Nice steak restaurant with high quality steaks/food, but I have to say, it is very overpriced…read more Chateaubriand steak (93 GBP for 600g) - This lean cut of steak was cooked to a perfect medium and pretty good. However, it was a whopping 93 GBP for 600g, which is meant to share between 2 people, but still not that much (refer to my pic). This is simply just too high of a price for this. Bone marrow and onions (12 GBP) - This was surprisingly good. Although the marrow itself didn't have much of a flavor, it was a nice buttery consistency to spread on the bread. The onions were cooked very well. Sticky Toffee Pudding (9.50 GBP) - This was more of a bread like dessert than a pudding, but was tasty and not overly sweet despite the toffee (which is good). The staff are very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The service speed is pretty quick. The interior is decorated in a nice yet not too pretentious steakhouse style. There were still plenty of open tables available on a Sunday night. Overall, while the steak and food are very good, the steak is simply too overpriced to justify me getting it again. Maybe worth trying once but not twice. I would potentially come back for the other menu options though.

The playing/presentation was also a bit mediocre for the price level. Cocktails were good. Overall, a solid experience but not one that blew my mind for the reputation of this place.

We are staying here at the counting house, but this review is about our dinner…read more We had dinner at the counting house for the last night of our London leg of our trip. I just have to say in general, everyone at this hotel and pub are just extraordinarily friendly and helpful. I'm not that familiar with pub culture and apparently the way it works is that you have to go up to the bar to order your food. I asked the hostess about it and she said that if we want a waitress there is an added service charge. We were on three walking tours that day and we're exhausted so I didn't care about paying the service charge. We started off with Yorkshire, puddings and gravy. I'm from the US. I don't usually get to have a Yorkshire pudding so I wanted to try it. It's kind of like a popover with gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was okay but the gravy was delicious. I saved the gravy and used it for the next part of my meal. We both had fish and chips. Unlike the US when I ask for malt vinegar, they know what it was and had it right away. I can't tell you how often in the US I'm giving red vinegar. The the fish and chips were spectacular. The fish was crispy even after sprinkling on the vinegar. The fries were very nice. Not as good as blacklock but very nice. And I am fry snob. My wife ordered sticky toffee pudding for dessert. I couldn't even finish my fries, so I passed. Overall a very nice meal and perfect for us as we were exhausted from walking all day and only had to go upstairs to our room afterwards.

The Horse & Groom is a cool little pub on Curtain Road just down from the Old Blue Last,…read moreIt has a warm and relaxed atmosphere, some nice chesterfield sofas and a few fabulous ornate gold frames on the walls. The clientele is a mix of city workers and Hoxton trendies, although not so much of the latter. The nearest tube station is Liverpool Street. They show Sky Sports and have fruit machines and quiz machines which are quite fun. They also have karaoke and some friends booked the place for a private party last Christmas fort 35 people. There is also a space for bands to play, the last time I saw a gig here I remember having some very weird and wonderful conversations with some random people who decided to sit next to us.

All the hip bars are now dull, and all the dull bars are hip. The decor has changed a bit. From an old man pub, to a bit more funky. They have a really old record player in the far end of the corner which impressed me. They know have a large upstairs area full of neighbourhood young drinks. Love it! I fit right in. Just a warning: I had my wallet stolen the other night, right out of my bag. So pick pocks operate in that bar! They took my monkey wallet! sniff sniff. And my subway card. I had 2 subs worth on it.

Oh yeah! Americans…read morefrom California here. Who would've known that mashed potatoes, sausages, and gravy would go so well together! Loved every bite. Got the gravy on the side, didn't think I'd use all of it, before I knew it, it was all gone. And you wouldn't think that the type of mash or type of gravy or type of sausage would matter that much, but they really do all have distinct flavors! I will be mixing mustard into my mashed potatoes from now on. Originally came for the sticky toffee pudding, so of course we ended with that. Marvelous! The toffee sauce is so comforting and rich, the cake was so moist, and it was perfectly balanced with the ice cream. Didn't detect any dates, maybe they were too finely chopped. Also the apple and blackberry crumble just didn't hit the same; it was slightly dry and on the sour side (maybe don't take a bite directly after the pudding!) Service was so helpful and friendly; I'm sure they love watching people fall in love with their food. Quick with refills and offered extra condiments if needed. Great air conditioning as well (always a plus), and I loved the green blacksplash and blackboard caligraphy on the walls as well. Bangin'

Ultimate London comfort food!…read more On a Saturday night around 7:30PM, the wait for a party of five was 45 minutes. The food was well worth the wait. The Steak and Blackheart Stout Pie was delicious. The steak was tender and the mash was smooth. Definitely get the Sticky Toffee Pudding. The pudding was sweet, soft, and warm, pairing perfectly with the silky pudding and cold vanilla ice cream.
