If I could give this restaurant 10 stars for the quality of their food, their service and the ambience I'd give it 100!!! I brought my wife to Maui for her 40th birthday and she said by far this was the most memorable part of the trip (mind you we stayed at the Four Seasons). My 8 year old daughter also enjoyed the food. She had ikura, salmon avocado cut roll and miso soup. My wife and I had the Chef's 10 piece nigiri (to die for), oyster shooters, spicy hamachi cut roll, and spicy scallop cut roll and my goodness was it all amazing. Thank you Ande, Kevin, and forgive us for forgetting the other servers name for the wonderful service and amazing food. When we come back to Maui this will be our first stop. This place is a must do when you're on Maui!! First off the staff is phenomenal, just really good people pouring their heart into serving their customers. I had the hamachi carpaccio (this was my favorite!!),Serrano pepper on top, micro cilantro, garlic and citrus soy sauce! Wow!! Flavor fusion!!! Also enjoyed the heck out of the spicy tuna rice cakes (5 stars for those) and couldn't pass up the Japanese A5 wagyu. Such a beautiful presentation and no seasonings to take away from the flavor of the wagyu. And the ube pot de cream omg to die for!! The freshest tasting sushi. We had the White Dragon, Spicy tuna roll and Avocado Salmon roll. They're all amazing, but the white dragon took the gold. Kevin, our server was very attentive and kept our water glass always full. We came after lunch 1:30sh so we were seated right away. But everyone recommends reservations for dinner since it gets pretty busy for dinner. I highly recommend this place in Waimea, it's close to everything and very convenient to get to. read more

I love sashimi: I've had it all over the world. This place is the real deal and their service is top notch. I'm happy Oao grew out of an incredible food truck to become an incredible restaurant. I am watching the sunset drinking an IPA on the beach but in about an hour I will be at Oao all by myself pounding sashimi. Chef JR...I ate at your food truck a year ago, and when you told me you were opening up in Wailea, I told you I will come by when I come back. As promised, not only did we come by once, but twice! You and your team DID NOT disappoint! From the decor of the restaurant to the food, top notch my friend! That sashimi with the fresh wasabi is simply the best. I had it at your truck, and then having it at the restaurant, culinary masterpiece both times. The kids are finally old enough to enjoy sushi and they walked away with happy full bellies. My son and I are having a boys week off in Maui and we decided to eat sushi at Oao based on the great reviews. The service is top notch, but the place completely lacks ambiance, it has the vibe of a dive bar which would be totally fine other than the fact that prices are exorbitant. We had a few appetizers, one roll, the sashimi combo, and the chirashi bowl... it cost us north of $400! The fish was ok, just not blown away, so I went with 3 stars. read more

Ok so the food was really good and we enjoyed our visit. There were a couple issues I want to bring up though. 1. 4% kitchen charge is unacceptable! Tipping fatigue is real and you should not force us to help pay your employees, you make enough to pay them enough. Enough even, just stop this! 2. Some cross contamination things going on with the staff. People who serve food should not be busing or touching dirty dishes or handling payments. This includes bartenders! This is so unacceptable. Examples were staff busing dirty dishes and then putting ginger/wasabi plates together;bartender doing the same and busy dirty dishes. You need to separate your staf sao nobody is touchy food and then turning around and touchy dirty plates, taking payments etc. If you can address the above I think you have a winning recipe! read more

Oao is found tucked in the corner of a little shopping center in Kihei. My first impressions was that the restaurant is very clean and looks brand new. As with many other restaurants these days, they take reservations and that saved us from having to wait too long for our table. The ambience inside the restaurant is very nice. The seating area is a bit cramped with tables packed wall to wall, but that is to be expected and frankly the norm in most sushi restaurants. Everyone from the host that sat us to two servers we had were all very friendly. I would give them all 5 stars. Where I take off a star is in the price. The sushi rolls seem very over priced. If the prices were maybe 40% lower, then I could give this restaurant a well deserved 5 stars. I understand rent in this location is probably astronomical. But for the price I just simply expected more. read more

Hands down BEST SUSHI ON ISLAND! Chef JR, a former sushi Chef from Miso Phat and Isana, has fresh fish sourced locally and from Japan it tastes sooooooo Fresh. Well worth the prices this will be my go to sushi spot on island. Chef is so nice and humbling, make sure to sit at the sushi bar if you can. The Ube dessert is also MUST! Chef JR mother's recipe. A fantastic meal from beginning to end. Iggy was a fantastic server and even shared a few secret options not on the menu. We ordered some small plates and rolls. EVERYTHING was excellent. We are Kona folks so we are used to getting great fish (poke, sushi, etc). This place is no joke-fantastic food. They are new and don't have a liquor license but you can BYOB wine / beer / sake. They also had real A5 Waygu beef (we ordered as a plate to share). So good. Casual enough that you don't need to feel like you have to wear anything fancy but professional and fun in every way.
