You know me, into style regardless what set of wheels you rocking. Obviously, my friends are too. Discovered this place on a random whim but it was closed and then their online store was closed until end of November. The day they reopened their online store I purchased caps for gifts. The two favorites are the SF Giants (orange and black) and the Mash Transit with SF map printed on the side. THE ORDER. Delivery was quick! Unfortunately out of the 6 caps, 2 had to be returned and replaced. The caps get printed in Italy and it was not attractive to see San Francisco not fully spelled out or with missing letters. MASH carries a very simple front rack that seemed like it would work with my bike. When I assembled it though, none of the supplied hardware was long enough for mounting on my bike, and there were other fit issues that suggested it just wasn't the right rack for my setup. I tried contacting the shop for help but got no response, so I asked to return it. At any other bike shop - and to be clear this place, in appearance and spirit, is arguably more of a bike-lifestyle shop - this would be a straight-forward matter. The unmasked kid working the door initially took the rack back, but then asked if it was missing hardware. I assured him it wasn't, all the original packaging was included. Then he said they couldn't accept it because it was "all chewed up." He pointed to tiny areas where the cheap finish came off as a result of assembly. He then offered me approximately half of what I paid for it just days earlier. This is cheap and disreputable, and for me, doesn't match my experience at any other shop; or any other business for that matter. I half-assembled the rack but it was never used because they didn't supply a bolt long enough to go through my brake hole. So MASH won't stand behind their products. And they won't stand behind their return policy, which states that an item must be in "sellable condition", in new, unused condition in its original packaging. You'd be better off going with any number of local bike shops, where they stand behind what they sell and the people they sell it to. read more

I have ridden my bike by Mash many times, and today was my first experience going into the store. Man, what a bike shop! For a tiny shop they sure do have a lot to offer. So many saddle options, helmets, pedals, wheels, hats, clothing, bags....anything you would need. When I walked in there was a guy in glasses working on a bike and a couple of other bike guys hanging out shooting the shit, always a good sign! A nice, unpretentious bike shop. I worry sometimes being a not-so-saavy lady cyclist going into a 'foreign-to-me' bike shop....sometimes bike shop employees can be snotty and patronizing. After chatting with them a little I felt much more confident knowing the staff at Mash is friendly and ready to help you with anything you need. The main reason I went into Mash was to get some new pedals and also to get some feedback on a bike I just bought off craigslist. They have a great pedal selection, I was able to find the same pair I had on my last bike! A gentleman named Mike also helped me find the best water bottle cage to suit my needs. You have to get credit to MASH for the extraordinary growth they've experienced and contributed to these past few years, and this store is another huge step for them in a forward direction. The staff here are extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and it's simply because they love what they're doing. They love working with bicycles and the joy they get from that as well as helping others regarding bicycles is evident. The selection of items inside is mind-boggling, especially compared to the relatively small space. There are very few inexpensive things inside of the MASH store, but that's because there are practically no items of low quality. The main focus is obviously bicycles, and particularly the framesets MASH continually collaborates on with Cinelli. However, there's also the occasional rare vintage bike, and recently they've begun expanding their selection, including Linus bikes, to appeal to more commuters. Amongst other items beside bicycles are performance and casual clothing, books, and bags. The MASH store is the only vendor I know of in the country that has a relationship with Lazy Monk bags from Minnesota. These bags are beautiful and also highly functional, much like the rest of inventory at the MASH store. While they don't have a dedicated "mechanic" yet, they have a complete range of tools and I've found the staff to always be more than willing to help me out with a problem. I feel like this is a store you can either hate or love, and personally, I love it. read more

I'm new to road biking, and live in the neighborhood so I brought in a old Titanium Merlin that was my father in laws. He passed away a few years ago and I decided it was time to get one of his prized possessions back on the road. Mike was super helpful, and offered to take a look at it, make sure everything was in good shape, and see what it would cost to get it running. When I went in to pick it up the next day, they showed me all that they did, which was essentially a full tune up, addition of a longer neck stem, seat adjustment, and removal of some parts I didn't need, they wouldn't take any money for the work. Mike was inspired by my story about my father in law, Tony, who was actually killed on a bicycle by a drunk driver. He wanted to help get this bike back on the road and make sure that I could keep my father in laws memory alive in his bike. For that I am extremely grateful. This is a small shop, but you can tell all the guys are passionate about cycling and helping others with the sport. I haven't had a retail experience like this in a while and I had to share. This is a very small bike shop, catering to a very niche audience, and I'm not that audience particularly. For bike shops (check out my bike shop review list) I tend to not judge a store just for that, but I'm not convinced that it is the BEST store at what it does - expensive components for building up, or buying, track / racing / single speed bicycles, and their prices are bit of sticker-shock. However, the staff is certainly friendly, and has some items not findable in other stores. Like all bike shop reviews, the most important section: Go here if: You want the high end bikes and components and gear they sell, and the good customer service that you'd expect when buying that type of thing. You're close by, and it's convenient, but you don't want to go the extra couple of blocks to shops with more full repair services. Don't go here if: You want a big _variety_ of high end stuff (there are larger and better equipped shops in that case) You want to buy more normal / mainstream parts, components, bikes, repairs. read more

What the heck. We are visiting from LA. My friend is a huge fan of their stuff so we decided to buy him a mash branded hat and some accessories. There were about 5 guys working but nobody seemed to greet us in the first place. My bf needed to initiate a conversation to get what he wanted. And we called my friend to show what they have and the main guy (owner?) started to play music really loud when your customer is having an important conversation about a purchase. What the heck. Nobody seemed interested or caring about why and what we visited their shop for. Even if we are only buying some hats and accessories, we are your customers. They were very friendly to their fixie Foo buddies though. Is it some sort of customer discrimination..?? Do we have to be cool to be treated good and welcomed? They definitely have some cool stuff but nice customer service comes first when you choose a bike shop. If you're not their kind, you're not welcomed here. read more

If it wasnt for Mash I wouldnt be riding bicycles. Their passion and love of cycling got me into riding a bike. I rode a conversion fixed gear in san diego, then got a track bike and fell feet first into cycling. Fast forward 7 years and now I am living in SF and am now supporting the company by coming in as many times as I can to buy their awesome one of a kind fun stuff. I bought a frame from MASHSF in May 2017. This frame has cracked and is ruined in 2 years. I know that I rode more mountain/track/road than anyone in my state this last year. I still do not expect my 800$ frame to break in 9700 miles. I can put that many miles on a frame in 6 months, i just ride multiple bikes. Im disappointed in their customer service. The responses I get are dodgy. I am saying if you ride hard do not touch this frame. It looks pretty and I tried it, but the customer service guy is a pure flake. I recommend buying a bike from a large company that can handle warrantying a cracked frame without feeling a loss. Mash is pure crap. I ride the most and my attachment proves that. This frame is stamped with Mash on the headtube. I am sooo disappointed that i liked this frame. These cracks are a material defect on the dimples of the chainstays. Although the shop does lean towards a specific audience in what they sell, they do what bike shops do best - fix bikes. MASH contains the normal set of tools and many more as any bike shop would possess. In any case that I need help fixing a bike or for bike-related advice, I would rather come to MASH for their knowledge and advice, friendliness, and excellent costumer service. Plus, the shop is located right next to the beginning of the famous flat "The Wiggle" route. MASH is your local bike shop and retail store for their famous Cinelli x MASH brand,. Entering their shop, I would not expect to find the widest variety of sales. All-in-all, I have had nothing but positive experiences at the MASH store, and if I could not find something I was looking for, the staff always directed me to a shop that did have it. Have you ever watched a skate video and saw your favorite skater pop into a skate shop. Then one day you find yourself at the VERY SAME SHOP and there your roll model was?! Rolling into the shop and seeing someone from the latest installment of the Mash transit movie behind the counter always brings a smile to my face. The feeling when entering the shop, two things happen. It's an explosion of visual stimulation. Me personally i see everything and want to try every single item out. The glass case with all the sunglasses, patches, sharp things, historic memorabilia, and so much more! I just want to engulf myself in all of it. Two, it is closed quarters, it isn't the biggest shop BUT! Its like that donut that is small but JAM PACKED with flavor. And you totally want to come back for more! In many ways this is my happy place. Years of pushing down and pulling up on my pedals, i can call this place home. Mike and everyone that has had the pleasure of working at this Sanchez St. or 14th St. location has for sure made the shop grow in many different ways. The creativity and culture that oozes out of the door is always refreshing to get caught up on by Mike or the staffers (Brandon is my favorite because i get lost in his eyes...) I digress, Mash Transit is a place for cycling enthusiasts, a place to collaborate and also get a fresh lesson point of view. San Francisco is maybe the most lucky place in the world that gets to shelter such a chill brand. I enjoy that there isn't an elitist vibe and it will embrace you with any style or attitude you bring to its address. I've never stopped being a fan of this brand and i know i never will. These guys are the best! I needed a part for my Cinelli Experience road bike. They were able to track it down. I needed help with my Cinelli Vigorelli and they were able to assist. Every time I've purchased something from them, or needed help with my bike, they've always been super helpful, and provided great customer service. What I truly appreciate about these guys is, not only their infinite knowledge and wisdom about all things bikes, but they have a great, friendly, down-to-earth attitude. No snobbery here! Their prices on parts, I feel, are more than reasonable, and competitive, based on the quality, and brands, they offer. I have to admit, also, I love the layout of the shop. Every time I walk in here, I am compelled to buy something...anything; even the smallest item. The assortment of Cinelli's is wonderful, too (yes, yes, I am a firm advocate of the Cinelli brand, so I am a bit biased). However, when the time comes to build, yet another, unnecessary, but nonetheless woefully desired bike, MASH Transit will be my first stop. I ordered a brand new Work frame on August 1st. The only option for shipping was 2day delivery. It arrived at my house in Seattle on August 15th (the whole time-space continuum thing really confuses me). It would have been fine if I wasn't forced to pay for 2 day shipping...Regardless, I joyously opened the box and this is what I found: 1) BENT & Twisted DROPOUT! I couldn't put my wheel on because the dropout was so bent and crooked that the axle didn't even fit in the opening. This wasn't damage from shipping, because the box is in fine shape. 2) Scratch in the clear coat on the head tube. 3) Red splotch of paint on the top tube. 4) No headset with the frame (website claims the frame includes headset...not the biggest deal in the world, but pretty annoying). I thought I was treating myself to something sweet after having two bikes stolen within one week. This is very frustrating and a huge let down...it also means I'm without a bike for quite a bit longer. When I nearly spent $1k on the frame alone, I thought I would be receiving a top notch piece of art. wrong didly-ong. The best part is that I have not received a response from the voicemail I left or the email I sent through their online contact form. What the heck do I do? I'm not happy. This bike industry professional will not be spreading good words about Cinelli...though I'll kindly give them a chance to redeem if they ever get back to me. read more

Been here a few of times over several years, as they were a bikeshop to my office. I can see that it is more of a niche shop, and I'm sure they have the clientele they cater to precisely. However, on several occasions I experienced walking out with products that work exactly what I needed. Quite possibly the best bike shop ever. It borders on curated art gallery in its perfection and brand designs. I have been in the shop and dealt with the website and have never had a bad experience.
