This bike shop is not for whiners. This guy knows his stuff, and yes he is opinionated. I appreciate it when someone has a strong opinion. I also don't mind if he takes his time telling stories with his buddies. It is called atmosphere and personality. If you want to go to a store where someone will sell you whatever bike you want (or think you want) even if it is not right for you, then go to one of the chain stores or more well known SF shops. However if you want to talk about how bikes are constructed, why this geometry is better for that application, the history of bike brands sold in the Bay Area over the last 40 years, and someone who will tell you what they honestly think of your choice of bike ... then DD is the place. I don't go to DD for customer service, I go for a customer experience. I always get good advice, and some really interesting facts. It's like the difference between a musty old bookstore and Barnes & Noble. They serve two completely different needs. I came in with a busted old mountain bike that was badly in need of a tune-up as well as had pieces missing from recently being shipped across country. The guy fixed it up and had it ready to go in just a couple of hours. He even took the liberty to change some things I didn't realize were in such bad shape (shot tires, broken gears...this thing is pretty ancient) and the price was much less than what I was expecting. Despite what some of the negative reviews say about the place being a bit snooty for hardcore cyclists only, I didn't find that the case at all. I found him to be extremely friendly and helpful despite my obvious ignorance of bicycle mechanics (had him explain what all the pieces he fixed were) and he also gave me a few tips on how to use the gears and adjust my seat to my height. read more

I went in last week to get a new inner tube and bike tune up but I didnt know they were closed on mondays. so i got all the way there and found that out. I stumbled across this place a couple of weeks back while house sitting for my GF's parents. I wanted to take advantage of the fact that there are some really cool bike trails around that area so we ended up bringing our bikes along. Realized that my rims have been kinda out of whack and went to this shop for truing of my rims. I left my bike at the shop and was told around an hour or two due to the work cue. Mike is a great guy. He seems like an honest down to earth businessman. He's not the hustler who will push something just for a profit. I've been taking my bikes (mostly BMX) there for the last 4 or so years when I got back into cycling. He gets 5 stars overall. If you ever catch Mike on a slow day, bs with him. He's a genius when it comes to bikes. He knows everything about them. I do find it funny that people actually complain about the employees who suck here. Simply put, Mike is a master mechanic. He's done two full bike builds for me incorporating both a knowledge of modern-era tech and old-school steel/classic bikes. He's also super helpful whenever I come in for maintenance check-ups or to address various modifications on my bikes. On multiple occasions, Mike has been able to identify and resolve problems that would not otherwise be detected by a big-brand store mechanic. I also appreciate that he doesn't price gouge and always calculates cost using fair/realistic labor increments. One look in his shop and you can see that he deals with everything from high-end Somec custom carbon w/Campy EPS builds, to old steel gravel grinders and classic bikes. I also find that Mike can discuss any era of cycling and is aware of exactly what was, and is, currently on the market. Build #1 I now have well over 1000 miles on my steel LeMond bike that Mike built for me earlier this year. This is a frame from the late 80's/early 90's (coincidentally painted by D&D Cycles of San Lorenzo, CA - separate review on that here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/d-and-d-cycles-san-lorenzo) which required several modifications to function with a modern Shimano 105 10-spd groupset. Mike gave me a full consultation so that I could plan the build around this frame. He respaced the rear triangle to accommodate a 10 spd hub, milled the front fork bolt area so that it could be recessed, re-threaded the bottom bracket, and gave me the parameters for searching for a new headset that would work with the fork that had a steerer tube cut too short. All of this came together with a threadless stem and modern 700c wheelset with long-reach brake calipers. Mike had this build done in less than a week, and worked with me over a few follow-up visits to dial in my fit and make shifting and braking adjustments. After giving Mike some rough numbers pertaining to my fit, he was able to eyeball my hip and shoulder angles and get me into a comfortable position so that I could later make micro-adjustments later on. When I went to my fit specialist to double check my position, he told me that no further adjustments were needed and that "the mechanic got it spot on", which was awesome and saved me $150. Mike also identified that my custom wheels had not been properly dished and made the necessary corrections. I came in one day looking for locks for our bikes. The shop is around 400 sq feet i believe...my questions about the onguard locks were answered quite well and I even bought a pump from them. I ended up coming back later that night to do an exchange because I decided to get a smaller lock instead and also brought my pump in and the owner i believe let me exchange to pump to one with a guage and I just had to pay the difference. It seems like this is the only bike shop in outer richmond I may be wrong, but it seemsl ike a pretty good shop. So grateful to have this shop in my neighborhood. I am very new to the bicycle scene and Mike made me very comfortable and answered every question I had before buying a bike. I visited several other shops in the area but settled on a KHS at Mike's recommendation that I have been absolutely thrilled with. I almost didn't go to this place based on the other reviews on Yelp, but I am SO GLAD that I did. The other reviews made it seem like if you were not a world-class cyclist, you would get almost no help and be basically ignored. I had the exact opposite experience. I brought in an old bike that was in pieces, and hadn't been used in years...and it was very obvious from the moment I walked in that I am a casual cyclist at best. The staff was incredibly helpful and thorough in talking over the bike with me, and were really friendly. I still remember the experience and outstanding service after 20+years... I think the shop was called 'Balboa Cyclery' in these days!? Is that possible? Back in 1995 - during the last days of our vacation in SF - I more or less found this little shop by accident while heading for someone who could do some custom-made 24" BMX-Cruiser wheels for me. Being in the shop they the hubs and rims but not the proper spokes. He calculated the spokes length and ordered stainless- steel ones from another shop where I picked them up a little later and returned them. The guy in the shop told me, he will mount everything and I should come back the next day. And - believe it or not - the wheels were ready for pickup. I still own the Cruiser and I still have these wheels on it! Both thumbs up! read more

DD Cycles is more of a hangout than business for the owner Mike, he really knows his stuff but I think most of the time he is too distracted by "hanging out" to run his business well. With DD Cycles we are trading funky other Richmond bike shop atmosphere for service. When Mike is talking about something, aside from what you would be paying him for, he is animated and engaged, ask mike about when you could pick something up or some other shop business and its like and it's like you're asking him to schedule a root canal. Repairs have not been ready when promised, and sometimes not repaired at all, and it seems he sort of makes the pricing up as he goes. Bottom line is that Mike is a nice guy and will do a quick repair or hand out all the advice you need for free (most other shops charge just to look at your bike) but the rest is all hit or miss. If you complain he will make it right, and if you hang out or get him talking that fun too but if need it done right the first time on time...... read more

This is a great bike shop: Honest, prompt, reliable repairs-with a history story behind every repair/product.. I tired of the Sports Basement (repairs not ready when promised; return for repair not done right/didn't last)) and a local shop out in SW corner of SF (not necessarily high quality accessories/components; repair/replacement that other bike shop said not necessary). I have now brought 2 road bikes in for upgrades/tune-ups/repairs. I gave Mike free license to replace components based upon safety considerations for my daughter's Marin Bicycles road bike, and he said not necessary but he did make all necessary adjustments and improvements on time and for a reasonable price.. On my Viner road bike, since I was blowing through stop signs coming off of San Bruno Mountain when the rims got damp from fog, he upgraded my brakes. Prompt, reliable, road tested repairs (he rode my bile up and down the hills to make sure all was OK) done the right way. And Mike is an artiste when it come to the aesthetics of the repairs, too. This place is right by my house and I have an old Schwinn Corvette with a 3 speed transmission inside the back wheel hub. If it sounds complicated and time consuming to fix, that's cuz it is. I certainly wasn't gonna spend a weekend doing it. He could have charged me 100's of dollars. Instead, he said lets hit it with some tri flow and then turned a screw on the cable a few times, added more oil, turned the screw some more and fixed it on the spot. He didn't charge me for any of the work and then when I only had 2 bucks for the inner tube I bought, decided that was a good enough price. To me - that is an awesome local bike shop that is not going to try and rip you off on repairs you don't need. read more

Mike is definitely the homie...He's really a nice guy and even I was hesitant to walk into there because of the reviews I read. I decided to swallow my fear and head in....the dude is super nice as long as you're not a dickhead to him. He's super knowledgeable and a huge track cycling enthusiast. His repair rates are definitely reasonable and this is the ONLY place I get my bike serviced at. Even when I need my bike serviced on Sunday or Monday (when he's closed), I wait until Tuesday to get it fixed. Part of the reason is, I live 9 blocks away, but 98% of the reason I come back is because he definitely knows what he's doing and it has one of those real authentic "i'm in a bike shop" feel. Very good place. All the parts you need, run by a real bike wizard. All those crappy reviews come from snotty bike dilettantes who are easily offended. If bikes are part of your life, then you know the place is good once you get your cycle fixed for the first time. My experience here was great. I found this tiny shop on advice from a friend. Brought in my well loved old road bike that had survived both a horrid crash and an amateurish repair/tune up attempt at a Mission bike shop. The shop is small and packed with cool vintage bikes, wooden rims, track frames and assorted bits and parts. I needed a knowledgeable, skilled mechanic and that's what I found. Mike took the time to educate me, gave a quick estimate, and called me two days later to say that all the work was complete. When I arrived to pick up my bike there were two other folks in the shop. The owner politely finished with them, and then took time to go over all the work. In fairness the work done would have been around 100.00 down town, he charged me less than half of that. If you want a skilled mechanic who knows his stuff, a load of cool stuff crammed into a tiny space to drool over, and great work, patronize this shop. If you want to be defered to because you have cash in your pocket and hang with the my-trustfund-bought-a-cool-fixie hipster crowd then go elsewhere. read more

I took my now antique Diamondback Apex in to get a replacement shifter. Of course they don't make the ones I have anymore. DD cycles suggested the low cost option would be to switch to a grip shifter. It was done when he said it would be done, the price was reasonable, and it works. What more can you ask? read more
