The moment we walked in, my brother-in-law was treated differently, and it was very clear it was based on his race. This happened without any cause--we had literally just entered the building. What makes this even more upsetting is that he works protecting this city and knows the law very well, yet none of that mattered. No one should be treated this way, especially when they are simply trying to enjoy time with family. If this is how random customers are treated at the door, I can't imagine how other situations are handled inside. When I finally approached him to address the behavior, the bartender confronted me as if I were the problem, rather than addressing the person who had been harassing us. This establishment did not feel welcoming or safe for people of color. Our money is accepted the same as anyone else's, yet we were not treated with the same respect. I served my country for six years and fought alongside people of all backgrounds--many of whom I proudly call brothers. I never imagined I would experience this level of disrespect and hurt in a place meant for recreation.
