I didn't love the flavor of the empanada, but that may be because I don't love olives! I only tried the beef empanada and that filling has olives.
We grabbed a 6-pack of empanadas from Nonna's at Grand Central Market last Saturday as appetizers. They have so many cool filling flavors to choose from. We picked the following: 2 Chicken Jalapeño 2 Philly Cheesesteak 2 Strawberry Cheesecake They hooked us up with a $2.26 bundle discount for a total of $34.64 plus tax. Honestly, it still felt a bit pricey for empanadas. On the bright side, they looked beautiful, perfectly golden. They actually stamp the name of the flavor right on each empanada crust, which is super convenient, so you know exactly which one is which. For the taste-wise, the only ones we actually liked were the Philly Cheesesteak empanadas. They were really good and cheesy! The Chicken Jalapeño and Strawberry Cheesecake ones were just mediocre and lacked flavor. Overall, they look amazing, but I've definitely had better empanadas elsewhere.
We came here after the ice cream. The place looked amazing and organized. We bought the beef one which was the most popular. It was ok. Nothing special about it. It came with chimmy churry. I wouldn't go back as it was 6.15 a empanada which was expensive.
Located inside the Grand Central Market, I've had Nonna's Empanadas bookmarked on Yelp for a while and finally got the chance to try it the other day when I treated my brother-in-law to lunch. Right away I liked how all the empanadas were lined up in the glass display clearly labeled and nicely organized. The variety of flavors was honestly pretty impressive. I tried my best to skim through all the options, but a line quickly started forming behind us and we had literally just arrived. We both ended up ordering the Combo #1, which comes with two empanadas and a drink. It came out to around $27 total for both of us, which felt like a great price. I chose the KBBQ empanada and the beef empanada, while my brother-in-law ordered the KBBQ and the Cuban empanada. We both really enjoyed the KBBQ one--it was flavorful, moist, warm, and perfectly crispy. I'd definitely come back just for that one again. The beef empanada was alright, but it leaned a bit dry for my taste and I didn't end up finishing it. On the other hand, my brother-in-law said the Cuban empanada was really good--different from what he expected, but in a good way. All the empanadas had a decent amount of filling too and next time I'd love to try one of their sweeter empanada options too. Overall, I'm glad I finally checked this spot out. The service was quick, the selection is fun to explore, and I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to try more flavors.

From the get-go, we were let down when the worker told us they were out of carne asada empanada and made us switch, only to walk by to grab napkins ten minutes later and see a case full of carne asada empanadas. Unfortunately, some of the other flavors we tried lacked flavor, like the salsa verde chicken and the chicken teriyaki. And at $6 per empanada, it's just not worth the mediocrity. With so many options at the food hall, I think you're better off trying something else.

They all were savory, tasty, perfect size, and I liked how cheesy the pepperoni and Philly cheese was. However, it's best to be eaten right away when they're fresh and warm so the cheese won't dry up. All came out warm, and the actual dough held up and had a slight crunch first bite. It wasn't doughy and I liked how filled they all were. They definitely don't skimp out on the filling. I didn't expect the Korean bbq one to have ground beef inside (I was expecting actually pieces of meat), but regardless the Korean flavors were there and it really tasted like bulgogi. Order by kiosk which was easy and I liked how all the empanadas were clearly labeled and how flavors were stamped on each one.
While at GCM I decided to stop by and grab some empanadas since they look delicious and they had many different types and flavors. They keep a list near the counter where they list their most popular in order by most sold. The service was friendly and the food was prepared insanely fast. I ordered a philly cheesesteak and a korean bbq empanada and they were both good. I don't know that I would order those again. The cheesesteak was good but I believe there was a sweetness from the dough that was throwing me off. For the korean bbq, it was too sweet all together for me and it was a meat overload. I would return to try some of the other flavors but I wouldn't grab these again.
I got the Korean bbq empanada. It was hot to the touch. The outer part was crunchy. I like how much meat was packed inside. Onion and green onion are inside of it. Empanadas of a variety of fillings were in 2 display cases. It's easy to see the flavors. The cashier was accommodating because I wanted to pay in cash. No tables or chairs were empty near the place. It occupied a small part of Grand Central Market. The lights were bright.

They have a large assortment of different flavor empanadas. Since it was my first time here, I really appreciated that they marked the fan favorites. We got 3 different flavors as part of the Combo meal with a drink (canned soda of your choice). Carne Asada - This was my favorite! Finely ground beef that's well-seasoned, and very saucy and flavorful. I also love that the empanada didn't break apart given how saucy it was. The outside shell was also very well made. Korean BBQ - This was picked out of curiosity since it was a popular one. This tastes like bulgogi, even the seasoning. Definitely saucier than the Carne Asada, but it did get tricky to eat closer to the end. Chicken - Really wanted to try the Chicken Verde but they were sold out so opted for chicken. It's definitely as expected, but I would like to try the popular Chicken Verde next time. While these are a bit pricy at $6 each, the 3 Empanada + Drink Combo does make it a little better. These are also quite substantial so I can't imagine eating more than two, if you're not that hungry, even one might work as a quick snack. We shared the 3 amongst two people. The ambiance is fun and lively if you like people. It can be crowded and annoying at times given it's GCM. Also, if you are new to this area, there's no AC since it's an open space, so on hot days it can be a lot. They do have seating in the back that have a lot more fans above. After this experience, I would come back again and try some more flavors. I was also surprise to find they have some dessert empanadas too (sweet flavors). This is a great option if you are looking for a snack or quick meal!

This is a food court location. There is table area which is first come first serve deal for seating. If looking for something light, yet filling well this is spot. These empanadas good not skimpy in filling. Service staff very nice, since this is food court lots places to seat many people go by all day. Definitely recommend try these empanadas

This empanada spot inside Grand Central Market is an absolute must try! The empanadas were incredibly delicious, pretty golden crispy on the outside, and packed with flavorful fillings. Each bite tasted homemade, warm, satisfying, and had that ideal crispy outside and incredible soft inside textures that transported my tastebuds to various levels. What really takes this experience to another level was the customer service. The staff were beyond friendly, welcoming, and genuinely enthusiastic about their food. They made great recommendations, you can tell truly care about the customers. If you're walking through the Market, do yourself a favor and stop here. Fresh, authentic, and made with love. I'll definitely be back!!

Nonna's Empanadas - DTLA with the fast and friendly service. Located in side the middle of Grand Central Market this empanada emporium has a massive variety of nadas, including vegan and vegetarian friendly stuffed assortments. I've had Nonna's at Ubatuba Acai locations where they often have a smaller select variety. Grabbing a late lunch I discovered their 2 Empanadas and a Basic Drink deal for a reasonable price. The Beyond Meat and Samosa Veggie side by side spoke to me and I was grateful for the flavors. I didn't expect the Beyond Meat Empanada to be filled with a thick cut slice as the inside of most are blended flavors and ingredients like ones I've had before. Good variety of canned beverages and bottled water. They take cash, card and tap payment. You can dine in or takeout. Seating at Grand Central Market is very first come first serve, which means you can even grab more things elsewhere or even dine outside. Open at 9:30 am on weekday and as early as 9am on Saturday and Sunday until 9pm each day. read more

Stopped by Nonna's Empanadas while walking through the market in LA and decided to grab a few different flavors to try. Glad I did because every one we ordered was good! We tried the guava, Nutella, ham, and bacon empanadas. The savory ones had a nice balance of filling without feeling too heavy, and the pastry itself was warm and satisfying. The guava was probably my favorite surprise--sweet and fruity without being overly sugary. The Nutella was also a great dessert option, especially while it was still warm. I like that you can mix and match different flavors, so it's an easy snack to share and try several at once. Perfect little stop while exploring the market, whether you want something savory or you're craving something sweet. Simple, tasty, and convenient. I'd definitely grab a few again next time I'm here. read more
Service is always nice here. They greet you and are nice! No complaints! It's busy and sometimes the line is long. I always get the same thing, the beef one and corn one. But this time I also got the Cuban. My husband said the Cuban pork was soft and flavorful. He was pleasantly surprised. The beef always hits. They were filled so much the innards were spilling everywhere. Get the spicy chimichurri you will not regret it. The mild is just that. Mild. I can't eat spicy and even the mild was lacking for me. My friends got other flavors (pictured). I would come back and get the sweet ones next time. This is not a daily food. A 6 pack cost me $40. What I ordered: 3 beef 1 cuban 2 corn My husband asked why don't you yelpers post pictures of the insides. All I see is a whole empanada. I wanna see what it's filled with. Nonna's Empanadas (est 2009) is a small empanada stand in GCM. They offer customers hand crafted empanadas and variety of filling flavors from carne asada to queso to banana to dulce de leche y nutella. These empanada are beautifully displayed in-front of an Ohtani baseball player mural. Price per empanada is at $6 quid...oops I meant usd. I had the cheese empanada and I thought it was just okay albeit dry. I had better empanada in my life and this was not it. Overall, it's nice to try Nonna's. read more

Love coming into Grand Central Market for a quick bite whenever we're in DTLA. Last weekend I decided to try Nonna's Empanadas for lunch. It smelled so good and there was a line so I figured it must be decent and it was! I ordered their combo #1 which includes 2 empanadas and a drink for $13. I tried their chicken mushroom & cheese and margherita empanadas with a side of their non-spicy chimichurri sauce. Both were so delicious, but I enjoyed the chicken mushroom & cheese empanada the most; which also went really well with the chimichurri! Service was so friendly and the food was good at a fair price. I'd definitely grab a bite here again! read more
Such a cute, delicious and affordable meal option in Grand Central Market I love the branding here, their signage is very good. The selection of both savory and sweet dessert style empanadas is inspiring. I had a difficult time deciding what to get, but opted for the spinach veggie empanada as recommended by the staff and the guava one for dessert. I am looking forward to the potato veggie samosa one, but they were sold out. My husband got cheeseburger, carne asada and Korean BBQ. He noted that while they were all meat, they each had a clear and distinct flavor. These things were stuffed nicely, and my favorite part - it says the type of empanada right on the crust! So if you order more than one you don't have to guess what's inside. The crust is flakey and everything was just wonderful. Looking forward to trying more. For vegetarian diets there are a lot of choices including Beyond Meat, Margarita, Cheese, Mac & Cheese, Portabello Mushrooms, etc. read more
My wife and I hit up Grand Central Market before a show. We were munchy but not hangry so Nonna's Empanadas was a good choice and the line wasn't long. They have a variety of empanadas to choose from so you're bound to find one that hits the spot for you. We tried the Chicken Jalapeno, Korean BBQ, and Pepperoni empanadas. The Chicken Jalapeno was too dry for us. The Korean BBQ was much better and honestly I wouldn't have thought that Pepperoni would go with empanadas but it did (it's basically a mini-calzone). They have good deals (our 3 empanadas and drink was like $15). If you're in GCM and want a snacky snack, try Nonna's Empanadas. The stand is located on the Hill St. side, next to the GCM merch stand. You can't miss it - there's an Ohtani mural right in front of the register. read more
I walked into the Grand Central Market for the first time this past weekend and was in shock of all the great vendors I saw. Nonna's empanadas smelled so delicious so I install was attracted to them. I decided to stop by and take a look for myself. I was greeted by a nice cashier who let us know what were the most popular choices of empanadas. We had just ate but we decided to try one savory and one sweet option. We ended up going with these choices; 10/10 - Pepperoni: so delicious and so cheesy! Like an upgraded hot pocket. But like way better! lol great taste on the pepperoni and you can tell they use high quality cheese. Great cheese pull! 8/10 banana dulce de leche: a little sweet for me but still very good! I'm a sucker for anything banana so this was a good choice! Over all the market has a variety of vendors but Nonna's sticks out like a sore thumb. The ambiance in the place seems so fast pace as everyone is grabbing food and it's pretty loud in there. Great place to go and hang out with friends. Swing by and check it out! read more

Hits: The banana dulce de leche empanada was delicious! It was hot, fresh, and sweet. The service was fast despite the line being somewhat long. Visually the empanadas are super cute with the store's name and the label of its stuffing on the dough. Miss: The Cuban was disappointing. I thought the portion of meat was good, but it lacked the main elements of a Cuban sandwich's pickles, Swiss cheese, and mustard. It was basically just a pork empanada. The price is expensive, but it is in a touristy location so I can somewhat overlook that. Based on my experience and a few other reviews, I would stick to the sweet ones if I decide to return. read more

I thought these empanadas were good, but not spectacular. I got the carne asada one and it was kind of salty and lacked flavor. The Cuban one was better because the ingredients were more harmonious which I really liked. The dipping sauce it comes with is really good though. read more

The hype is real! I just got the carne asada to try. The employee was really nice - they were supposed to open at 9:30 but there are empanadas ready and he let me order. He warned me that the carne asada was a little spicy and I'm okay with that. He also gave a tapatio hot sauce packet on the side. Overall, empanada was warm, tasty and the ratio of the filling and the breading was perfect. I would go back to try their other flavors. read more
What a surprising find; the empanadas were fresh and hot. The filling was amazing, and the crunch from their breading was so good! 8/10. I wanted more when I was done. I recommend you give them a try when you're in the area! read more
Nonna's Dulce de Leche empanada has been a go to favorite of mine for yearrrrs. I just can't get enough of that sweet, caramely, warm goodness when it's fresh. I love it even more the next day with coffee. Just pop it in the toaster oven and the branded golden pastry calls your name. Ugh, so good. I have tried several of the savory flavors. Some work well, some not so much. But dulce de leche always hits. The empanadas are large enough to share with another person..but I'm not sharing. Wish I had known there was a location in Grand Central Market. I always drive over to The Grove when I'm craving. Not anymore. I enjoy the vibe at GCM better. It's more local market than uppity shopping. Smiling service. I got lucky not to have to wait in a long line but I saw it stacking up when I first walked in. Worth the wait though. read more
While waiting for my order at another vendor inside Grand Central Market, I noticed a small line forming at Nona's Empanadas and decided to give it a try. The display alone was enough to draw you in--there were so many options to choose from, both sweet and savory. Flavors ranged from strawberry cheesecake and seasonal pumpkin to chicken, mushroom, and the one I ultimately chose, Korean BBQ. The empanadas were priced reasonably, and the variety made it hard to pick just one. I went with the Korean BBQ since it was noted as one of their most popular, and it did not disappoint. The filling was flavorful, the crust was perfectly baked, and it had just the right balance of sweet and savory. I wish I could have tried a few more flavors, but I was pacing myself to enjoy other bites around the market. Nona's Empanadas is definitely worth a stop if you're exploring Grand Central Market--you'll want to try more than one. read more
If you've never tried this place, you're missing out! The Margherita and mushroom empanadas are my favorites but the beef is also a top contender. I have not tried all the flavors though. I do enjoy the savory ones more than the sweet ones. The staff at the grand central market location were super nice and the service was fast. If you've ever been here before then you know it gets toasty and stuffy inside so it's best to find a table outside to enjoy your meal. read more
Stopped by Nonna's Empanadas during a morning visit to Grand Central Market before heading out to a Dodgers game. First off, the place was super clean and well-kept, which always sets a good tone. Right in front of the shop, there's a cool mural of Shohei Ohtani, which immediately caught my eye. They have a huge selection of empanadas, everything from sweet options like Nutella to savory, meaty fillings like beef or salsa verde chicken. I went with the salsa verde chicken, and even though it looked a bit dry at first glance, it totally surprised me. It was super juicy, flavorful, and had just the right amount of spice. Since I was planning to snack around the market, I only had one , but it left me wanting more. The staff was really friendly too. Shoutout to the employees who stayed patient and gave solid recommendations, even with a line forming. I got the combo of two empanada with a drink for about $13. Tried Samosa Beef & Carne Asada. I could come back for the Carne Asada but pass on the Samosa. Carne Asada - great balance of meat, sauce, & texture! Also has guac Samosa Beef - a bit salty for me & just loaded with ground beef so it felt a little dry I would come back since they have so many options & it's a great snack to share at the grand central market read more

Four stars for the following reasons: 1. The fabulous mural facing Nonna's in the Grand Central Market. You find Nonna's and the mural in the second room (if you came off Angels Flight) of a multi room massive food court. The mural is a delight. 2. The service. The cashier was patient helpful and helped me order as the array of empanadas was dizzying....something for everyone. 3. The compostable plates and straws. And food takeaway cardboard boxes. They still use plastic utensils but I thought it was great they were moving in a sustainable direction. Hope they go all the way. I ordered 2 of the #1s...basically you get two two empanadas each with your choice of drink. I ordered Filipino Beef 4/5 and a Cuban 4/5 for my mom. And I ordered for myself a chicken/mushroom 3/5 and cheese and Philly cheesesteak. 3/5 personally I found all the empanadas dry and salty...especially the beautifully-crimped edges lacking and hard. Salty is subjective as my mom enjoyed all the bites of empanada,, so that's all that mattered...if mom enjoyed them and she did. 4. Loved that each empanadas had a tattoo or brand like sear with the name of the filling. Easy to identify what the filling be. And they were large enough to be shared, and sampled by two persons. 6. Loved the olive tapanade. 4/5 Also there was an oily nonspicy chimichuri. It was not balanced but it was herbaceous, tho mainly oil was the major flavor. 2/5 read more
I really enjoyed Nonna's Empanadas! We were walking around the Grand Central Market in Downtown LA (in December 2024) and walked past this store. Hm.... would love a snack, I thought. Good thing my friends said the same. On their website, "Nonna's Empanadas are made and baked fresh daily." Their menu consists of beef, pork, chicken, seafood, veggies, vegan, and sweet. Basically something for everybody! I really liked that the empanadas are actually marked. LOL. We tried - Salsa Verde Chicken, Banana, Margherita Veggies, Carnitas, and Nutella! Service was quick and easy. We just found a nearby table and chairs within Grand Central Market. ENJOY!! read more

This is a small empanada stand in Grand Central Market in downtown LA. The empanadas are cute and stamped with the names so you don't get confused which one is which. I thought that was quite clever. They are somewhat pricey around $6 each. We tried several different flavors and some were good- the carne asada and Korean BBQ were flavorful; however, the others were rather bland- the margherita, mushroom and chicken, and chicken alfredo. read more
Nonna's Empanadas is a favorite spot of Grand Central Market. These Empanadas are handcrafted, baked fresh daily and delicious. There are so many different flavors, something for everyone. My favorites so far are the Carne Asada and the Salsa Verde empanadas. The line is always long, but it moves quickly. The service is to the point. Every time I'm at GCM, I have to get at least one empanada from Nonna's. I'm hooked. read more

My sister got Mac and cheese, dulce de leche, and Carne Asada. My mom got the veggie, and liked it but wished it had more salt. I had the guava cream cheese one. I liked it. The filings are mixed rather than two fillings side by side. I would definitely get it again. My sister says the dulce de leche is delicious. Overall we thought the savory ones lacked flavor, but the desert ones were amazing! read more
Stopped here during a one day stay in Los Angeles and I was pleasantly surprised. I love empanadas and Nonna's did not disappoint. The carna asada was delicious, but the Korean BBQ was absolutely phenomenal. So much flavor. Next time I'm in LA, I will definitely be stopping by to try more flavors. Highly recommend! read more
