Hopefully, this was a one off experience. Have had good breakfasts here, and decided to have their Prime Rib dinner last night, 9/7/18. My son and I arrived at about 6:30, were promptly seated, and were waited on quickly. My son ordered a Guinness, and the bartender delivered a Yuengling. easily corrected. when the Guiness arrived, he said it was overcarbonated. Definitely not a "Guinness pour". But then, it wasn't their reputation for pouring a great Guiness that brought us here tonight. We both ordered the Prime Rib dinner, one med-rare, one med. food was delivered in a reasonable amount of time, but the meat was barely warm. more like room temp. the waitress advised us that we got the last 2 Prime Rib dinners, apologized, and took the food back to the kitchen for rewarming. brought it out in a few minutes. the meat was warmed. Not the best Prime Rib I've had. seemed a bit chewy. then after we finished our meal, we sat......and sat...... and sat.....waiting for our waitress to see if we wanted anything more. finally decided to get her attention and ask for the check. an underwhelming experience. Because of our good breakfast experiences, we'll be back. might be awhile before we try the Prime Rib again. maybe the meatloaf next time. read more

Me and my grandmother both ordered French onion soup from here. They very clearly chopped up and threw in some raw onions, bread and cheese. I informed my waitress and she brought us both new soups, this time with almost no onion and all bread. For my meal I ordered chicken Alfredo, it was okay. 10/10 wouldn't recommend coming here, if you really want homemade comfort food, make it yourself. Save your money. read more

Staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is pretty good. Bar area is nice but combines with a "family" area so it takes away from the bar feel. The food was okay. We had the meatloaf and a Reuben. Both were bland in taste. No seasoning or spices. Just plain meat. Mashed potatoes were normal Diner tasting. They had a couple of decent craft beers on tap. We requested a specific channel for a sports game and they changed it. However at some point a person seated at the bar, clearly a worker or family member popped behind the bar to change the channel. The good news, whatever they wanted wasn't on. But, if it was we wouldn't have been to pleased. We will try again at breakfast time to see if it's any better then. read more

I had to laugh at the young lady who posted pictures of the bathroom because she's right--it's a very nice upgrade but it seemed so out of place for the style of the restaurant. I ate lunch but before I left I noted they added a bar in the back and a deck that seems fairly new. The menu is a bit of a mish mash, but so is my personality, so who am I to judge? They have breakfast, Southern cuisine, Greek food, sandwiches, etc. I really don't understand the Greek food section but like I tell my psychiatrist, you don't have to understand it to accept it. I ordered a Satan's Pony beer from Southstreet Brewery in Charlottesville (great beer--check it out). I settled on the chicken and dumplings with green beans and macaroni and cheese as my two sides. My company ordered meatloaf (which had been my second choice). I was most surprised by the macaroni and cheese because usually at home-cooking style restaurants it can be hit or miss. It lacked aesthetic quality, but it was very flavorful and had enough salt as did the green beans. The dumplings were a little doughy, but good--plenty of chicken and different than what I expected. They were more of a Matzo ball style with a biscuit on the side. The meatloaf was prepared with a "secret" house sauce (which tasted sweetened with honey and ketchup). It made for a pretty presentation instead of just your average meatloaf. I thought the service was wonderful. We had a charming young man named Jacob wait on us and by the time we were finished there were four wait staff at our table during the slow period--all very conversational and friendly. Sad to say my return wasn't as good as my previous encounter. We were seated rather quickly for a busy Saturday morning, which was nice, but it took, literally, fifteen minutes before anyone came over to greet us. Just moved to the area and wanted to try out our local diner. The chicken and waffles is to die for. I had no idea fried chicken could be this good. You can taste the honey on the chicken, super crispy and tender meat. Waffle tasted like cake batter, which I loved, just wish they were a little crispy. We used to eat here every once a while, and it was always very good comfort food country cooking type stuff. Went there today for a breakfast brunch and was disappointed. Their prices have gone up substantially, and their breakfast menu was not nearly as good as I expected. The sausage gravy and biscuits had so much pepper in the gravy that it was actually unpleasant to eat it. None of their breakfast choices come with combinations of ham or sausage or bacon. All of those are side orders you have to pay extra for. read more

My grandson ordered two hotdogs and both rolls had mold on them. The waitress went to see if all the rolls were moldy and brought a roll out in her bare hand. When I requested to speak to a manager a lady came out and while I was telling her about the rolls was smiling and the waitress came out and she was smiling. Not once did they say anything about giving a discount for his meal. We will never eat there again! It's a shame that's how they operate a restaurant! read more

Hostess was friendly and helpful, waited 20 minutes for our server even though there were only two other tables it the restaurant (who were waiting on their check). Ended up having another server step in and once he did we had drinks immediately and our order placed and food out in 15 minutes so that was good. I went there with friends and was having a great time, good atmosphere, super music and entertainment BUT...the woman bartender was AWFUL. If you don't like your job get a different one. So I thought it was just a bad night for her, NOPE SHES HORRENDOUS ALL THE TIME I will never go back to the bar ever again !! Tried this gem for the first time. I heard several great reviews from friends and decided to check it out. Wow! For a diner it had a pretty lengthy menu which made it hard to decide. I ended up getting the fish Reuben, being from Florida we don't see it very often in Va. It was delicious! The portions were big and the food was hot and fresh! I'm sad to see so many low reviews. My party and I had a great meal here. I had driven past this place a ton of time, but never stopped for a meal. We I finally did. My group and I were on our way to convention far, far, away. They told me to pick a spot, so I suggest this place as it was on our way. It was a Friday morning around 7:15am when we strolled in. There were already a few people there. We were greeted at the door and taken to our table. Our drink orders were placed and we looked over our menus. Our drinks quickly came out. It was simple, coffee and water for all. The coffee here actually is pretty good. I don't think it Folgers or Maxwell House. This stuff had a good flavor. At this point we placed our orders. I was in the mood for sausage gravy and biscuits. I also ordered a side of bacon. The other 2 in my party ordered the make your own breakfast. Pick any 4 of the listed items. I could help by notice that the place inside was pretty basic. Nothing fancy at all. Just a nice down home feeling of a little mom and pop shop. Our server did come by and check to make sure our drinks were full. Our food soon came out. I don't think we waited too long. One of four items my friend got was a pancake. We all assumed it would be a little tiny flimsy thing. It wasn't. It was thick and the size of a hubcap. He did say it tasted great. In fact, the pick any for platter was huge from what they told me. All tasted good. My sausage gravy and biscuits were huge. It was actually a big portion. It had great flavor, and I was stuffed at the end. Bacon was crisp and tasty as well. The potatoes we not anything special. My only real complaint was the food temperature. I was expecting the sausage gravy to be hot as well as the potatoes. They came out warm, so my guess was, it sat out while the other dishes were being made. It wasn't cold or anything. The service was great and the people working there were nice, and it's cheap. I'll have to go back here again one day. Too bad I live too far from here. If my food was hot, I would have given it 4 stars, but I have to drop it on star for that. The service is always wonderful & the food comes out fast. They have a lot of breakfast options, so one day I may venture from my usual. They're open for lunch & dinner, too. Stopped in here for the first time yesterday around 10:30 a.m. to enjoy a late breakfast prior to errand-running. Except for 4 other tables, place was empty, so we were seated right away in one of the booths. Clean & neatly appointed with condiments, although the flowers in our vase were dead, which was a little depressing. Hubby asked for water & a large orange juice ($2.69); I had a large orange juice & coffee ($1.95). Orange juice was fresh; coffee strong, but fresh also - none of that old burnt taste you get when coffee's been sitting around too long. For our meals, hubby ordered an American Cheese Omelet ($6.99), which came with home fries & a choice of bread; hubby asked for the biscuit. I had the Western Omelet ($7.99) - also with home fries & a biscuit. The omelets (3-egg) were excellent - perfectly cooked & with generous fillings. While husband's American Cheese filling is self-explanatory, my omelet was overflowing with diced green pepper, onions, mushrooms, ham, & cheese, & was served with small cups of salsa & sour cream on the side. The bottle of Tabasco sauce on the table was the perfect extra touch for those who like their eggs spicy. It was, however, downhill from there. The "home fries" were soft & soggy - no crispiness whatsoever - & the biscuits were over-baked (way too brown) & possibly stale. They were like rocks. Each plate was also "decorated" with the saddest-looking garnishes we've EVER seen - a tiny heavily-wilted leaf of kale topped with a quarter slice of dried-up-&-partially-brown orange & 2 small soggy red grapes. My husband said that someone needs to tell the kitchen that it's not okay to save the garnishes & re-use them over & over on other customers' plates - lol!! Really - that's how bad they looked. Better to have no garnish at all than to "decorate" a plate with such dreck. Service was okay - we were asked several times if we needed anything - but it was kind of depressing to see the "hostess" sitting in the booth next to us reading. The menu is also odd - a very limited mixture of Greek, Italian, & American offerings. Prices appear more than reasonable, which probably explains why the existing tables during our visit, along with the few that came in while we were leaving consisted of parties all definitely in their 80's. Our bill after tax but before tip came to $23.43. All in all - not a bad place that I'd avoid, but not one I'd go out of my way for. read more

Always find an excuse to stop here and get their breakfast four choice combo with a chocolate chip pancake, cheesy scrambled eggs and grits, and applesauce. I stopped in here for dinner on 4-21-2018 with a good friend. I had iced tea, chicken and waffles (I'm trying this dish out to see which place has the best) and half a chef salad with ranch dressing. Our server was "Sarah M." This was my first time here. Before getting inside, we had quite a time finding parking. Needless to say, we did find parking, although it was in the back in the grass. Now comes the good stuff. My friend ordered "cheese fries" to start. Those cheese fries were plentiful. Good flavor. Hot. Fresh ingredients. Now for the meal. My chicken and waffles were okay. You could definitely tell it was chicken. It just had that "fresh off the yard" look and taste. The waffles were more than enough for one person. The syrup was nice and warm too. The half chef salad was great. Plenty of ingredients. Fresh. The best part...the iced tea. I had a whole pitcher to my self....because I was thirsty. I can see myself coming back again the next time I am in the area. I will try something different from the menu too. read more

WOW! We have been living in the area for three years and drove past Northside 29 multiple times always saying we needed to stop in. Finally, last night we stopped for dinner. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is that we only had the burgers so I don't feel it would be fair to rate a restaurant based on something so simple. That said, the burgers tasted like they just came off the grill in your backyard with a true chargrilled flavor. The service was excellent, the very attentive waiter was perfectly on key with the exception of him not asking it we needed refills even though our glasses were almost empty. Some may think thats a plus! FYI, Tuesdays are 1/2 price burgers and happy hour domestic beer is $2 bucks!! Come on!!! I'm going back as soon as possible for their "comfort food" menu; I'm a huge meatloaf fan and its on the menu....can't wait!! read more

The sign outside says that they serve comfort food, and I love comfort food, so I decided to stop in. I was really disappointed when I saw the menu, because there was no comfort food listed anywhere. My idea of comfort food is macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, maybe some soups or clam chowder. This place has burgers, salads, and sandwiches. The closest thing I could find close to comfort food was the barbecue sandwich. The fries were really good, but there was a lot of fat in the pork meat. TL;DR - Food good. Wait staff bad. I'd really like to say that this place is FANTASTIC but unfortunately, the service is really hit or miss...and most days..it's a miss. I've frequented Northside after I discovered their great breakfasts and huge pancakes! The food is pretty good. It's a cozy atmosphere and the quality seems to be comparable to the price. The worst part is the wait staff. You have to wait to be seated and many times you walk in, there is not a single server in the dining room, so you are left waiting for a few minutes or so. There have been several times that I have waited for an unreasonable amount of time for a server to greet us at our table and bring drinks or even take our order. I've been brought the wrong item once before when I specifically asked for a different item. The staff doesn't really seem to be engaged until they hand you the check while shooting a sincere smile at you, followed by an enthusiastic, "Have a great day!" aka. "Leave a great tip". There have been quite a few positive experiences that I have had, such as prompt and friendly service by people who actually care and work. Not all of the servers are terrible though, just a majority of them. read more
