There's quite a few Chinese restaurants in the area, but Noodle King's combination of quality, value, and location has made it the It's-A-Weekday-And-Don't-Want-To-Cook regular in my family for over a decade. The service is good and friendly, but the main attraction is the food. Not everything on the menu is great, but their non-Cantonese items are decent and their Cantonese specialties are very good. If your typical fare is the Americanized-Chinese stuff, I'd encourage you to explore past that. For individual dishes, I like the Pan Fried Noodles the most, but really, all the noodles are good. If you're going family style and sharing dishes, my favorite is the HK Style Sole Filet. read more

We're back in Maryland for the holidays and our first stop was Noodle King. Unfortunately, we were not as impressed this time as we were previously, though it was still above average Chinese food. I was quite disappointed that the 两面黄 (pan fried) noodles I raved about in my original review were very bland and therefore, not very tasty. Sad!! In general, I noticed a big problem with consistency this time at Noodle King. There were several things that highlighted the inconsistency: 1) Portion size - We ordered one round of dishes, were still hungry, and reordered 2 of our favorite dishes--the 豆苗 (snow pea pod stems) and the 香干肉丝 (shredded pork with dried bean curd). The second portions were a different size than the first portions. 2) Flavor - I already commented on the blandness of the 两面黄 noodles but another one of our favorites, the 避风塘鱼片 (Hong Kong style sole filet) had almost no sauce on it. Meanwhile, on our way out of the restaurant, we walked by another table with the same dish and theirs was nice and saucy! Another flavor inconsistency was with our two orders of the shredded pork with dried bean curd. The second order of it was a little charred and smoky in flavor. Both portions of the snow pea pod stems were fantastic though! Next time, I'll make sure to get the names of those dishes as listed on the menu and some photos! [Update!] We returned a couple days later for Christmas day lunch, since they were one of few restaurants open. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. One of my boyfriend's customers told him about this place and how she moved away and still visits noodle king when she gets the chance. She ripped and raved about it like it was such amazing food so my boyfriend and I came up with the idea to visit the other day. We arrived at about 7 45. They close at 9 PM when we get there we walk in and they're like dine in or order takeout and we told them that we wanted to dine in. They asked us if we wanted some hot tea we declined it. we asked for two waters, and she gave it to us and then we asked her for a plate of lemons and two straws they had neither. We didn't even bother touching the water. We looked at the menu and we decided that we wanted to order spring rolls, eggrolls, and crab Rangoon's. The crab wonton's were average as it doesn't take much to make a crab wonton taste good. It had its normal cheese and imitation crab along with the duck sauce on the side, the spring rolls and egg-rolls however, we're awful. Not fresh at all. They tasted as if the filling have been frozen before and thawed out and then stuffed into an egg roll and fried. It was so nasty that they tasted really old. My boyfriend ordered fried tofu and black mushroom sauce. It came with some bakchoy and a side of rice a very small side of rice. I ordered orange chicken, and it came with pieces of broccoli, and a very small side of rice as well. Let's just say that I will never ever in my entire life go to this place ever again. Our food came out way too quick and it didn't taste fresh. The orange chicken tasted like absolutely nothing and the orange sauce had no flavor. It just tasted like sauce. They didn't even bother putting MSG in the orange. My boyfriend's fried tofu was the right consistency but the sauce also tasted like absolutely nothing. There was no flavor whatsoever. There was nothing desirable about this place. We will never be going there again. I don't know who y'all be lying to when y'all leave these reviews talking about the food is good because it's not. We ordered take out from here several weeks ago and were so pleased with the delicious food. The meat dumplings were so fresh and high quality. The egg rolls were substantial and flavorful. The chicken fried rice was really generous and full of lots of flavor and chicken. The tofu and vegetables were also really tasty, and very generous portion size. The amount of food we got was pretty crazy for just two people but it left several meals for leftovers which was great. Prices are reasonable especially for the portion size. Can't believe Noodle King is only cranking 3.5 stars on yelp. I am a regular here. I eat here so often you would think my mom (who's a pretty great chef) worked here. Nope, but she is great friends with the owners. We're practically family. When Noodle King got taken over by the Xu family my taste buds reached a new height. Cantonese food at it's finest when at their best. While I am giving Noodle King 5 stars this does not mean it is perfect. Due to the high turnover rate of the chefs some inconsistencies in the dishes may occur from time to time, but Winnie the boss lady who is usually waiting tables will take care of you if you let her know of any issues. Ling the tall slender gal with better English who usually only works weekdays is also very helpful too. Some tips: 1) Items that are not on the menu can be made upon request as long as the ingredients are available. Some dishes you won't find on the menu are Beef brisket and sun chokes casserole and leek flower sauteed with salty fish. 2) If you order the Beef brisket and sun chokes casserole they most likely won't know what it is if ordered in English. Pull out your phone and show them a picture of sun chokes. And while I like this dish I prefer and recommend the Beef brisket and turnip/radish casserole much more. 3) Be adventurous and try their non-Chinese items. They have pretty good Pad Thai and Malaysian noodles. 4) Also try their specials written on the white board! Lamb and bean curd skin casserole, Salt and pepper tofu, leek flower and fish fillets, and sigua (like asian zucchini) with fish fillets in XO sauce are among my favorites. 5) Quality may go down when the business is busy. They get super busy at regular dinner times during the weekend. 6) However, it is also on weekends when meals come with the complimentary honeydew flavored taro tapioca dessert (I love this and I don't care if the quality of service goes down) I am so familiar with the place that often patrons will think I work there. So, I help to serve other patrons as I saunter in the kitchen and scoop my own rice for the table. When they are busy I help out by serving my table water too. I don't mind because it's like helping family out. 7) They take reservations for large parties. 8) They deliver and you can order via their website! Check for coupons on the site before ordering, or order online. 9) The cute boy who works on the weekends is the owners' son Lytton (alert: jail bait) plus he has a girlfriend already Update: 10) If you don't have to order take-out/delivery definitely opt for eating in the restaurant. I went over to check them out because of the high ratings in recent reviews, and was not disappointed. The restaurant is tucked away behind a deli/wine and beer shop in a stretch of road that is mostly residential. It's a pretty spare space, two small rooms with a bit of calligraphy on the walls and a lot of potted.plants. The menu covers a lot of ground, Hong Kong specialties, a few other Asian noodle dishes like Pad Thai, and the usual Chinese-American cliches. I suspect the latter don't get much action, as I was the only round eye in the room. In a gesture of traditional hospitality, hot tea arrived along with the menu, a medium bodied black. I ordered hot and sour soup, my favorite test of whether the cook is paying attention to details even in everyday preparations. It was quite good, with moderate heat, enough sour to notice but not overwhelm, rich broth, and sufficient solids. It was not thickened as much as most - maybe that's the way real Chinese do it. My main course was Malaysian Style Kwan Teu, a serendipitous fusion of pan fried wide rice noodles (chow foon), shrimp and chicken, bean sprouts and onions (Pad Thai), and a curry-like seasoning (Singapore noodles but about a quarter of the intensity). Delicious, and such a generous serving that I had to take some home. $12.46, tax included. I was very happy, not quite thrilled enough to get to the elusive fifth star. Unexpected gem in northern Silver Spring. Authentic and delicious cantonese restaurant! Here is what I highly recommend: 1) Peking duck - "one of the best I've ever had." Seriously delicious and beautifully spiced duck. Unbelievably good! 2) Lamb brisket casserole - phenomenal flavors; similar to beef brisket casserole. We added black mushrooms and it was perfect! I also recommend their beef brisket noodle soup, seafood over fried noodles (not the best I've had, but very good), wonton soup (not the best wontons and the soup was a little salty, but dining partner loves it!). Their service was good! Super friendly & fast. They also have your standard lunch deals. I'm very impressed with the quality and authenticity here. Ordered a few things: egg drop soup, orange chicken and wonderful chicken for pick up. I was 10 minutes til I could pick up and true enough it was ready. The restaurant itself is small, nothing overly fancy or exciting. But they do have several awards adorning the wall that said they were the one of the best Chinese restaurants in the US in whatever year. The food it's self was pretty good. And it was all still warm when I got back home. The egg drop soup I thought could use a hair more salt but was good. The orange chicken actually tasted like real oranges rather then just orange flavoring. And the wonderful chicken really is wonderful. My mom is part of a hiking club which is basically an elaborate excuse for middle-aged women to scout Chinese restaurants in the DC metro area and pass it off as "exercise." They recently stumbled upon this strange gem. The Noodle King menu epitomizes Pan-Asian cuisine. Their dishes range from Chinese to Taiwanese to Thai to the vaguely Viet, Malaysian, and Indonesian (sorry, no sushi here). The authenticity only shines with the Chinese/Taiwanese offerings - can't say the same for everything else below the Mekong - but deliciousness is pretty consistent across the board. The standouts are the more exotic sounding dishes. They have these braised organic chicken dishes that have a more complex taste and interesting texture (albeit less meat) than your run of the mill chickens. I could probably devote 500 words to the textural subtleties of various types of chickens, but I won't. Also there was this weird beef dish that came in little fried cubes with this intensely flavored coating. I can't remember the name in either Chinese or English. But the menu has pictures for people like me, so that helps. The restaurant itself looks like a temporary hut and the interior dining room looks like a nursing home cafeteria. But service is attentive and management is warm. I would say "just get delivery," but the waitresses gotta feed their families too, y'know? I just wish some of these restaurants would move to DC, or I dunno, Chinatown. Call me crazy. read more

I had really high expectation for Noodle King based on the Yelp reviews, and frankly because I just love noodles and the the type of dishes they offer. Don't let the outside appearance fool you, inside sits a clean restaurant that offers an impressive number of authentic and Americanized dishes. Our table ordered a bunch of items: twin lobster, fish casserole, beef brisket casserole, brisket noodle soup, fish/bitter radish soup, and intestine with bitter radish (and black bean). We all agreed the taste was just short across all the dishes, meaning if the chef elected to cook the dishes a little bit longer and allow the savory sauces/juice to get inside the meat, radish, lobster, fish, this would have been a 5 star review. While the first bite tastes great, the second bite and beyond makes you want to go to the kitchen, slap the chef a little bit, and have the dishes a few minutes longer on the wok. Given it's a bit of a drive from Gaithersburg (unless you take 200), we probably won't come back anytime soon. It's really unfortunate given the hype and the wonderful availability of dishes on the menu. read more

I really enjoyed my dinner at Noodle King. I came here on a Sunday evening around 8pm. The space is small and they have a counter at the front if you want to order carryout. They also have a tv mounted on the wall. Once Upon a Time (ABC) was playing in the background when I was there and they had the closed captioning on. Now onto the food: The crab wontons (aka crab Rangoons) were a little more brown than I'm used to, but still tasted delicious and had a good crunch. Sometimes the Rangoons I've had at other places are golden brown but soggy. These were noticeably a darker brown but the perfect texture. The rangoons are served with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. I tasted the egg drop soup and fried calamari, shrimp, and scallops. The egg drop soup and fried noodles were the best that I've had in a while. The fried calamari et al. was well seasoned and also had a good crunch. I also tried the beef chow fun which was okay. The beef was tender but the chow fun and Chinese broccoli could've used more sauce/flavor. For my main dish, I ordered the Peking Duck (half) which cost about $15. Normally when I get Peking duck, it's for a special occasion and you have to order it in advance. That's not the case here - you can order it on the fly! Despite ordering it late at night, when it's highly likely to have been sitting out a while, the dish was still of high quality (and affordable, too). The Peking duck was served with buns instead of the pancake that I'm used to, but I love my carbs so the buns are good too. The skin wasn't crispy but the duck was moist and tender. Paired with hoisin and the green onions - it doesn't get any better than that. I'd definitely come back and order it again. Service was both average and above average. When we first arrived, we were seated immediately (but it wasn't crowded - there were about two other tables filled) and they brought a pot of hot tea to the table. I'm not a tea drinker, so I ordered a cup of water when we placed our orders. The waiter had to be reminded later that a few of us at the table wanted water, but once we asked the second time, it was brought out right away. There were never any water refills though, and I'm a thirsty gal :(. The food was brought out in a steady flow - for the most part the dishes are eaten family-style, excluding the soups and noodle bowls. After all of our food was brought out, the waiter basically disappeared until the end of the meal, when he came back and brought out a complimentary tapioca dessert soup - great hospitality! While the waiter wasn't super attentive, the owner came out to check on us to see if we needed anything. She even came out later to help pack up our leftovers - quality service from the upper management! This is my new go-to place for when I'm craving Cantonese food. The staff is awesome and the food is delicious. Check out the items on the white board as those are the specials! One of my favorites is the "Before Time Fish Filet", which is lightly fried fish filet topped with a dry sauce made of ground pork. YUM! You can't go wrong with the salt/pepper calamari, shrimp, or tofu. When it's in season, get the beef brisket with mountain yam (wai san). Also, the lamb pot casserole is really good too. I was pleasantly surprised by their Singapore rice noodles as I don't normally like them, but NK does a great job making this dish! You also can't go wrong with the beef chow fun, yu shiang eggplant or seasonal veggies with garlic. I wasn't a fan of their "American Chinese" food, such as the General Tso's chicken, but that must be why I like this place, because they do a great job with the authentic Cantonese dishes. I needed a quick delivery and wanted Asian (Rockville businesses had over an hour delivery time) so I placed my order close by at around 12:15 on a Friday which included pan-fried noodles and egg foo young for a minimal wait. It was delivered via Door Dash at 12:40 so timing was great(stars for that), however, I have had much better Chinese carryout elsewhere for much less. Since we moved to the area, we are regulars here. We always get the PAN FRIED NOODLES and another dish to try. Everything has been addictively good, with the exception of the "wonderful chicken". If this is your first visit, try the pan fried noodles or a noodle soup. Also delish is the Chinese broccoli, cod with veggies, shrimp toast, kung pao tofu, tofu stuffed with shrimp. One thing to note: veggies they use in the dishes can vary, and so does portion size. read more
