Tuesday 12 May 2026. A beautiful sunny day, so our lunch bunch decided to eat at Northside 29 in the garden as we have done previously on a number of occasions. On arrival at the restaurant at 11,30, we were informed that the garden did not open until 1200 noon but, if we wished, we could sit at the bar and have a drink until the garden tables were open. This sounded reasonable as we could choose our meals from the menu whilst having a drink, so we opted for this and moved to the bar. We waited for someone to serve us - and waited! After 20 minutes -and being vert obviously ignored by the waitstaff who were interacting with a couple who had dined at the bar and were leaving - so we left for another venue with the clear impression that our custom was not werlcome. Having been in the hospitality business locally. I find this behavior inexcusable and I hope that this family business will take steps to correct and avoid what has left an impression of deliberate rudeness to their customers. read more

They make an excellent Reuben sandwich and their in-house made chips are very good. Their Rueben has a generous amount of corned beef with Swiss cheese and sauerkraut and dressing on rye bread. The corned beef had an excellent taste. The order of Country Fried Steak and eggs was another story. This was the second time around and the the last time for this order. Both times the Country Fried Steak was not good and most of it was left on the plate. Everything else with this order was very good, including the white gravy and the eggs. But the meat was really not edible. The Chopped Steak order was very good. The chopped steak actually tasted like very good chopped steak and not ground beef. What it was, it was good and tasty. We had onion rings as an appetizer and their onion rings always have a great taste. There food orders are served to you table as soon as they are ready. Our waiter was very attentive and checked on us as he served other tables. I recommend Northside and the Couhntry Fried Steak is the only dish I haven't liked. read more

Usually a good experience. However, during a recent visit (8 August 2026), the restaurant floor was extremely dirty. There were used napkins under the tables in addition to bits of food (french fries, pieces of bread, etc.). The teenage wait staff were polite, but they require some supervision and direction. Instead of standing around the bar, shooting the breeze. when not waiting on tables, they could be cleaning up, to ensure that the facility is presentable. Also, find another restroom deodorizer. Not the greatest thing to smell as you enter the restaurant. read more

In 3 years we visited Northside a number of times with a few missteps by the kitchen . Our last few times it was all on the downside . This last time was the nail in the coffin as far as we are concerned. My wife's fish dinner was uneatable because the fish was overcooked to the point it was impossible to eat . My fish was not as bad but still overcooked and I ate a few bites . Both our vegetables were also overcooked. Baked potatoes were good so that's all we ate . We told the waiter and he offered to replace the fish . We appreciated that but we were disappointed with the experience and wanted to leave . They took off $7 off our total check of $58 for 2glasses of wine ,2 baked potatoes and 1/2 of fish . I could only guess that they don't care less if we return or not . read more

After driving by for years and seeing a full parking lot, we finally got up enough courage to stop by and have breakfast. Don't go to IHOP. Eat local. It's much better. Food: 4/5 Came out hot, tasted great. Eggs, sausage, potatoes and pancakes with syrup. I'd skip the eggs Benedict, as it's all about the hollandaise sauce, and order that at your favorite bistro where they make it better. Service: 5/5 Normal, classic, well done service. Was it perfect? No. But who cares. It was real and honest. Ambiance: 4/5 I'm just looking for a place I'd wanna hang out for an hour or so and eat in peace. This place does it. Place was clean and bustling. Tuesday August 4th. To start things off it took 45 minutes to receive my food. Once I did get my food the fries were cold over cooked and unseasoned. The Honey Chicken I ordered was overcooked and I could not taste a hint of honey. Also my apple sauce had no flavor and was like watered down soup. As for my grandparents my grandmother received a burger with onion which she explicitly said no onion because it tastes horrible to her. Both hers and my grandfather had undercooked fries and my grandfather's fish was way undercooked. On top of all this our waiter only came by the table 2 times to get our order than give us our food. All of it was overpriced for how horrible it tasted and still we had to get up and go find an employee to get the check. It was very over crowded and 100 dollars was way to much for a half off burger, come honey fried chicken and 4 pieces of fish. As for drinks the tea was not sweet at all and the experience sucked. I could get better food, service and ambiance from a McDonalds about to be shut down by the health department. I will not be eating here again and I do not recommend you going at all. read more

Nice diner with typical diner fare. Something about me - I LOVE chipped beef, and it's one of my favorite things to order when I visit breakfast diners. I ordered it here, and it was subpar. It wasn't bad, but I think it lacked salt or flavor - couldn't taste the beef, and the gravy was just meh. Our waitress looked came by several times to see if we needed anything, but she seemed to be unsure of herself - perhaps she is new or in training. My sister lives nearby so we decided to meet up for a late lunch. Walked in and it was a mess- food all over the floor. I don't care if it was after the "lunch rush" they should still clean up. I found it overall dingy. My husband went to the bathroom and there was no soap and he told a waiter and when we left still no soap. Service was slow; we asked for napkins and had to wait a long time and finally asked another waiter. Icing on the cake was that my sister's order came missing two key components- the meat and the bread on her gyro salad. Instead of taking the salad back and bringing it back right they just brought her some of the meat and forgot the pita. My mom had meat loaf and we ended up throwing the leftovers out. Would never go here again. I had a gyro sandwich and it wasn't too bad but nothing else anyone had at the table warrants returning. read more

Beverly was terrific - friendly and knowledgeable about the food, which was excellent. The pumpkin pancake was very good - not too sweet (hey it's October so it's OK). I can't recommend Northside 29. We were seated.. while waited for anyone to at least great us. While we waited the tables around us were then seated and almost immediately greeted and orders taken while we sat another 25 minutes totally ignored. We never got to order. So we left. The greeter at the door said have a nice day.... I did comment " it would have been nicer had we received service". We were traveling and happened to see the restaurant. It was so delicious! Spaghetti was so great (with a Greek side salad). My husband had the Rueben and he said it was probably the best he'd ever had. The huge winner was the fried pickles. They were truly the best fried pickles we've ever had before. My wife and I joined two other neighborhood couples to enjoy half price burger night at the diner. We arrived around 7pm to catch the tail end of the dinner rush. They were able to seat us in the back dining room with the bar though with little waiting. As we were sitting down, I saw a burger go by with a delicious looking onion ring on top. Turns out that is the Western burger which my wife ordered. I ordered the Hawaiian burger and subbed onion rings for my side. One of the others tried the SMO burger as well. We all got beers on tap and they had several IPAs for me to choose from. Yay. Our burgers arrived in no time. The onion rings did not disappoint and all our burgers were delish if not slightly too large. I probably should have cut mine in half but I persevered and ate it all. I probably would try the SMO burger on another visit. That thing was smothered in Swiss cheese hiding all the grilled onions and mushrooms underneath. It looked awesome. Service was good for the evening. There was an issue with two of the bills but that got all worked out no problem. We would probably return again not on burger night though and try one or two of their Greek dishes on the menu. read more

I wanted to love this place but I just didn't. At all. The owner was extremely welcoming, and our waitress was great - attentive and social without hovering. Now for the food. We got the sampler platter to start, and the fried pickles and potato skins knocked it out of the park. I didn't try the chicken wings but my friends said they were standard wings. Then, the entrees that were the real disappointment. My friend got the gyro pita for $11 but I wanted to treat myself so I got the $16 gyro platter. When we got them, I was completely taken aback. The platter is literally the pita with a side salad instead of fries and three tiny zucchini fries, at a $5 markup. I'm actually insulted that they think this it's fair to call that a "platter" and say it's worth $5 more than the pita. The gyro meat was also clearly from frozen, not fresh. I had to get all the way to the center of the pita for any sauce or toppings. The waitress told us there was lettuce in the pita and there was not. Yet another let down. Our friend got the chicken and waffles. She said the waffles were good but the chicken was just alright. I tried a bite and it wasn't bad at all. I'd eat it but it could've used a bit more... something. Our friend also said it seemed overcooked. Nice folks but I'll be taking my business elsewhere next time im in town. read more

Food at Northside is very good. Pancakes are large, warm, and thick. My pancakes came with warm syrup and soft butter (not frozen). They even tasted like pancakes. I had a generous serving of scrambled eggs. They also had a great taste. My bowl of grits didn't have mush taste to them and neither did my two sausage patties. For me, my sausage patties needed more fat and spices in them, they were too lean to have much taste. I did enjoyed their coffee. Their service was very good. read more

We have passed by this restaurant numerous times. We usually have dogs in the car, so we can't stop. The first time we didn't have dogs, we pulled in to find it closed. They close early on Sunday's. We finally had an opportunity to stop, and we took it. I ordered chicken and waffles and was surprised when I was served chicken with bones in it. Ok, I have only had this dish at two other restaurants, so I am no expert. The fried chicken was to die for. I got a to go box immediately as it came with a breast, thigh, and a wing. The waffle was good, but I was quite happy with my fried chicken. It is on the menu without the waffle, but for some reason, I thought the waffle would be a healthier option than french fries! Bahaha. Order the chicken, either with the fries or the waffle and you won't be sorry. You will be sorry if you show up at 6pm on a Sunday and find them closed. Use to really love this place but it's really gone down hill. I have a gluten allergy so I have dietary limitations. 1st my coffee. It must have been sitting awhile.because it was not fresh. The refill was much better though. My order comprised of Egg Whites, grits Ham steak (Country Ham) and Gluten free toast. The Egg Whites were decent, Grits were good and this Diner has the best Gluten free toast out there. But was disappointing was the Ham. For being 5.99 a slice, it was very dry. Also, every thing came out separately. What ever happened to.just one plate. I know it may sound picky but getting numerous plates for an order that could.easily fit on one plate is overkill. I've seen this restaurant , driven by it on Rt 29. I heard a lady say it was really good. I usually go to Bob Evans and have their biscuits and gravy (separate bowl of gravy with two biscuits on the side), with a side of hash browns and 2 scrambled eggs. the ticket for both my husband and I - about $30- 4 miles from the house. Northside was about 7 miles down the road. I ordered their biscuits and gravy (it comes with breakfast potatoes) and I ordered 2 scrambled eggs. Unfortunately for me, the gravy was poured over the biscuits, and that's just not the way I eat them since I don't want the biscuit soggy. It wasn't bad, but I left 3/4 of it on the plate. My SO had eggs benedict; he said they were pretty good. Neither of us ate the breakfast potatoes, and I liked my scrambled eggs. This cost us $43 without a tip paying cash- $45 on card. We're good tippers so $57 or so total. For me, it was too expensive for what it was. The service people were excellent, the place filled up pretty quickly- we were only there about 45 mins- and lots of parking. I can see why it's popular and maybe we'll go back one day for something else if we are driving by. Solid 3.5 if I could give it. read more

So, my friend started the conversation by saying "It looks like a hole in the wall but it's delicious". As I was in the middle of nowhere VA, I said let's roll. It looks like a diner on the outside. And the front part seems very country comfort food. But the chalk menu clearly shows this is not a scaled down Cracker Barrel. The back part seems new and has a really pretty stone lined bar area. Then you go out to the patio and the outdoor seating. As it was FINALLY a warm-ish day, we ate outside. Prompt service! The menu is pretty big and it was honestly hard to decide. My friend just had a baby and demanded the cinnamon roll. You don't mess with ladies who just had a baby. And honestly, worth every damn calorie. And I make homemade cinnamon rolls. This was warm, gooey and delicious. I opted for the western omelet with home fries and a biscuit. It's pretty hard to mess up the first two and both were very tasty. But biscuits, you show your cards on biscuits. I'm from the south, so I know. And yeah, it was on point. Fluffy, carb heaven. My friend had an eggs benedict and her hubby had steak and eggs. Clean plates all around. If it wasn't an hour and a half from my house this would be a go to spot for me. And the brunch menu looks epic. read more
