I hired Norpro to do a total rehab of my kitchen and bathroom (down to the studs) as well as other significant work including rewiring the entire unit about 4 years ago. The latest problem I've had and the final straw leading to this review is problems with the tile in the bathroom shower. I had subway tile installed with thin grout lines. The grout has begun to fall out from between the tiles. It can be scraped away with a fingernail and feels like soft chalk in some areas. 4 years may sound long to be waiting to complain but grout should last 15 to 20 years or more easily if done properly. The floor tile they put in for the kitchen and the rest of the bathroom has been fine. I called them about the grout issue and they did come out to inspect it. I was told that the grout that hadn't fallen out yet was "fine". He offered to patch the missing grout if I had any left (after 4 years - grout more than a year old should never be used I learned from research) but he was not a tiler. He looked for reasons to blame me or the materials I bought based on what they recommended) and took no responsibility for the problem or for fixing it properly. Based on talking to several other sources and online research, problems could be improperly mixing the grout, poor preparation of the area before grout was applied or having the tiles set too closely together (they did not use spacers and the spacing in the bad areas is noticeably thinner then much of the rest of the areas). Some of the other problems included having to replace a transformer for my undercabinet lights because they installed one that was undersized causing it to fail. I had to attach all the electrical cabling they used that was in the basement because they left it sitting on top of the drop ceiling. Several repairs have been needed for the "tape and mud" job they did. The kitchen cabinets had multiple dings and dents from their installation. They were not the low bidder. I relied on other reviews but I'm extremely disappointed with the quality of their work and their willingness to correct mistakes they made. We didn't really have any set idea on what we wanted done, so we let contractors give us their best ideas. After interviewing a few contractors and realizing the pricing that I was getting back was over our budget, I went on Yelp and found Norpro. Mihai and his team turned my out of date bathroom into a great modern bathroom. Although Norpro does not provide direct design assistance, all of the vendors that he suggested turned out to be great. I would highly recommend Norpro if you are looking to renovate your bathroom. With the money that we ended up saving we actually did a little remodeling of our second bathroom, kitchen and some misc. painting around our place as well. Just know that your project will be much more successful with Norpro if you have a clear idea of what you want. We used houzz.com to come up with some ideas on how we wanted our renovated space to look. What can I say - Norm and his crew were awesome! Many of his guys have worked with him for over 15 years, and really LIKE working with him, so you know they are a good team. We had to redo 90% of our master bathroom because there had been so much damage from leakage in our shower. The only things staying the same were the sink and toilet. The original developer installed the shower floor very badly -- cheap materials, no pitch on the threshold, and a bad seal around our shower drain. We had to replace much of the flooring underneath the shower and some of the ceiling in the room below. The tile was so damaged from constant leakage that we opted to retile the entire shower and bathroom floor. We found NorPro online and they came to the rescue. With Mihai as our GC we had, quite simply, a perfect experience with NorPro: zero negatives and many positives. Mihai couldn't have been easier to work with. He communicates extremely clearly, which matters a lot, especially when, as in our case, there are some complicated details involved. But communicating clearly is one thing; being responsive is another, and Mihai did both. He was quick to answer email as well as text messages whenever we had questions or concerns. We had a quote within 24 hours of our first meeting with Mihai, and when we needed to make some changes, he followed up with a revised quote, again within 24 hours. Also, after construction began, when some major noise issues arose because of our bathroom location very close to our neighbors' bedroom, Mihai was very responsive to our request to give us advance notice for the noisier parts of the project so that we could in turn give our neighbors a heads up the day before (Mihai's subcontractors were also very respectful about starting any such jobs during regular business hours). We were beyond impressed with everyone Mihai hired: a tile installer, a plumber, a carpenter, a glass door specialist, and a painter, along with their assistants. The subcontractors were uniformly polite and friendly, happy to answer questions if they came up and quick to consult where decisions were required. We also felt completely comfortable with any of them in our house while we were there and while we were away. In fact, we ended up needing to have about half the work done while we were abroad for a week, and we were proven right in our complete trust of Mihai and all of his crew. I do want to give an extra shout-out to Mihai's tile installer, Marian. We are so happy with the results of his work! We opted for porcelain tiles to replace the slate originally installed by the developer, partly for looks but mostly because it promises to be less prone to leakage and less susceptible to erosion. Marian did a truly beautiful job with the materials and the challenging designs we asked him to work with. Finally, NorPro was 100% on time at every stage of the project, which is rare, as I'm sure most readers of this website know. There were also no surprise charges at the end of the project. We paid exactly what we were quoted. With these two achievements, combined with their brilliant repair and installation work overall, NorPro hit the trifecta for us. I recently hired Norpro for a fairly big job -- completely remodeling three circa 1980s bathrooms, painting practically my entire townhouse, and tearing out some closets in the basement and adding electrical down there. Norpro went above and beyond my expectations. As a fairly new homeowner who has never tackled any sort of remodeling, I didn't know what to expect. However, Norm and his crew made everything very easy. If you want, he will recommend suppliers for tile, fixtures, vanities, vanity tops, etc., and (bonus) pass along his contractor's discount for purchases from there, and (bigger bonus) pick up everything from the supplier and bring it to your house. Of course you can pick things out from wherever you want, but for someone like me who didn't want to be scrambling all over the place and dealing with deliveries, this was the way to go. Additionally, the attention to detail is exquisite. I cannot even relay in words how beautiful the tilework in my bathrooms is. Every cut is absolutely perfect, and the stone is laid beautifully. In my basement, you would never know that two odd shaped closets used to be there. Altogether, they did stunning work. Norm is very easy to get a hold of, and answered all of my questions promptly. We used a lockbox on my doorknob with the key inside (all of this work took weeks) so I could go about my business and not have to worry about being there to let someone in. I was very disappointed with my experience with Norpro. I have two outdated bathrooms that I would like to freshen up and their websites says, "Whether you want a complete or partial bathroom remodel, we would be happy to help." Apparently, they have a pretty high threshold on what a "partial remodel" is. I sent an email detailing exactly what I need done and asking if that would be something they could do. No one responded to my email, so I called and left a message, again saying it was a bathroom remodel. I got a call back about my kitchen remodel (?) before having the bathroom expert call me back. I need to remove and replace the floor tile (another specialty, according to the website) remove and replace all the fixtures, and do some electrical work to get my 50's era bathroom integrated lighting mirror safely into this century. All of this is required twice. It ends up two sort of small-medium jobs that together make a decent medium-sized job. Or so I thought. Mihai came to my home and said, "well, I'm not going to say I refuse to do it but . . . " and then told me that only a gut job would be worth his time. Then he tried to hard-sell me on Sir Grout, not just telling to find a grout company, specifically Sir Grout. I reminded him that I needed plumbing and electrical, not just grout work. He told me I should find a company that could all that. Um . . . isn't Norpro a company that does all that? After all that, he never even sent me a quote. He just really wanted me to call Sir Grout. (I did, just to see if they could help, and they were also very insistent on knowing who referred me. I used Norpro three years ago for a dry bar in my family room. Did a great job. Hired them again to soundproof a wall in my bedroom - didn't work. Not only did the soundproofing not work, but when I tried to contact the owner, Norm, directly, he ignored me. Since early March, I have called his office no fewer than 10 times. I received a call or two back from his assistant, who "assured" me that Norm would return my call. It's mid-May and I have yet to hear from him. As the owner of the business, I'd think he'd value his customers a little more. Very disappointed and will NOT be using them again - there are way too many contractors in this town to put up with this horrible customer service. We hired Norpro to do a gut remodel of a bathroom, and to re-tile the fireplace surround in our living room. We have been through a number of remodeling projects over the years, and this was one of the best experiences we have ever had with a contractor. Norm Persky is extremely responsive, professional and attentive to detail. He virtually always answers his cell phone, which is amazing in and of itself, and he was on site every day. This project was completed on time and on budget. Norpro began the work exactly when they said they would, and despite some add-ons, the entire project from start to finish took four weeks. They did an excellent job dealing with the inevitable issues that arise with remodeling in a vintage home (ours was built in 1937). Their workmanship is beautiful, particularly the tile work and wood trim, and we are extremely happy with the finished product both in the bathroom and on the living room fireplace. The workers were highly skilled, polite, careful and kind to our two dogs. They cordoned off their work area neatly, promptly cleared away their debris, and cleaned up their mess regularly. The project was completed with a minimum of disruption to our household. We also felt that we received excellent value for the price we paid--we obtained four estimates for the bathroom remodel, and one of them was almost twice the amount of Norpro's estimate.
