Came here with my mom, on a Thursday lunch hour, both of us wanting to try someplace new and we were pleased with that decision. We were greeted by a pleasant young lady who promptly brought us ice water, chips and salsa. My mom ordered a chimichanga and I ordered the mole, house made horchata, and chose the soup. My mom (who is not an eater) was scarfing down the house made chips and salsa, they brought two kinds a mild blended pico version and a rich but not spicy chipotle version. My creme of mushroom soup arrived and it was good, after I added a little pepper. My mom was delighted with her chimichanga, she said it tasted like it had cinnamon in it, I sampled a little and enjoyed the fresh cilantro and onion flavors. My chicken mole was perfect! Oaxaca mole is dark with chocolate, peanuts and a spicy sweetness than can't by beat! The chicken was fall apart tender, the beans seemed freshly made and the rice was kept to a minimum. The service was solid (polite and prompt), the food was fresh, delicious and house made (not out of a can or powdered), and the decor is pleasant. Friendly accommodating family run business. They make my daughter and I a great vegan burrito that is off the regular menu, but absolutely delicious. They work hard and are open nearly all the time. I was really craving good Mexican food and being a recent Central Valley transplant, have been spoiled having great Mexican food for the past decade at taco trucks and sit down places all over town. Oaxaca Grill didn't disappoint. We need to return to try some different dishes, since my wife had the mild chicken mole, and I had the spicy mole. My only issue was that it was a little too spicy and I like it hot! A clearer warning on the menu is needed because anyone who orders it and isn't ready for a really hot dish isn't going to be able to eat it. I did, but I also had a few bites of my partner's mild mole to even out the heat. They were both amazing. The chicken breast was fresh and tender-no easy task for breast meat. The rice and refried beans were authentic and fresh tasting. And we chose the salad bar (unique for a Mexican restaurant in my experience) which was simple but good. We stopped for dinner (staying in Eureka on a drive from Seattle to San Jose). It was fantastic. We had the creamy jalapeño soup to start. Smoky, spicy and creamy. Delicious. Love this place! Wonderful salad bar that's included with your meal. Really it's great. I've only tried the chicken mole enchiladas but I dream about them. The spicy ones are pretty spicy and the regular ones have the perfect balance of sweet and savory. My co-worker really liked the Shrimp tacos too. I have been in Humboldt for a couple months now and I've made it my mission to find some quality Mexican food. At first, I was disappointed but then I was referred to Oaxaca's after trying some delicious salsa at a friends house. I was surprised to see a salad bar in a Mexican restaurant, pleasantly surprised to say. Not only is there salad, but there are plenty of side salads to choose from. The fish tacos topped with mango salsa are absolutely delicious, you can taste the freshness of the mangos. The salsas are my favorite, I am a salsa fanatic so I was really happy to find some good quality salsa. The gentlemen who owns the place, I'm guessing, is very friendly and gave us great service and a good conversation. Being a "Foodie," my judgment is extreme: I found the food disgusting. I could only get down two mouthfuls and then later wished I could throw up. No one asked about the fact that almost all of the food remained on my plate, though two employees looked at it afterward. This is the kind of restaurant which makes one wonder why someone who does not care about quality would open and run a restaurant. I began on a quest for decent Mexican food when I moved here many years ago. The only good Mexican food I have had within 75 miles are the chicken enchiladas at the hot buffet in the Northcoast Coop......and they are only made on Tuesdays. The Strauss sour cream makes a great addition. I am constantly amazed at what the locals here think qualifies as good Mexican food. I had a positive rating for Oaxaca until tonight. I ordered a burrito ($8) and then i asked to get a salad from the salad bar for which i was charged $8.00. i was shocked because i'd had one small plate of greens with some canned beets a few cucumbers and dressing. I mistakingly thought i was getting a salad bar with dinner, but apparently that doesn't exist. I paid more for my burrito and tiny salad ($16) than my husband paid for his Chanterelle mushroom enchiladas with soup ($13). This was ridiculous and when we questioned the owner he said the salad bar was organic and organic is very expensive. No doubt it is, but his salad bar is not completely organic and this is sad that he pissed us off enough that we won't be going back. If you go, don't make the mistake of getting a salad bar ala carte for $8. read more

I can't love this place enough. The service has always been superb with the waiter moving like there is purpose and being rather johnny on the spot with drinks and chips and salsa. The prices are more than fair with $11 getting you a huge entree served with rice and beans (black beans on request) as well as a bowl of soup or salad (get the soup its always good) to top it off the food tastes fresh and home cooked and its all delicious.
