Discovered this place on a random whim but it was closed and then their online store was closed until end of November. The day they reopened their online store I purchased caps for gifts. The two favorites are the SF Giants (orange and black) and the Mash Transit with SF map printed on the side. THE ORDER. Delivery was quick! Unfortunately out of the 6 caps, 2 had to be returned and replaced. The caps get printed in Italy and it was not attractive to see San Francisco not fully spelled out or with missing letters. Been in contact with Mash Transit and they were very kind to get every replaced and fixed. Great service! Please design 49ers and Warrior caps as well. Until the next review...

MASH carries a very simple front rack that seemed like it would work with my bike. I tried contacting the shop for help but got no response, so I asked to return it. At any other bike shop - and to be clear this place, in appearance and spirit, is arguably more of a bike-lifestyle shop - this would be a straight-forward matter. The unmasked kid working the door initially took the rack back, but then asked if it was missing hardware. I assured him it wasn't, all the original packaging was included. Then he said they couldn't accept it because it was "all chewed up." He pointed to tiny areas where the cheap finish came off as a result of assembly. He then offered me approximately half of what I paid for it just days earlier. This is cheap and disreputable, and for me, doesn't match my experience at any other shop; or any other business for that matter. I half-assembled the rack but it was never used because they didn't supply a bolt long enough to go through my brake hole. So MASH won't stand behind their products. And they won't stand behind their return policy, which states that an item must be in "sellable condition", in new, unused condition in its original packaging. You'd be better off going with any number of local bike shops, where they stand behind what they sell and the people they sell it to.

He even advised me on some nearby places I could donate my old bike (Bike Kitchen, Salvation Army). Only 4 stars because the repair shop two doors down was a bit curt with me. I brought my old bike in for repair and was immediately told I should just get a new bike, and I felt like I had to pry a bit to understand why. Fortunately I was able to step outside and call my cyclist friend who confirmed that what they were saying made sense, but my initial conversation made me feel like I was being upsold.

So if you need help in the cycling dept for just a quick repair or fitting for a whole new ride they will get you right and have you leave laughing and excited to roll out not feeling unsure if you actually got what you wanted but beyond your expectations and all at fair price especially with the economy... so support your local shop instead of using the internet .. don't risk getting your package stolen .. instead enjoy the experience of a friendly bike shop make new friends share ideas learn new things. But it bothered me so much to see that, so here I am. Reading that review now before I write this one, I don't see a trace of truth in what Nick noticed. Maybe Nick knows a competitor. Phillip felt genuine, knowledgeable, understated. He listened well, asked lots of questions to help diagnose the issue, and made me feel welcome. He also fixed my bike's creak on the spot. I've been to so many bike shops. Enough to know how common it is to deal with young kids (and sometimes even adults) who are still trying to figure out who they are. This is not one of those shops. Phillips not a bro. He's a great person, and an even better mechanic. I'm definitely coming back to Pink Puffin.

They've settled in nicely and now have a nice inventory. Apparently, they've been a staple in Santa Cruz for some time. Anyway...about my experience yesterday. I stopped in on my way to my old favorite store, just to see if they had what I needed. I have already checked "In-Stock" inventory at the other store and knew they had the Park Tools Chain Tool that I needed. I was surprised that they not only had the model the other store had, they had two other models. One of higher quality and one of lesser (a starter "lite" version of a chain tool). I still went with the one I was originally looking at, but it was nice to see the options. I didn't expect to have that much of a choice. When I stopped in, there was only one employee working, but it didn't feel that way. He was helping a gentleman at the maintenance counter, a lady choosing a bike for her son and me all at the same time...and doing it well. I was even amazed that when I asked if they had chain tension clip (a small hooking clip that holds the chain where you need it while working with unconnected links). He simply said, "We usually make them out of old spokes...give me a minute and I'll make you one." It took two, but it was the perfect length and he made it for me for free. What a deal!!! While I don't expect them to have everything I will ever need...I usually have very specific needs for cycling gear, components and bikes, I will always check them first going forward!!!

Took my bike in for tune up and suspension service. It took more than a month to get my bike back…read more There was no proactive communication from the shop during this time. I called repeatedly and the staff needed urging to think to call the Santa Cruz shop that handles the suspension service to understand the delay When I finally got the bike back, the front wheel pointed to the right when the handlebars were in a position to have the bike go straight ahead, and the front tire was deflated from a loose valve. I took it back to have this corrected, and when I brought the bike home the steering was stiff and the bike was unstable and felt unsafe to ride. It turned out the staff had identified a problem with the headset that they had not been able to fix and did not make me aware of this. Multiple fails at repairing the bike, poor communication, Would definitely not recommend having your bike serviced here. Hundreds of dollars spent, and total frustration and no bike for a month.
