I bought my first '10-speed' bike here in 1970. I had seen a plain white bike with Campagnolo parts, Mafac Racer centerpull brakes (I had been told those were good brands), and sew-up tires--it was a Coppi for $327 (a lot of money, but I had sold a motorcyce so I had the cash). After looking at every shop in the Bay area, I returned one day to look again. The gentleman running the shop was kind of a crusty old dude, and came out of the back room telling everyone to get out of the shop--it was lunch time. For some reason, I didn't think he meant me, too. Every one left, he closed and locked the door, so I followed him to the back room and asked him about that white bike. He was to the point, but nice. He said they only imported 300 to the U.S. I said I want it. He took some measurements, sat me on the bike and had me do movements, then told me it will be ready in 2 days. When I picked up the bike he had me ride it and tell him what I thought--it felt like a perfect fit. I bought some cycling shoes, and shorts (wool, of course). At the time, I had no idea who Fausto Coppi or Oscar Juner were, but there was a photo of a young bicycle racer on his bike at a track, being held up by someone. The old man said that was him. I thought that was cool. I started racing in 1985, and raced for nearly 30 years. I am 77 now, still riding for fun and fitness. And I still fondly remember my first 10-speed and that old man. read more

If you're a person of Asian descent I might suggest finding a different bike shop. The two men working were rude, dismissive and condescending. It was if I had inconvenienced them by walking in. Initially I gave the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they were having a rough day. (You never know what people are going through.) Absolute Ripoff. I bought a bike from Pros Closet and it arrived needing handlebars to be rotated and pedals to be installed. I had a broken collarbone and was new to cycling at the time. I took it in late afternoon and they charged me $150 for what should have been a $25 job because it was an expensive bike and they said that it would take 5 days to do as they needed specialists because of the electronic gear shifters. After realising I had been cheated, I went back the next morning 1st thing to collect the bike as I now had researched what needed to be done and low and behold it was already waiting for me completed. Miraculously it had been completed without the specialist but I still had to fork out the $150 for their 5 minutes work. They are thieves. read more

Walked into the shop to see about repairing my broken derailleur, one technician was super nice, helpful and patient. While he was inside, at the counter, calculating the estimated cost for repair, I approached another technician, outside, locking up a new bike for the out door show room. I gently asked if I could ask a question? She turned to me... (Knowing they no longer sell Raleigh bikes), I asked her if she had any suggestions for bikes comparable to the Raleigh? With an irritated tone, and attitude, she said "We don't sell Raleigh!" I was shocked and said, "Yes, I know. That is why I asked if you might suggest something comparable." She huffed another retort and said she was in the middle of something. I ended by responding... "Bad customer service. Got it. Thanks." You gauged for yourselves. How crazy is it to expect a customer might ask you questions through the course of your day, in a retail store? Is your job so imperative, you can't stop for 3 seconds and politely say, SURE, NO PROBLEM, LET ME JUST FINISHE UP SOMETHING REAL QUICK AND GET BACK TO YOU. Am I crazy to think I can ask any worker in a retail store for a suggestion? Am I some kind of horrible person because I asked for a suggestion? Was that ruining a workers productivity to take 3 extra minutes or even less to respond with customer service and people skills? You guys tell me. I'm all ears. read more

This is going to be one of those "layered" write ups because, I haven't been even picked up my new bike.... Amongst the wild times we are in, bikes are on short supply, in particularly bikes for a 6'4 tall human looking for the right combo of road and trail. After contacting 6 bike shops in the city, after a long line to American Cyclery, i met Bradley (owner) and his team. Needless to say, I have already told Bradley how appreciative I am for the amount of time and expertise him and his team gifted me the last 2 times I've been in the shop. At this current state I'm a bike buyer with analysis paralysis (it's a big purchase for me, especially after just having my bike stolen), and the response by American Cyclery's team has left me with all the warm and fuzzies. Really wished I could give this store a good rating since it's the neighborhood bike shop. My experience with this place is like one at untrustworthy auto shops, but other people my have better experiences. This is what happened to me. Woke up excited Saturday morning to bring my dads old bike down to the shop to get their opinion on servicing or upgrading the bike. Thinking that I'd be supporting the neighborhood bike shop, I wanted to buy my tools and supplies there. When I arrived at the shop a woman greeted me after I waited outside for awhile. As I told her my situation, it quickly became apparent that she was not wanting to guide me through the things I needed to buy. I must've said some triggering words like "modernize my bike" or "possible e-bike conversion" for her to act so dismissive towards me. As I was speaking her phone rang and she walked away saying she needed to grab it. Fine, no problem, I can see they were busy with servicing bikes and phone calls. When she came back another customer approached the shop (I was the only customer at the time). She helped him immediately and brought him inside and waited on home for over 10 minutes. At this time I've been sitting patiently at the shop for over 30 minutes. When she got done with the other customer she was annoyed when she saw me. At this point I told her I'd like to replace my cables, housing, and pedals. So she brought me into the store, told me to look at the handlebars as she went to go get the supplies. THEN SHE STARTED SHOUTING TO HER COWORKERS THAT I WAS A CRAZY CUSTOMER AND SHE COULDN'T HANDLE THIS SHIT. Wtf? I've been sitting waiting patiently to give this local business my money. After yelling to her coworker she went outside to help the next customer. I didn't know what to do so I left. read more

I was cruising down Oak today after a ride to the ocean - I must have been going close to 30 MPH because I was riding in sync with with the flow of traffic hitting all green lights. I had an off white bag in my left hand waiving like a flag in heavy wind. suddenly, some guy, who probably never even saw me, pulled out in front of me to make a quick and unannounced right turn. luckily, there was no one in the crosswalk because he likely would have just come to a dead stop and I would have gone through his back windshield. instead, my brakes did their job but because of my soaring momentum, I was propelled through the air over my handlebars, landing directly on my head (which made an impressive smacking sound), immediately falling into a somersault. to the couple out for a run waiting for their light to turn so they could safely cross the busy intersection with hands over agape mouths stentorian in disbelief, I said, while lying splattered on the road, "and that, is why you wear a helmet when you ride." I have american cyclery to thank for my stylish and clearly effective helmet. I bought my bike from these guys - I bought my 40 year old virgin style blinky lights here - I buy my inner-tubes and tire pumps and trendy bike shorts from these guys. I do this because I actually do peruse other shops just to make sure I'm making a wise purchasing decision. time and time again, I am unimpressed with my shopping experience at other shops compared to how welcoming and obviously experienced the guys at american cyclery (both stores) are. read more

SHORT CHICKS NEED BIKES TOO! This store actually had a range of bikes for me to chose from in women's XS (as well as men's L for my fiance). It has the attitude of the little bike shop that COULD - as opposed to the myriad of small and large shops alike that kept telling me "No, they don't make smaller bikes." While most of the bike shops in SF are friendly enough, it's the can-do attitude that will make you want to buy here because of the belief that they can and will find not A bike, but YOUR bike. FYI they make a variety of bikes for us petite creatures and in a more diverse range of price brackets than anywhere else we looked (and boy did we look!). Our salesman, Mike, simply explained the difference in specs on each without trying to up-sell us on a "tricked out" bike. The best part of which was coming home and finding out the MSRP online to be higher than what we paid. Being able to actually RIDE the bikes I was interested in around a few block radius, up and down some hills really sealed the deal for me. The bike I purchased initially had some gearing issues but when tweaked was my perfect ride. What a relief to have that corrected than to bring it home and instantly have problems. The key is CONFIDENCE. After meandering with dissatisfaction through 7 bike stores I was sure of my choice here. Super friendly and helpful staff here. When I first walked in, a couple customers were being helped and the staff went out of their way to give them a ton of options. After they left, I had some questions about a Soma seat and the gentleman helping me helped to verify that the seat was in fact synthetic (yay vegan bike saddle!) When I asked what kind of attachments I would need to get it on my 60s Hercules roadster, he showed me a quick $3 clamp that would do the trick, as well as a brand new pole with clamp. Of course, he could have really tried to sell me on the $20 pole and clamp, but he didn't! I appreciated that a lot, because it really wasn't necessary. Then as I was being checked out, the cashier told me he just got a cool Hercules and thought I'd appreciate it. Outside in a cargo u-haul van was a beautiful gold Hercules. Totally glad he showed it to me and totally glad I came in for my biking needs. Looking forward to checking out the other location soon. read more

And the place has HISTORY! and a great location right next to GG Park. The staff is really great, and shop dog wouldn't leave me alone. Thought it was a five minutes adjustment but Ray told me there is no such thing... And he was right. Liv bike was purchased on line but delivered to Danville, a Liv dealer. But all the shop did was install front wheel and seat post. Ray is still working on bike to make it per LIv's standards. Thank god Ray caught all the mistakes. He is the best. I ordered a bike, which was on back order from the dealer during Covid. 2 weeks later I found the same bike at another shop in Tahoe and I called to check on my order at American Cyclery before buying. Bradley was completely honest with me that he couldn't be sure when the dealer would be able to fulfill and advised me to buy the bike that I found at the other shop. He didn't have to do that and passed on a $5k+ sale. I bought the bike at the other shop but will be bringing it for service and everything else at American Cyclery. read more

I really like this place because of their massive selection. Road bikes, fixed gear, etc. I haven't bought an entire set up from here before but I've bought bits and pieces. My girlfriend spent 3 weekends coming here (since we only have time to go to SF on the weekends) to ask questions about bikes, test ride, etc. The guys here were really patient (sometimes you can feel the annoyance of some sales guys at other shops when they know you're not going to buy something right off the bat). I thought this was crucial. She ended up buying her frame at this shop if that says anything. Can't say much about repairs since I get all my service done on my own or in Oakland (Manifesto bicycles) so I don't have much to add for that category. read more

I'm wouldn't necessarily say that I'm someone with an aversion toward change, but I definitely admit to being comfortable with routine. For example, I tend to stick to the same basic items on a menu when I frequent a restaurant. Whether I'm studying or having a beer with friends, I typically hang out at the same local haunts as well. I suppose I'm just ultra fond of familiarity. Needless to say, this applies to places where I buy material goods, or, in this example, get work done. My bike guy I've been going to (a friend's brother, who worked at Trek) just up and left for grayer skies (Portland) and I found myself without someone to turn to should bike problems arise. Perhaps fate exists and was looking out for me, because not long after the aforementioned friend moved, I stumbled across a fellow named Marcello who, during the course of our initial conversation, informed me that he worked at American Cyclery (Too). So later down the road when I was thinking of getting some upgrades and fixes for my beloved Atala, I thought that I'd give it a try. I took my bike into American Cyclery Too, but after I told them what I needed done, was sent across the street to American Cyclery. The folks I worked with (not only the owner, but other fellows in the shop) were an absolute pleasure from start to finish. See, I'm not a super legit hardcore biker. I know my bike and I love it, but I don't know ALL the fancy lingo or what is necessarily best for me. All I knew was that I wanted new tires, a new saddle and new grip tape. In the 30-45 minutes I was there, I also ended up settling on new brakes and having some stuff bent back into place. I got the more expensive tires as well, but I didn't feel like they were trying to up-sell me. Neither did I, at any point, feel like they were talking to me with any air of condescension. Employees took their time explaining the pros and cons of various products, and when I went back across the street to pick out a saddle, not only did they make certain that it was all manmade, but I even was measured to make certain the seat I decided on was a proper fit. Fancy! A few days later, I received a phone call from the store, saying that in the course of working on the bike, they discovered the handlebars were super bent, to the point of beyond safe. I totally trusted the person on the phone who said that I needed to get a new one installed. After all, my bike is 30+ years old and had most of the original parts, so it seemed about time for these parts to be replaced. The next week, I went in and picked up my bike, and I am super impressed with how good it looks and how well it rides. The cost of parts and labor came out to just what I expected it to be, and overall, I am extremely pleased with my experience here. Even though American Cyclery is a bit out of my way, I will definitely make a point to come here for future repairs or products. Not just because I don't like the hassle of change, but namely because it's well worth it to have a place you can trust with your prized belongings. read more

A guy named Jim came up and said $16 and did it for me while adding what else I should fix on my bike and most importantly-why. I'll be going back soon to change out my tires, my handlebars, my everything else that needs to be fixed. It was quick and painless. They guys there were great to me and not snobbish at all. Even tho during the quarantine they were very busy, I really appreciate the service they gave me and my girlfriend who didn't know much about bikes. At this time of June, most of the bikes they had in stock were over 1K (they sold out because gyms are closed) which was out of our price range at that moment, but the younger male working there explain why maybe our budget should change and not just get the cheapest out there.
