We encountered a small problem with our order, but the manager or owner quickly stepped in to make things right. They went above and beyond to ensure that we were satisfied with our experience and even offered us free food and drinks as a gesture of goodwill. This spot has a very trendy atmosphere, the staff are all very friendly and super helpful. There were four people in our group and we shared since most dishes come with 8-10 dumplings. What we ordered: Jumbo XLB dumplings- these soup dumplings were extremely juicy and packed with lots of flavor. Pairs perfectly with soy sauce and chili paste. Only downside was that I broke a lot of these, but if you slowly put a spoon under and grab with your chopsticks it makes it easier. Pork and cabbage dumplings- I could taste how fresh these were! The wrap was soft and the filling was a good pork to cabbage ratio. Pan fried chicken/vegan dumplings- these were perfectly pan fried and juicy in the middle. Garlic noodles- the noodles practically melt in your mouth and come with lots of veggies and the chicken had a nice marinade/flavor. They were also nice enough to separate the chicken since we had a vegetarian in our group. Hi, I came into the dumpling place. I'm a little scared. The mirrors are filthy the bathrooms filthy the floors are dirty. The front windows are dirty. I haven't tried the food yet so we'll see. I want to like this place, maybe we ordered the wrong thing. The tofu noodles looked like and textured like old rubber bands. They are hard to swallow and they don't taste like tofu, they should take it off the menu. The texture also reminded me of beef tripe except I like beef trioe. TL;DR The place that buys from Costco, cooks then serves it to you. Food: We bought three items for dinner. XLB ($13), pan fried dumplings ($9), and garlic noodles ($13). The first to come out were the noodles. True to the name, it was full of garlic flavor, diced green bell peppers, and tender chunks of stewed beef. The noodles were oily and overcooked, not bouncy as I prefer. Next came the fried dumplings. Cooked nicely with juice locked inside, these reminded of the dumplings I get from wholesale I cook at home for a snack. Lastly, the pride of the restaurant: XLB, soup dumplings. The dough was too soft and broke easily. Inside a perfect small dumpling in a puddle of Knorr. Atmosphere: Nestled among other trendy eateries, this spot has a huge sign outside and a glass storefront in which you can see the open and minimum decor inside. They cater to a 'quick dine-in' or take out group, rather than a sit down with friends to catch up kind of vibe. Are they clean? Other than the gloveless server who gave us our naked utensils, they keep the restaurant looking clean. It's 2022 folks. Service: Similar to Chinese takeout places, but less chat. Meh. Overall score: 2 stars One star for the food. I refuse to return to pay $13 for chow mein I can make better at home, or pay $9 for 10 dumplings that I know sells for roughly $10 per 4 pound bag. TLDR - What a strange experience. Food was solid, service was awkward, presentation was takeout. We were at South Coast Plaza to return some crap and thought we can put our name down and eat at Din Tai Fung, but they had a 3 hour wait on a Monday?! I think everyone at the mall had their name down to eat Din Tai Fung. Back up plan was Paradise, but they had a 1.5 hour wait. So we opted for this random next available spot and O Dumpling Bar. Gave them a call and they said they're not busy so we should be good. 15 minute drive from Costa Mesa and it's located in Downtown Orange so it's a good vibe. There was one other party there eating so I guess that is good. This place isn't a dining restaurant, more like a pick up window. We ordered our food and seated ourselves. The cashier was on her break maybe so we dinged her down with their Hector Salamanca bell. She took our order and brought us water too, but definitely wanted us to order for take out. Brought us some water, some paper bowls and plastic utensils. They probably don't want to do any dishes but it made for a strange dining experience. The food came out in their to go containers too so that was strange. But it came out quickly and it tasted solid. The XLBs were prone to tearing which is an XLB's nightmare. Rice and noodles were good, but this place is pricey for such a mediocre dining experience. Take out experience should be take out prices. Restaurant aesthetic doesn't follow a theme with their parrot chandeliers which clearly were kept with whatever was here before this place. There is no focus on making this a presentable restaurant. Probably not going back and next time we want XLBs we'll just have to plan better when we visit South Coast Plaza. read more
