in our front yard, and new door seals on our front and back doors, just in time for winter. The work was done impeccably and in a very timely fashion. We are so happy with the value and work quality. Not to mention that all the workers were so clean, polite, helpful and kind. Cannot recommend EcoStar and their financing programs enough. We are over the moon! Thank you Johnny! It's been a pleasure working with you and your team!

We worked with Johnny and redid our main floor bathroom. We started with a three legged, claw foot tub and a shower with four different decades worth of tile. We ended up with a gorgeous, functional space that feels more like a spa, versus a bathroom. The bid was accurate even when pipes needed to be moved, support beams changed. I appreciated that the bid took into account that our 1918 craftsman was probably going to have a few hiccups but that it wouldn't affect us, simply was handled. We started this in early January, our city took about a month for the permit and 4 weeks later we have wrapped it up. Our glass door will be installed in the morning. I recommend Johnny and Ecostar without hesitation and look forward to a 2025 kitchen remodel with them.

Open, clean, and very pleasing to work in my upgraded kitchen.

How long does a small bathroom remodel take from start to finish? Does Ecostar devote a crew to one project from beginning to end so that the work is finished in a timely manner rather than spreading their crews around on several projects?

Hi - we did ours in about six weeks, for two bathrooms. It was a bit longer than expected because the inspection/permit process was delayed by the City and work had to halt (not anyone's fault). And yes, one crew for the project. The crew was with… Read more

Having never done this before, I got about 3 different quotations, and eventually I settled on Remodeling Heroes as they had a decent track record and an acceptable price (for my bathroom remodel, this was in the low 30ks) Once settled, things started to get hairy. I had to navigate fairly onerous HOA requirements like FIIC for flooring (field impact insulation class for noise transmittance) and strict schedules for when workers were allowed to do demo work on the existing bathroom. I was able to work with Om (project manager) and Walter (foreman) to negotiate with the HOA and complete the demo within a day, after which came the longer process of slowly adding the required finishes. Finishes are probably what are most overlooked. I was able to get most of my finishes from East Star Building supply - which includes the tiles used. I opted for large ones for both the shower and the floor to reduce grout and thus the amount of cleaning needed. I also opted for a frameless shower with brass / brushed furnishes to keep maintenance low. Measurements were also complicated - I had to make sure everything would fit, and worked closely with Om and Walter to make sure it would work with the limited space available. I highly recommend working all these out long before demo and construction starts as it can be a very involved process. Eventually everything was neatly and installed and to spec, and inspection by the city was passed. There were complications with the HOA regarding onerous foam requirements for the baseboard but I was able to acquire the necessary form off Amazon so that was settled nicely. The only really hiccup came with the installation of the toilet, where there was some carelessness that led to water leaking to the unit below but fortunately we were able to get that sorted out. Overall it was a fairly stressful experience, but eventually the job was completed in a fairly tight timeline even with the struggles in satisfying the HOA. I have been quite pleased with the finished result, which is well done and so far has not shown any signs of water leaks. I love my new bathroom and am very happy with the result!

If…read moreyou've ever had a handy person or contractor do decent work but then you end up swearing for days or weeks because of the huge mess they left behind, your experience with Ace will be a ray of golden sunshine!!! Background: I live in a duplex with shared attic space; it was originally a single family residence with just one attic door. I wanted access to the attic without hassling my neighbors/tenants. Ace not only created a fantastically-functional attic opening, she also took the time and care to make it look beautiful (i.e. like it was part of the original house with decorative trim and multiple coats of paint). But the BEST PART is the care she took to protect my home and and that she left me with no clean-up chores. I've had so much work done on this home and previous homes (small jobs to remodels and major construction). And this is the first time that I've had this experience--of not cursing like a sailor at the dust or grime all over my stuff. Ace did a superb job of containing the dust when she had to drill and cut into the ceiling. I forgot what it's called, but she basically created a tent in the area where she needed to work. There was no drywall dust or sawdust in my storage room or near my laundry area. Bless her!!! She also helped me identify the source of some cracks in my ceiling. They were there before she started her work, so I cropped the photo of my new attic opening. Did I mention that she's nice, easy-going, and that she patiently answered all of my questions? Did I mention that she was very communicative and pro-active in giving me updates on her arrival time, etc.? If you haven't figured it out yet, I was and still am extremely freaking happy with her work and her work ethic. I will definitely be hiring her again.

The Bad (-1 star): ========== * The electrical subcontractor was quite bad. The electricians didn't install the dryer outlet properly (one conductor came loose before I first used it), most outlets they installed are loose (they give when pushing in a plug), and they installed a used, old (not LED compatible) dimmer for the LED lights they installed. Also, the owner yelled at his team a lot. * The plumbing subcontractor was bad, too. They misdrilled several holes, damaging the interior of the home. They didn't seal around exterior penetrations into the house. They didn't put a cover over the branch of a wye that was no longer needed. They wouldn't do anything about the loss of hot water pressure in a bathroom faucet that occurred after they moved some plumbing around (I ended up having to disconnect and disassemble the hot water valve myself and I found a piece of silicone clogged in there). They over-glued the drain of the laundry supply box making it nearly impossible to remove the cap, and they lost the o-rings on my faucet aerator. The Ugly (-2 stars): ========== * They overlooked details in the plans about where walls and doors should go, and denied responsibility since they weren't in the structural engineer's plans, which they opted to not have updated with the revisions I told them about. This lead to a sewer pipe being installed in an inconvenient location (it went through the foundation, so it can't be moved), a structural wall that was almost built in the wrong place (I caught it while they were digging the footing), and a room that was built with no doorway (they had to cut some framing to make the opening). * The pricing/scope was negligent at best, but I'd put it closer to misleading or deceptive. During the initial visits, they talked about all the things they would do (including putting up framing, drywall, and insulation), and then sent over an estimate that I accepted. I didn't realize until halfway through the project that the estimate didn't include many of the things they talked about (including the framing, drywall, and insulation); those apparently would be part of "Phase 2," not included in the price of the first estimate. I had chosen E&F over another estimate that was less expensive even though it did explicitly contain the "additional" scope. I was also surprised that the electrical and plumbing (most of which was necessary to get them out of the way for the structural work) was billed separately; i.e., an unexpected additional expense. * They chose to rebuild a segment of stairs (rather than just adding two steps at the bottom, per the plans), which ended up having insufficient clearance with an overhang halfway down. They tried to convince me there was no new problem because they built them the same as before (but the run of the new stairs was one inch longer, causing the 4th step down to be 4 inches closer to the overhang) and resisted remedying the issue. They just ended up taking a sawzall to trim the overhang -- a joist -- which I just have to hope doesn't compromise any structural integrity! Further, they didn't even finish the stairs (sand and seal); "Test your staining skills," they said. * They ghosted before Phase 2. As the structural work was reaching completion, we were going back and forth on scope for Phase 2. However, when the structural work was actually completed, they just stopped communicating, left dirt and demo debris they left on our driveway for a month, then disappeared. There were lots of things they removed to get out of the way (like several segments of fence) but didn't put back. I could easily add 3x more issues and details, but this review is already too long.

Owning an older home comes with inevitable surprises, so we wanted a team who could problem-solve creatively. That's where Liran shined. We brought some ideas to the table, and he offered alternative solutions that made far more sense for how we live--solutions we loved. Designers were brought in to prepare plans and permits, and the work began. Our project manager, Adi, was one of the kindest, most attentive people I've ever worked with. He stayed in constant contact, visited the site frequently, and ensured every detail met extremely high standards. It became a running joke between us about changing their slogan to "quality you can afford"--he humored me, and it perfectly captures the team's approach. The craftsmanship from Flavio, the lead contractor, was exceptional. We didn't pick the easiest designs, but the finished primary bathroom shower tile is genuinely a work of art--everyone who sees it comments on it. We also can't forget "Muscle Memo", who handled all the heavy lifting--climbing through dusty attics, crawling under grimy crawl spaces, and tackling the toughest physical work. His effort made the project run smoothly and safely. Adding to the charm, the team brought their own portable bathroom, which hilariously became a little local attraction--neighbors and passersby would sometimes "need to go," and we all shared a laugh over it. LB went above and beyond by addressing problem areas that weren't part of the original scope, with no extra charge, just to ensure the house looked perfect. They even brought in a professional cleaning crew, leaving our home cleaner than when the project started--a rare and deeply appreciated touch. We are thrilled with the entire LB team and highly recommend them. The installation was completed on schedule, and the workmanship is outstanding -- the countertop looks beautiful, and the dishwasher was installed with care and precision. The crew was respectful of my home, kept the workspace clean, and made sure everything was working perfectly before they left. It's rare to find a company that delivers both great customer service and high-quality craftsmanship, but Pablo's General Remodeling truly exceeded expectations. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for kitchen upgrades or appliance installation.
