The food was pretty good, with very large portions. I ordered shrimp with snow peas and cashews added, and my sister got the chicken with snow peas. The server seemed perplexed by my request to add the cashews but eventually managed to find a way to accommodate the request. A surprise find - didn't think I will get decent Chinese place in the little town of Cortez. The owner told me they had been here over 13 years. We had 2 orders of the fried dumplings. My son loved it so much to have two orders Singapore rice noodles with the right spice and kick to it. We also had combo fried rice and pho. I am used to the pho with raw beef so this was a bit different. Anyways - large portions with good flavor. A very nice find. read more

We ordered takeout after seeing chow fun and spring rolls highlighted in reviews. Fortunately when I called I was told it wasn't really chow fun it was more like pad Thai. That's fine; just don't offer chow fun if it's really not available. The mushu chicken or plum/soy sauce or mystery sauce spilled out of the torn ToGo bag all over my pants and car seat! This really needs plastic wrap around the styrofoam containers. As I'm in a hotel and need these pants I'm washing them in the tub. When asked for utensils only a fork was offered; no chopsticks. Lastly folks must not know what Chinese food is or may not want it. Either this is highly regionalized or this was the worst mushu and spring roll we've ever had. Save yourself time and money and maintain clean pants by eating whatever food you brought in the car for your roadtrip. read more

Pho. Worst I've ever had in my life. Inedible. Beef is chewy as tires. Meat balls aren't bouncy but chewy af. Broth tastes like water with 0 depth. Tasted worst than canned pho broth. Absolute worst thing I've ever put in my mouth and swallowed. I ate only a bite and that was it. My family all tried a bite and couldn't down it. My dad said it tasted like the broth had gone bad. He literally spat out the noodles after chewing a couple times. My stomach literally started to hurt after trying the pho. Wonton soup (not shown). My family all tasted it. All said tasted like simply water + excess salt. Inedible. Second worst than after the pho that I've ever put in my mouth. Fried rice. The rice itself was actually decently cooked and seasoned. However, all meats had no micro-sear as you would expect from any typical Chinese fried rice being tossed around in a wok with decent wok-hay (high temperature of the wok). Rather, upon closer inspection, the meats all looked like they were deep fried because they were coated with some super oily batter. This is not right and just made the meat taste oily as hell. The boneless duck with mushroom dish had hella bones and fat. Boneless means no bones. There was barely any duck meat. The sizzling chicken dish. Overly sauced to oblivion. They forgot some of our stuff such as steam rice and wonton soup. They forgot the wonton soup twice. Super expensive for low tier Chinese food. Panda Express is wayyyyy better. Like seriously? We got 5 dishes and total was $90 before tax. For trash Chinese food. Like wtf? Parking had no lights and was pitch dark. We made a comment to one of the employees about the lights since he was out smoking a cigarette and he said out loud in an annoyed way "of course there's no lights!". Real life kitchen nightmare. The woman cashier who spoke Vietnamese and Cantonese, yes I can speak and understand Cantonese, went into the kitchen and started yelling at someone in Cantonese. Something along the lines of "I know how to do my job so don't tell me what to do!". All the customers were listening in and shocked. The only good thing here was one of the waiters. The one with the glasses that understood Cantonese. He acted like a proper waiter from a proper Chinese restaurant. Do yourself a favor and just go somewhere else. Go look for a Panda Express if you're just craving Chinese food. read more

When you're down in the sticks and don't have access to a variety of restaurants, it can be hard to find anything better than mediocre burgers and overcooked carne asada. We saw this place with good reviews and decided to try it. We had some fried rice, mapo tofu, and beef and broccoli. It definitely hit the spot since it had been a while for us without any Chinese food. This will not be the best Chinese food you're ever had, but it will scratch the itch VERY well. Everything exceeded our expectations - I have lived in Denver for 4 years and this is better than any of the Chinese food I have found there. I was a little skeptical about how good Chinese food can really be in this little town, but decided to stop and try it. I guess I have LA written on me as the servers asked me straight out! We are spending just one night in Cortez while exploring Mesa Verde and didn't want to take the car around for a restaurant. Ocean Pearl, which was one of the only options open on Sundays, was just two streets down from our Super 8. As every place in the middle of nowhere has a tacky Chinese restaurant with an overly excited and enthusiastic little lady, my expectations were set. They also offer lunch buffets and have your typical paper lanterns and buddha statues awaiting you. Their menu is huuuuge and you'll be sure to find at least a few things you like on every page. Portions are ample and pricing is super reasonable. The lady that served us was quite basic to the point of blunt, but the older lady, who I assume was the owner/manager, makes up for that quickly. Food came out of the kitchen quickly and steaming hot. Plates are accompanied by your choice of rice (in our case fried, which was a bit dry and bland to be honest). Genuinely one of the best meals I've ever had. The prices seemed a little high, but the quantity and quality EASILY explain it. I had sesame chicken and not only was the sauce delicious but the chicken was cooked perfectly; it was crispy on the outside and delectably tender on the inside. I hate to give a negative review to a restaurant that's been in Cortez for so long. My wife and I ordered take out (since Covid is still going on) and were very disappointed in our meals. We ordered: * Spring Rolls * Szechuan Family Delight * Happy Family The actual spring rolls were OK. The dipping sauce was iffy. The two entrees were drowned in a thick brownish sauce, which is something we didn't expect, especially for the Szechuan entree. The Szechuan entree didn't have any taste of spice, which was strange and very disappointing. We had asked for brown rice instead of white rice. What we got seemed to be white rice drowned in soy sauce. Not good. Again, I hate to be negative about a long-standing Cortez restaurant, but we'll never be back, and there are other, better choices available nearby. We ordinarily love left-overs, but the food went in the trash the next morning. The take-out service was friendly and efficient. The portion size was large. I have been living in the Midwest for the past 15 years and I'd almost forgotten what good Chinese food was like. It was like my favorite in California. So glad I pulled up the menu online.
