We got in to Cortez late Friday after driving from Phoenix with no definite plans, only to escape the heat. With not many options with what was open, we took a chance and placed an order at Ocean Pearl for a Togo order and we were so glad we did. The Crispy Duck was simply amazing. We also had moo shu beef which was not only full of flavor but packed with beef. Coming from the East coast and having eaten in my Chinatown's in most major cities, I can say that the food at Ocean Pearl ranks right up there. Not only was the good good but the staff was most hospitable and accommodating especially since it was close to closing time. I highly recommend it and can't wait to go back. read more

This place sucks. I will never go in there again. To begin with, they need to work of customer service because the woman who took my order was loud and acted put out. I haven't eaten out in awhile and was looking forward to this. The food: I order chicken fried rice but was chicken fried crap, dry and dry. What gets worst is the sweet and sour chicken which they should change to sweet and sour rubber chicken. my father bit into the chicken and told me it was tuff, I tried and sure enough it was. This month a new Chinese restaurant opened up in Cortez, CO, making this the third such place in the area. As lovers of Chinese cuisine, we just had to try out the new place, and while disappointed in some aspects; we enjoyed others and are willing to try it out again. Don't let the outside of the restaurant fool you; it's much prettier inside. Tables in the center area and booths line the walls allowing for seating of about 150 people; the bathrooms are faux marble and very clean. The staff is friendly, attentive, and don't mind answering questions about the menu items, or where they are from. As with other Chinese restaurants in this area, they are from California's Chinatown, so specialize more in Mandarin style cooking. Being from the East Coast, and very used to Cantonese cuisine, this different style of cooking takes a little getting used to for me. There are basically two menus for dining in, depending when you are there: lunch or dinner. The lunch menu provides for combination meals that include: egg roll, soup (or salad), fried rice and the main item (a large variety of choice for this). The dinner menu is ala carte; has a larger variety of menu items, and include items listed on the lunch menu. There are also appetizers, soups and vegetarian items as well. We tried the fried cheese wontons, also known as cream cheese wontons; wontons were fried perfectly - crisp and light. The cream cheese filling was smooth and creamy; and the accompanying sweet-sour sauce and Chinese hot mustard went well with this dish. We had soup with our meal; the Wonton soup tasted too familiar, sort of like instant onion soup mix with one wonton in it, and pieces of green onion floating on top. The Hot and Sour soup, on the other hand, was delicious - rich, thick broth with plentiful ingredients; the taste was satisfying. Roy tried the Sweet and Sour Shrimp which we both tasted and agreed upon - the shrimp was overly coated in fried batter, and it was more like eating a shrimp donut; the shrimp itself was lost in all that batter. So, not too happy with this choice. I had the Sesame Chicken which was a milder version of General Tso's Chicken; in other words, there were red pepper flakes in the dish giving it a bit of heat. (General Tso's has the actual chiles in the sauce) Sesame Chicken is a very mild dish, and there were no vegetables, just chicken and sauce; usually steamed broccoli is served. Don't get me wrong though, it tasted very good and we both enjoyed it. The Fried rice was just white rice (very visible) with soy sauce; no vegetables or fried egg pieces. Eaten alone it was very bland, mixed with the main dish helped to enhance both items. Overall, it was better than the other two Chinese restaurants in the area; but from our experience with many Chinese restaurants out East, it was certainly not the best. However, as stated before, we will definitely give them another try. read more

We arrived in Cortez on a Sunday morning and decided on Chinese for lunch. This was beyond a doubt the best Chinese I ever had, no buffet, cooked an served fresh right out of the kitchen. We were the first customers in the door at 11:00 am and within an hour the place was jammed with regulars. I can't say enough about this establishment. Good people and GREAT FOOD. I like to wait several months after a new restaurant opens up to give them time to fine tune the operation. While passing through town I noticed that the initial rush of customers any restaurant gets when first open had leveled out quite a bit, so I decided to stop for lunch. The building appears to be a converted convenience store from the outside. I can't tell you what the inside looks like, or even judge the food, because I never got that far. I parked on the side of the business and immediately smelled a strong cigarette smoke smell. I looked around the back alley corner and two young men were smoking away, with the back door propped open. I swear I saw a box of what looked like raw chickens in a box on the floor. Flies were all over the back alley area. That was enough for me. I ate lunch in Durango. read more

Outstanding! When you travel, it is sometimes hard to find great places to eat. On the advice of the front desk clerk of the hotel we were staying in, we tried the Ocean Pearl restaurant. Jackpot! The food here is amazing - honestly some of the best Asian cuisine we have ever eaten! The staff is very personable. Even when busy, they take the time to visit with you! The owner who is also the chef even came out to check to see that we were enjoying our meal. They also have an extensive carry-out business and we're able to manage and transition between both seamlessly. read more

After Chinese food from numerous china town spots at numerous cities up and down the east coast and across the country this food was..... remarkable. This is the 2nd time in 1 week my GF and I have ordered take out from OP. The first order (sesame chicken, wonton soup and fried rice) was tolerable. The wonton soup was bland (I'm staying very objective with this entire feedback/critique) and over floured. The sesame chicken was eatable, but it 'arguably' wasn't made fresh. The fried rice was good--no complaints. We decided to give it a 2nd 'go' tonight. Here was our order with description....1. Fried rice was perfectly fine. 2. Sweet & Sour pork was over cooked unlike a semi-soft dish to dip in the S&Sour sauce---the overly cooked outside layer/batter took away from the flavor of the inside pork and S&S sauce. The sauce was perfect by the way. We ordered chicken lo main. Have had it dozens of time around the nation. Notion romper here. The flavor was good, as well as the chicken, but the noodles didn't taste right. The spring rolls were over bulky and did not have a fresh taste. They packed to much food in the clear/translucent wraps. We don't recommend. In sum, our bill was $40+. We expected a good Chinese dinner (we reframe the Hunan and Hong Kong Chinese restaurants I town--based off of word-of-mouth and personal experience. In sum, respectfully, Chinese food in Cortez is not all around the Asian dining (or take-out) experience. More effort and love and compassion can definitely be put into the food they make and sell. With all due respect, I am going to continue being loyal to Thai Cortez. It is a tad bit pricier (1-2 bucks) per platter, but I've never been let down, neither my GF. Cortez doesn't have a lot to offer in the way of Asian cuisine; however, this gem I found as I was on the way out of town and noticed they had a lunch buffet. The buffet had great offerings that were tasty and not too expensive. The staff was friendly and prompt with service. I will eat here again! read more

We LOVE Ocean Pearl. Have eaten there several times and never been disappointed in anything we ordered. The egg foo young is truly delicious, with a fully loaded "gravy" to go on top that is good enought to eat on rice as it's own dish, I love, love, love the Walnut shrimp. The soups are good, piping hot and exactly what one would expect. I have had the buffet once but the ice cream machine was broken - so no ice cream - but everything else was fresh and replenished often. read more

Sadly this establishment denied a veteran of our United States Armed Services and his fully-certified service dog admission to their restaurant. After being politely informed about the American with Disabilities Act laws they relented but did not allow them to visit the buffet. Here is the relevant portion of the law: Titles II and III of the ADA makes it clear that service animals are allowed in public facilities and accommodations. A service animal must be allowed to accompany the handler to any place in the building or facility where members of the public, program participants, customers, or clients are allowed. Even if the business or public program has a "no pets" policy, it may not deny entry to a person with a service animal. Service animals are not pets. So, although a "no pets" policy is perfectly legal, it does not allow a business to exclude service animals. When a person with a service animal enters a public facility or place of public accommodation, the person cannot be asked about the nature or extent of his disability. Only two questions may be asked: 1. Is the animal required because of a disability? 2. What work or task has the animal been trained to perform? These questions should not be asked, however, if the animal's service tasks are obvious. For example, the questions may not be asked if the dog is observed guiding an individual who is blind or has low vision, pulling a person's wheelchair, or providing assistance with stability or balance to an individual with an observable mobility disability.4 A public accommodation or facility is not allowed to ask for documentation or proof that the animal has been certified, trained, or licensed as a service animal. Without a doubt the best lunchtime buffet in the town of Cortez. don't get there too close to 3 p.m. cuz that's when they shut it down... but if you get there between 11 and 1 you're in for a real treat. While in Cortez, Colorado, folks recommended the Ocean Pearl restaurant, so on my last evening in Cortez, I decided to have dinner at the restaurant. I was not sure what meal to select from the wide range of offerings. Since I had a taste for more seafood after a seafood buffet at the Ute Mountain Casino a few days previous, I still had seafood on my mind, so I selected the Shanghai Combo Seafood plate with scallops, crabmeat, shrimp and vegetables. The meal was delicious. Even now that I'm back in Westminster, Colorado, I'm still thinking about how good the meal was. Hope to be back one day. read more

There are two treasures in Cortez, NM. One is the Mesa Verde ruins, the other is the Ocean Pearl. I am a bit of snob when it comes to Chinese food, having tasted the best in New York, London, San Francisco, Los Angeles. I tried the Ocean Pearl on a whim, passing through town between national parks. I was happily surprised, shocked even, to find Chinese food comparable to the best in such an out-of-the-way place. How the lucky folks of Cortez ended up with a Chinese restaurant of that caliber, one can only guess. I won't bother describing each menu item my family ordered, I'll just report that everything was superbly delicious. I might have returned to the Ocean Pearl the following day had we not traveled 115 miles to Moab. We actually considered it, the food was that good. I am planning future travel in that area, just so I can enjoy the Ocean Pearl as part of the trip. The decor is modest, the service is excellent, but if you KNOW good Chinese food and are anywhere near Cortez, be sure to dine at the Ocean Pearl for dinner or lunch buffet. Shame on me for not updating sooner. While I stand by my 3 star rating for the buffet the menu experience was a fantastic five. I had the Volcano shrimp and the wife the twice cooked pork. The twice cooked pork could have been a little spicier but I have forgotten to ask for it to be a higher level of spice when I order. The volcano shrimp has just the right amount of spice for me. I no longer even think about going to the other Chinese places now. I just order off the menu and avoid the buffet. We have had the pu pu platter appetizer several times now and am always amazed at how hot the egg rolls come out. We actually can not eat them right away because the are so hot. Lunch specials are around 7.00 and dinner 12.00. Good value for what you get. read more
