I had a great experience at Box Dog Bikes. I brought in my bike had the tip of the handlebar twisted, and they fixed it quickly and efficiently. The staff was incredibly friendly, professional, and helpful throughout the whole process. Their service was fast, honest. They got my bike back in perfect working condition in no time. I highly recommend Box Dog Bikes to anyone looking for knowledgeable mechanics and excellent customer service. read more

Been here 3 times. Love this place- small, local. Great at bike repairs, good price and has the best integrity- feels very honest, not going for unwarranted upsells, great customer service and overall vibes read more

There is nothing you can improve here! I went there for the good review but this is a hipster owned place for hipsters and techies with money! And not hospitable either as well as argumentative!! Not for the commoners... And they made me pay $10 for the quote FYI read more

Excellent customer service. Needed a new tire after a bike ride in GG Park ended in a rear flat tire. On the long walk home, I googled "bike shop" and luckily Box Dog was the nearest shop to my house. They offered to repair the flat and replace the worn tire with a better product. The shop is clean and well-lit, the bike techs are friendly and not condescending like other bike shop employees in nearby bike shops. Prices were very fair. This is my new favorite bike shop. Highly recommend and will return when I need to replace the front tire. *Support local small businesses* read more

I needed help with a rear touring wheel, and was assured they were wheel building greats. Two weeks, and 80.00 dollars later, all I got was a slip of paper with a sentence about spoke length, and a wheel had not been touched. Cleanly they're bragging about wheel building is all crap, but it took an extra set of nerves to charge me for doing nothing. I would go to them for common repairs, but if your bike wasn't manufactured the millions, this is not your shop. Tom read more

I went in to have my kids back tire repaired. We were in and out quite quickly, and they even did a little check over of the bike and wiped it down. read more

Took my bike into Box Dog Bikes after it started making a weird noise while pedaling, and I'm so glad I did. The staff was super lovely, genuine, welcoming, and just good people all around. The shop has a homey, no-stress vibe that instantly puts you at ease. They fixed the issue right on time and even flagged a few other minor things that I'll want to take care of down the line, no pressure. It felt like they really cared about helping, not upselling. Highly recommend! read more

My chain snapped while riding on Valencia and a friendly shopkeeper told me about this place 1 block away. Calvin helped me and was great. Gave me options to repair or replace, did it on the spot, tightened some loose bolts & relayed to me some concerns that I should address in the future, all of which were conveniently noted on my receipt for future reference. All done from start to finish in less than 20 mins, and what I would consider fairly priced, all of which made my day. I already have a local bike shop beside my house that I use, but may come over here again in the future because the experience was that good. If they are in your neighborhood check them out! read more

Our child could zoom around on a balance bike but avoided his pedal bike like it was radioactive for over a year. We brought the bike in to have the coaster brake removed and swapped in a freewheel. He took off like a rocket! Now he won't get off his bike and even wanted to sleep with it! Despite being incredibly busy, they took the time to answer all our questions and help us tweak our child's bike really fast. Thank you SOOOOOOO much for making his day--and ours! read more

These guys are kind, easy to work with, and fair. I've used them for who knows how many years now and am moved today to write review. (I don't usually review things out of laziness.) They explain things patiently, and don't have an attitude. Shout out in particular to Geoff, with whom I've ended up having a majority of my conversations with. It's wonderful to be able to trust service providers and shops. A great asset to the Mission; will keep coming back for years to come. read more

Superb. Got a full tune up + installed recommended brand new handle bars few months ago and I'd gotta say, this 90s classic rides like a dream. Box Dog has become my go-to shop even though it isn't in my neighborhood. The team is always so professional and thorough, and I love the fact that quality of work is cross-checked by a teammate before bike is completed for return to owner. My experience with other bike shops has been the 'lone wolf' good mechanic where once that person leaves, I get stuck hunting for another shop. Here, my relationship has been developed across the team, allowing me comfort that I'll always be taken care of, regardless of who is on vacation, etc. Top notch work and a pleasant team! read more

I am a wheelchair user with an adaptive bike. When other bike shops have declined to assist me, Box Dog Bikes staff welcomed me and are excited by the challenge. It's great to find employees who rise to the challenge with inclusion and I'm incredibly impressed with the professionalism and kindness of these people. Even with a high volume of orders to manage right now, they stopped to assist me fill my tire up with air because I am unable to do so. I will be continuing to use them for ordering parts and service. I strongly encourage anyone reading this to help support this neighborhood small business because their work ethic and customer support is exceeds every other bike shop that I've come across! read more

Fast, quality, affordable, and friendly. What else can you expect from a bike shop? Yelp is saying this review is too short so I'm going to fill the rest of this review with nonsense. Blah blah blah. read more

I have been taking my bike to Box Dog for light service for the last few years and decided it was time to get a comprehensive once-over done - my Giant was making some weird noises, and I had never had a serious service other than minor adjustments in the seven years I'd owned the bike. The owners/mechanics at Box Dog went above and beyond to (effectively) diagnose the noise, give me multiple options for many major and minor issues with the bike, and communicated frequently and effectively with me about the service from beginning to end. At the end of the day, my receipt included a full essay's worth of documentation from each mechanic that had worked on the bike, rigorously cataloguing each issue, the potential solutions, and their communications with me. The professionalism, resourcefulness, and communication from their team makes me comfortable paying the slight premium Box Dog charges over other local shops' rates. I just trust that they have the expertise to get non-standard repairs right the first time. Plus, it's collectively owned, which is great. Thanks, guys! read more

Great local bike shop, coop owned by the team that works there. Take your bike here! I brought in my '80's road bike initially because my headset kept coming loose, after it was serviced at a different shop. I told the folks at Box Dog to fix everything on it so it's safe to ride and all tuned up. They did a fantastic job with everything. I'm glad I brought my bike here because now my bike rides beautifully. read more

Really great experience here, I've been to a few different bike shops throughout the city, but I like this one the best so far. They were really nice despite me making it clear I was a novice when it came to problems with my older bike- which is very rarely the case. They also charged me a super reasonable price, which I was shocked by as I have been charged way more for similar tune ups. Even if it's a little farther away than your local bike shop, I would still recommend going to these guys first. Also worth mentioning: Paul was really nice over the phone when I called with questions before visiting! read more

The overall customer experience has become really weak. We've used them as our neighborhood go-to shop for about three years now, but unfortunately a pattern has developed of missed promised-by dates, incomplete work, poor communication between their own staff and with us, and unfriendly demeanor. But the worst of all has been going through all that and then discovering they didn't do something that was requested (main reason I brought the bike in was for a new chain, they forgot about the chain), or they left work unfinished or lied about what they did (it's obvious you didn't do a test ride as you claimed if I walk my bike out the door of your shop and immediately notice the break cables aren't attached and the new tube isn't inflated). I feel like maybe they shouldn't boast so much about being a worker-owned business, because it seems like there's no adult in charge to kind of get it together. read more

These guys were nice, extraordinarily helpful, and they seemed to give me a good deal, although I have no real frame of reference. I'm a noob to biking these days. Great staff. Very mindful of COVID precautions. I don't think there is a bike they can't fix and get you rolling again. Totally reasonable pricing and very friendly. They do sell some new bikes but it seems like their main line of business is really fixing your bike if you have a problem with it or want to upgrade parts etc... One of my favorite bike shops in SF, and that is saying a lot in a town with a million bike shops. read more

Nice and helpful to this non-bike expert. My bike had been sitting uncovered in someone's backyard for more than two years, and it was only something like ~$75 to fix up, including needed to replace parts. They walked me through the necessary and suggested fixes in clear terms, along with cost, prior to starting work. I even ok'ed them to do whatever they thought was necessary up to $115. read more

Super friendly and knowledgeable staff. got my bike checked out and fixed in a timely manner.

It's hard to forget kindness but I forgot how legitimately nice the people here are. I recently picked up a set of tires and some grips here. It's been years since I darkened their doors and while they might not know me by name anymore they're just as wonderful as always. I recently picked up cycling again and my poor bike reflected a few years of neglect. There's never any judgment here, though. Prices are reasonable and their selection of quality parts is excellent. I've seen the space get rearranged a few times over the years but love how it looks right now. It's easy to see what all is available and their space feels open and full of light. They understand the needs of the cycling commuter and seem to serve the randonneuring community really well. They have a wonderful assortment of cycling specific maps as well. I still love Box Dog and it feels like they love me, too. :) Cootz OUT! ({}) read more

They are a Kona reseller, so don't come here expecting to buy a bike that's not Kona or any of the other small brands they sell. Compared to other stores, even their Kona bikes are insanely marked up. I saw the same model at a nearby bike store for $650 which BDB was selling for $1000. Store personnel exude a sense of elitism as well. Clerk told me that I was wasting money if I didn't spend at least a $1000 on a bike. What a joke of a store. read more

So I am a pretty serious cyclist (commuting + touring), as well as a huge snob about bike mechanics -- but I am also a very femme-y lady, and I get talked down to surprisingly often. However, everyone at Box Dog has always been friendly to me. That alone would make me a loyal customer, but they also do truly great work! Box Dog Bikes makes me want to pop a wheelie! I found my bicycle at a rather shady dealership, and the owner pulled it out of a shop where the rides were piled ten deep, like some graveyard for two wheelers. How this little gem survived the trauma, I'll never know. She's a lavendar Motobécane with Schwinn handlebars, a decrepit seat and nondescript pedals. She may be pieced together, but she's got that 1970s look, baby. Needless to say, it needed a tune up. I took it to Box Dog Bikes because bike-worshippers recommend it for its fair prices. Plus, co-ops are a good thing, right? I took it in, and despite the bikes for sale there being so expensive and blingy, they took one look at my poor bike and its grinding gears and saw the disco in her. After a week or so of working on it, my bike and I were reunited. I shelled out the $65, and asked what they had done to fix 'er up, but the guy was pretty vague. No matter -- we're back together, the brakes are solid and the gears are smooth. She really cranks my chain! read more

Fixie douchebags I can put up with, fixie douchebags who insult my choice of ride I cannot. Here is WTF #1: ME (looking at "menu"): It needs a 'regular tune up' DUDE BRO: How many gears? ME: Single speed DUDE BRO: That's not even a 'regular tune up' that's less than a 'regular tune up.' It'll take, like, ten minutes. ME: Ok, sure, well it needs some oil and tightened stuff. Whatever you need to call it. DUDE BRO: Sure, leave it here. ME: Cool, when should I pick it up? DUDE BRO: It'll be done next Wednesday. (mind you, there was one bike in the back being worked on while two racks stood empty and three other dude bro's stood around in jeans that were way to tight) ME: Huh? You said it would take 10 minutes. DUDE BRO: Well we don't have slot open until next Wednesday. ME: Ok. Well I can't leave it that long. DUDE BRO: Ok bring it in next wednesday morning. Here is WTF #2: I love my bike, I ride it every day. It is 30 years old (as am I) and yes, it has a banana seat. I don't expect everyone to appreciate the "I'm 30 and ride a bicycle with a banana seat aesthetic" but I don't really care. It's a good bike, a sturdy bike, and a lot of people think it's cute, if slightly juvenile. At least I can have a sense of humor about it. Anyway, being 30 years old and in daily use, it needed a tune up. Yes, this is something I could do myself, in fact, I've taken it apart and put it back together more than once, but it's not my favorite thing to do, so I am happy to pay a few buck to get someone else to do it. So I did bring it in Wednesday morning, and picked it up wednesday evening. It sounded like it had been oiled but the chain hadn't been cleaned and some really basic stuff hadn't been tightened. It seemed like they basically squirted some oil on it. The receipt, along with the overpriced total, said "as safe as a 30 year old bike can get" WTF?!!?? Have they started installing airbags in bicycles since 1978? Seriously? This place should be called Box Douche Bikes. read more

Wow. Come here if you want to talk to super pretentious employees that do not know what it means to deliver satisfactory customer service. First, they order a part from a supplier and don't bother contacting us after knowing that the product was back ordered. After 4 weeks of waiting we go in to pick up the part and asked them to install it on the bike. They said they would be closing in 15 minutes and tell us to come back another day. We tell them we already waited so many weeks to get the part and the pretentious hipster man helping us told us since we waited so long already, what's a few more days of waiting. Seriously? Never coming back here again. read more

Box Dog Bikes was the first shop Sir Nicholas and I stopped at on our day of bike hunting. And while ultimately we didn't get a bike from here it wasn't because they were unfriendly or didn't have a good selection. They simply didn't have exactly the kind of bike either of us was looking for. However, if you are on the hunt for a street or road bike I would definitely recommend checking our Box Dog. The people there are super friendly and knowledgeable and totally willing to help you figure out the best bike for your budget. They also have a really cool self tune-up area so if you also need to just make some minor adjustments on your bike you can swing on by and borrow those tools. That's pretty rad of them I have to say. read more

Consumer warning: this shop was dishonest, inept and nearly ripped me off. This is not the right place to go to get maintenance done on an older bike, or to go if you are a cycling maintenance novice. There are plenty of options in the city, avoid this one. To summarize my experience: I took an older mountain bike that I was fond of, which had fallen into disrepair, and asked this shop's opinion on what it would take to get it running like a champ. They suggested a full tune up and the replacement of some gear, totaling roughly $285. Being fond of the bike I went for it, but my girlfriend was skeptical that the bike could be revived. We went it and asked more specific questions, and I was told they could "100% guarantee" that it would be fit to hit the trails when they were done. Fast forward 4 days, I was called in to the shop, told they had screwed up on the assessment, they had pulled my year old sealed bottom bracket and messed it up, and they tried to return the bike to me in pieces! In the end, they didn't charge me, but they were dishonest, used-car-salesman-like, inept in their assessment and work, and I don't believe they would have backed off of their "100% guarantee " nonsense if there had been a way for them to hide their sub-par work. read more

I want to like box dog but I can't. They are overpriced, and they take the S out of service. One of the guys actually warned me against stealing a light (I am 35, not 12 and don't do that) because i asked him to throw the box away. And I had the receipt next to it. Never mind that I am not a theif. Way to build loyality dumbass! I rode 5 miles to make it to the store by 7:30 because I called them and checked. When I got there at 7:05, they pointed at a closed sign with 7 people still inside. We had just spent 800 dollars in the store the day before. GO ANYWHERE ELSE! Charge too much. I had an estimate to get repairs done on my bike, and then when I picked my bike up, they demanded more; said that more work had been done. I got a dereailluer, the part the derailleur hangs from, a chain, cogset, gears for the back, etc. I paid about $500. I noticed a few gears skipping right away. I brought it back, and they told me that I needed a new wheel and more, and that would cost another $200 or so. The skipping problem got worse, and I came back in two more times over the course of about a year. Once, the woman adjusted something, but both times, they'd looked at their computer at my record, and both times told me to buy a wheel. I eventually went to performance bike and found a wheel and got it put on. But the problem of skipping continued. The worker there identified that two chain links were stuck and that this was contributing to the problem. Box Dog Bikes sold me a chain that had always given problems. I took the bike back to box dog bikes and they agreed to replace the chain if I paid for it. They also had me buy a front sprocket, as it was worn off. After they replaced the chain, the bicycle worked fine -- no skipping in any gears. But I had to pay twice for a chain. It was not a good deal for me, and it has always bothered me. read more

Fuck this place. I paid $150 so that they could make my bike run shittier than it already did. Yeah, you read that right. The first time I took it in they broke it down, making it completely unridable. Whatever, it happens, so I took it back for them to fix it up. Within a couple weeks it starts acting up, so I take it in and the dude tweaks a couple things, but still doesn't really fix it. "It's not that bad," he said, giving it back to me... with this tone that says "you're being a big baby." Guess what asshole? You don't pay people money to kinda-sorta fix your bike up. This is straight up shoddy workmanship here, ignore this place and patronize the numerous decent bike shops nearby. read more

I know this place has gotten a lot of "good" reviews, but my experience was less than ideal. A total waste of time. 1) I brought my bike in, need a new back wheel 2) Hipster behind the counter doesn't REALLY want to listen to me (puuuuhhhleeese lose the "tude" dude) even though I had my bike WITH ME 3) Mr. TUDE gives me a wheel which ends up not fitting (I spend 3 hours putting it on before I figure it out it won't work) 4) I bring the wheel BACK to the store, hipster not working. Another dude apologizes, says "we should have never given you that wheel." Ok fine. Exchange wheel. 5) New dude forgets to give me back an integral part of the wheel and they are closed on Tuesdays. 6) Go to ghetto Don Pablo's on 16th st & buy the missing part. 6.5) Box dawg DUMPARAMA. I will never come to your store. Hello, good BYE. read more

Simply put, if you know your way around a bicycle and know exactly what you want, box dog is a great resource of cheap used parts to keep your bar bike running. If you need advice or help shopping for a bike, this may not be the best choice. I purchased a freewheel single speed hybrid conversion here for a shocking one hundred dollars. It was easily the ugliest bike in the store but for around 20$ (spray paint and new bars) that was easily amended. Since then I've been happy with the bike I bought, except for one complaint: the chainring was fastened to the cranks with incorrectly sized bolts (using washers to take up the slack), resulting in a very sloppy chainring. Combined with an uneven chainline, I have had numerous chain problems. I'm not really upset about these things - you get what you pay for. Just be aware that the bikes here *are* made of salvaged parts and if you're going to buy one, try to take a bike savvy friend with you to help size up the selection.
