Food (5/5): How is it that I haven't been to Niku X earlier!? I came here for a birthday dinner and the whole meal sent my soul to another dimension. Their unlimited Japanese and Australian wagyus and seafood did not cut on the quality. Every single cut was juicy no matter the cook on the steak. My absolute favorite of the night had to be the yakisuki because it had a marinade that was both sweet and savory. Of the seafood, my favorite had to be the grilled 1/2 lobster tail. Each seafood and steak came with a lemon that helped cut through the richness of each main dish. The side dishes were also freaking delicious. The sushi from the buffet could have been skipped for me personally because of the amount of wasabi. Their carpaccio was definitely worth it because of the truffle oil but personally, I would focus on the signature dishes by the chef next time. I recommend: potato pave, oxtail potsticker, fries with garlic aioli, wagyu tallow shishito pepper, and the seafood tom yum soup. The potato pave is flaky but soft and lets the steak shine. The oxtail potsticker was my absolute favorite with its stringy nature and umami depth of flavor. The fries were crispy and the garlic cut the richness of the meat. The shishito pepper was absolutely needed for some vegetable relief lol. The seafood tom yum was spicy but refreshing from all the fat happening from the grill. I AM COMING BACK AGAIN! My husband and I celebrated his birthday with dinner at Niku, bringing along our 5-year-old son. We selected the Premium option for $135, applying our Chubby member discount. The service was outstanding--servers and busers were very attentive and helpful, consistently checking on us with big smiles, even while handling multiple tables. However, the food quality was only average: the crab legs and sashimi lacked freshness, and the meat was just okay. I personally think Chubby Cattle offers better meats. I personally enjoyed the appetizer selection more. Also, the menu isn't very kid-friendly considering it's half the price of an adult's--my son only ate a little of the waffle fries, wagyu fried rice, some chicken karaage, and fried string beans. Niku could improve by offering more kid-friendly options. For dessert, they only have four choices, and honestly, I wasn't impressed. Will I come back? Maybe if they offer more fresh food choices and options that are more kid-friendly. Honestly, I don't feel like the experience justifies the price! We booked a Sunday reservation at 4:45 PM and went with the Premium option. With the Chubby Cattle membership, it was $145 per adult, and kids are 50% off. Customer service was very good throughout the meal. My favorite item was definitely the A5 ribeye easily the highlight of the dinner. I was a little surprised by the king crab. I was expecting to see it displayed with the seafood, but instead you order the king crab one serving at a time. It comes out warm/steamed. I recently had king crab in Ketchikan, Alaska, this summer, and personally I prefer it served cold. The king crab here was still 3/5, but it didn't have the same taste and texture as what I had in Alaska. Overall, the meat selection, service, and experience were excellent. Definitely a 5/5 for me. I wanted this place to be good. Unfortunately, this place is average and comparable to a typical all you can eat kbbq in Vegas. The sushi looks good, but as it sits under heated lamps it taste warm with a thin layer of partially cooked fish, depending on how long it's sat under the light. The photos and the spread of the food definitely is eye-catching, but the overall experience was lackluster. What I found was the meat was indeed delicious, but I felt the buffet was only slightly better than the one at Chubby Cattle. The service was very hands off and we often had to call someone over grab items that work "good enough" in the buffet. Expected better service considering the price. Suggestions I have is to grill your own meat, as it comes faster. You get two hours to eat your food, which is good enough. I preferred all the A5 waygu and the beef tongue. Since it is at a hotel, you have valet parking only, but I think it was $17 after validation. I have a membership and I don't really use it so I thought after watching some influencers videos, this could be a great experience. I was so disappointed bc of the freshness, quality, and selections they had to offer for this 115$ standard non member price per person. They didnt even have duck which i saw in a lot of videos about 6 months ago. None of the food was good tasting and felt like they've been under the warmer all day. I liked the rib eye meat, but thats under the 149$ premium menu. The rib eye was very tender and the quality was decent. Interestingly, I had chubby cattle a few days before and the meat quality was out of this world! Im assuming since niku x and chubby cattle bbq are from the same group, they're getting their meats from the same place. Obviously, the clear winner in meat taste and quality is chubby cattle bbq. The sushi quality was highly disappointing and had an awful smell to it. A special mention, the tom yum and miso soup was absolutely delicious. The duck soup was underwhelming and I wouldn't even consume that to cleanse my pallette. The best thing here for me was the egg tart. It was one of the best ive ever had. Another thing that really bothered me was the service. The help and food runners telling me they'll bring me a new spoon but it never came. I asked for ice and that didnt show up until the end of my dinner. I ordered another tom yum soup but it didn't come for 20m until I asked for it again. I got meat I didn't even order and the hardest working person was the guy that changed my grill and bussed the table. My server was nice and pleasant to talk to but he was clearly too busy. Niku X happens to be me and my husband's go-to special date night spot. It's such a beautiful restaurant nestled in a high rise in DTLA. In the past year, we have visited this place about 4 times and have had a great experience every time. I guess it's expected for the price point, but I feel it's not only that. All the different servers we have had here have always done such a good job making us feel comfortable with that we are getting, what we have ordered, and what we would like more information on. Even as a couple who pretty much know what to expect from our visit, it's always so refreshing getting to experience it differently each time, and that's because of the service. So definitely 10/10 for on that point. As for the food, it's exactly what they say it is. It's Japanese Style AYCE Wagyu and seafood, with a variety of other dishes; hot and cold. We typically go for the wagyu and lobster tails, but this time I also wanted to try the crab legs. I usually prefer crab legs over lobster, but for some reason, this time around, I feel the crab legs were lacking. I didn't feel the need to ding them too hard for this though, because everything else was still delicious. My other favorite is cheese tart. I NEVER leave a chubby restaurant without 2...3...4...5... to go. :) I am so lucky they never stop me. It's literally my favorite thing. All in all, I am rating this place 9/10 (for this visit). The -1 star is only because my favorite appetizer (miso Chilean sea bass) seemed overcooked, which made it not as smooth and light as it typically is. Was so excited to come here!! The menu seemed incredible and we finally came here for our anniversary to justify the price point. We had a reservation at 7pm but arrived and 6:30. They werent busy so we still were able to be seated right away yay! Also, do valet parking, it's $16.50 for 2.5hrs with validation. Its cheaper than the $30 self park. We got a table with a grill and decided to splurge on the premium option to get the A5! The A5 wagyu was the best cut by far, but the striploin was also good. I do not recommend the australian sukiyaki - very mid. The wagyu hand roll was also super yummy, wish we got more than 1. We also enjoyed the grilled lobster a lot!! The other reviews are right - theres only so much wagyu u can eat lol. It got old really fast so we didnt eat as much as we thought we would. I did really love the snow crab available at the buffet though! It was delish. The miso corn, potato pave and seabass were also very yummy. Some lowlights - it didnt feel like there were that many options to choose from. A lot of the options on the menu seemed eh, and the buffet line didnt seem very fresh or look very appetizing. The king crab which i was so excited for, SUCKED. We ordered it a second time to make sure it wasnt just a bad batch and it was so bad. I dont know why but it was SO DRY ?!?!?! It was really not good at all. Such a waste and i was really dissapointed. The sukiyaki was meh, and also the australian yakisuki was very meh too. I also wish they had ice cream! There wasnt really anything refreshing to cleanse the pallet. The yuzu cheesecake was fire though - really glad we had room for dessert. The other cakes were just okay. ELEVATED AYCE! 5.0 We discovered NIKU X, a contemporary Japanese yakiniku restaurant, during a recent trip to Los Angeles. We learned that Chubby Group, a U.S. based food-and-beverage holding company, operates a number of dining concepts and currently has over 60 multi-concept restaurants. Some of their concepts include Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House, The X Pot, Wagyu Master, Chubby Cattle BBQ and Chubby Skewers, just to name a few. Needless to say, with so many opportunities to dine at their restaurants near our home in the Bay Area, we decided to upgrade to a Chubby Club PLUS membership. We have found it to be well worth the perks, especially the special birthday benefits. NIKU X was only a 10-15 minute walk from our hotel, The Ritz-Carlton. Located inside The Wilshire Grand Center in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the restaurant is in a busy area. Use the main entrance for the Intercontinental Hotel and take the escalators to the second floor. Our early 5:00 p.m. reservation was perfect, as the restaurant was not crowded, and we were seated at a very large and quiet table. We ordered the Premium Wagyu selection, a few of the chef's signature dishes and visited the buffet area a couple of times, mainly for the crab legs. Next time, I would probably stay away from some of the heavier items, like the Potato Pavé, which was quite filling. Our two main servers were incredibly friendly and offered endless suggestions on the meat selections and side dishes. The restaurant's policy is to cook the first round of meat for guests, but we were fortunate to have exceptionally attentive servers who cooked just about every round for us. Our visit to Niku was, unfortunately, one-and-done. We decided to give it a try since we loved Mama Xita and were gifted a Chubby Plus membership. We had heard good things about Niku, but the entire experience was underwhelming. Other than the Oxtail Dumplings, Duck Bone Soup, Yakisuki, and attentive staff, here were the obstacles in Niku's way of success: First, the most convenient (and least expensive parking) available is valet for $16.50 with Niku validation. Chubby has many other delicious locations without this tediousness. Second, they have a buffet section and menu list of items, but the lack of continuity between their two options made our meal feel disjointed. We thoroughly enjoyed the crab legs and lobster tails in the beginning, and as we ate, we ordered from their chef specials and picked from the buffet, but it ended up a blurred line between the several options. Third, the quality of meats was nothing special. Overall, the "experience" of dining in a nice DTLA hotel was not conveyed. It was a restaurant masquerading as luxury but lacking clear identity. For $250 even with a discount, I'd recommend going elsewhere. read more

We ended up coming in about 5:30 pm even though our reservations were for 6pm, the hostess greeted us and sat us right away. Our servers Emily and Nessie were amazing as well and helped the boys and explained to them how things worked and they were super patient, attentive and amazing servers. Emily took the time to order some of the things off the menu so that they could start. They always checked in on us. The self serve food was great, it would run out at times but would be replenished by the time we were back for more. We had an amazing experience, Emily and Nessie also brought out a birthday cake with a candle for him and had us sing happy birthday! The buffet bar isn't very big, but it's thoughtfully curated: fresh lobster tails, snow crab legs, abalone, sashimi and sushi, plus a few cooked dishes. I especially want to point out that the service was amazing. Our waiter and waitresses were very attentive and constantly checked on us even while taking care of multiple tables. I've always had really good experiences with the service at Chubby Group restaurants, and this was no different. I do think there are some things that could be improved, especially considering the price point and the kind of experience Niku X is trying to offer. For the table setting, I think there should be a chopstick rest or even just a small utensil plate. Once food started coming out, there really wasn't anywhere to put our utensils except directly on the table, especially once the table started getting messy. I also think a small individual plate should already be provided since a lot of the food is meant to be shared. The seating also felt a little too close between different parties. I understand the layout and concept, but even a small or subtle divider between groups would make it feel a little more private and intimate. For the seafood, I really think warm towels or wet towels should be provided before and after. You're eating crab and lobster and using your hands, so it felt strange not having anything to clean your hands with. I also think actual seafood tools would help. The scissors worked, but crab crackers and seafood picks would have made much more sense, especially with the Alaskan king crab because the shell is so prickly. I understand why the steamed lobster was on the smaller side because obviously there's a cost involved, but ours was unfortunately really dry and was basically falling apart. A lot of the food coming from the chef's selection also wasn't really hot. It was more warm, especially the king crab. I think this is one of those things that makes a big difference because seafood like that is so much better when it comes out at the right temperature. The sashimi and sushi display was also almost always empty when we went up. I completely understand not wanting to fill the trays too much and have the fish sitting there, but maybe smaller trays that are replenished more frequently would work better. That way it still looks abundant and inviting without compromising freshness. Some of the nigiri also looked like they had already started drying out. The wasabi was extremely dry too. It's a small thing, but at this price point I think those little details become more noticeable. The carpaccio tasted good, but I felt like it could have had a little more flavor. The salmon supposedly had truffle, but I honestly could barely taste the truffle at all. The wagyu was probably one of the more disappointing parts for me because A5 wagyu is obviously one of the things you're coming here for. I've had A5 wagyu in Japan, and the flavor and texture here just weren't what I was expecting. I actually preferred the meat quality at Chubby Cattle, which surprised me considering wagyu is supposed to be such a big part of the Niku X experience. The wagyu caviar tartare was also a little underwhelming. I think the tartare itself needed a little more seasoning or flavor, and the seaweed that came with it tasted stale. With wagyu and caviar, I feel like this could easily be one of the standout dishes, so it was disappointing that the other components brought it down. The grilled lobster tail topping was way too salty for me. The potato pavé actually had good flavor, but only the four corners were crispy. I think it would be so much better if there was a more consistent crisp all around instead of mostly being soft. The cheese corn was also pretty dry by the time the cheese was completely melted. And the crepe cake was literally frozen solid when it was served. I think dessert is such an easy last impression of the meal, so having it properly thawed or tempered before serving would make a difference. None of these things individually ruined the experience, but when you put everything together, especially at this price point, they start to become more noticeable. I think Niku X has a really good concept and a lot of potential, but the little details need a little more attention for the experience to really match the price. Things like food temperature, freshness, proper utensils, table setup, and consistency would make it feel much more polished. Again, I really want to emphasize that the service was great. The staff were probably one of the best parts of our experience and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. My criticism is really more about the food and some of the details of the overall experience, because I think with a few improvements it could be so much better. read more

Not going to lie - we had initial concerns when we realized Niku is NOT in the hotel, but instead was outside in the back behind the valet area. Our concerns were further heightened when we reached the front entrance, as it was giving "low-budget all-you-can-eat" and not what we saw on Yelp. We were also quite surprised to realize that half of the restaurant allows for self-grilling... that was not the vibe we were going for, it was quite smokey, and I was wearing white on white. However! We were moved to the other section with pretty decor, comfy booth seating, where they bring out ready-made skewers to the table - everything turned around from there. I didn't know where to start so the server basically ordered and recommended everything to try. There was so much going on from the appetizers that were being served, the meat being cooked on the grill, and the open buffet of food. Literally nothing stood out to me. I think the appetizers were better than the japanese bbq itself. For $150 per person, I expected at least quality dinnerware. The plates themselves are PLASTIC. Please give me a break. After they found the cash and confirmed that we had paid, there wasn't even an apology for the repeated calls or for charging my card. UPDATE: Came back here for my girlfriend's early birthday celebration dinner, and it was honestly a disappointment compared to our previous visits. We had a 6:45 PM reservation but weren't seated until 7:15 PM. It really felt like they only gave us a table because we finally went up to the host to ask why we were still waiting 30 minutes past our time. Not a great start. Once we got seated, things didn't get much better. I ordered a cocktail that took a while to come out. We had already ordered and received two rounds of sides and meats, and still no drink. I had to flag down our server to follow up, and it finally showed up shortly after. Then came the main issue. My girlfriend went straight for the crab legs and noticed only snow crab was out and it honestly wasn't as fresh as it should be for the price. Toward the end of dinner, I saw a different server carrying out Alaskan crab legs. When I asked our server, she told us they still have them, but you have to order them directly through her now. This wasn't written on the menu at all. If I hadn't happened to see someone else get them, we never would have known. I went ahead and ordered two orders (4 legs total), but it took over 20 minutes to get to us. We were just sitting there waiting, already full, but we stayed because that's what she usually eats and wanted to eat some before leaving. Whenever I think of luxury and All You can Eat, I think of Niku X. I will say it's for sure on the pricier side, but I can see why. Huge crab legs, meaty lobster tails, and good quality meat, you are def getting what you pay for. In addition there is fresh sashimi and other entrees to try. I don't mind getting my fill from just the grilled meat and seafood though... I also love the ambiance of the restaurant. It has a nice moody setting, and the service is top tier. A year ago, we came here for lunch, and it didn't disappoint. This time, we decided to try dinner, and it was a completely different experience--in the best way. Roman was incredible. I never had a better server before. He went above and beyond by knowing the menu, checking up on us, cooking our meat, and even taking out the shells of the lobsters for over 8 of them that we ate. He was constantly filling our waters, making good convo, and refilling napkins while attending to other guests. I want Roman to be our server everytime we go! He should be promoted! As for the food, it has always been incredible. Sushi, A5 wagyu, seafood, what more could you ask for. It was incredible and everything was well stocked up. Pretty good spot. We got the $500 tasting menu, which the course meals were all so good, and nicely plated. Though, I thought the main course which was the wagyu tomahawk lacked flavor surprisingly. The experience with them cooking it at the table side was very entertaining though. I especially loved the omurice and the server offered us free drinks! The ambience is very chill, but the space is pretty open and bright, which may not be ideal if you're looking for an intimate setting. We also thought the restaurant was in a high rise, but you're near the first floor. I'd definitely want to try the AYCE menu some time. read more

I had a great time here to celebrate my birthday!! Service was amazing, they were totally hands on, refilling our glasses with water, replacing the bbq pan, giving us extra napkins, very friendly and inviting!! The meat were delicious!! We do get 2 hours here and at this location, your last call to order is (if I remember correctly) 20 or 40 minutes before your 2 hours is up. And the clock starts as soon as you checked in, if not that as soon as you're seated for sure. It's very pretty inside. Even though we are here for the meat, I did notice the dessert section is not just where you can just get up and get it, you have to go to the dessert counter which is right by hostess stand and you let them know what you want and they will get it for you. My favorite is the Yuzu Cheesecake. Also, as mentioned we are here for the meat, I still have to acknowledge that their Self-serve station is a bit limited, but still good BECAUSE they had Steamed Lobsters and Crab legs there to choose from, if you are into seafood. Also...because I'm only 5'2, there were some of the items I have a harder time seeing. And also, this restaurant is on the 2nd floor of the Wilshire Grand Center / InterContinental Hotel Building Los Angeles Downtown yep...it is Valet parking, the restaurant will validate with discounted pricing (I posted the regular prices in Yelp here). Just celebrated a birthday here yesterday! We had the different cuts of beef, oxtail potstickers, miso sea bass wrap, potato pave, wagyu rice, wagyu tomato stew, big head prawn, and assorted fruit. The cuts of beef really stood out to us because they were so tasty! Roman and Kelley helped create such a unique dining experience for us. Both recommended and took turns to help us cook the beef. We tried cooking our own, and it just wasn't the same! They are so knowledgable about the beef cuts and cooking process. We ended up with delicious, juicy bites that melted in our mouths each time they were on the grill! On top of that, they were really friendly and attentive to our needs. They checked in on us and made sure we got everything we needed. Excellent service! Overall, the food, service, and AYCE experience were incredible! The food was amazing! Even though it's AYCE, the quality is not like the others. The spread was quite amazing - snow crab clusters, king crab legs, shrimp cocktail, abalone, sashimi, and many cuts of beef for the BBQ. The service was outstanding! Joe and Mikey were amazing!
