At this point, I've tried five of their entrées, two of their salads, and four of their cocktails -- Nonnina can't miss. I personally think that their chicken parmesan is one of the best in the city. Both the chicken Parmesan and the rigatoni à la vodka are so good that my fiancé, who doesn't really like either of those dishes usually, kept stealing bites. I *would* also recommend the carbonara, duck pappardelle, and arugula and prosciutto pizza, but I'm convinced at this point that everything on the menu is great. The service is exceptional. First - a huge shoutout and THANK YOU to the staff who let us keep our reservation despite our train arriving to the city 30 minutes behind schedule due to slippery tracks. We called ahead and explained the situation as it was my friend's birthday and we didn't want to miss out on our dinner - they were very accommodating and seated us at 8:15 for a 7:45 reservation. The restaurant was dimly lit and cozy on a cold, rainy night, but I'd love to go back when the patio is opened up to let in a nice breeze and lots of sunlight. Onto the actual dinner - 1000000/10. We had artichokes for an appetizer (plus the delicious focaccia table bread) before our pasta entrees. Everything came out timely and our server was very attentive, including making some wine recommendations to go along with our meals. When I went, they didn't have any tables available, but my friend and I were able to snag a spot at the bar which I honestly loved. I got the burger and fries and my friend got pasta. I'd been eyeing Nonnina for its daily happy hour menu since arriving in Chicago, but unfortunately didn't get a chance to venture in until the end of the week for regular dinner service. Located just across the street from The Westin and within walking distance from multiple hotels, its location is prime for a convenient dinner. Happy hour is served at the bar, regular dinner service on the enclosed patio and dining room. Decor is cozy and floral, and service was uncomplicated. Table bread: My least favorite part of the meal. I've always been of the opinion it's hard to mess up complimentary bread. I was disappointed to find the white loaf dry and dense without any discernible flavor. A healthy dash of kosher salt would've been most welcome. The focaccia was better, though underseasoned as well. The balsamic and olive oil provided on each table was welcome. If the bread were slightly toasted and the white loaf changed out, it would be a significant plus as an introduction to Nonnina dining. Beet and orange salad: Love the pairing of citrus and beets. The red and golden beets were roasted nicely, and the slivers of orange and grapefruit complemented the earthiness of the beets. There were two small droppers of balsamic and olive oil, which weren't quite enough for the salad, so I supplemented with the bottles provided on the tables. Chicken piccata: Enjoyed the tangy creamy sauce of this chicken piccata. I usually find capers to be too salty, but this version created a nice balance with the lemon. The sautéed spinach was a nice touch, but I felt like it soaked up way too much of the sauce and ended up being overly sour and salty at the same time. Everything rested on a bed of fingerling potatoes, some of which were perfectly crispy and others overfried and soggy. Linguini al Nero: I love squid ink pasta, and this wasn't a bad rendition. The lobster, shrimp, and calamari portion was generous, and there was a nice balance of tomato with seafood. I couldn't really taste the squid ink in the pasta, though the appearance itself was of lovely inky strands. Nonnina didn't quite live up to expectations, but it's a good convenient option for Italian in the downtown Chicago area, especially if staying at a nearby hotel. read more

Nonnina's is near perfection as far as AUTHENTIC Italian food goes. This has been a favorite of a dear friend of mine for years. I've been a few times, but this visit requires a stellar review. We had a classic full pranzo. My dinner companion had spent 14 years in Rome, so he knows his way around Italian cuisine. We started off with a classic Italian charcuterie board featuring excellent meats, including mortadella, salami, and prosciutto, along with some amazing cheeses. Perfect beginning to a classic pranzo or lunch. The wine selection was excellent. We next went for two pastas, a mushroom and a bolognese, which we split. The mushroom pasta is unique and well worth trying. Hardly any other Itailian restaurants off this much less make it nearly as well. It was a thick pasta cooked al dente (fusili?) and the sauce was very thick with that earthy flavor you can only get from real mushrooms. Just marvelous and impossible to order in any other Italian restaurant. The bolognese was spectacular and not overly acidic. I highly recommend. We finished off with tiramisu, which was a bit dry. I was disappointed. It was good, but a bit dry. Of course we had classic espresso, which was perfect. Then like civilized people ending a proper Italian meal, we had 2 glasses each of grappa! Sooo many ppl rec the rigatoni alla vodka so I had to go try it out!! We sat in the outdoor covered patio area - the ambiance is so cute and I loved the greenery wall on the ceiling. You're started off with complimentary bread which comes with a full bottle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I LOVE a good pairing, so I liked that the left the bottles so I can eat as much as I want! Bread had a cheese garlic crust, a bit dry but yum regardless! The rigatoni alla vodka was incredibly al dente and actually delish!! Very saucy, bursting with flavor when you bite into the curved rigatoni that hold every slurp of sauce, and it was so creamy and rich! Also loved that they freshly shaved as much parm as I wanted. The prosciutto and arugula pizza also came with such an addicting roasted onion and garlic flavor. The mozzarella and stracciatella paired super well with the saltiness of the prosciutto and the bitter freshness of the arugula. Doesn't have truffles in the ingredients, but it kinda had hints of truffle notes? LOVED! Also got a side of roasted mushrooms - huge portion for two - very umami! We made a reservation a couple of days in advance for happy hour at the bar and specifically requested one of the booths. Over the phone, they confirmed they do take happy hour reservations and were happy to accommodate us. However, when we arrived a few minutes early, the hostess told us there was no room in the bar and unfortunately, she was incredibly rude about it. No apology, no explanation, just a cold "there's no space," as if we hadn't made a reservation at all. It felt like she was trying to get us to leave, which was really disappointing. What made it even more frustrating was that, when we were leaving, we noticed one of the booths we had originally asked for had a reserved sign on it for a later party. We suggested waiting for a spot to open up in the bar, and about 10 minutes later, one did. From there, thankfully, the experience turned around. On Thursdays, they offer half-off pizzas, and that deal alone is worth it. We got the prosciutto and arugula pizza for just $11,such a steal, and it was absolutely delicious! We also tried their tiny martinis from the happy hour menu (the Cosmo and espresso martini), and both were fantastic. The drink selection was impressive for happy hour, and everything was well-made. I love happy hour! Especially in this economy. It's a way to treat myself without feeling like I'm breaking the bank. Nonnina has an extensive menu with both food and drink specials and I had to get here. I had the Italian sausage and peppers and I've never seen sausage and peppers look so pretty. Such a great presentation and I loved the chili sauce on top. The grill gave the sausage a nice crispy crunch but it was still tender. I also love the amount you receive. I'm solo and def couldn't finish all of this. The oysters were so fresh and clean. Shoutout to OutKast lol but seriously. Sometimes they can be a little too briney for me, but not these. And the pickled onions and champagne mignonette was a very nice touch. Both of them had plenty of fresh finely diced veggies which added a pleasant crunch to the oysters. Hands down the best Italian food I had on a recent Chicago trip! We were staying nearby in the area and decided to try Nonnina since it was close-by, and I'm so glad we did. We were able to get seated immediately as a party of 3 on a Saturday around 11am. The restaurant interior is pretty large, with both a more intimate indoor section and a livelier patio section. We ate in the patio, and it was very well decorated and also well heated on a cold and windy day. Our server was very helpful in recommending dishes, since it was our first time here, and we mainly ended up following their recs. We got the prosciutto-caprese and chopped salads, squid ink spaghetti and bucatini pastas, and the prosciutto & arugula pizza. This was A LOT of food for 3 people. Everything tasted delicious! Both salads were very well dressed, but the prosciutto-caprese was more interesting flavor wise (and very well plated). Of the 2 pastas, I enjoyed the bucatini more - it had great truffle flavor, but mixed with the egg yolk the pasta felt quite heavy in my stomach. The squid ink spaghetti was yummy as well, with brighter flavors and slightly spicy. The prosciutto & arugula pizza was probably the most standard dish, but very well done, with a thin and crispy crust. There was a promotion for Mother's day when we dined here, so we were able to get a free slice of tiramisu for dessert. It tasted very authentic and was very well soaked in coffee. Very nice of them to have such an offer for mothers! Service was impeccable on our visit, all our needs were taken care of promptly and in such a friendly manner. Overall bill came out to around $160, which was pretty pricey, but seemed fair given that this is a bit more upscale place, and the food quantity & quality as well as service was amazing. We asked to sit at the bar, which had plenty of open seating and had many TV's (for those interested in sports). We still felt a little hungry so we ordered the chicken parm which wowza--this one is one of the best I've had in the city. We were in the mood for a little something sweet and Uvaldo recommended the Pumpkin Soufflé which to be honest I gave him a weird look about and said "nah", Uvaldo persuaded me to order it, telling me it was, "his favorite thing on the menu". The place is dim and feels intimate and elegant, perfect for a date night. They offer a late night happy hour from 8-9pm before they close. They definitely don't let any square footage go to waste. For my main, I ordered the Orecchiette (Spinach Pasta, Broccolini, Prosciutto, House-Made Sausage, Chili Flakes, Pecorino, Lemon Bread Crumbs). It was good, but to be more specific, it was average. This is why I mentioned the decor of the restaurant. I expected to be blown away by the food. I was surprised that it was just okay. During this visit, I was with a table of seven. Throughout and after our mains, many of us had the same opinion on multiple different entree's. The general consensus was that it was just okay. I did share a Tiramisu and that was pretty spectacular. Service over all was good. No-nonsense and got us what we needed, when we needed it. Would I go back? The short answer is no, but I wouldn't want to discourage people from trying it out. Chicago is tricky in that there is an abundance of restaurants to get great food representing numerous cuisines. The competition is heavy and you really need to stand out and impress to capture that repeat business. Of course, this is merely the opinion of one person who visited one time. We came here as a group of 4 to celebrate my friend's birthday. We ordered the octopus as appetizer and was surprised at the fact that we couldn't each get one piece to ourselves. We had to cut some of the bigger pieces up just to make sure we each get to try it out. The wait time between the appetizer and main entree was 35mins. I know that they said the kitchen was busy/backed up but did not expect to wait 35mins for food. My friends got their food before I did so I actually had to wait an extra 5mins. Overall, the food was decent. I wouldn't say I had an amazing time here nor the food is a banger! I've been here before for HH and thought it was OK. It gives off nice vibes but I don't think the food is like superb. I personally wouldn't come here for food because I think there are other slightly better options. Overall, can't say I had a bad or amazing experience here. It's just OK in my honest opinion. read more

After roaming the city and searching for food options, the party I was traveling with finally decided on some Italian. I quickly found this on yelp with excitement because the food looks so delicious! When we arrived, we initially had to wait a few minutes, even though there weren't any customers and the dining area only on the bar and deli side. Once we were seated, we were given news and the waiter came over and took a drink orders. He disappeared for sometime, but when he finally came back, we got our drinks and then, he took the food order. The food was great, we had lunch special which included an appetizer of a salad, the main course, and a dessert all $25. I chose a caprese salad,, spaghetti, and meatball (prime rib meat), and panna cotta. Everything was fresh and feeling, even left with what felt like a ton of leftovers from just lunch! With how good the food was, it's unfortunate. I cannot say the same for the service. We only really saw the waiter when the food came out. Never got any refills on our water. And if someone else mentioned about the bill and their review we waited for the bill And when it finally came, he never asked us if we wanted to split it. No biggie we were able to do it ourselves using the receipt app. I would care to return in the future just to try the other things on the menu as well as cocktails, give them a second try for giving better service. read more

Overall solid Italian place in River North. Inside, the restaurant is very inviting and classy. The menu was a wide selection of pasta and other types of dishes. We started off with the seafood platter, which was good, the calamari was nicely cooked and not chewy. We got a variety of pasta dishes that were all very good and unique. The service was about average for what you expect. Overall a solid restaurant. read more
