I live around the block and come often. First if you ever need churros there is a vendor right outside the parking lot that sells tasty churros most evenings. The parking lot if small but you'll find a spot. Carts are always out back when I get there. My favorite part of this place is the bollillo. I try to come from time to time to eat it when it is fresh. The produce is alright and based on the price it matches the quality. It's a smaller northgate from what I'm used to but honestly it's such a cute neighborhood northgate that I'm so glad it's here. I used to go to Superior Grocers to get pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) weekly, but they got rid of the self-checkout registers and the regular lines are painfully long now. Glad Northgate is just a few minutes further down the street. Their prices and products are comparable. I prefer some of the pan dulce at Superior more like the coffee cake and cheese rolls, but I'll have what Northgate has to offer for a quicker stop. Their cash register lines are short and move quick, so I appreciate that! Pan dulce ranges in price from 2 pieces to 4 pieces for $5. Not bad! They have pretty decent meat in the deli, a fresh variety of cheap produce and ready made food, much like Superior. They are currently selling big bunches of marigolds for $8.99 for día de los muertos ofrendas, which is cheaper than other stores! read more

Northgate Market on Pacific Ave in Long Beach is the oldest of the company's stores in the city. Originally operating as a Lucky Market. It is small but well stocked. You will find a hot foods section with tamales. A fresh Bakery with sweet breads, cakes and fresh tortillas. A service meat and fish counter. The staff are friendly. Closest Northgate Mexican market to our home, not within walking distance. It's on the smaller side compared to other Northgates that we have been to, but it has all the necessities. They have the butcher counter where you take a number and wait in line, but they also have butchered meat in packages for quick gets. We usually stop by the two super markets closer, but neither one of them sell the Sonora style flour tortillas that I really like...Northgate does, so we stopped by during errands to pick up a package for $3.99. There were plenty of cash register lines and they had prepared foods on a hot buffet self-serve cart...the food didn't really look too appetizing. read more

My go-to spots for marinated taco meat is usually Superior or Northgate market. I did not have a hankering for tacos, but my son and his fishing buddy still gotta eat. What better meal than tacos? THREE-PACK TAQUIZA TACO MEAT. You know what I'm talking about... pre-packaged in-house marinated set of beef, pork, and chicken. Enough to feed at least 8-12 people. Truth: I don't own a taquiza griddle, but that's next on my things to get this summer. I cooked this stovetop on a cast iron skillet. One type of meat at a time, and plated it separately on a long platter. PRODUCE was fresh. Seriously fresh. You know how in the Kroger chain, they have their "A" list stores like Ralph's, then they have their less quality stuff sold at "B" list stores, like Food4Less? Well, this bodega had limes that were "A" grade and will keep longer. They were young and not aged or bruised. The skin was shiny with tight pores, meaning they were juicy and ripe. Picked up a couple of these babies and Roma tomatoes. Already had onion, cilantro, and avocado at home. YELLOW CORN TORTILLAS were still warm in the bag. Tortilleria on site! Debated on flour or corn and picked the bag with the steaming warm tortillas... decided based on the amount of condensation on the packaging. COVID PRECAUTIONS in full effect here. Actually didn't realize the lady who walked in front of me entered the establishment without a facemask (still yellow tier at the time of my visit), and was quickly asked to put on a mask by an employee. PARKING was ample. Lots of parking diagonally marked in an L-shaped parking lot. This is def your one-stop taco spot for a quick pick-up meal, if you like authentic food and do not mind cooking at home. read more

Great market with an emphasis on Latin American foods and products. Stopped here the other night to pick up dinner and some groceries. Their rotisserie chicken rivals that of Costco's and it's a steal for about $5. I also grabbed some buffalo wings, pupusas, blue corn tortillas and two types of salsa. Every thing was freshly made and hot, so when I got home it was dinner time! They also have a great meat counter and very fresh veggies. One item that I never find at Ralphs or Vons is fresh garbanzo beans. If you've only had the canned ones, you 're in for a treat with the fresh ones! Next time? This review is based on my recent visit a few weeks ago for some ceviche. Everyone was wearing a mask inside which was great to see. Waited in a short line for some ceviche by the pound - I had no worries about the quality or taste because you could tell the product looked fresh (it's made daily) and I've had it at other locations before and have yet to be disappointed. Picked up some guacamole and tostadas and waited in a short check out line. As expected, it tasted great. I would recommend this location. read more

My favorite grocery store, BUT they need to train their employees or get rid of some employees in the hot food section. All the employees on the hot food department are careless and they never want to help costumers they've had me and people waiting with out helping or even looking at us. I mean they do see us and see we're waiting to be help, but they rather keep doing what they're doing and ignore costumers. Especially a lady working in the morning she always has attitude. When you first enter, the most amazing smell of freshly baked goods hit your nose and you have to remind yourself that you're not in heaven but in a Mexican grocery store. The smell is simply divine. I really love shopping at this grocery store. The prices are fairly low especially the produce. They have a wide selection of fruits and vegetables which are really good quality. Often times I'll find fruits and vegetables from my native country (Jamaica) here as well which is always a great treat. It would help to speak some Spanish since all the employees are Spanish speaking and only a few of them speak English. The few times I've had questions, I was always able to find a English speaking staff who was always super helpful. Last Christmas after being unable to get my Tamales from my old neighbor whose Mexican grandma makes the absolutely best Tamales, I ordered a few from here and they were delicious. If I'm not able to contact my old neighbor again, I'll probably continue ordering from here. read more

I love the Northgate Market chain. I also love that I live walking distance to one but there are two things that annoy me every time I go. 1. Dead flys in the ceviche. Yes, flys. I LOVE ceviche but have made the decision to stop buying it at Northgate due to the overwhelming amount of flys that get caught in the ceviche. Its in plan sight and the employees don't really care. Business as usual. Pretty disgusting. 2. Not enough cashiers. Lines get very long here. Business is booming, the store is packed(a great thing), yet only half the registers are open. Lines sometimes go out into the isles. I hope they improve on these issues. Especially the flys. Other than that, their bolios are always fresh and hot and they have a lot of great Latino food products. read more

I first visited the flagship store in San Diego on 43rd Street last year when I lived in Carlsbad, and since moving back to Long Beach, so I had to check out the closest store. This location has most of the bells and whistles as the other store, but it's not as massive in size. They have the meat department, seafood, fresh, inexpensive vegetables, fresh baked goods, and a to-go department to drool over. As soon as I walked into the store, fresh bread/rolls were being placed into the bulk bread case, so I took four, then headed to the veggies. Cilantro, radishes, avocado, red onions, red potatos for later, and roma tomatos and I was done with the veggie section. From the 'deli', I ordered carnita and chicharron de panza, as well as fresh-made pico de gallo; and sooo reasonable! I took my purchased goods home and proceeded to assemble my dinner, including an imported Coke from Mexico - authentico! read more

Great store overall, but overall if your gonna purchase any meat items I highly suggest going elsewhere. Have bought shrimp that were so bad they stunk up the entire car before getting home. This is while packaged! And today I bought chicken that was so spoiled that within 2 minutes of being in my car I could smell the odor of the chicken. I went to return it shortly after and thought I could just exchange it for another package of chicken. Spoiled again! Northgate has change drastically because of who they decide to hire. It is clear that just about anyone can get a job there because they have poor customer service and children there working who don't know how to do their job correctly. Most of their workers stare at me all the time with weird looks and even one of their workers Jose followed me after I shopped there and wanted to start a fight as I'm walking with my mom. Northgate clearly doesn't know how to hire people that will benefit the store instead they hire children who aren't mature enough to just do their job and talk about the customers and give them weird looks. I don't like coming here as much but when I need something it's close by so I just go anyway. The only thing is the security guard was very friendly friendliest out of all of them. but everyone else that works here acts like they have a stick up their butt and are too good for you. Especially the cashiers, is it too much to put a smile on your face and act like you enjoy working here? You can say hi or how's it going but I get nothing every time. Even when they hand me my receipt they don't look at me and start talking to the other cashier or something, and I say thanks have a good one.... but Haha there's nothing. I like going here for their fresh juices. They have a big selection of cerviches and salsas. The location in Downey has a huge bakery with tons of pastries and cakes. Great party platters too. Sometimes they have good sales on meats and vegetables. Sometimes I treat myself to the hot food counter. Last time I ordered the Cuban sandwich. It was good but a little on the pricy side. I had the urge to make home made empanadas the other day. My mother made some for me recently and it seemed simple enough; masa, chicken, queso, and fry them up. I headed to Northgate Supermarket because this is THE GO TO place for everything and anything Mexican. Northgate Supermarket is located in a section of Long Beach I know all too well. I grew up in the Wrigley section and my family used to shop at Lucky's Supermarket (back in the early 90s). The lot has since morphed into various shopping centers - but none to the caliber of Mini Mexico. I have only been to Northgate twice in my life -- once to fetch some goods for my mom and another time with my gringo boyfriend. I would have to say that both experiences were like walking into a Hollywood strip club; you are attracted by all the flashy goods, the colorful pinatas, the bumpin' music, and cheap meat -- however, you are intimated by the foot traffic, the 10 security guards walking around making sure all is in order, and the cheap meat. How can all this meat be 85% cheaper than the meat at Ralphs or Vons? Hmmm. They have everything here -- at a fraction of the price. Fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, tortillas, pastries, A HOT DELI!!! The hot deli is a sight; glorious amounts of pork fried to perfection and thrust into a hot case for display. Makes your mouth water just by staring. One thing I don't really like is the number system they have for orders. Take a number and wait for your number to be called...if you snooze, you will definitely lose. The patrons of Northgate Market are pros -- and they know the system inside and out. They wait for you to be distracted when your number is called and then they run in to claim your "man." By the time you realize this, you are still waiting for number 22 and 26 is up and running. There is no cutting either. Have you ever tried to cut in front of a Latina woman with 2 kids in her cart and one attached at her leg? Ruthless! All in all, Northgate is a conglomerate of goodness that can only be appreciated if you go! Addendum: Empanadas were a FAIL. My mom would find it amusing, I am sure. read more

As a supermarket, Northgate is not my first choice. However, it might be the best butcher shop in all of Long Beach. They make their own cheese, salsas, tortillas, carnitas, pollo asada, beans (made with CHORIZO!) and just about anything else you could want if you are looking for a home cooked feeling Mexican meal for dirt cheap. Ever had Cherimoya ? No, well first off let me explain to you this store. Northgate is the Ralphs of mexican supermarkets. I think the only english you will find is that of the cashiers, and even that is pretty broken "eh, enithing ulse?" no, thats it senorita! A guy is always walking around with a broom, sweeping the same isle while maybe dancing under the pinatas like a romantic paris vacation. The cherimoya is a Latin American piece of fruit that resembles a less-armored artichoke. If you ask the produce guy at Fox & Obel whether it is good, he will respond, half lasciviously, half wistfully, "Oh, it is so sweet." Its flavor is described as a combination of papaya, pineapple and banana. While it is indeed sweet, it's much subtler in taste than you'd think, sort of like an apple-pear. Peel off the thin skin, and the texture is nearly fish-like, as the flesh comes off in clearly defined sections. Its seeds are plentiful, black, about the size and shape of very large, black lima beans. They're good for spitting across the sidewalk as you eat the cherimoya. read more

First of all my mom placed an order at the Bakery for a strawberry cake for my birthday, the day before. The lady at the register was horrible. My mom was telling me that the lady was giving her the wrong prices. But at the end she paid for what I wanted which was a white cake with mocha frosting and fresh strawberry fruit inside the cake for 15.99. They charged an extra $2.99 for fresh fruit. So the day of my birthday and it was finally time to cut the cake. I was excited and my family and friends were here and i cut a piece so see NOT A SINGLE FREAKING strawberrie, nothing, zero, nada! You could of imagined how mad i was, given it my bday and my mom had ordered a cake to my liking and there was only bread with mocha filling in the middle. My mom had paid extra for fresh fruit to be added and nothing. So i didn't even eat the damn cake! I called that night to complain and someone told me they couldn't do anything to call back tomorrow morning so we did and even then they kept my mom on the phone for so freaking long to just get ahold of the damn manager. My mom hung up because nobody was helping her and i had to go to the market and complain myself. When i get there the lady has the nerve to tell me they didn't have the things they needed to make my cake and she offered me a Chocoflan. First of all the chocoflan is disgusting looking, the flan had so many holes, THAT IS NOT HOW A FLAN SHOULD LOOK!!! A flan is smooth, that's how u know the flan is going to taste good. Anyways i had ordered a cake because that's what i wanted! NOT a chocoflan! So i decided to just get my $ back! So My bday cake was ruined! I ended up WITH NO FUCKING CAKE!
