Passing through from Michigan after a long 13.5-hour drive, we were searching for the best upscale dining experience in North Platte, and North 40 Chophouse exceeded our expectations. Practically perfect in every way. Amelia and the rest of the staff were attentive, genuinely welcoming, and kept everything running seamlessly from start to finish. Both of us ordered the Prime Rib Dip with fries--and wow. The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, with not a trace of fat or gristle. The rich, savory au jus added even more depth, and the horseradish sauce brought just the right amount of kick to complement every bite. Even the fries arrived hot, crisp, and satisfying after a full day on the road. We just drove 10 hours today and we're looking for a nice restaurant to have dinner and a drink. We sat in the bar area and ordered off the tavern menu. We both had a prime rib dip and it just melted in your mouth. We ended up sharing an espresso crème brûlée for dessert and it was delicious as well. North 40, which we dined at based on our hotel front staff lady's recommendation, turned out to be a pleasant, reasonably decent and unassuming destination. All their parking lots were full so we expected the worst when we pulled up, but it turned out not to be very full so must have been parking poachers. Service was not super fast but OK. We had the salmon atop mashed potatoes, a Caesar salad, the poblano soup, and the chicken fried steak (don't get this). Cocktails good. The service was above average. Waitress recommended A fish I hadn't heard of, which she said was similar to black cod. The fish was cooked to perfection, the lobster sauce was superb but it was served on a bed of sautéed spinach which was too hot for the rest of the tender flavors. I also tried their signature North 40 wedge salad. It had ranch dressing which didn't go great with the blue cheese on the salad. They should stick to blue cheese dressing like most other restaurants. My wife had the Salad Midi. It appears they used a lot of raw garlic in the dressing. It was too hot and potent garlic for her. She also had the seafood chowder. It looked like they had forgotten something when it arrived, where's the broth, She was not thrilled with the overall taste of this, so she left most of it for me to finish. If she wasn't new to waiting tables then she was new to the restaurant. Despite that she did an admirable job. The time management between our appetizers and our mains was very good as well. The food itself was great! Our drinks were made well and delicious. I had the French onion soup. It was a good French onion soup, a little thinner broth than I'm used to, but it was still tasty. In some of these soups, the bottom of the bowl turns into a kind of sludge. This one was good from the first spoonful to the last. The "Caprese style "appetizer was to die for according to my two companions. The strip steak, fillet, and prime rib were all prepared well and cooked well. We all enjoyed our proteins very much. The one criticism of our food that I could offer is that the brussels sprouts were kind of soggy, not crisp like one might expect. We shared a crème brûlée because it was big enough for two. Our companion had the blackberry lemon cheesecake. It was good, but the only thing blackberry about it were the two blackberries that were on top. All in all, we had a very good time here. The food in this restaurant is magnificent! I was one of the Miss Nebraska Judges and we were TREATED to the best meal I've ever had! We were first greeted with a glass of champagne! Let's start with the good: [[HIGHLIGHT]]North 40 has a great atmosphere. It's understated but elegant and assures you that this is no Texas Roadhouse. They have real gas lamps out front, a live lobster tank swimming with the fat crustaceans, and a dry aging locker in the lobby: nice touches.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The manager (or maybe owner, not sure) greeted us with complimentary flutes of sparkling wine when he learned it was our first visit. The complimentary rolls were piping hot and delicious (though a bit lacking in salt... more on that below). My wife ordered the halibut which was cooked to perfection. And the house cab I had with my steak was a great table wine, very acceptable quality for a house wine. Now the not so great: the steak. Don't get me wrong: this is quality meat. But it really needed more seasoning. I ordered the sirloin, not the choicest steak cut I recognize, but sirloin is perfectly fine when done well. (And the eye watering prices for other cuts, particularly the dry aged steaks, also helped push me towards the sirloin.) But I don't think it was just my choice of meat--others in our party ordered the ribeye and had a similar experience with seasoning. Anyway, this was "baseball cut," meaning more of a chunky cube of meat than a classic flat-ish steak. As a result, the ratio of surface to interior was lower than your average steak. Fine, but then you really need to get it seasoned properly. And it was, I hate to say, lacking in salt and general flavor. Maybe I should've ordered a sauce, though our server said nothing about this, so I didn't think I was making a mistake. And a good steak should be delicious on its own. Fortunately we had some sauce left from the beef tataki appetizer (which was great) that salvaged the steak. Absent that I would've been pretty disappointed. Further the side of fries I got with my steak was surprisingly small. I don't need or expect a mountain of fries but this was really a meager handful at best. This was doubly surprising as I had mentioned when ordering that I was planning to share some fries with my son, and again our server said nothing about this, like, hey, maybe order him his own side of fries. The fries themselves were good, but I didn't get to eat very many of them. Maybe this is too negative. It isn't like we had a bad experience. Plenty of choices, not just steaks. Lots of cuts to choose from wet and dry aged. I got a dry aged delmonico, aged well not overly funky and trimmed very well (no hard pellicle left behind). A friend of mine owns a steakhouse back home so I can be picky as he runs a tight ship. North 40 seems to be doing everything right. The Terri and Dan came out and spoke with us and figured out a way to make it work. To say they made accommodations is not saying enough. They went above and beyond expectation and then some. I had not even completed my appetizer when a server brought my entre. We were told by our server that they were instructed to turn tables quickly that night. Desert was brought 50 minutes after being seated - we hadn't even yet finished our wine. Total bill - approached $400 with 2 dinners, a moderately priced bottle of wine and tip. WHAT A WASTE! I gladly pay premium prices for a premium dining experience - but that is no longer the North 40 CH. I wont be back! read more

Service was good, food delivery a bit slow. Main courses, Mahi Mahi and Filet Mignon were dried out and lukewarm when they arrived at our table. Terrible waste of a filet mignon as it was over cooked, medium well versus the medium rare that was requested. Mahi Mahi was a precooked frozen variety that was just defrosted and reheated for the plate. Server apologized for the over cooked filet and comped us a dessert. If you are anywhere near North Platte or considering stopping through North 40 Chophouse is a MUST!! It all starts with the amazing staff and great decorating inside. I will list some pictures so you can see for yourself! We started with the shrimp and the sauce was as tasty as it comes. Jambalaya soup was a great starter as well. We tried numerous cocktails on the menu and didn't find one that wasn't to our linking. Moving onto the main course we ordered a huge bone in rib-eye that was cooked to perfection. From the rustically elegant welcoming folks at the front door, to the top notch, top shelf bartenders and liquors, this place will amaze you. You walk in the front door and there is a dedicated room for aging high grade meats, you can see through the window and watch as the tenderization process takes place. As you watch that process, you can chill out with the live Lobsters that are swimming in a huge and well-balanced salt water aquarium. The kids will love that sight,,, in the middle of America! Now, lets get to the food! My favorite part: Top notch, well educated, seasoned servers presenting the finest plate of perfectly presented food! I HAD to take pictures, because it was just, that, good. I was there for the New Years Weekend Gala's and my favorite part of the day, after watching the coolest sunrises in the midwest, was to go to dinner at the North 40 Chophouse. The pictures speak for themselves, but let me say, I requested no and low-salt options and was pleased to see that they understood what Al Dente steamed, was when preparing veggies! The Dover Cod was the delicacy for New Years Eve, as I will assume by the robust price (yes, this is NOT TGIF Fridays people), that this was actually Dover Cod, caught somewhere between the Mediterranean and the North Sea.
