I discovered Nopalito's many years ago. It's in East Sacramento in the same shopping center that The Beat used to be in for years. I loved the food there, but the hours they were open were limited to breakfast and lunch M-F. It just wasn't all that convenient to get there. Fast forward to recently walking with friends around McKinley Park and us wanting lunch afterwards. We went to Nopalito's. I was surprised that neither of my friends had heard of it. ( Boy, were they in for a pleasant surprise.) I ordered the spicy pork quesadilla. My friends ordered various taco plates. We took our numbers to an outside table to sit as we had our well-behaved dog with us. The plates came out quickly. Since we all had skipped breakfast and we're hungry, this was welcome. Then I noticed the hours posted. They were now open until 8pm! I'm going to be eating here more often, now! Usually, I hate it when people say that, but here it's the truth: I've never had a bad meal; everything I've tried has been the best. This place is confusing. We went in for the first time. The guy at the front desk hands us menus, tells us to sit anywhere. We grab the menus, coffee, sit down and wait to order. No one comes to take our order they just keep passing us by. By watching other people, we figure it out, you have to order at the front desk so I ordered and then the guy tells me he doesn't take card only cash or check... So I asked him where his ATM was and he said he didn't have one ?!?! He said I have to walk to the liquor store. I was so irritated, I go to the liquor store a block away, come back, my coffe is cold and my food is sitting on the table . Amazing quality food. This place is cash only and you order at the counter then choose a seat. I went for breakfast today and split the little cactus plate and machaca breakfast burrito. Great place for authentic Mexican food! We got the machaca and the breakfast burrito with their signature stewed beef. Both were solid! I think the beef isn't a normal breakfast meat to choose but it was really flavorful. The machaca was also great - soft and no porky smell. The free salsa bar was great. Their menu can be a little challenging, since they don't have their full menu in a viewable area - some items are written on a chalkboard overhanging the counter, while a lot of the items are just on a laminated paper that you can't view until it's your turn to order. I recommend reading the menu online, but this also has some downfalls as the prices for the items (and any add-ons, like sauces) are not displayed online. However, the descriptions are good for getting an idea of what you'd like to order. If you something off their breakfast menu, come before 12pm. I ordered their Breakfast Burrito with Chile Verde - flavorful and filling! They have a self-serve salsa bar & water. Adding some of the salsa on the burrito made it even more delicious! They have a shared parking lot, but if that's full, there's street parking. Good service. Cute, cohesive decor throughout the restaurant as well. Cute spot! I got their carnitas burrito and my husband got their chorizo breakfast burrito. Both were HUGE portions! It was great since we had leftovers but you can easily split one burrito between two people. Both had great favor and didn't skimp out on anything. We went on a Saturday morning and it was pretty busy but the food came out quick. It is cash only so just keep that in mind! It's in a strip mall so there is a small parking lot but majority of the parking is street. Definitely recommend this place! Very cute. read more

**Cash only** We were heading elsewhere and drove by this spot. We did a Google search and saw that the reviews were good and the price was right. We arrived Saturday morning at about 930 and it was kinda busy. By the time we got our food and started eating, it was standing room only and the line was out the door. Clearly, this is the place to be! The menu is fantastic and it's hard to make choices when there are so many great options. I definitely need to come back for lunch or dinner. I ordered the special. Beef hash and eggs. The beef was okay and the rest was exceptional. Great flavors in the sauce, fresh warm tortillas and the eggs cooked perfectly. Service was great and despite how busy they were, the manager (maybe the owner?) was hustling around to fill coffee cups, check on guests and clean up as folks left. This looks like it's probably a pretty good place. A lot of people in here manual looks decent. The only problem was after sitting down ordering is finding out that they only take cash or checks, which is not really a modern way of doing business and I can see how it can hurt them because most people don't write checks anymore or carry cash with them, including me, but I wish them luck. One of those times where the taste of the food is so good I can't wait to come back and I don't care about any piddly things like cramped space inside or cash only not evident until you walk inside. This was served with chips, which I did not know, and ordered guac and chips as well. Oopsie. Their guacamole is also delicious, with chunks of onion and tomato, just how I like it. Nobody does guacamole better than my love, but theirs is the closest I've tasted in awhile. Even the chips were fresh and tasty. There were zero weak points with this delicious food. Everyone who works here is unbelievably nice. They even knew exactly where to send us for the closest ATM (Metro Food and Liquor, H & 54th). Friday night on 1/16, I headed to Fremont church on Carlson Drive, to watch my grandson play in a basketball game at 6 pm that night. Before I left, I checked to see what time Nopalitos closed, as I wanted to pick up dinner on the way home. It said they'd be open until 8:30. The game ended a few minutes before 7, so I headed right over, and arrived at the restaurant in less than 5 min from the church. The "Open" sign was on and blinking like they do, and as I walked up to the door, I could see a few people sitting at a table. I pulled the door to open it, and it was locked. A server gave me a quick look, then looked away, and kept walking. I then knocked on the door, and saw a person look up from the kitchen, then turn away. Seriously? One of you could have come over, and just said there was a family emergency, or even that you were closing early that night. You should have turned off the Open sign if you knew you were closing early. But you just ignored me. I'm sure I wasn't the last person to stop by that night. 0 Stars read more

This friendly fresh food restaurant is my favorite in Sacramento. The foods that I've had were made from scratch (and never were deep fried). Although the tortillas are not homemade they are steamed to perfection and taste sweet. I am eating the breakfast eggs scrambled with cactus. There's a tiny bit of heat which gives complexity of flavor. The country potatoes are off the charts. So happy! The restaurant is clean and comfortable. Thanks Nopalitos! Breakfast burrito was mid. I've had a better $4 breakfast burrito before and these here cost me $14 and I bought two. My daughter took two bites of hers and threw it away. I finished mine so it obviously wasn't horrible but the price point for machaca was ridiculous. I wouldn't come back but as far as service goes, they were nice and pleasant. The ambiance gave a nice, quant, locals vibe but maybe upper class locals because there's no way I could justify paying for these over priced burritos again that were barely made the mark of being considered tasty. read more

We have not been here since the ownership change. So how is the food? We ordered the following: 1) tamale bowl with chili verde: good, but the polenta was just a tad cold and there were just 3 small pieces of pork. But the taste was fine. 2) breakfast bacon burrito: this burrito was actually very tasty. crisp pieces of bacon, eggs, potatoes, peppers. Although smaller in size than other breakfast burritos around town, it was definitely more flavorful than others.
