It was very good. I loved the unagi and tuna sashimi. The salmon sashimi was rich and buttery. The 'whitefish' in the sashimi set was very fishy and had chewy parts so it was hard to eat. The two rolls we got were creative but kind of weird. It's an elevated place and fairly expensive but very fresh. The service was only okay for the price point they're showing, less than remarkable. The food that came to us looked nothing like what was in the pictures. The waiter was also racist, he came over and asked us where we are from and then started making fun of our accent. Then, when the sashimi came out with only 3 pieces when there's supposed to be 5, he told us that it's only 3 pieces for that specific one yet it says 5 on the menu and the white group next to us received 5 pieces. When we left no tip, he was aggressive on us. Please hire better waiters. read more

Went for a nice meal out and decided to try Stonefish for the first time. Haven't lived in the area long but from other experiences, I did not have very high expectations for some sushi this far land locked. Imagine my surprise! The starter was the pan fried gyoza and miso soup. Both were quite tasty - the soup was nice and hot, not too salty and a generous proportion. I like my gyoza a little crispier but I think the sauce they dressed it up with may have robbed some of the crispy. Tried a new roll - the Cortez and the Verde. Both packed a little punch with heat. The verde is interesting because it's like the southwest met the far east - fried chicken in lieu of fish and it kind of reminded me of a deconstructed reconstructed burrito with an Asian persuasion. The Cortez was perfect for such a cold night - right amount of heat and mixture of crunch and soft textures. It was recommended by our awesome server and I'm glad he made the recommendation. Came for dinner with a group. Was seated near front window and excited for the meal. Table had a lot of flies, asked hostess if something could be done about the flies responded "i dont know what to tell you". Waiter came and fly issue had only gotten worse, informed the waiter we were going to leave due to the fly issue. Waiter responded " we normally kill them in the morning". Food on the other tables looked great but sadly the fly issue and staff concern was too terrible to over look. Wont be coming back. read more

The service was outstanding, the sushi better than outstanding. Really...we have eaten sushi all over the world. This is some exceptional sushi. Super fresh, beautiful presentation and great sushimi. We had 1 night in Cortez (movie title?) while in town visiting Mesa Verde. We had done our homework and based on the reviews and photos we were really looking forward to Stonefish Sushi. We were not disappointed! This was, so far, our absolute best meal of our trip and the best sushi we've ever had. Anywhere. Ever. We had the Gyoza to start. Very flavorful and perfect consistency. For our mains we split the Oktoberfest and Yummy rolls. Again, very flavorful and d just the slighted kick of heat. All ingredients were very fresh and the presentation was amazing. We loved our craft cocktails; would recommend the Basil Bomb and the Blackberry Margarita(be sure to stir!). Visited from out of town exploring Mancos and Cortez and chose to eat lunch here and it did not disappoint. My friend had a Mojito, Edamame, and the Dragon Roll and I enjoyed a Shrimp Tempura Roll and the Chicken Protein Bowl. I loved that they had gluten free soy sauce. This was by far the best quality tasting food I've had in a long time. I'm visiting from Florida and the food there does not compare. I loved the atmosphere and our bartender, Luis was outstanding! Don't want to look like a pompous fool, but I've had a lot of sushi from NYC to LA to San Diego, to Philly, to ATL, and this place is easily top 5. Why? The innovation at most spots is truncated in flavor, and afraid to try experimenting with a new flavor profile. Hamachi with Yuzu and and cilantro oil with a dab of siracha?? What?!?! Amazing combo that I haven't seen elsewhere. The Hawaiian roll, especially was lovely for the fresh mango, and microgreens garnish they brought everything to life. My brother got the dragon roll and "ARE YOU KIDDING ME" roll, I particularly liked the dragon roll for the heat they added to the dish, not over powered, but level of spicy you can't ignore. This was recommended to us by the vacation rental we were staying at. We love sushi so had to try it. We got the fried Verde Roll and loved it. The phat bowl noodles were also good and very filling. Service was great, loved that we got water immediately and were refilled promptly. Always hate when we run out of water at restaurants, but we never did here, constantly had a full glass! I'd order a straight up roll vs the chopped Dynamite mix atop if I were to re-do. $3 add-on lunch miso was too salty needing more dashi, less miso. Menu has some great non-sushi options, Sapporo battered fish n chips, Chix Bahn Mi at lunch and Rice Bowls, Verde Chix tempura tortilla roll, Rancher seared steak tenderloin roll, and PBJ for the Minnows. Comfortable velour turquoise bench seating runs length of dining room wall, facing a large wall fountain, the full bar/sushi counter, and lively decor while featuring the old sandstone wall, crown molding and ornate ceiling tiles. We were not told that we should make reservations, so we walked down the street to see what we might find. Went in for a drink, and stayed... This place turned out to be an awesome and lucky find!! This is a delicious Asian fusion place that opens on a black Friday night. Their special ramen that was not on the menu was very nice. It had boiled egg, bamboo roots, mushrooms, etc. Curry was creamy but a bit salty. The chirashi had fresh fish, but it also had kimichi and Mexican, which confused me a bit. Staying in Cortez for a few days and we had a craving for sushi. In all honesty you wouldn't expect to find high quality sushi southern CO, but this place actually delivered. I had the buttery white fish sashimi and it was so freaking good! Also, we had the Colorado rancher which was a yellowtail roll with seared Kobe beef and a wasabi sauce on top (yum!), salmon roll and pad Thai. All were so delicious. Also, the service was amazing. Went in for our 11th anniversary. Food was good took a while to get especially for sitting at the bar and not overly crowded. Got our bill and noticed they forgot to add a couple items a roll and a beer I let whom I believe is one of the owners know being an honest person and all I got was oh I'll fix that. He rang it up on my card and gave it back not a thanks or hey that's cool you let me know nothing. So my tip reflected that some. Well looking at my card transactions today adding salt to the wound so to speak they charged me an extra 10.00 on to my tip amount. This has been contested with my card provider but long story short check your final charges. I hope this was a fluke and I would really hope they make it right. Well, I don't know what happened to this place since the photos posted in the reviews. EVERYTHING is served in/on disposable dishes. They even have disposable soy sauce dishes. You walk in to what looks like a very nice restaurant and sit down. Then you are told to go to the bar to order food and go to the bar to order drinks. So, the food comes out on disposable dishes. That in itself was very disappointing. Then we tried the sushi. Honestly, it was very good... BUT the bites were SO huge you couldn't get the whole thing into your mouth in one bite. Isn't the whole point of sushi to pick it up with chopsticks and put the whole piece in your mouth? You can't bite it in half because of the seaweed paper! This place had the potential to be a great restaurant but people don't go out to eat so they can pay a lot of money to eat off paper plates and get up and walk to the bar to order everything they need. read more

I met up with a few coworkers here for dinner. There were only a few tables available inside but a lot of tables outside. I guess nobody wanted to eat outside on the night we came here. They lit a candle to repel bugs and it appeared to work. I was told about this place several times from coworkers and from my client that the food here was good. Their menu had a lot of sushi and a few appetizers, entrees, and desserts. I usually get the spicy tuna roll at any sushi place as my baseline whether the sushi was good or not; however, I didn't order that here. I figured since I won't be back here in the future that I would order a bunch of food for myself. I ordered the Ginger Pork Potstickers ($7), Sesame Seared Chicken Breast ($15), the Sushi Pizza roll ($12) with spicy tuna as a choice of meat, and Green Tea Ice Cream ($4). They had phat bowls to order which sounded good to me. It took a while before the food came out. The Ginger Pork Potstickers were delicious and the prickly pear sweet chili sauce complemented the potstickers. A couple of my coworkers tried the sauce and said it was good. The Sushi Pizza roll came out next and it looked good. It was interesting because I've never seen a sushi roll like that. The waitress said she liked it because of the different textures involved with one bite and I had to agree with her. It was good and I recommend it if you're wanting something different out of your sushi. The Sesame Seared Chicken Breast came out and it was good. The teriyaki sauce might have been a little too much but the rice balanced it out. That would be a safe choice if you didn't know what else to order. Finally, the Green Tea Ice Cream came out and that was a great way to end the meal. Stonefish was a good sushi restaurant and I recommend coming by if you like sushi. There was a lot of sushi choices on the menu. While this would be more on the expensive side for some, it would be worth the money in my opinion. read more

We are glad to have found sushi in Cortez; Stonefish does fairly good Asian Fusion. Beef Phat Bowl would satisfy your "hibachi-ed cubed steak" craving; for the carbs we chose udon noodles since we're also getting the entree Sesame Chicken Over Rice. Not to mention sushi rolls. The Volcano Roll had the pieces all lumped together instead of a typical spread out roll, it tasted just fine. The space is pretty hippie for a small town, in my opinion, but we were just passing through so it was more like an in-and-out type of night for us. read more

In May 2011, my husband and I first visited Stonefish Sushi and were blown away by the atmosphere, friendly servers and the food. Unfortunately, there were so many things going on in our lives, we didn't have the opportunity to go back until recently. Let me tell you right off the bat that nothing much has changed mainly the menu) and that is a big positive for Stonefish Sushi; and why they are so popular. The atmosphere: as soon as you enter, you can feel the stress slowly flow off your body. The hostess and servers are friendly and attentive. The food is still excellent quality. We decided to try some new dishes and an old favorite...lets get the favorite out of the way. The Vegas Roll contains: salmon, avocado, cream cheese, fried tempura style, spicy mayo, unagi sauce. It is absolutely one of the most delicious specialty rolls I have ever eaten. Smooth, creamy, so decandent; it should be listed as one of the deadly sins. Ok, now on to the new dishes; as an appetizer we tried the Veggie Tempura Bowl. Bite sized pieces of fresh zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, broccoli and asparagus; tempura battered, fried light and crispy. The sauce that is served with it is on the salty side, so dip lightly; but then again, who would think of saturating tempura and making it soggy? The Stonefish roll contains eel, avocado, krab, cucumber, eel sauce; it's a very mild tasting roll and the freshness of the ingredients is a dominant factor. A little, and I mean little, dab of wasabi will only make the flavors pop, but doesn't ruin the essence of the roll. Please, don't be soaking this baby in soy sauce. Now for the finale, the Bananas Foster Bowl - bananas fried tempura style with scoops of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Now I am one who dislikes bananas, however, I found myself not being able to resist the ones in this dessert. We finished the whole thing; yes, it's a large dessert, so be willing to share.
