We were tourists passing through on a late Tuesday night. Having lived on both coasts, I've had some pretty excellent sushi and don't have high expectations for most land locked states. Maybe it's because of this, but HOLY mother of pearl... the roll I got here was awesome! I ordered the Samurai Crunch roll fully expecting a tuna roll with scallops, tobiko, sauce and crunch to come layered on top à la all the other sushi restaurants I've ever been to. Refreshingly, the scallops, tuna, and avocado were rolled inside, followed by thin slices of cucumber on the outside, and the tobiko and crunch tossed together before becoming the garnish on top. The end result was a delicious roll that held together in my chopsticks beautifully. Scallops tasted fresh, too. For dessert, I wanted something light and refreshing, so I was thinking the green tea ice cream, but I was also curious about the tempura banana. The restaurant was happy to serve the banana with green tea ice cream (I assume the default flavor would have been vanilla), and the combo was anything but light and refreshing... and 100% worth it. Tempura banana was the bomb! The sushi menu is more trendy/modern than traditional, but it's creative and whoever is putting these together is winning at life. I think our server's name was Katie and she was spectacular. The only con was the Pad Thai dish my husband ordered. Again, it was a fresh take on a traditional dish, but it was only "okay" and I agree with another reviewer that it seemed a little small, maybe compared to the quantity an authentic Thai restaurant might serve. So let me just start by saying this place is in the middle of nowhere. One of the best sushi places I've eaten at. Very fresh fish, very well prepared sushi, and the prices are reasonable. The server was extremely nice and served us better than most fine dining places I've eaten at. I'm surprised that this place would be this great considering it's nowhere near a bigger city. I love getting takeout from stonefish! Before Covid we ate there a lot, and with their take out, the food is just as excellent. The sushi rolls are very fresh, and the phat bowl is more than one person could possibly eat. To top it off, they have quarts of margaritas to go! We had the black cherry. I would have given them 4 stars but they charge a pickup fee of $2.00. This is not appropriate. So, adjust your tip down for this. Plus, they don't tell you they are charging you for pick up. They should disclose this, because during this Covid stuff we have been over-generous with our tips for pickup, and with the fee added it was too much. They should have to disclose this to you up front. This would prevent me from ordering here again, even though the food was good. read more

Excellent sushi. Came here based on the many excellent reviews on Yelp! Did not disappoint. The Stonefish and Zetroc house rolls are just plain awesome. Fresh ingredients and rolls made in front of you. Full bar with some interesting looking house drinks. They make their mojitos fresh. Hot and cold running sake. Only downside is that they need a bigger space. We walked in at 6 p.m on a Saturday and all the tables were full. We were able to get two seats at the bar (which we preferred anyway). If you want a table, I would recommend calling ahead. My girfriend said "We should move here and then come here every night." Driving thru on the way back from Mesa Verde and literally stumbled into this gem of a place. While the outside makes it look like a hole in the wall sushi place, when opening the doors the amazing smells of goodness slap you in the face. Trying a variety of dishes, as we just hiked for hours, there was a toss up between the Thai styles lettuce wraps and the chocolate bombs. I think it helped greatly that our server was humorous and was all about helping to choose what to stuff our face with. Will be returning to try more of the menu! read more

Sushi in the desert is a sketchy proposition, but the Yelp reviews convinced us that Stonefish was a reasonably safe bet. So, we stopped in after a long day of hiking and climbing through Mesa Verde. We were tired and presumably fairly dusty, which may account for why the hostess immediately offered to seat our group outside - ie, not in the hopelessly trendy main restaurant. Maybe she thought we'd like it better - the look of slight disdain may be one she gives to everyone. But, seated in the rear courtyard, where the staff doesn't seem do venture very often and the noisier patrons are seated, I think not. The courtyard itself is nice, with a large wall on one side painted a bright periwinkle, and another one a cheerful apple green, giving life to an area that would otherwise be a lifeless cement square with a few widely spaced wood trestle tables. The hostess only brought three menus for our group of four, promised to bring another, and didn't. And that was kind of how the evening went. We ordered food, and one person's sushi arrived before the appetizers we had ordered for the group - but no dish provided for soy sauce, and we had to ask for chopsticks. Then, appetizers arrived, but not plates, which we had to ask for. Other food arrived in similarly haphazard fashion, as though the idea of courses had not occurred to anyone there. It's tempting to think that perhaps it was just the kitchen being backed up, or some items taking longer than others, but the restaurant was not even half full, and the item that arrived last, after several inquiries from us, was a spider roll. In a sushi restaurant. The good news? The food was exceptionally good - top-rate sushi, delicious crispy calamari, a fantastic prickly pear chili sauce, and shrimp tempura with a batter that was incomparably light and crispy. The waiter was clearly trying his best to manage the situation and keep the various groups in his station content. I hope that Stonefish can correct its issues - the food is good enough that they'll have people driving for miles if they do. read more

The food was good, but far from traditional. There appears to be a heavy American influence in most of the dishes. Some will like it, others will be less impressed. Under promised and over delivered! This place nailed it. Starting with a mojito and Grey Goose martini the place has a very comfortable feel with good site lines and cool bar in the middle and lots of cushion bench seating. The ahi and salmon sashimi was some of the finest quality my palate has had the pleasure to consume. If the sushi was anymore fresh I would have had to slap its face! And homemade wasabi that was as light as a feather but with the kick of an angry mule. The spicy lobster roll was amazing and was perfectly prepared with the right amount of everything and all quality ingredients. Wow! Let's just say "decadent." Lastly we had the Pad Thai and it was amazing with rich flavors and perfectly cooked noodles. The surfeit of food hit its apex and we ordered another cocktail to celebrate this unexpected gastronomic anomaly. The service was superb and it just goes to show, you can produce great food in any town if you have the finest ingredients coupled with the creativity to present eloquent masterpieces that dance on your tongue. Great sushi in southwest Colorado?? Yes there is! It's right here in Cortez. Great atmosphere and some wonderful sushi. My fave is the San Juan roll. Yum! With an order of tempura shrimp you get a house dipping sauce of prickly pear jalapeño sauce. Again, it's a perfect match for about anything you want to dip. "I'm not a fan of sushi" is a phrase I no longer utter, thanks to Stonefish! Yes, I often ordered the chicken entree, but after living in Cortez for 2 years, I tried various rolls and now I like sushi! The Vegas Roll was my comfort go-to sushi, but we also often ordered the Kiva and Dirty Vegas rolls quite often. The owner, Brandon, introduced me to seared tuna early into my foray sampling sushi - and I'm forever grateful. In addition to the food - they make a mean Kentucky Mule and in the summer often created refreshing lemon/basil concoctions that made the summer heat melt away. Great ambiance. Personable service. Superb presentation. Fantastic place for lunch or dinner - and makes for a really nice date night. You're missing out if you skip checking this place out! read more

Food was alright, but I was underwhelmed with the bar/sushi staff's maturity. Apparently, I had unknowingly ordered a beer after closing. Long story short...I was served a beer with multiple dirty looks, most notably from the man child manning the sushi station. I then asked what all the sour looks were about from the staff and was informed that they were closing and it was a long day. It wasn't apparent to me that the restaurant was closing because there were still plenty of people inside. I paid a left a full beer. Oh well,not returning for Colorado sushi. read more

Everything is good here with one exception The mojitos are made strong but not balanced enough, which is bad because the bartender was drinking with the customers. As a professional she should wait until the last 30 of the business hours before she has a drink. This place is to die for I'm from San Diego and have had great sushi but Luke brought it. I was totally shock on how great and fresh the sushi was. Eric was a sensational bartender. The staff rocked.
