We came to Nonnina for dinner before attending a show in the Loop. For our starter, we went with the octopus which was fantastic. It had a little bit of a kick and the peppers were a nice touch. For my main, I went with the lasagna. It was delicious and a good portion size as well. My girlfriend got the gluten-free short rib pasta. I had a bite of it when she got too full and it was absolutely fantastic. The staff were very accommodating of her celiac and able to ensure she enjoyed a safe and delicious meal. I also got a couple espresso martinis which really hit the spot and made sure I could stay awake for the entire show.
With only a few hours left before heading to the airport, we stopped into Nonnina on N Clark St., and it ended up being the perfect send-off to our Chicago trip. [[HIGHLIGHT]]From the moment we sat down, the atmosphere felt warm and inviting, with beautiful decor that struck a nice balance between cozy and polished.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We kept it classic with a Caesar salad, carbonara, and penne alla vodka, and every dish delivered. The Caesar was crisp and well balanced, the carbonara was rich and comforting without feeling too heavy, and the penne alla vodka was easily a standout. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. The location is also a big plus, especially if you're exploring downtown or squeezing in one last meal before heading out. Overall, Nonnina felt like one of those reliable spots that still manages to feel special. A great final stop and one I'd absolutely come back to.
[[HIGHLIGHT]]Cozy place and nice holiday decorations![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got the special Bruschetta alla Caprese to start and it was delicious! The whipped pesto ricotta was SO good. We got three pasta dishes and tried them all. The pasta noodles were fresh. Tough to pick a favorite as they were pretty different. They were all good but can't say any were amazing. The server was hard to hear and understand.
Not bad but could be better. The oysters were good but poorly shucked. Don't get a table under a music speaker, although the music was very eclectic! My Carbonara was very thick and gummy but had good flavor. My wife's truffle Bucatini was ok. The surprise was the gelato which also had a gummy consistency. The service was good and they have valet parking.
First - a huge shoutout and THANK YOU to the staff who let us keep our reservation despite our train arriving to the city 30 minutes behind schedule due to slippery tracks. We called ahead and explained the situation as it was my friend's birthday and we didn't want to miss out on our dinner - they were very accommodating and seated us at 8:15 for a 7:45 reservation. The restaurant was dimly lit and cozy on a cold, rainy night, but I'd love to go back when the patio is opened up to let in a nice breeze and lots of sunlight. Onto the actual dinner - 1000000/10. We had artichokes for an appetizer (plus the delicious focaccia table bread) before our pasta entrees. Everything came out timely and our server was very attentive, including making some wine recommendations to go along with our meals. There were 2 vegetarians in the mix and we still felt like we had a good amount of options on the menu. Highly recommend for a delicious italian dinner that won't break the bank!
What a great spot for a late night hang out or a date night! I loved the lighting and the ambience here. It was very intimate yet fun. When I went, they didn't have any tables available, but my friend and I were able to snag a spot at the bar which I honestly loved. I got the burger and fries and my friend got pasta. She loved the pasta and her drink. I did enjoy my burger and fries, but I do wish the burger had a little bit more flavor. Still a good eat, but yeah, I just wish it had more seasoning. they had the Indiana versus UIUC football game on. The staff behind the bar were really kind and attentive. I have definitely added this place to my list of restaurants to go back to.
went here on a Saturday night and was able to get a table right away if we were okay to be seated outside (we were). The tables were really low we noticed, we were sat at the side of the restaurant not the front. Service was pretty nice. Overall I thought all of the food was just okay and I wasn't impressed. None of the dishes stood out to me.the vodka pasta was very creamy but just a bit basic to be. The pappardelle was alright and the squid Ink just tasted like lots of things I liked but not sure it mixed well together. Overall alright but probs wouldn't intentionally go back. I did see that they have an "optional" service charge which I think was a bit weird and that was kind of tucked away and small on the bill which I think it's a bit weird and not obvious to the customer.
I'd been eyeing Nonnina for its daily happy hour menu since arriving in Chicago, but unfortunately didn't get a chance to venture in until the end of the week for regular dinner service. Located just across the street from The Westin and within walking distance from multiple hotels, its location is prime for a convenient dinner. Happy hour is served at the bar, regular dinner service on the enclosed patio and dining room. Decor is cozy and floral, and service was uncomplicated. Table bread: My least favorite part of the meal. I've always been of the opinion it's hard to mess up complimentary bread. I was disappointed to find the white loaf dry and dense without any discernible flavor. A healthy dash of kosher salt would've been most welcome. The focaccia was better, though underseasoned as well. The balsamic and olive oil provided on each table was welcome. If the bread were slightly toasted and the white loaf changed out, it would be a significant plus as an introduction to Nonnina dining. Beet and orange salad: Love the pairing of citrus and beets. The red and golden beets were roasted nicely, and the slivers of orange and grapefruit complemented the earthiness of the beets. There were two small droppers of balsamic and olive oil, which weren't quite enough for the salad, so I supplemented with the bottles provided on the tables. Chicken piccata: Enjoyed the tangy creamy sauce of this chicken piccata. I usually find capers to be too salty, but this version created a nice balance with the lemon. The sautéed spinach was a nice touch, but I felt like it soaked up way too much of the sauce and ended up being overly sour and salty at the same time. Everything rested on a bed of fingerling potatoes, some of which were perfectly crispy and others overfried and soggy. Linguini al Nero: I love squid ink pasta, and this wasn't a bad rendition. The lobster, shrimp, and calamari portion was generous, and there was a nice balance of tomato with seafood. I couldn't really taste the squid ink in the pasta, though the appearance itself was of lovely inky strands. Nonnina didn't quite live up to expectations, but it's a good convenient option for Italian in the downtown Chicago area, especially if staying at a nearby hotel.

We also tried the chicken Parmesan, and they were kind enough to substitute my spaghetti with rigatoni alla vodka as requested. The spaghetti and meatballs were also delicious. I came here with my girl friend who is visiting on a whim on a Thursday night. There weren't any tables available, so we sat at the bar, which turned out to be perfect! We found out it was Happy Hour. The HH menu was extensive. Thursday is also half-off pizza night, and we were very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food for the price. The cocktails were yummy and the bartender was very welcoming. The atmosphere is roomy yet still feels intimate. If you want authentic Italian food...(not American Italian) but authentic Italian food, this is where you go. There are few, if any, other real places. Nonnina's is near perfection as far as AUTHENTIC Italian food goes. This has been a favorite of a dear friend of mine for years. I've been a few times, but this visit requires a stellar review. We had a classic full pranzo. My dinner companion had spent 14 years in Rome, so he knows his way around Italian cuisine. We started off with a classic Italian charcuterie board featuring excellent meats, including mortadella, salami, and prosciutto, along with some amazing cheeses. Perfect beginning to a classic pranzo or lunch. The wine selection was excellent. We next went for two pastas, a mushroom and a bolognese, which we split. The mushroom pasta is unique and well worth trying. Hardly any other Itailian restaurants off this much less make it nearly as well. It was a thick pasta cooked al dente (fusili?) and the sauce was very thick with that earthy flavor you can only get from real mushrooms. Just marvelous and impossible to order in any other Italian restaurant. The bolognese was spectacular and not overly acidic. I highly recommend. We finished off with tiramisu, which was a bit dry. I was disappointed. It was good, but a bit dry. Of course we had classic espresso, which was perfect. Then like civilized people ending a proper Italian meal, we had 2 glasses each of grappa! Ohhhh grappa! PEOPLE! If you want an authentic Italian meal, finish with GRAPPA as a digestive....NOT crappy sambuca. Sambuca is for posseurs. Here endeth the lesson, Please stand for the Creed....

At this point, I've tried five of their entrées, two of their salads, and four of their cocktails -- Nonnina can't miss. I personally think that their chicken parmesan is one of the best in the city. Both the chicken Parmesan and the rigatoni à la vodka are so good that my fiancé, who doesn't really like either of those dishes usually, kept stealing bites. I *would* also recommend the carbonara, duck pappardelle, and arugula and prosciutto pizza, but I'm convinced at this point that everything on the menu is great. The service is exceptional. Excellent pasta. Very good service. Probably the favorite meal that my wife and I had while in Chicago. We were staying in River North, so we tried to find places that were short walks with the kids. This place lived up to the reviews. We will definitely go back when the girls are interested in eating pasta again. Sigh. read more

The ambiance was really nice. I had the Chicken Piccata, but I found it to be too lemony for me. Wasn't bad though! I come back again to try something else. My gf's had the Rigatoni alla Vodka and it was delicious. The service was wonderful, and worth a stop. read more

I came into the city for lunch today with my son. We both had the prix fixe. I had the carpaccio di pera, branzino, and panna cotta. My son had the meatball, pappardelle, and bread pudding. It was honestly the best meal I've had dining out in ages. I need to plan a return visit again soon. It was my third visit here but, first in several years. Glad I chose Nonnina. read more

SO GOOD!! Kicked off restaurant week w/ a bang! We did the lunch menu, The food went super crazy. You can judge by the plates how good the food was. The service was wonderful, our server was very well mannered and even taught us some Italian words. Sooo many ppl rec the rigatoni alla vodka so I had to go try it out!! We sat in the outdoor covered patio area - the ambiance is so cute and I loved the greenery wall on the ceiling. You're started off with complimentary bread which comes with a full bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I LOVE a good pairing, so I liked that the left the bottles so I can eat as much as I want! Bread had a cheese garlic crust, a bit dry but yum regardless! The rigatoni alla vodka was incredibly al dente and actually delish!! Very saucy, bursting with flavor when you bite into the curved rigatoni that hold every slurp of sauce, and it was so creamy and rich! Also loved that they freshly shaved as much parm as I wanted. The prosciutto and arugula pizza also came with such an addicting roasted onion and garlic flavor. The mozzarella and stracciatella paired super well with the saltiness of the prosciutto and the bitter freshness of the arugula. Doesn't have truffles in the ingredients, but it kinda had hints of truffle notes? LOVED! Also got a side of roasted mushrooms - huge portion for two - very umami! You can really take your time eating here and they won't kick you out even when busy. read more

I love happy hour! Especially in this economy. It's a way to treat myself without feeling like I'm breaking the bank. Nonnina has an extensive menu with both food and drink specials and I had to get here. I had the Italian sausage and peppers and I've never seen sausage and peppers look so pretty. Such a great presentation and I loved the chili sauce on top. The grill gave the sausage a nice crispy crunch but it was still tender. I also love the amount you receive. I'm solo and def couldn't finish all of this. The oysters were so fresh and clean. Shoutout to OutKast lol but seriously. Sometimes they can be a little too briney for me, but not these. And the pickled onions and champagne mignonette was a very nice touch. Both of them had plenty of fresh finely diced veggies which added a pleasant crunch to the oysters. Like hell yeah I'll take mini pieces of cucumber! Thanks! It was also like a contrast between sour and sweet. Loved it. Then I decided I needed a vegetable because at this age, I gotta get those. I went for the Brussels and loved the caramelization and they were nice and crispy. Some of the pieces were like potato chips. They were good, but I def could've used more of that balsamic glaze on top. So naturally, I asked for more! Perfection lol And finally to drink I had the espresso martinis! $9! Can't beat it! Out-of-towners here!!!! My boyfriend and I decided to come here for dinner our first night in town. We made a reservation but instead decided to sit at a comfy red booth they had available in the bar. I ordered the the Malfade Bucatini Primi. It was so rich and delicious, the noodles were authentic and prepared al dente. My boyfriend ordered the Pork Ossobuco. The pork was fall off the bone tender and very flavorful. Of course we shared everything so we were stuffed when dinner was over with no room for dessert...sadly! They have their own oil and balsamic which was so good!!! The service was great and the ambiance is very cute in the bar and restaurant. read more

Hands down the best Italian food I had on a recent Chicago trip! We were staying nearby in the area and decided to try Nonnina since it was close-by, and I'm so glad we did. We were able to get seated immediately as a party of 3 on a Saturday around 11am. The restaurant interior is pretty large, with both a more intimate indoor section and a livelier patio section. We ate in the patio, and it was very well decorated and also well heated on a cold and windy day. Our server was very helpful in recommending dishes, since it was our first time here, and we mainly ended up following their recs. We got the prosciutto-caprese and chopped salads, squid ink spaghetti and bucatini pastas, and the prosciutto & arugula pizza. This was A LOT of food for 3 people. Everything tasted delicious! Both salads were very well dressed, but the prosciutto-caprese was more interesting flavor wise (and very well plated). Of the 2 pastas, I enjoyed the bucatini more - it had great truffle flavor, but mixed with the egg yolk the pasta felt quite heavy in my stomach. The squid ink spaghetti was yummy as well, with brighter flavors and slightly spicy. The prosciutto & arugula pizza was probably the most standard dish, but very well done, with a thin and crispy crust. There was a promotion for Mother's day when we dined here, so we were able to get a free slice of tiramisu for dessert. It tasted very authentic and was very well soaked in coffee. Very nice of them to have such an offer for mothers! Service was impeccable on our visit, all our needs were taken care of promptly and in such a friendly manner. Overall bill came out to around $160, which was pretty pricey, but seemed fair given that this is a bit more upscale place, and the food quantity & quality as well as service was amazing. I've been meaning to try this place FOREVERRRRR. Finally made it out here to try it. We stopped by for a late lunch. We ordered the burrata and Caesar salad as starters. The golden beets were so good! The burrata was creamy and pesto was nice. We wish the bread a soft bread instead of a super toasty one. The Caesar salad was whatever. The dressing tasted unflavored. The pappardelle was really good! The ragu was thick and well flavored. The noodles seem like it's fresh made. And who wouldn't love that. But my favorite was the squid ink spaghetti. The noodles were perfectly cooked. The sauce was packed full of flavors and it was big chunks of lobster. We definitely want to go back to try their other menu items. read more
My friend and I were looking for a good Happy Hour option on a Monday and we stumbled upon Nonnina and our experience was great! We ordered an espresso martini, scotch on rocks, 1 glass of wine as part of HH. My friend ordered half dozen oysters, where each oyster was just for $1. We also ordered a Margarita pizza to share. It isn't served with veggies but the server was able to add mushrooms, onions, peppers to it! Overall, our experience was great and we were able to enjoy a good meal for reasonable price. What a great experience! We were welcomed by the hostesses in the front which were jolly and upbeat. We asked to sit at the bar, which had plenty of open seating and had many TV's (for those interested in sports). The restaurant is pleasantly lit, providing just enough light to see the other party, but not giving that surgical room energy. We were promptly greeted by Blake who gave us the Happy Hour Menu (which was superb and robust). We started off with the eggplant parm off the HH menu and the portion was massive and priced at only $10. The flavors were delicious and really hit the spot. We moved on to the Rigatoni Alla Vodka which was perfectly al dente, sauced to perfection and delicious. We still felt a little hungry so we ordered the chicken parm which wowza--this one is one of the best I've had in the city. It was cheesy, thinly breaded and cooked to absolute perfection--not overly greasy or too sauced. Again, the portion size was very generous. We were in the mood for a little something sweet and Uvaldo recommended the Pumpkin Soufflé which to be honest I gave him a weird look about and said "nah", Uvaldo persuaded me to order it, telling me it was, "his favorite thing on the menu". We pressed play on this and Jesus Christ, it was DELICIOUS and probably the most beautifully played dish I've seen in Chicago. I mean flavor-wise this was 10/10. From the moment you walk in, the beautiful atmosphere and stunning decor transport you straight to Italy--warm, inviting, and effortlessly elegant. The food? Bellissimo. We started with a variety of Italian appetizers--perfectly crisp calamari, a beautifully curated charcuterie board, and a tomato, mozzarella, and balsamic board that was almost too pretty to eat (almost). They also serve warm, fresh bread with extra virgin olive oil and a balsamic glaze for dipping, which might just be the perfect start to any Italian meal. I ordered the carbonara, which came topped with a silky, runny egg that made every bite rich, creamy, and unforgettable. You can tell everything is made with care and quality ingredients. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. My mom is in town visiting and wanted Italian. We had the beer battered artichoke, I had the carbonara, and we shared a poached fruit desert. All of the dishes were super yummy. Perfectly cooked. The aioli was the perfect combo. The fresh bread was great as well. The carbonara was exactly what I was looking for. The egg yolk on top really elevated the dish. Service was fantastic. read more

Great spot with delicious Italian food! I came here with 2 friends for happy hour and sat in a booth. Happy hour tends to be insanely busy, so you need to get there quickly to snag a table. Brian the GM was super knowledgeable and gave great recommendations on what to try off the menu. We loved how the happy hour had $1 oysters throughout the weekdays! My friends and I had espresso martinis and aperol spritz and Ubaldo did a phenomenal job with our drinks and taking care of us the whole time! All of the food was amazing, but I highly recommend trying the meatballs, Fritto Misto, and their bombolinis for dessert! Service was great and ambiance is perfect for anytime of day. We came here for happy hour at around 4:30pm on a Friday afternoon. they had good drink deals, including cute little mini tinis which are a great option for someone like me who struggles to finish an entire drink by myself. The oysters were yummy and fresh and I really liked the little chopped onion bits in the vinegar and dilly sauce that they came with. The $25 Caesar salad, fries, and martini combo was also pretty good- the caesar salad was just ok but the fries were good, they were topped with parmesan and came with two dipping sauces, one that was truffley and creamy deliciousness. the eggplant appetizer was really really good, it was like fried eggplant caprese pretty much, and it was a great size. the fritto misto was also a good size and also came with two yummy sauces - one yummy marinara sauce and one more creamy sauce. obviously this restaurant really values providing different condiments and i really appreciate that lol. the only gripe i have is that although the servers and staff were all very friendly, the service was kinda slow. the restaurant was pretty full, so it's understandable, but it was pretty difficult to get the attention of any servers when we needed more water or wanted to order more oysters, and that was a bit annoying. overall though, this was a pretty great and fairly economical happy hour deal for this nice restaurant, and i'd totally come back. read more
Wishing the food was as good as the decor. Nonnina is a nice restaurant. It truly is beautiful inside. The tables are packed in pretty tight, but no too tight. They definitely don't let any square footage go to waste. For my main, I ordered the Orecchiette (Spinach Pasta, Broccolini, Prosciutto, House-Made Sausage, Chili Flakes, Pecorino, Lemon Bread Crumbs). It was good, but to be more specific, it was average. This is why I mentioned the decor of the restaurant. I expected to be blown away by the food. I was surprised that it was just okay. During this visit, I was with a table of seven. Throughout and after our mains, many of us had the same opinion on multiple different entree's. The general consensus was that it was just okay. I did share a Tiramisu and that was pretty spectacular. Service over all was good. No-nonsense and got us what we needed, when we needed it. Would I go back? The short answer is no, but I wouldn't want to discourage people from trying it out. Chicago is tricky in that there is an abundance of restaurants to get great food representing numerous cuisines. The competition is heavy and you really need to stand out and impress to capture that repeat business. Of course, this is merely the opinion of one person who visited one time. Should I go back again, I would be more than willing to try something else and see if that hits the mark. read more

We went during the dust storm and despite saying on the phone they could only accommodate bar seating they got us in to a table inside! The place is huge and very pretty. The food is absolutely impeccable. The calamari with the pesto sauce is delectable and has great flavor. This got us full!! The pasta is delicious as well. I can't remember what the pasta I got was but it was so good and creamy. read more
