Our first day in Montreal and we were walking down the street looking for lunch. We stumbled on KYK's and liked the look of this classic pub. So in we go! There was a nicely selected set of local beers on the menu. We had a few and they were great. I won't detail them as I think the selection changes routinely. It was tough to decide what to get. I was poutine-curious but was unsure about the foie gras gravy. Andrew ordered the poutine with the duck confit. He loved it and said it was among the best poutine he has had. I went for the traditional mussels as Andrew said this is a thing to get in Montreal, they will do it well. He was right, the bowl was huge and the mussels and sauce were excellent. The only thing I would change is I like a baguette with mussels more than fries so if that is an available substitution I would be all in. 3/5 - I will start with the food and drinks were genuinely scrumptious! Our first real stop in Montreal, this was recommended to us by the bartender from our hotel. The service was suuuuper blow despite the restaurant being less than half full but each dish was undeniably great. We started with the cured salmon which was chunked instead of thinly sliced which we did not expect but it blew our minds! Couldn't stop until it was all gone. Followed by duck confit poutine with foie grau gravy - perfectly cooked and a lovely intro to poutine in general. Decent wine and beer selection. We had dinner here late on a Tuesday night after seeing a show at the Place de Arts. After the show, very few places were open to eat, so we were thankful that the kitchen at Nyk's doesn't close until 11pm. This is a bar that also has a small amount of table seating, but the ambiance is clean and nice, not like a dive bar. Our server was great as well. I had the burger and I added blue cheese and pickles to it. They gave me lots of pickles which was great, but the blue cheese was spicy, I think it was blended with horseradish or something. My dad had the French onion soup and the feta with mixed vegetables. To drink I had the L'alveole, which was tasty and similar to a paloma, but could have benefitted from some salt or tajin on the rim. read more

Great place for some pub food! The duck confit poutine was great, very rich and filling. The lamb sausage was delicious and their fries and salad are great sides; the perfect pub meal. The flambé cheese was a delicious appetizer, with a table side element of the flambé it was super fun. The service was fast even though it was packed. We had to wait a half hour because they don't take reservations, but it was worth the wait! I definitely felt like an old pub once you got inside, but they also had the front of the restaurant completely opened up on a nice day so there was plenty of airflow. Would Return again! read more

Sorry but we were underwhelmed by NYCS. We stopped in on a Friday and sat at the bar. We were told we'd have to leave in a short while as the bar seats were reserved. That's was new to us. We quickly ordered calamari and drinks. While the beer was good, the wine glass had at most 3 ounces. And when the calamari came, it was flavorful but tough. We bolted never to return. read more

I was hoping to like this spot more since it is a cozy spot in a bustling area. I liked the posted photos but my burger was mediocre. I appreciate the accompanying greens, but it was my favorite item on the plate. Pleasant waiter, but for the price I expect more flavor. Quarter pound of beef which was on the done side with no pink in sight. Leaving it slightly dry. Will come again since it is convenient location for me, but ptobably more for drinks. read more

3.5 stars . Located near me I figured I would give this place a shot for dinner. I ordered the tartare of the moment and it was beef. Good enough but lacked a bit of oophm. My boyfriend got the burger with bacon and cheese but the cheese was not melted so it looked overall cold, he said the taste was alright. The fries and side salad were really good in my opinion! We tried 3 different local beers, don't remember the names because I just told the server the flavors I like to taste in my beer and she delivered. 5 stars! Nice vibe, indoor and patio seating, dimly lit in the inside, bomb music. Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Amy Winehouse placed through the speakers in my visit. I went to this spot multiple times during my trip to Montreal. It's a snug little bistro pub that serves a wide variety of local beers, such as Belle Guele, mixed in with some European imports and steady amount of spirits and concoctions. The food offerings ranged from pleasantly nice to satisfactory, especially with their onion soup and ratatouille renditions. What kept us coming back to this spot over our trip was both the environment and hospitality of the staff. The staff, from hostess to bartenders, were always pleasant and prompt. You would always be greeted in French, but would easily shift to English without attitude and appreciated any attempt at French from us, no matter how horrible. I would travel again to Montreal just to visit this spot again. It's a terrific place for lunch or kicking back after attending a hockey game or anything else, for that matter. read more

Confession. We were in a tight spot and I accidentally broke a few glasses on the way out. However, not a large space and they went out of their way to accommodate our large group of 13. And the service was among the best we've had in Montreal which is quite something given the number of positive experiences we've had. All that said, this was the best meal I had in over a week in town. The duck confit poutine was transcendent, the gravy the richest I have ever had in a poutine and the duck was magnificent. Came here last night for the first time. While I'm from Montreal I now live in Florida. I found this place on yelp and was also recommended by the concierge at the delta hotel. We were very casual and wanted good food but didn't want to dress up. This place did not disappoint! We started with the beef carpaccio, the touch of truffle oil made it so good! they were out of all their specials so I ended up getting the mussels and fries, it was amazing. I highly recommend. My husband was still a little full as we made our traditional stop at orange julep earlier and he filled up on fries and a julep. He ended up with French onion soup. Which he said was very good! I have been to Nyk's many times. You might think I'm bias because of it, I know a good place when I try one. The food is consistant and good, the service staff are friendly and knowledgeable. What makes this place special is their poutines. They are served with foie gras gravy and the fries are hand cut. Not frozen crap like most places these days. It's often busy, bar seats especially. Ambiance is cozy, bistro/pub feel. Areas of improvement in my personal opinion would be beers on draft. The only imported beer on draft they have is Guinness. Everyone loves a good Guinness but the rest of the beers are local beers. Although I understand the concept of pushing local, I also think on draught we should have variety. I'm personally not a fan of IPA or beers with lots of HOPS, yet that's exactly what most Quebec beers are. It would be nice to have an Irish Cream Ale like Kilkenny on draught or simply more imported options for variety. It's something everyone can recognize and associate with for the most part. Good service, did not require a wait time when we went for lunch on a Friday. Good spot if you want a beer mid day, as they offered beer throughout the day. The atmosphere is very chill and casual. My group ordered mussels, poutines, and duck confit. There is a large variety of food. The poutine had a slightly sweet flavor almost a kick of cinnamon, which was very interesting. Stopped by for an afternoon drink, had the on tap cider...very refreshing. Service was excellent, asked about their daily specials so returned for supper later on. The snapper was fantastic! The tomato mango salsa really dressed it up, the asparagus & lemon pepper basmati rice finished it off. The serving size was great as it left room for the crême brûlée as dessert...very tasty! The pecorino wine was a great accompaniment to this meal. The staff were friendly, always willing to answer questions or have a brief chat with this solo diner. We were there on a crowded Friday evening. We had a reservation and got seated in short order. Having read some negative reviews about the burgers, I chose the fish and chips. It was a really disappointing meal. The first bite of the deep fried fish made me think of old cooking oil. What was even more disappointing was that it was heavily breaded fish with an interior of the breading that felt quite doughy and lacking any seasoning. The fries by contrast were over cooked. There were some greens on the plate that were acceptable, but in the end the meal was very disappointing in flavor and skimpy in its portions. The beer was very good, some consolation. read more

Our second evening's restaurant staying in DT Montreal. We were only a few blocks away, but we headed out late and places seemed to be closing up or just not that interesting. Well, this place was still open, and it was fairly crowded. I loved the eclectic vibe of the place, a bit hipster, but definitely showing the age of the city. My wife and I both had the poutine, but she went classic and I wanted the duck confit. She was raised here, so I think she was looking for a more conventional gravy, but I liked the upscale twist with the addition of the fois gras. I've heard great things about this place so when I was finally in Montreal for the weekend, I was excited to give them a try. I feel like I'm being generous even giving a 2 star. My husband and I ordered the Poutine au confit de canard & the fish and chips. The main thing I realized is that the food just lacked salt and flavor in general. The poutine is incredibly sweet so if you're used to a more salty poutine, I'm not sure if you'll like it. It has a taste of cinnamon/nutmeg that may be good for others but it just was not my favorite. It didn't help that it also came out cold. The fish and chips were also very bland with zero seasoning so I had to douse them in lemon to get any kind of flavor to them. Thankfully though, they were hot so I can't complain about that. Honestly, I could get past bland food but the main thing that completely ruined the experience though was the service. We were sat pretty quickly and immediately, our server asked if we were ready to order. I hadn't even had time to look at the menu and was kind of caught off guard so I smiled and kindly told her we needed a few minutes. No less than a minute later, she came again asking if we were ready yet. I apologized and told her that we were still looking and for whatever reason, she became visibly irritated. I wish I were kidding when I say she came another minute later rushing us and asking if we were finally ready. I said NO and she scoffed, rolled her eyes right in my face and then walked off. She then decided to come back for the last time and just kind of stand in front of our table looking really annoyed. I asked my husband if he wanted to just get up and go somewhere else because I didn't want to deal with her unprovoked attitude all night and she left. I started to think that maybe I was just taking her attitude the wrong way until I noticed a couple sit down at one of the tables outside and start to look at the menu on their phone. She went right over to them and very rudely yelled that the seats were for customers only. Instead of letting her know that they were literally looking at the menu, they just got up and left rightfully so. Thankfully another server ended up eventually coming over and we finally ordered through him. He was very, very kind and is the only reason for the extra star. Unfortunately, the experience was already ruined at that point and I just wanted to eat and leave. So having to deal with that and then getting subpar food was just the worst. I wish we could have had the same experience as many others have with their great reviews but it is what it is! NYK'S was a random find via Yelp while searching for places to eat. I normally don't read the reviews because often times, it seems nit picky or the day could have just been bad. I choose based on what restaurants have on their menu and the star rating. We chose NYK'S because they had poutine and appeared to have a great selection of beer (which is true). We were seated immediately with no reservation and greeted within 5 minutes by the waitress. I preferred the caipirinha and my husband ordered the stout. Both were good but I personally liked my caipirinha more. We also ordered a French onion soup each, he ordered the lamb sausage poutine, and I ordered the mushroom pasta. Absolutely EVERYTHING was phenomenal. I ended up eating everything (and I'm now in pain from overeating). The pasta was rich and creamy. My husband is disgusted by mushrooms and refuses to eat them but he always tries a bite of whatever I ordered. Well, he ended up having about 4 bites of my pasta with the mushrooms in it! That's how you know it's really good! His poutine was really good, too. It tasted fresh and had a nice flavor to it without being "pubby." It was like fancy poutine. My husband ended up getting another stout and I ordered the IPA. The IPA was amazing! My husband isn't big on IPAs but he regretted getting the stout instead of the IPA. It had such a nice fruity flavor to it. Our waitress was wonderful and she was such a hard worker. She was working the entire floor and was on top of it with every table all while being friendly and helpful when it came to questions about the menu. A delectable dinner! We found this place on yelp and were curious of the food. It's not a touristy place, so we got a nice authentic experience. We ordered salmon tartare, duck poutine, muscles, mushroom pasta, tofu burgers, duck wings. We also ordered an apple cider and glass of beer. The salmon tartar was delicious! The portions were perfect and it came with salad, fries, and some bread on the side. The pasta was great. The apple cider was very light, so I couldn't taste much cider, just beer. Having wandered around downtown for awhile, four of us were ready to get our drink on and this pub was just what the doctor ordered. Service was excellent. Special kudos to the gal that didn't give up finding a wine I would like. Having had a recent light lunch we weren't starving, but after a couple rounds of drinks it was time to get our Canadian Poutine experience started. Having experienced it before myself, I gave it a go but was once again aware that it's not my thing. The other three felt it was "too sweet". I didn't taste sweet, but knew what they meant because I could taste cinnamon. Leaving them to the generous pile of poutine, I ordered some Onion Soup au Gratin. Took my son on his first trip to Montreal and when we arrived at our hotel their restaurant was closed. They suggested NYK's up the hill. It happened to be St. Patrick's Day but we were able to get a table right away because it was only mid-afternoon. My son is extremely picky and struggles with food-aversion based on the look and smell. The people at the table next to us had a variety of food and my son noticed their fries and commented on how dark they looked (to him that means they are overcooked or "burnt" and he won't eat them). I ended up ordering the special - Irish Stew - and it was amazing. There was depth in the flavour and lots of meat. My son decided on the fish and chips. I asked the server if the cook could do the fries lighter and they said he could. When his food arrived he ate every bit of it and said it was the BEST fish and chips he has ever had. Nice little brassiere with in house brews. I must say the Québécois IPAs are much more palatable than our West Coast counterparts that have gotten atrociously over hopped and too "hot." The ambiance is casual and felt like a neighborhood bar. Service was very friendly if not a touch slow. I'm not sure how much of that may have been due to staffing though. We called to make reservations here and the guy on the phone was so sweet! He was so excited to be answering the phone and that made us so happy especially since COVID has affected many local restaurants in the area. When we arrived it was such a great ambiance- dark with some light and light music. Our waiter quickly sat us down and explained the menu to us. He was so nice and recommended some of the best items on the menu. The food was GREAT. The French onion soup is the best one I have ever had in my life and I can't wait to come back to Montreal for it again.
