My first visit to Notch 8 was a few months ago during the COVID crisis, shortly after they reopened restaurants for outdoor dining only. The tables were spaced a very good distance from each other, and each server had gloves and masks on.
When my friend and I walked up, we were greeted warmly, seated and given paper printouts of the menu. The servers that day and every time I've been there since have all been wonderful. They truly do seem to get along like a little family. The orders are always brought to the table in a time manner even if the other tables are filled. They are always careful to observe safety precautions.
I've been there probably 6 times in the last 3 months, and the food is always hot, fresh, and tasty. The Pretzel appetizers is really something special. Its not mushy and gooey like everywhere else. The crust is thick but airy. While the pretzel is large, you don't feel like you've eaten a rock afterwards. Normally I like pretzels drenched in some kind of a cheese sauce, but I eat this pretzel plain. The sauce is like a honey mustard with a bit of cheesiness to it. Its good, but the pretzel has such amazing flavor on it own that it doesn't need anything else.
The Southwest Cobb Salad is a large portion, easily a meal itself! Loaded with fresh avocado, Pico de Gallo, cheese, you can add any kind of protein you like, grilled or Buffalo chicken, salmon, steak, or a burger!
The Korean chicken and Waffles is for those who love flavor and Spice. Sometimes you have to compromise favor for heat. Not this time! They brought the heat and sweetness in a epic combination, and poured it over a crispy chicken breast and thick, fluffy homemade waffle.
While everything i have to saw about Notch 8 is positive, I have to say that there was one specific thing that made a huge first impression within minutes of arriving at my first visit.
With out menus we also were given a printed letter from the owner. It thanked guests for choosing Notch and what to expect during our experience. It said that for proper sanitary purposes, our meals would be in to go food and beverage containers, plastic utensils. It asked to please to ask for condiments or any extras all at once since servers were walking extra far back and forth to the kitchen, as patio dining was new.
It also said to enjoy ourselves, we were finally out again! He reminded that since restaurants were finally opened again, this also marked his servers returning to work after being without income for months. He said that many had faithfully waited to return and if they helped you enjoy your dining experience, to please consider showing your gratitude, as they too were choosing to put their safety on the line to help you have a lovely time out.
I found the letter truly impressive, because it showed how much he valued his employees and cares for them, their safety, and their well being, and expects them to be treated with respect. It showed a very human side, a "realness." He was being straight and to the point, basically saying, hey, you're choosing to come out and dine while some people are still terrified of this illness that is literally killing people, and my servers may be some of those terrified people but some may be thisclose to losing their house or unable to feed their kids. So if you're not one of those people who has lost so much money from this economic nightmare that you can afford to eat out, and you are in good enough help that you are going to out eat, please be generous and show my servers that you appreciate being able to dine out again for the first time in months. Right now, that literally is a luxury for many people, and a couple months ago when people were more frightened, servers too were likely very scared but they needed to take care of their families too. I highly respected the owner caring for his people and being so straightforward with our community reminding us to be grateful for the gift of being able to leave our homes after several months, and to help share that gift. read more
