Spectacular spot! Very cozy inside, dimly lit with little lights at each table. Stone walls, oil paintings and antique decor. All the plates are different and unique from each other. We ordered the Paloma mocktail which was extra tasty. Starters were the brioche bread that was baked with a crispy top and the herb butter paired very nice. We also got the asparagus and scallops. I was thinking it would be the whole scallop, but it was cut into little pieces and put on top of the asparagus. For the entrees we got the filet and another steak I can't remember the name?? The filet was cooked to absolute perfection, crispy on the inside and so tender and soft on the inside. We got one of each of the sauces as well as the sides. The butter sauce was my favorite. The asparagus came with such an earthy sauce it was a flavor bomb in your mouth. Service is great, only thing is the server forgot about my Diet Coke for 15 minutes but no worries on that. We had one of our best meals in a very long time and we are from Los Angeles. The mushroom parfait we shared was divine. Flavorful and sublime at the same time. I had the perfectly crispy and tender duck with a red wine sauce and my husband had the mushroom tagliatelle. Both were spot on. The chocolate coffee mousse to share was a perfect ending. I'm not exactly sure how Barroco landed on my radar; I was taking Montreal recommendations from multiple outlets, and when I was organizing them it caught my eye as a potential place to grab dinner. Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal. read more

Great food and wine pairings. I went with a group of 9 and they have some special order and reservation requirement but they did take us in same day. The service was great and the space is cute. It's small and cozy but that also means the noise level can get pretty loud plus there's music playing (good music). I retuned to the states craving their braised beef. I had it paired with celery root mash, which I didn't think I'd like but I loved it. I also had the fried chicken skin salad and it too was delicious. We arrived at six and were seated immediately. If you plan to arrive later, reservations are recommended as they were completely full at right when we left. Great wine selection plus a full bar with some signature house cocktails. I had been drinking whiskey earlier in the day, so I opted for a scotch - Dalmore 12. We started with a mushroom dish with a variety of mushrooms and three different sauces. With the medley of mushrooms and sauces, every bite was completely different. The sauces were so good that we ordered some bread to clean up the dish! For the main course, we shared the snow crab tonnarelli as well as the duck breast along with endive salad and sweet mashed potatoes. Both dishes were superb. I preferred the crab but my wife raved about the duck. For dessert we shared the chocolate mousse topped with hazelnut and chocolate nibs. It was on the richer and thicker side of mousses. Amazing hybrid British and Spanish cuisine in a cozy and bustling space with some eclectic touches. The paella is very solid with fresh seafood and spicy chorizo. The beef Wellington is a must order - the fillet is perfectly seasoned and a nice medium rare on the inside with a flaky crust on the exterior. Even the mashed potatoes were perfection. If you have room, get an order of the homemade brioche rolls which are sprinkled with a touch of sea salt. The food is impeccable. Every dish was delicious, great aroma, and presentation. However, the price is definitely on the high side. We got 3 main entrees to share between 2 people, and each entree was between $80-90. The total came out to be $250 USD after tip and tax, which was a bit high given the portion sizes of the mains were much smaller than I expected. I was tempted to order more, but decided against it because everything on the menu seemed really over-priced. A couple other things that didn't factor into the rating: We didn't get bread for the table, which was a first for a $$$$ restaurant, and I was also sad that they don't serve the beef wellington anymore, which was the main reason I had wanted to come here. read more

I visited Barroco about three weeks ago while in Montreal with two of my friends. It was a Friday night and our very first night in Montreal (it was a four day trip). The restaurant is small, cozy, dark, romantic and inviting. We were sat at a corner table and our server was excellent (I wish I could remember his name). We were starving and essentially ordered the whole menu. Our selections included the following: Pata negra de Bellota (20g), pan con tomate, Pieuvre grillée, pommes de terre rattes vapeur, aïoli, paprika, Burrata du moment, Papardelle Vesuvio, burrata, and the Entrecôte AAA Angus (20oz), pommes de terre, bagna càuda, hareng fumé with the truffle butter and the chimichurri. Every last bite was delicious, but my favorites were the papardelle and the entrecôte. For dessert, we had the Crémeux au chocolat noir which was spectacular. All of the food was amazing and the service was excellent that night. This was the second best dinner of the weekend. I'm sure by now you're thinking, "if everything was so great, why only four stars?" Well, I'll tell you why... Unfortunately, I left my card at the restaurant. I suspect it fell under the table or behind the bench we were sitting on. I didn't notice immediately because we went back to our apartment after dinner. The very next morning, I noticed my card was missing. I called the restaurant several times and left a voice message. No one called me back. Then a little later I called again and got the owner on the phone and explained what happened. He said they'd look and call me if they found anything. I called again a couple of hours later and still they hadn't had a chance to look. So, in the late evening on the way to dinner at 212 Montreal, I stopped in to ask if it had been found. I was informed by the owner that the table was occupied and they couldn't bother the patrons to look for my card. That part I understood, but those patrons weren't sitting there all day, they surely had a chance to look for my card early in the day at ANY point. Anyway, I left my number with our server from the night before, thinking he'd surely let me know whether or not they found the card because he'd been so nice the night before, but NOPE! Nothing! Nada! I think it was extremely inconsiderate of the staff, especially considering I was traveling. For all they knew I may not have had another card! The customer service received as a whole was not the best at all, and left a very bad taste in my mouth. read more

For appetizers, starting with the oysters was a great choice after which the brioche bread and butter, melted in our mouths. For our mains, my girlfriend had the Paella which she loved and I had the braised beef which was extremely soft and filled with flavor. The service was carefully timed. Our meal began auspiciously with a good cocktail and glass of wine. La Portena's salade laitue with "trout caviar" was tasty enough, but overdressed and did not seem to merit the price. I began with the jamon- the pieces were properly sliced, and the pan con tomate was savory, but a little soggy with oil. The wait for the main courses was interminable. The server finally came to apologize, on the second round of apologies he mentioned that my steak took so long to cook because it was a "big piece of meat." La Portena's fletan (halibut) was expertly prepared, but the thin rib steak was overcooked. The "bagna cauda" potatoes that came with it were very good as was a side order of mushrooms.
