Even though DD Cycles didn't have what I was looking for, the staff gave me an overview of the current market environment and how supply chain was impacted by the pandemic. After, he told me what to avoid (like Craigslist), and where I can try my luck (like my neighborhood). Even though he knew I wasn't going to be a potential customer in the first 20 seconds, he still took his time sharing his expertise with a bicycle noobie like myself. He could've easily ended the conversation in the beginning like the 5 other places I reached out to around the area. Went in to show off my vintage bike which was a 1983 Bianchi Nuovo Racing down to the last detail from the catalog. He did not recognize it as such and immediately started trashing it as cheap Asian tubing. He claimed that the year-stamped derailleur must have been installed after-market as a joke. He claimed that real Columbus stickers could not rub off, without a real answer when I asked about the many rubbed-off stickers on the bikes hanging in the shop. He claimed that his own vintage 1979 Bianchi Pista was worth $20,000. Funny how a bike of similar vintage, make, and condition was worthless in my hands. We bought an electric bike online and the tire came back not straight. Called here last minute to get an electric bike trued and the person said to bring in the tire to make the service easier. He was able to fix the tire and charged me a reasonable price to repair it. Other bike shops in the area were not even willing to take a look at the tire since it was from an electric bike. While I don't like to spend time writing one star Yelp reviews and would much prefer to review businesses that have left me satisfied, I am writing this in hopes that I will save others from having a similar experience to the one I just had at DD Cycles. If I could sum up my advice in one short sentence it would be: get a quote before you leave your bike at this shop. If you don't, there's a very good chance you'll pay way more than you expected (and perhaps way more than you can afford!). After reading other reviews for DD Cycles, it's obvious I am not the only person who has had such an experience. I went to DD after a family member suggested I patronize my neighborhood bike shop, but after the experience I had I will never return to DD Cycles. I'll take some responsibility for not asking for a quote when I left my bike at the shop, but the owner told me to pass by the following day, giving me the impression that he was going to diagnose the problem before actually doing any work. I did my best to hide my shock when I returned to check up on the bike and was handed an invoice for close to $200. I've never been to a bike shop that does business this way and I am amazed this shop is still getting repeat customers. Every other shop I've gone to in the past will call me up to let me know how much a repair will cost before proceeding with the work. I'm still not sure why the work that was done cost so much and, similar to previous reviews, some of the work seemed unnecessary. Not only did I have to return to DD twice to point out problems caused by the repair(s), but I also had to spend time at home cleaning grease off of areas where the mechanic had handled the bike (brake levers, hand grips, shifters, frame, etc.). I expect a mechanic to have the decency to return a customer's bike to them as clean as it was when it arrived at their shop. In closing, whether you're heading to DD Cycles to get a flat tire fixed or need to have a bigger job done, ask the mechanic how much the work will cost before he puts it up on the stand. We all have the right to know how much a repair will cost and whether or not we can afford it. read more

Brought here my Radwagon to replace the break pads. The gentleman in the store was very polite and accommodating. He told me to bring it back next day because he was loaded with work. The next morning I showed up and he took my bike. It was ready the same afternoon and he did a great job. He charged me $80 including labor and parts. The breaks on my bike is better than ever, I literally fall over when I pull the handles:) he also made some slight adjustments to the steering at no cost. He is the guy who shoos away kids who come too close to the bikes and giggles at the novis riders on their Chinese made bikes with Western labels. He can be a pain in teh ass, but he will impart on you teh finer details of what it means to really be a bike rider. Here are a few things he deals with that no other stores in the city deals with. Bikes before 1950s Unique/rare bikes (Olympics, custom, one-offs) hard to find parts (C-Record, Columbia) Custom builds hand made parts (wheels, metal and frames) Custom modifications If you are looking for a black iodized C-Record Pista crank set or to drill out your seatpost from a 27.0 to a 27.2, then Mike is the guy for you. My boyfriend and I went in for a tune up. The owner proceeded to check our bikes and quoted us between $150-$180 for each. When we asked why so high, the reasons he gave didn't make sense, also one of the bikes was already in good condition. We thanked him for his time and drove to Sports Basement. When we arrived I was quoted $125 for my tune up, and they said my boyfriend's bike didn't need one, just a simple $15 adjustment on the brake pad along with a spoke adjustment that they were able to do for free. Although we wanted to support a small business, we saved a significant amount of money going elsewhere and received honest customer service. read more

Cruising on the Great Highway I suddenly hear hubby say oh oh. I turned back to see him with a flat tire. We just reached the south side of Golden Gate Park. Now what? We're several miles from home. My experience has been consistent with other reviews here. I dropped my bike off to get my brakes adjusted - replacing pads for disk brakes and turns out I needed a new rotor. I got a call a few hours later that my bike was ready. When I arrived I was handed a 170$ bill, the owner of the shop said the wheel took him 2hrs to remove. I rarely pay this much at my car mechanic for much more sophisticated and challenging work - I got swindled and I'm not going back even though this is my neighborhood shop. So much for supporting local businesses. To be fair the brakes the shop installed work well - as they should. Bummer. read more

This is one of those times when I wish Yelp could give fractions of stars, or in an even more perfect world, NO STARS AT ALL. I don't have the budget to purchase a bazillion-dollar Bianchi, nor do I currently own a spandex bodysuit to strut into a cafe after a long, tumultuous Sunday-morning ride. That doesn't give anyone a right to judge me on whether or not I deserve to shop around for a decent bicycle, much less walk into your super-snobby store and be ignored. My boyfriend and I walked in to this tiny Outer Richmond store thinking, "Well, it's not in the Mission or the Haight, so it must be somewhat modest and for the average Joe." WRONG. The DD Cycles storefront is about 200 square feet in area, and there were two employees and two customers there already, chit-chatting about tours and racing and bike jibber-jabber. After hearing us come in, all four of them turn towards us, GIVE US THE UP-AND-DOWN STARE, and then continue their conversations! I even step up to one employee, and he stares at me again and turns to continue talking to one of their douchebag customers about some bullshit NOT RELATED TO ANY KIND OF CUSTOMER SERVICE ISSUE AT ALL. After about 7 minutes of standing there waiting for them to decide to help me, I got my one question answered about my appropriate bike-frame size, they just stood there and waited for me to pretty much leave the shop. No recommendations, no "here's the next step" kind of tips. Just pure, arrogant bike-snob bullshit. A sixteenth of a damn star for actually having the balls to open up a bike shop in the Outer Richmond. Piss poor. Epilogue: I immediately went to Sports Basement and found Pete, who in my opinion is the ANTITHESIS of bike-snobbery. He was fantastic and helpful and modest and enthusiastic. You should have just been nice... My husband were in the vicinity and needed to get a 12" inner tube and a bike pump for our jogger stroller. Our navigator pointed us here. Anyway, so as I waited in the car with our sleeping baby, my husband ran in to get the parts. Check and check! Inventory great and prices were moderately fair. This guy had a lot of parts, or so my husband says. He did say when he got back, however, that the guy was so rude that he never wanted to go back. Hmm... Of course the jogger stroller is new, and we haven't quite figured it out yet. We jiggled and struggled until I gave in and went back in to the shop to ask the man for help. (keep in mind that we just went in five minutes before and spent $25 dollars in there) Long story short--he ripped the tire out of my hand (not being dramatic here), told me that my husband must be weak (ummm, while he too was struggling to get the tire around the rim), didn't even air up the tire, and laughed at me when I said "thank you." There are two types of Bike shops. One which sells ideas of what it is to "bike". Then there are shops which actually sell Bicycles. This is one of those places that sells bikes. The biggest difference between the two is that with the first, you get an overly-happy 19-year olds trying to sell you on the newest Potatium component on a bike you will never fully utilize. The second kind will curtly ask you what you want, then recommend what to do with the bike. Most often this does not even include a purchase. Mike (the owner) is awesome. Yes, most often the shop is filled with aged ex-racers who will spend 15 minutes arguing about the frame of some extinct bicycle frame before they ask you what you want. True, he is kinda deaf which requires much loud speaking and repeating, but when you get his attention keep it : you'll be rewarded. I can't tell you how many times I have gone into this shop expecting to buy something I thought I needed, and left with some free component or used part which more than solves my problem. I have also bought a brand new bicycle from here which was a great deal and which Mike modified for my needs before I left the shop. Yes, you could go to some larger shop which tries to sell you a new everything and go home with an inflated ego; or you can go to DD cycles and get what you really need. Cool little shop, I think. Guy that works there is pretty knowledgeable about bikes, I guess. However, I don't know for sure, because he wouldn't sell me a spoke wrench. Instead of just selling me the wrench he gave me a long explanation about how small the differences are between the sizes. And that it's really easy to strip the spoke nipple if you aren't careful. That I should figure out what brand/type of spoke I have in order to get the exact size wrench I need. Ok. Great. I've used spoke wrenches. You don't need to know what brand/type of spoke you're using, since the spoke wrench isn't actually used on the spoke, but rather the nipple. And you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out which spoke wrench you need. As a matter of fact you can get a 3-in-1 wrench which has the 3 most common sizes (which was all I was looking for). End of story...he wouldn't sell me a wrench until I went home, figured out what brand/type spokes I had on my wheels, and came back. I ended up going across the park to a much better bike shop and got what I needed. Sheesh. read more

It is with sadness that I need to knock my rating down from 5 stars to 4 stars. It's especially sad because DD cycles had been my only 5 star rating in San Francisco. Why the knockdown? Because, while the shop owner is extremely knowledgeable, he hasn't taken ownership of my recurring problem. My back tire tube kept popping, and when I asked why this keeps happening, he said "well it happens to all of us in this city, can't do much about it. All it takes is one good pothole hit." I go to another bike shop, and they tell me a different story. Suggest that I get a new tire with a higher pressure rating. More pressure = less chance to pop. Same thing DD told me, but DD didn't connect it to the problem I was having. The other bike shop also fixed my bike in 5 minutes, whereas DD cycle puts it into a queue to fix within several hours. I think it's natural if a customer comes in 2 or 3 times with same problem, you naturally get curious about how you can fix underlying problem. But that is not the case at DD. That said, I'm still grateful to DD for all the help and I still think it's a wonderful shop. I just now think all of the owner's knowledge may sometimes have led to learned helplessness or arrogance in certain areas. read more

After reading all the reviews I decided I would go in & check out my neighborhood bike shop, although hesitant at first as it seemed tiny and maybe only had super PRO Tour de France quality.. And after reading the bad reviews shopped around. But I kept coming back to this one..as soon as I walked in Mike was incredible sweet and helpful! Not a snob like others have stated but just really passionate about bikes and very knowledgable. He went over each and every bike and what each function would be explaining in detail in addition to pricing ! He didn't try to sell me the 10 thousand dollar bike because he knew I wasn't looking for that .. He listened to my needs and showed me the bikes that would work for me and discouraged others that would be a waste for me! Anyway - he had to email his supplier about the bike I was interested in and get back to me- he immediately responded the next day to let me know the bike was still available and at a discount price. If you are looking for a great quality bike with superior support service I recommend DDs shop if you just want a quick cheaper bike go else where- I support my local mom & pop shops and I support this review! I cannot give this place a worse review. I wanted to support this place because I like supporting local businesses, but I would encourage my neighbors to go elsewhere. Sorry for the long post but I want to walk you through this terrible experience. 1. I call because I want a toddler seat put on my bike. He seems hesitant and like it's an impossible ask. This should have been my first clue to go elsewhere. But he reluctantly agrees to let me drop off my bike. 2. I get there and he tells me it's impossible to install it on my bike without a custom rack which would be very expensive. I say "fine let's do it" and then he tells me it would be way too dangerous and wouldn't be safe for my toddler. When I ask questions, I am given a Russian Roulette analogy and basically made to feel like a horrible mother for even suggesting it. (Yikes?!? A toddler seat?!! What a horrible idea!) 3. He DOES however, agree to install a kickstand and "clean it up" for me. I explain that I will be on vacation and can pick it up on my return. I tell him the date and he agrees, but anything after that would be a $10/day storage fee. 4. I return from my trip and he has already left 2 messages on my voicemail that the bike is ready and if I leave it any longer it will be a "$10, uh I mean $15/day storage fee" 5. I pick it up, it's $148 for a kick stand and a tune up and he's a complete jerk the whole time. Several months later...I take my bike to Spoke Easy SF and they're pleasant, have the rack and the toddler seat installed in 48 hours and I literally have the most wonderful customer service I've had in SF. Shame on me for giving this guy a chance as I should have known better. I STRONGLY encourage you to drive the extra couple miles and go elsewhere. read more

I had been there several times and always got friendly and professional service at a reasonable price--much better than having some inexperienced kid work on your bike in a big store. I read all this bad stuff about Mike, but that he knew his stuff. Being that I'm looking for a bike shop to help me with my gear and not a new best friend, I thought I'd give this LBS a try. Walking in there, I was prepared to get some attitude in exchange for some good advice and professional installation of parts. Mike turned out to be the opposite of the negative stuff that people have said on here. Maybe I just got him on a good day (Saturday). Although he was with a customer and made no hurry to help me, when when he finally did get to me, he didn't rush me either. It's just a matter of waiting your turn. He took a lot of time to go over my needs to customize my ride and told me benefits and drawbacks of each modificaiton I was considering. My first experience with this place was this past Monday. I decided to walk from my apartment at Clement & 27th to DD's in search of a new tube for my single speed. I managed to make it alll the way there, only to find that the place is closed on Mondays. "Well, f' me!" I stood outside for a minute, hemming and hawwing, and to my surprise the door to the shop opened! Moments later the nice guy inside handed me a new tube. Unfortunately, the credit card machine was not on (considering they were technically closed) and dummy me had brought no cash! Thankfully and graciously I was told to come back the next day to pay the $7.60. That really made my day, and now I am a loyal customer! So glad I found *my* bike shop! A little pricey ($7.60 for a tube) but worth the customer service, location, and expertise. Spent about 20 minutes chatting about bikes, locks, and biking in SF. I was even told to come back so that we could make a map full of good bike routes! Lots of neat, good lookin' bikes inside. Looking forward to going back to admire them! read more

I just got an 1990s jamis coda to beat around the city and was looking to lube the drivetrain and buy a tube in case of a flat. I live on 35th and balboa and this place just happened to be close to me. When I walked in I simply asked the friendly man at the counter that I wanted lube and a tube (see that I rhymed). He took a look at my bike and let me know what size tube i needed for my steel rimmed jamis, he also instructed me on how to use the lube to clean out my chains. I purchased the items without difficulty. I went home to attach my new bike lock, clean my chains, and adjust my seat. Like the dumb monkey I am I broke the seat post bolt and felt sol. I shamefully walked my jamis back to dd and the owner helped identify the correct bolt to fix the problem, and took a look at my seat post and attempted to fix the problem right there. It turns out I had to bang out the old bolt and install a new bolt. The man did not even ask me for money I had to ask him how much I owed him for the new bolt! Not necessarily silver spoon service but no condescending attitude and general helpfulness go a long way in my book. Other than taking advantage of deep discounts at Sports Basement or the other chain stores, I'll be coming to DD for the maintenance of my bike. read more

Well let's just say I was dreading going in this place. I HATE walking into some sort of shop and they want to talk down to you or charge you ridiculously because you don't appear knowledgeable about the subject. I recently acquired a second-hand, lets face it, shitty bike. But it was free and it goes, so mine it was. I brought it here to DD to have the tire replaced. There was a large man behind the counter... oh no. Oh yes. He told me I did NOT need a new tire, but a new inner tube. He put it on for me. I asked if he could adjust the seat for me because I didn't have the tools, and he did, quite professionally. I asked him what kind of bike I had, and he said without attitude that it was most likely bought at Costco. He told me to be careful not to ride the bike in bad conditions because of the brakes. Sure I didn't actually buy a bike from here, but shit, for what I needed, they could not have been better. Feel like I was ripped off here. I came to fix my bike rack which had a screw stuck inside. The owner, first of all,was a bit condescending. That part I can deal with but he charged me $38 to mount the rack. After I left my bike to be fixed for this overpriced number, he called back and said it would cost $50 due to complications. I'm sorry, but it should not cost $50 to fix a bike rack. Very overpriced. Wouldn't recommend this place unless you want to be nickel and dimed. read more
