I was very excited to try this new-to-us Maui sushi place in Wailea, and it did not disappoint. The spot is in the Wailea Gateway Center and on the smaller side, with two rows of smaller tables plus a few seats at the bar, with stylish and fun decor. Service is friendly and efficient. Dining din is significant. Drinks were fresh and attractive. We liked the fish so much we had four orders of the hamachi nigiri between the two of us by end of meal. We also shared the spicy edamame, the Wailea rainbow roll, the black cod, and the mochi ice cream. Everything was delicious and the prices on par for Wailea, i.e. spendy. Special shoutout to the Wailea rainbow for the presentation, flavor, and generous cuts of nummy fish on top. Overall fantastic meal. read more

Hands down our favorite restaurant diring our recent trip to Maui!! The service is fantastic -- attentive, fast, and friendly, and the sushi was so fresh and inventive. We had several of the Alaskan rolls, the hamachi carpaccio and the miso cod. Each was delicious but if I had to choose a favorite, it may be the miso cod which is on their cooked items menu. My husband also loved the sake selection. We loved this restaurant so much we ate there twice during our stay. It is a great mix of a spot loved by locals and tourists alike. Although we were the latter, they showed a lot of aloha warmth to us as customers. We will definitely be back! read more

Came for happy hour which I highly recommend. The rules are a really good price if you go happy hour. We were starving after a long hike and sat there getting delicious rolls from the owner JR. Highly recommend just classic rolls, that's all you need. Currently since they are still new, they do not have a liquor license but you can go two doors over to the market and pick up beers! Great spot, would recommend for a large group or small. The rock shrimp tempura was yummy, but I do not feel the need to get it again. read more

A great meal, except for the 4% surprise forced tip for the kitchen staff included in the pre-tax total. Which then leads to the absurd outcome of having to pay taxes on top of this invented 4% tip, then tip the server the usual 18-20% on top of all of this. So you end up paying around 22-30% more thanks to the owner's short-sighted choice not to simply include the cost of paying the kitchen staff a living wage in the price of the food, like all other restaurateurs. It's sad this is the only way to effect change - but maybe someone in management will read this review and understand that screwing your customers over at the end of the meal with a 4% undisclosed kitchen staff fee is just bad business. Wake up. Get rid of this b.s. Stop dicking around your customers and assuming we are just going to absorb your nonsense fees and tips on top of tips. F-YOU back read more

We ordered the Wailea firecracker roll, Philly roll, California roll and spicy scallop roll. All of which were amazing with a beautiful presentation. Our hotel recommended this place But didn't tell us they do not serve alcohol. Nor did their site say they don't serve alcohol. Have never been to a sushi restaurant that I cannot get a hot sake. I appreciate your reply. Unfortunately we had our concierge book the reservation. We did not think we needed to ask about alcohol and we're looking forward to going there. My biggest frustration was not that you didn't serve alcohol because your staff was transparent once we got there just our reservation was after 8 and we did not have time to go anywhere I would suggest that you let everyone know who calls and makes a reservation so they can be prepared. TLDR: The omakase is good value but misses the point of omakase. Neither the service/preparation nor the quality of the fish was worth the $380 (without tip and tax). I'm sure the regular food is much better and much more worth it, but I'm guessing the restaurant isn't quite set up yet for omakase. The staff doesn't seem to be trained for it. For example, the tea came after the first course. The plates weren't cleared between courses, so we had nowhere to put our plates. When we asked the chef what we should do with our plates, he told us to just put the plates to the side. Additionally, all of the fish had veins and was hard to chew. Furthermore, I expected the courses to be more special given the price but it kinda just felt like being served regular nigiri at any bento place. I unfortunately would not recommend the omakase here and feel like we spent so much for something that wasn't nearly as worth it. read more

Oao is my new favorite spot on island! I have already been a couple of times since they opened up in Wailea and could not be more satisfied! Service has been absolutely amazing, Zach gave us top tier service on our first visit and suggested we return to try Chefs Special. Last night we did that, the range in flavor and textures elevated OAO to one of my top dining experiences anywhere! From the Bluefin, to miso marinated Butterfish, to the Wagyu each course was an entirely new experience that seemed to just get better and better! We really were looking forward to trying this place out given all the 5* reviews but unfortunately the overall experience fell way short. The 2 stars are for the staff who were very sweet and friendly however, the quality and flavors of the food we ordered fell way short. We had 2 appetizers, 2 of their most basic rolls (spicy tuna & shrimp tempura) and a couple of pieces of nigiri each and the bill with no drinks (they don't have an license yet) was a total of $152. This place is located in a strip mall in Wailea. We were sitting outside literally in a car-park and some of their sushi rolls were as high as $52 dollars!!! Given the sub-par quality of the fish and the soggy/poorly presented rolls, we were fairly taken aback. We live in San Francisco (used to very high prices) and have enjoyed sushi not just in the Bay Area but across the US and this was just ok. For the prices, it felt like a ripoff even by Wailea price standards. The final insult was the check where when presented with the bill the lowest assigned tip option was 20% but they had already included a 4% 'kitchen staff' tip -... so unless you pay close attention, and make the effort to calculate and customize your tip, you will be forking out 24% minimum - not cool... sorry, won't be back. read more

Excellent food and service. Everything we ordered was amazing. The spicy edamame and cilantro corn salad were favorites, but the rolls were also excellent. I am unable to eat aioli/mayo and that can make ordering difficult. The staff at Oao happily accommodated this restriction, modified our Shrimp Tempura roll, and offered to modify other items for future visits. The dinner prices were reasonable but we were there for lunch and found that they have daily Happy Hour from 12PM-5PM. We live on the West side of the island but will gladly make the trip over to visit Oao! read more

Overall good atmosphere and once they get their liquor license this place with be off the charts. Highly recommend the Hamachi Carpaccio and the Tuna Emperor. This was by far the best meal my family had on our Hawaii Vacation - We started off with the salmon karaage which was super crispy and tender, so much so that we ordered it twice. After some deliberation and questions for our waiter, some of the items we ordered were King Salmon sashimi, Big Eye Tuna Small Plate, and the Black Cod. Everything we ordered was extremely fresh, greatly flavored, and very well portioned. But minus 2 stars for the prices. I expect higher than normal prices in Wailea but if I'm spending $45 on one sushi roll, it better knock my socks off. There didn't seem to be anything special about this roll - it still had imitation crab and typical sauces. This place has been our favorite sushi spot to go to. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here and again, food was spot on and just as amazing as I remembered. We sat at the high top bar and our bartender was Duane. Amazing person and service. Very respectful, diligent, and has heart for his job! He recommended the crab cakes and it was awesome so get that! The sushi was fresh and delicious! The entrees are amazing as well. The stuffed shrimp was amazing and my husband enjoyed the lamb! It's was very busy but we were so lucky to be able to walk-in and sit. So if you have more than two people I think it's best to make reservations. The restaurant was clean, there's lots of parking, and environment was welcoming. We always tell tourist, friends, and family that this is a place you MUST go to. Mahalo Duane and Oao staff! I ate here with my family on vacation last week. The food was wonderful! The miso soup was the best miso soup we had ever had. It had a super deep/rich flavor. Now I don't really eat sushi or raw fish very much so I just got the grilled corn and a side of sushi rice (not pictured). The corn was good and I almost never see restaurants serve just the sushi rice, so that was a delicious surprise. My family loves raw fish and they got the firecracker and the rainbow roll (not pictured). A few nights before, we had gone to a different sushi restaurant but Oao was much better in terms of service and the food quality. Not only was the food good, but the service was amazing! Every worker there was very nice and seemed to have fun and enjoy working there. And as we left, multiple people working there said goodbye to us. We had a lot of fun eating there because of the workers and the environment they created. Lastly, we got dessert to-go and it was so yummy! I love dessert so we got 2 orders of the mochi and 1 of their matcha dessert (it was like a panna-cotta). The mochi were really cool flavors, cherry blossom, passion fruit and I think mango as well, and they were all very good. The next time that we are in Maui, we will definitely be coming back! read more
