I needed help with a rear touring wheel, and was assured they were wheel building greats. Two weeks, and 80.00 dollars later, all I got was a slip of paper with a sentence about spoke length, and a wheel had not been touched. Cleanly they're bragging about wheel building is all crap, but it took an extra set of nerves to charge me for doing nothing. Excellent customer service. Needed a new tire after a bike ride in GG Park ended in a rear flat tire. On the long walk home, I googled "bike shop" and luckily Box Dog was the nearest shop to my house. They offered to repair the flat and replace the worn tire with a better product. The shop is clean and well-lit, the bike techs are friendly and not condescending like other bike shop employees in nearby bike shops. Prices were very fair. This is my new favorite bike shop. My chain snapped while riding on Valencia and a friendly shopkeeper told me about this place 1 block away. Calvin helped me and was great. Gave me options to repair or replace, did it on the spot, tightened some loose bolts & relayed to me some concerns that I should address in the future, all of which were conveniently noted on my receipt for future reference. All done from start to finish in less than 20 mins, and what I would consider fairly priced, all of which made my day. Our child could zoom around on a balance bike but avoided his pedal bike like it was radioactive for over a year. We brought the bike in to have the coaster brake removed and swapped in a freewheel. He took off like a rocket! Now he won't get off his bike and even wanted to sleep with it! I have been taking my bike to Box Dog for light service for the last few years and decided it was time to get a comprehensive once-over done - my Giant was making some weird noises, and I had never had a serious service other than minor adjustments in the seven years I'd owned the bike. The owners/mechanics at Box Dog went above and beyond to (effectively) diagnose the noise, give me multiple options for many major and minor issues with the bike, and communicated frequently and effectively with me about the service from beginning to end. At the end of the day, my receipt included a full essay's worth of documentation from each mechanic that had worked on the bike, rigorously cataloguing each issue, the potential solutions, and their communications with me. The professionalism, resourcefulness, and communication from their team makes me comfortable paying the slight premium Box Dog charges over other local shops' rates. Really great experience here, I've been to a few different bike shops throughout the city, but I like this one the best so far. They were really nice despite me making it clear I was a novice when it came to problems with my older bike- which is very rarely the case. They also charged me a super reasonable price, which I was shocked by as I have been charged way more for similar tune ups. Even if it's a little farther away than your local bike shop, I would still recommend going to these guys first. Also worth mentioning: Paul was really nice over the phone when I called with questions before visiting! read more

The overall customer experience has become really weak. We've used them as our neighborhood go-to shop for about three years now, but unfortunately a pattern has developed of missed promised-by dates, incomplete work, poor communication between their own staff and with us, and unfriendly demeanor. But the worst of all has been going through all that and then discovering they didn't do something that was requested (main reason I brought the bike in was for a new chain, they forgot about the chain), or they left work unfinished or lied about what they did (it's obvious you didn't do a test ride as you claimed if I walk my bike out the door of your shop and immediately notice the break cables aren't attached and the new tube isn't inflated). I feel like maybe they shouldn't boast so much about being a worker-owned business, because it seems like there's no adult in charge to kind of get it together. read more

My bike had been sitting uncovered in someone's backyard for more than two years, and it was only something like ~$75 to fix up, including needed to replace parts. It's hard to forget kindness but I forgot how legitimately nice the people here are. I recently picked up a set of tires and some grips here. It's been years since I darkened their doors and while they might not know me by name anymore they're just as wonderful as always. I recently picked up cycling again and my poor bike reflected a few years of neglect. There's never any judgment here, though. Prices are reasonable and their selection of quality parts is excellent. I've seen the space get rearranged a few times over the years but love how it looks right now. It's easy to see what all is available and their space feels open and full of light. They understand the needs of the cycling commuter and seem to serve the randonneuring community really well. They have a wonderful assortment of cycling specific maps as well. They are a Kona reseller, so don't come here expecting to buy a bike that's not Kona or any of the other small brands they sell. Compared to other stores, even their Kona bikes are insanely marked up. I saw the same model at a nearby bike store for $650 which BDB was selling for $1000. Store personnel exude a sense of elitism as well. Clerk told me that I was wasting money if I didn't spend at least a $1000 on a bike. What a joke of a store. read more

great shop, amazing employees! BDB organizes group bike camping trips to many of the locations you have visited in the bay area but just didnt know you could camp there. We have been to Briones, Coyote Hills, others, and most recently we went to Chabot, two rocks group camping site. BDB takes great care in fostering a community that both benefits the types of services they provide as well as bringing together like minded individuals. Every trip i have been on has been a great route to get there, accessible by many types of riders; the bike shop really does a great job of creating inclusivity and empowering shy riders to speak up and learn more. Truth be told I have never been to the bike shop nor had them work on anything of mine; however, having met all the employees and hung out with them, I am fully confidant in everything they would do should I use them ever. Box Dog Bikes makes me want to pop a wheelie! I found my bicycle at a rather shady dealership, and the owner pulled it out of a shop where the rides were piled ten deep, like some graveyard for two wheelers. How this little gem survived the trauma, I'll never know. She's a lavendar Motobécane with Schwinn handlebars, a decrepit seat and nondescript pedals. She may be pieced together, but she's got that 1970s look, baby. Needless to say, it needed a tune up. I took it to Box Dog Bikes because bike-worshippers recommend it for its fair prices. Plus, co-ops are a good thing, right? I took it in, and despite the bikes for sale there being so expensive and blingy, they took one look at my poor bike and its grinding gears and saw the disco in her. After a week or so of working on it, my bike and I were reunited. I shelled out the $65, and asked what they had done to fix 'er up, but the guy was pretty vague. No matter -- we're back together, the brakes are solid and the gears are smooth. She really cranks my chain! read more

ME: Single speed DUDE BRO: That's not even a 'regular tune up' that's less than a 'regular tune up.' It'll take, like, ten minutes. ME: Ok, sure, well it needs some oil and tightened stuff. Whatever you need to call it. DUDE BRO: Sure, leave it here. ME: Cool, when should I pick it up? DUDE BRO: It'll be done next Wednesday. (mind you, there was one bike in the back being worked on while two racks stood empty and three other dude bro's stood around in jeans that were way to tight) ME: Huh? You said it would take 10 minutes. DUDE BRO: Well we don't have slot open until next Wednesday. ME: Ok. Well I can't leave it that long. DUDE BRO: Ok bring it in next wednesday morning. Here is WTF #2: I love my bike, I ride it every day. It is 30 years old (as am I) and yes, it has a banana seat. I don't expect everyone to appreciate the "I'm 30 and ride a bicycle with a banana seat aesthetic" but I don't really care. It's a good bike, a sturdy bike, and a lot of people think it's cute, if slightly juvenile. At least I can have a sense of humor about it. Anyway, being 30 years old and in daily use, it needed a tune up. Yes, this is something I could do myself, in fact, I've taken it apart and put it back together more than once, but it's not my favorite thing to do, so I am happy to pay a few buck to get someone else to do it. So I did bring it in Wednesday morning, and picked it up wednesday evening. It sounded like it had been oiled but the chain hadn't been cleaned and some really basic stuff hadn't been tightened. It seemed like they basically squirted some oil on it. The receipt, along with the overpriced total, said "as safe as a 30 year old bike can get" WTF?!!?? Have they started installing airbags in bicycles since 1978? Seriously? This place should be called Box Douche Bikes. read more

First, they order a part from a supplier and don't bother contacting us after knowing that the product was back ordered. After 4 weeks of waiting we go in to pick up the part and asked them to install it on the bike. They said they would be closing in 15 minutes and tell us to come back another day. We tell them we already waited so many weeks to get the part and the pretentious hipster man helping us told us since we waited so long already, what's a few more days of waiting. Seriously? And while ultimately we didn't get a bike from here it wasn't because they were unfriendly or didn't have a good selection. They simply didn't have exactly the kind of bike either of us was looking for. However, if you are on the hunt for a street or road bike I would definitely recommend checking our Box Dog. The people there are super friendly and knowledgeable and totally willing to help you figure out the best bike for your budget. They also have a really cool self tune-up area so if you also need to just make some minor adjustments on your bike you can swing on by and borrow those tools. Consumer warning: this shop was dishonest, inept and nearly ripped me off. This is not the right place to go to get maintenance done on an older bike, or to go if you are a cycling maintenance novice. There are plenty of options in the city, avoid this one. To summarize my experience: I took an older mountain bike that I was fond of, which had fallen into disrepair, and asked this shop's opinion on what it would take to get it running like a champ. They suggested a full tune up and the replacement of some gear, totaling roughly $285. Being fond of the bike I went for it, but my girlfriend was skeptical that the bike could be revived. We went it and asked more specific questions, and I was told they could "100% guarantee" that it would be fit to hit the trails when they were done. Fast forward 4 days, I was called in to the shop, told they had screwed up on the assessment, they had pulled my year old sealed bottom bracket and messed it up, and they tried to return the bike to me in pieces! In the end, they didn't charge me, but they were dishonest, used-car-salesman-like, inept in their assessment and work, and I don't believe they would have backed off of their "100% guarantee " nonsense if there had been a way for them to hide their sub-par work. read more

One of the guys actually warned me against stealing a light (I am 35, not 12 and don't do that) because i asked him to throw the box away. And I had the receipt next to it. Never mind that I am not a theif. Way to build loyality dumbass! I rode 5 miles to make it to the store by 7:30 because I called them and checked. When I got there at 7:05, they pointed at a closed sign with 7 people still inside. We had just spent 800 dollars in the store the day before. GO ANYWHERE ELSE! Charge too much. I had an estimate to get repairs done on my bike, and then when I picked my bike up, they demanded more; said that more work had been done. I got a dereailluer, the part the derailleur hangs from, a chain, cogset, gears for the back, etc. I paid about $500. I noticed a few gears skipping right away. I brought it back, and they told me that I needed a new wheel and more, and that would cost another $200 or so. The skipping problem got worse, and I came back in two more times over the course of about a year. Once, the woman adjusted something, but both times, they'd looked at their computer at my record, and both times told me to buy a wheel. I eventually went to performance bike and found a wheel and got it put on. But the problem of skipping continued. The worker there identified that two chain links were stuck and that this was contributing to the problem. Box Dog Bikes sold me a chain that had always given problems. I took the bike back to box dog bikes and they agreed to replace the chain if I paid for it. They also had me buy a front sprocket, as it was worn off. After they replaced the chain, the bicycle worked fine -- no skipping in any gears. But I had to pay twice for a chain. It was not a good deal for me, and it has always bothered me. read more
