After a long day exploring Montreal, Mom and Dad announced that we needed to "rest our legs and figure out our next adventure." I agreed. My legs are significantly shorter than theirs, so frankly I had been waiting for someone to acknowledge this. We stopped at Pub McLean's and grabbed a table on the big streetside patio across from Dorchester Square. It's a great place to sit outside, watch Montreal go by and contemplate important matters--such as where we were going next and whether anyone planned to feed me. Apparently, someone did. Almost as soon as we sat down, our waitress brought me a water bowl. Excellent start. Then she returned with PEPPERONI. Excuse me??? I have reviewed quite a few establishments on this trip, and I believe this is what the hospitality industry refers to as exceeding expectations. Meanwhile, Mom and Dad shared a pint and a cider while I settled in to watch the after-work crowd. The patio was lively without feeling chaotic, and there was plenty happening on the street to keep a professional people-watcher entertained. Mom and Dad thought we had stopped here for drinks. I now understand we stopped here for my pepperoni appointment. Dogba's verdict: 5 paws out of 5. Brenna was great!!!! We walked into this charming Irish pub (I love Irish pubs and secretly hoped there was an Irish band playing), found charming Brenna and treated ourselves to delicious Canadian beer. Brenna found out it was our anniversary and gave us a shot of half Jameson and half maple whisky. O. M. G. I've never been a fan of whisky until now! It tasted like maple wonderland. We love McLeans Pub, we've been coming as a group for 5 years now and at this point it's a known tradition by our colleagues that travel in for work events that we'll find our way here. I've been for food, it's typical good pub fair, and yes, it's your usual drinks, but it's the vibe that's unmatched. Our first day in Montreal and we started exploring just after lunch. We were looking for a casual pub for a drink and poutine. McLean's is a cool spot, very casual and we were seated right away. Our server was so nice and we chose our drinks and ordered poutine. Drinks came fast as did the poutine. The poutine was delicious, fries were a bit crispy, but creamy on the inside, covered in a rich gravy with cheese curds. Drinks were great too. I had the flame burger and while I was not asked how I wanted it cooked, it did come out just right. I am a loyal customer to McLean's. I've been a patron for years and years. Until tonight. I was treated horribly! I came in from out of town and couldn't wait to go to McLean's tonight with the family (as always!) to watch the Montreal Canadiens/Pittsburgh game. And, then, the hostess gave us the middle finger! I, and my family, had come into the restaurant to watch the game. The hostess told us that she was bringing us upstairs. I told her that I'd prefer to stay downstairs and that we'd wait for a table, since most of the Canadiens fans were leaving the restaurant to attend the game. I told her we wouldn't mind waiting a few minutes at the door. She said she was bringing us upstairs anyways because there were a lot of TVs and asked us to follow her. As we approached the top of the stairs, I said, "Excuse me, but I'd really rather be downstairs please." She rolled her eyes, stomped her feet and escorted us back downstairs with such an attitude. She slapped menus on a table downstairs and flung her arm out with the middle finger to us!!! Mind you, I am 57 years old, very bubbly and friendly. I was so pleasant to the girl. I was astonished! I called her manager Judy over. She told us that the hostess said she was having a bad day. Judy said that the hostess admitted that she had given us the middle finger and then she told Judy, "Just fire me." Judy (the manager) told me... "Well evvvverybody has bad days, so I told her I'm not going to fire her." (I never asked Judy to, nor did I want Judy to fire the hostess!!) Very unprofessional of Judy, as a manager, to be telling the patrons this information! ...Then Judy said, "But, would you like four shots to compensate for this?" I don't drink shots. Why would I want 4 shots??? I refused the shots and asked to speak with the owner. She asked which owner? ...Which owner?? I thought there was only one. She was challenging me to see if I knew the owner, Stuart. WHAT!!! 4 shots to compensate for the hostess of the restaurant giving me the middle finger??? A loyal patron for years. I came from out of town, I specifically chose McLeans out of hundreds of other places in downtown Montreal because it's a tradition for our family to watch a game there every time I come in, and I am SO disappointed because it ruined our night. My boys were embarrassed. The shots made it worse, because I took them and put them on the table beside us. We don't want 4 shots for being treated this way!! We were disgruntled and my young adult sons were very embarrassed. Thank goodness for our server Stephanie, who saved the night somewhat. They didn't do a thing for us. NOT A THING! I was looking for a sports bar to watch the NBA finals, this was rated it's number one on yelp so we tried it out. We were not steered wrong! This place is awesome. It is 1030 at night and it's perfectly packed. I had decided to meet up with some ex-work colleagues for some drinks since I was downtown but due to some people deciding to work from home and some people who worked onsite not being available after work, only one of my ex-work colleagues managed to show up. I arrived there alone at about 5:15pm-ish and as I walked in, I was asked whether I wanted to sit at the bar or sit at a table. I opted for a table. I was then given the food menu and a drinks menu. I took a look at the drinks menu and wasn't sure what I would have. I asked the server how large certain drinks were and then opted for the 3 litres of beer. My server asked if I was sure and then I mentioned that someone would be showing up and she informed me that 3 litres should be fine then since she has seen two people drink this before. For me, I had a rough idea of the amount since I've had or bought 2 litre soft drink bottles before at the grocery store but never drank a 2 litre bottle of soft drink myself in a single sitting. When my server brought the 3 litres of beer, I was shocked by the size of it as it didn't come in a standard pitcher but came in some sort of a dispensing container which was tube-shaped. I noticed that there was a patron WiFi access point name so I asked the server for the password while I waited for my friend to show up and she provided it to me. I browsed on my mini-tablet while I tried the beer and waited for my friend to show up. He showed up at about 6:00pm and he told me that he wasn't planning on drinking a lot but did luckily he did help me to go through the 3 litres of beer as it would have been too much for me to finish myself (although he only had 2 glasses of beer. I believe that the server that I had was finishing her shift so she dropped by our table to ask if we would mind settling up the bill which is normally what happens due to tips, etc. and it wasn't an issue so I paid for the beer and we continued to drink at the table. The place does get loud in the evening so at times, it was difficult to hear my friend and I felt that I had to shout/yell. We left shortly after finishing the beer. In a rush to leave, I forgot that I left my umbrella at the side of the table and as I was going home on the metro, I remembered. I called and the person I spoke with informed me that there were a few umbrellas in their lost & found that matched my description. As I would be downtown again the following day, I asked if I could pick it up tomorrow and was informed that I just needed to ask for the "lost & found" area. I showed up the following day during my lunch and when I mentioned to the hostess that I was a patron last night and forgot my umbrella at the side table, she immediately handed it to me without me having to go through the "lost & found" area. The only minor point that I had to say about my experience in McLean's Pub is that they either don't have or don't advertise any 5a7 special pricing as I didn't see any mention of it in the menu or on the table. read more

I stopped in after a long walk looking for a quiet pint or two's refreshment. I certainly got that along with a friendly chat with the barmaid who was attentive, but gave space as well. There's a good selection of draught beers and spirits, enough to cater for all tastes. I didn't try any of the food so cannot comment on that. With lots of TV's it's easy to watch most sports games. The atmosphere was great in the middle of the day. Our bartender Angie was so sweet and very attentive. She gave us some great advice about where to go and what to do while here. While flying from California to Montreal, I found McLean's on yelp. I sent a message asking if they could hold a table for my group so we can watch the Ducks v Sens game. I got an immediate response from the owner it was no problem, but no sound as the Habs game would trump our game. No problem! When we got there, bad news. Rogers TV blocked our game. No worries we still had to eat. We were led to the back, past the slot machines, and up the stairs to a cozy nook all of our own. There were tvs surrounding us, just too bad it wasn't our game. Our server was excellent. She first asked each of us our name, wrote it down, and then wrote our order based on our names. By the middle of the evening she actually called to us by name. How personal! She was sassy and she was organized. We did have 1 or 2 orders mixed up, but it was corrected. She even divided our cheque based on party rather than giving us one big bill. Maybe they do that in Montreal but we don't get that luxury in California! I can't find anything bad about the place.. .well except our game was blacked out, but that's Rogers TV, not the bars. Like a warm blanket on a cold winter day, this oasis on the middle of downtown has served me and my friends well for about 25 years. Like Neil Young sang about a small town in the song Helpless, "All my changes were there" That's how I feel about McLean's. It's the friendly staff, the old wood tables, chairs and wall paneling, the TVs, the pool tables upstairs, the Habs games watched, and the time Carolina beat us in the playoffs and my buddy Rick came as close as I have ever seen to a live heart attack. The memories, the dates, the times we came here to pre-drink, post drink, and those other nights when we just stayed put here the whole time. The stories I could tell would only be rivalled by those about the Peel Pub...(not the new bullshit location next door, the real one on the corner of St. Catherine and Peel, may god rest its soul) The food here is average pub fare but always hits the spot. Talk about disappointed. I went in for a bite to eat and a drink or two , and ended up coming out feeling like I was robbed . To be clear , the waitress and bartender were awesome , but the food and the prices were downright criminal . First up was my fish and chips . The fish was some kind of bottom feeder junk fish . If it was cod as they stated ,it was older than king Neptune. Not only was it rancid , the French fries and the fish looked as they had been deep fried in heavy duty industrial tractor oil . I also had two double crown royals . The drinks were decent though . The shocker was the price. $87 for rancid fish and chips , and 2 doubles . That is with 15% tip . I came in for a pint (or too many) after a long day of work and was taken aback by how friendly the staff was. I believe the bartender's name is Angie. She never left my glass empty for more than a moment without checking in. The Guinness was cold and perfectly served. The price for a pint was a bit steep but I guess it's downtown Montréal in 2021 so it's not all that bad. The only mediocre thing I noticed were a lot of wires hanging down from the TVs near the front of the bar. Somewhat unsightly. It could easily be tidied up by management if they took the time. While on our trip to Montreal, Candace and I accidentally stumbled into the world's worst place. We promptly left and headed next door and found McLean's. To be fair, anything would have looked great in comparison, but McLean's was cool regardless. It happened to be Comedy Open Mic night, which we were a bit trepidacious about, but it ended up being really fun. We saw some good acts and also some other acts. The last act of the night was the bartender. I'll use that as a smooth transition into discussing the service. The bartender was great. I've always considered tending bar to be an art, and Peter was clearly very skilled technically. Watching him perform brought about pure pleasure. It's always a toss up whether or not your drink is going to be satisfyingly strong, but Peter was definitely generous. He also remembered my name throughout the night, which is always appreciated. If I had one complaint, it's that he could have been tidier, but I'm probably just being up tight. read more

The menu is extensive, including a lot of the usual pub fair. I went for a French onion soup and a sub. Everything was great. They have a nice selection of beers to chose from too. I came to watch football and my favourite celebrity Taylor Swift is dating one of the players, I simply yelled omg yes Taylor when she came on the screen and be brutally told me off.
