I had a great experience here, came around 6pm and the wait was not too bad, food was a bit pricey but it was for sure worth the money! I was reccomended the pineapple skewer by my server, Tracey, and it was amazing, I would reccomend this to anyone else who is thinking of dining here. The bar seating style was unique, a bit more tightly squeezed than I'd prefer, but still cozy. They serve your patties and skewers atop of these skillets for you to keep it warm or--if you'd like--cooked a bit more. They also have a membership for discounts for here as well as other locations, which I didn't sign up for it, but I definitely plan on coming back and doing that next time! read more

This place is amazing! I got served such high quality food, and everything came out fresh, hot, and smoking. I especially loved the oysters. they were SO good. I had Tracey as my server, and wow... she was AMAZING. I came with my boyfriend, but I forgot he was sitting next to me because Tracey was so cute, sweet, and attentive. She was checking on me so much that I started wondering if I came here for the food or for Tracey. Tracey truly made my experience at Chubby Don even better. The food was 10/10, the service was 11/10, and Tracey deserves a Chubby Don trophy. Would absolutely come back again! For the oysters and definitely for Tracey. I left with a full stomach, a happy heart, and a new favorite person. read more

Had an amazing first-time experience at Chubby Don today! We came in a little later, but the staff welcomed us in with such kindness and made us feel right at home. Everyone was wonderful, and a special thank you to our servers, Tracey and Dylan! They were incredibly attentive, friendly, and did a great job guiding us through the menu. Honestly, the service was outstanding! My family and I will definitely be coming back. Thank you!! read more

It was my first time for my wife & I and we didn't know what to expect, but we were both extremely surprised. Everything we ordered was tasty and on point. The pork with Lychee yakitori was an oishii (yum) surprise. On top of that, everyone working there was very friendly and nice, especially our waiter Dylan. We will definitely be back. Been waiting to try this spot, and I'm so glad they finally started opening early so we had the chance to stop by for lunch today! We ordered the set with 2 patties, added cheese to one, and got 3 yakitoris. The patties were so soft and flavorful, and we tried all of their sauces. Every single one was yummy! For the yakitori, I got the beef tongue, short rib, and pineapple. The beef tongue and short rib were both so soft and flavorful. I added their yuzu salt and lemon to both and it made it taste ever better. The glazed pineapple was sooo goood too.....I'm definitely going to be thinking about it for a while. The service was also great! Our server, Dylan, was super attentive and friendly. We can't wait to come back and hopefully have him again next time. Thank you for the recs! None of it disappointed! read more

Service was good, wagyu burgers were good. Waited about 40 minutes on a late night. The waitlist goes a-lot faster than you think because I think a-lot of people sign up on the waitlist, but end up going elsewhere. Since this is at Santa Anita mall, you have plenty to do while waiting. With Chubby membership, you get a $5 discount on the entrees. My partner and I got the 2 wagyu burgers, pasteurized egg, and three skewer set for $35 (otherwise is $40). All entrees come with a bowl of rice and tounge soup. Tongue soup is very peppery and has chunks of tongue meat (rating 3/5). The wagyu burgers was delicious (rating 5/5). They look small, but at the end of the meal I was full. Don't get the cheese, saw people take it off and not eat it. Got wagyu a5 skewer (rating 4/5), but it was very small. The tongue skewer was delicious (5/5), but only slightly bigger than the a5. I heard the lychee pork belly is the best, but they ran out when I was there. Don't get the gyudon kimchi... it tasted like it was store bought (rating 2/5) and we didn't finish it. The entree could use a small salad to feel more complete. The variety of sauces and spices are delicious , and daikon is good as a free side. For a good taste, it is important to use the pasteurized egg to enhance the taste of the burger with the rice. Cute for a date as it reminds you of Japan restaurants, but I personally don't plan to come again with so many other choices around and felt the skewers should have been bigger. What I do appreciate is that this place helps you focus on the different tastes you can get when switching sauces, spices, and pasteurized egg. Glad I came once though as it was a different experience in LA. read more

I had high hopes for this place but my experience left me feeling pretty underwhelmed and disappointed. Several mishaps occurred that definitely need to be fixed before grand opening. This restaurant is incredibly limited in seating. It's pretty much Kazunori style with bar seating around the open kitchen where you are side by side with the people dining next to you. There's maybe 20-24 spots? They also had some outdoor seating but I honestly don't know how the front of house was managing the wait list. The expected wait times are way off. We were told to be seated around 7 but we actually got seated closer to 9; we waited almost 2 hours. The person managing the front of house was running around like a headless chicken, but not effectively managing the list. We were next on the waitlist and told to check in with the host. They ended up giving our seat away to a party behind us. We were willing to break our group into doubles but not sure if our point got across. We ended up waiting almost 45 minutes after - it was just super chaotic and disorganized. The other issue is that they need to be more specific about being a member of Chubby to get the discount and unlimited rice and soup. If you're a member of Chubby Cattle, that doesn't extend to this restaurant. But we were told at the end of the night that points could be transferred? The host said we could transfer points later after the app was downloaded. When we tried to clarify what the host meant, she said actually we had already paid so the points could no longer be transferred. Was pretty miffed about that. As for the food, it's okay. Skewers were tasty, especially the finger meat. The patty itself is super tiny. Adding cheese is not really worth it. They also serve the patties at different times, so sometimes you can be done while someone else is still waiting for their piece. Overall, didn't feel like it was worth the price. You also have to account for luck and timing. After we sat down, a bunch of people ended up leaving. However, earlier in the night people were sitting and drinking. So account for longer wait times when it's earlier as people might not want to leave. In summary, I would not return to this place again. Food was okay. Not worth the almost 2 hour wait. read more

Been wanting to try this place for a while now since it reminded me of Hikiniku to Come in Japan so I wanted to experience the same nostalgia. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I had expected. 1) They recently took away the reservation option, so you have to get there early and put your name down on the waitlist. My friends put their names down around 4:40 pm, but we weren't seated til ~ 7 pm due to the limited number of seats inside. 2) Upon ordering, I learned that they don't do free refills on rice or soup unless you have a Chubby membership. Otherwise it's an extra $3. So when I was eating my patties, I felt like I was trying to save my rice to last the entire meal. 3) I ordered the combo/package with 3 patties. I was a bit surprised by how small the patties were. Additionally, I didn't get my 2nd patty until my friends already received their 3rd patty. After they finished their meals, they had to wait an extra ~10-15 min for me before I received my 3rd patty. Even though I didn't have a great experience, the staff were super nice. But overall, I think I would rather go to Hikiniku to Come in Japan. read more

Ever since this place opened, I've been wanting to try it, but they only operated in the evenings. When they started offering lunch service, I finally had the chance to visit. They open at noon, and the waitlist is available before opening. The wait wasn't too long, and the hostess came out to make sure everyone in each party was present before seating. This is definitely not a spot for large groups. Most of the seating is at the bar, with a few tables outside. Ordering is done through your phone. Even though my cell reception was a little weak, I was still able to place my order without any issues. There's also a self-serve water station, or you can order drinks from the menu. I ordered the two-burger combo with the A5 steak soup. Overall, everything was really good, and I'd definitely come back to try more items on the menu. The burgers are cooked medium-rare and were incredibly juicy and flavorful. The A5 soup was rich and savory as well. If you're a member, you also get unlimited soup and rice, which is a nice bonus. Overall, I had a great experience and would happily return. If you're looking for high-quality burgers and don't mind a more casual, self-service ordering setup, Chubby Don is worth checking out. read more

Soft opening. Fifteen minute wait for counter seating and tables. Chubby Don is such a fun and delicious dining experience! It feels like you're in Japan. The charcoal-grilled Wagyu hamburger patties and kushiyaki skewers were all delicious and it's fun watching them grill everything in front. We loved cheese Wagyu hamburger patty, the uni bowl (weekly special), and the sirloin paired with uni and caviar! There's so many topping to try too. Yummy yakitori and beef hamburger patties! This place is finally open and they are currently doing soft opening. first come first serve. The wait can be long since the place is very small with limited seating. However you can add yourself to the wait list in person before they open, this actually saved the waiting time. The ordering process is easy and fast. You order online through the QR code on your table. The yakitori I had for beef tongue and chicken were both tender and juicy! The soup was also very flavorful. The hamburger patties were juicy, it was not seasoned but they provide many different sauces to dip. Overall it was a great experience and brings me back to Japan! read more

Chubby Don has been all the social media hype as of late. Having seen so many photos and viral reviews, I had to try Chubby Don for myself. Actually, I've never had Hikiniku to Come or other similar hamburg restaurants in Japan or Asia, so this is my formal first time trying hamburg by the grill in this fashion. Being so viral, there is still quite a wait. I came at 5:30 and still had to wait a half hour to be seated. But the staff are super attentive. The restaurant is small but super clean. Bar seating only but we got to watch all the grilling right there. I ended up ordering a kushiyaki and hamburg combo and sharing with my wife. For the kushiyaki, we got beef tongue, lychee pork, and zucchini with mentaiko. I loved the lychee pork and mentaiko zucchini, both were extremely flavorful. Chubby Don comes with a wide array of sauces. I ended up prioritizing the hamburg sauce and the daikon with ponzu. I put both sauces on rice and they were amazing. For the hamburg, I asked them to add the cheese and cheese snow, as that was popular. The cheese was nothing special, but the hamburg was amazing. Apparently it was 70% A5 wagyu and 30% angus. The beef was super juicy and soft. Amazing restaurant, with amazing service. Worth the hype. A bit expensive, but worth the investment. I would come back. read more

A delicious spot for hamburg rice. I was most impressed by the lychee pork belly skewer, hamburg patty, and the friendly workers. The only thing is the wait can be pretty long, but I think the wait will decrease as they become more efficient. -Hamburg Patty: The meat here is seasoned perfectly. Can also add cheese to this. There's also different sauces you can try with this. I personally enjoyed both the ponzu sauce the most with this patty. -Beef Tongue Soup: There is a strong pepper flavor. -Lychee Pork Belly Skewer: A fantastic skewer. You can really taste the lychee in this. The lychee is fresh and juicy despite being grilled. -Beef Tongue Skewer: Very impressive beef tongue. I liked the thickness of this as well. Probably the most tender skewer I had during this meal. -Asparagus Skewer: Asparagus was fresh and had a nice fresh crunch to it. -Zucchini with Mentaiko Skewer: Pretty good. -Oyster: Juicy oyster. read more

First of its kind in the U.S. and soft opening so there's bounds to be issues with a concept like this. I'm gonna compare what it attempts to copy in Hikiniku to come. Service: Servers were attentive and nice throughout the process. Food would take a while to come out, but that's due to the logistics of figuring out what should serve out first. Food: I thought the food was good, but not as good as the original Hikiniku. Price: I knew that once this spot would open in the U.S. it would be significantly more expensive than the dupe. I paid $29-$30 for 2 people in Japan. Whereas I paid $85-$90 here in the USA. Obviously over here is much more expensive, but paying $15 a meal then paying $30-$35, then having to add tip just sucks. Overall: I think the food is good to try since it's the first of its kind here, service was kind of attentive. It's worth trying once. read more

Thank you April for a wonderful meal and excellent service! I was able to dine in during soft opening today - I ordered the 2 hamburger patties with 3 kushiyaki (picked a5 Wagyu, thick cut beef tongue, caramelized pineapple) combo and additional negima (chicken and scallion) and lychee pork belly. The lychee pork belly was probably my favorite (tip: add a little bit of yakiniku salt to balance the sweetness of the lychee and it's perfect)! The lychee is sweet and juicy and compliments the cooked pork belly so well - I let it sit on the hot plate a little longer and it crisped up one side so nicely. Probably added that I really like lychee! I never imagined it in a dish with meat before, but I loved it! The wagyu broth is a nice refresher throughout the meal, it is very light. I did prefer the plain patty over the cheese patty - only because the American cheese was too "cheeseburger" to me and I thought the original patty I ate first was so perfectly flavored and juicy that the cheese one in comparison, overpowered the patty! I did try to put my pasteurized egg over the original patty (and failed) but it complimented the course with having it mixed into the rice. I enjoyed all the skewers, especially the nice caramelized pineapple, like a sweet treat to end dinner with. I'd be perfectly content coming back for another combo or just order tons of kushiyaki! It was nice being able to watch everything be cooked and prepared while dining- even watched them top the pineapples with sugar and add the mentaiko to the zucchinis before grilling. It's like watching them work like a well oiled machine! Can't wait to come back for some late night eats (I heard they're planning to be open until 1-2am!). I really want more lychee pork belly skewers as I type this. read more

Tried Chubby Don during a tasting event! Got the $35 combo (member rate). It came with 2 hamburger, rice & soup (unlimited refills with membership), pasteurized egg, and one veggie and two protein skewer. Also got the $2 add on for cheese. The seating surrounded the kitchen so that you can see your food being made fresh. There is also a mini grill for each seat so that your hamburger and skewers will stay warm and toasty. However, do wish the AC system circulated a bit better as it was quite hot inside even in the evening. Service was friendly but, as expected during a new opening, they are still figuring out how things work and getting orders correctly and promptly. Food was tasty and the quality speaks. - Hamburger: nicely seasoned and made fresh daily. - Zucchini with mentaiko skewer: I'm happy that they actually put more fish roe on it than their stock photo. - Lychee pork belly: sweet, the pork is wrapped around the fruit. Unique and i liked it - beef tongue skewer, wagyu skewer: standard. the latter was actually on the drier side. - pickled radish: free! and very tasty with a kick~ unfortunately ran out on my side of the table so i only managed to grab some after the ppl next to me left. - lemon sparkling water: had a bitterness to it since it marinaded with the peel/lemon slice inside. I'd get the lychee one instead next time. the two have the same calories anyways! read more

If you've never tried Japan's version of hamburger over rice, this is probably as close as you're gonna get in both taste and experience. Chubby Don's spot at Santa Anita mall has been sitting here for years and I am so happy that it's finally open. Burgers cooked over charcoal, served with rice, and your choice of various sauces and spices to change things up if you want. I got the 2 burger combo with 3 skewers and couldn't have been more pleased with the food. The burgers look small at first glance, but you'll quickly realize you have more than enough food by the time you're onto your second patty. The skewers are all really tasty with the beef tongue being a BIG standout as amazingly tasty. The rice is nice and fresh and the soup has a nice peppery kick to it. One thing I have to call out by itself -- the cheese. The American looking slice on the burger is scrumptious but the cheese "snow" they shred over the patty is out of this world. I personally didn't expect how good it would be and kind of regret not getting cheese on both of my burgers. The staff are all very kind and I really appreciated how on top of things they were. In terms of the restaurant itself, it is a little on the smaller side but there's enough space in between each chair that you don't feel crowded. The price is a little on the higher side, but I think the taste of the food and the overall combination of food makes it worth it. I want to go back and get more cheese, like right now. read more

The overall experience still has some room for improvement, particularly when it comes to the speed of service. The meat portions felt quite small compared to the price, especially when compared with the original concept in Japan. There was also a rather long wait between the first and second servings of meat, possibly because the grilling station was having difficulty keeping up with the orders. I completely understand that the restaurant is still in its early stages, and I hope this feedback will be helpful as the team continues to improve and refine the experience. I look forward to visiting again after the grand opening! read more

Chubby Don has been occupying a corner of the Santa Anita Mall in Arcadia for a good minute...silent...waiting...building hype. And now it's finally open! So let's dive into this certified Hikuniku to come from Japan dupe (full disclaimer: I am absolutely fed up with Chubby Group restaurants in general so I have explicit bias). Waitlist and wait times: 2/5. I got here a full 15 minutes ahead of when they open for dinner, put my name down, and my wait was a grand total of 2 hours! I'm not 100% sure if they were still in soft opening, but the waitlist was a bit of a mess. Despite being 2nd in line at one point, I was told I was supposed to check in an hour ago? I saw a party that asked for patio seating, was told they couldn't do patio seating, then was told they're setting up the patio and they would be seated next, and then were never seated. Might be a point to polish. Food and interior: 3/5. So the food is definitely solid and they did a very excellent job of blatantly ripping off the interior concept of fancy Japanese hamburg steak from Hikuniku to come (down to the boxes of seasoning and bar seating). However, there were definitely some flaws. First, our grills were never turned on and they serve the hamburg steak patties rare/med rare depending on the phase of the moon apparently. Meat was good for sure, but the inconsistency, the slightly small serving size, coupled with the grills not being immediately on when we were seated was a miss. Another mild complaint I had was that rice and soup refills were locked behind a paywall; you essentially had to either have or purchase a membership to get rice refills. Like...okay I get that you want to sell that but rice refills...let's not pretend like you can't refill rice without hemorrhaging money. Service: 4/5. Our server was Dylan. First things first, Dylan is excellent I have literally 0 complaints about Dylan. Now for the second thing, we were a party of 3, we each got 3 patties and they all came at different times at different temps. Consistency and operations are definitely things I think can be improved, but in terms of overall helpfulness and friendliness I think service was great. Overall, I'm going to give Chubby Don a solid 3/5...maybe 3.5/5 if I'm feeling super generous. They clearly had a model that they followed, but I think there were definitely some fumbles. Might not be as bad as any live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but until I hear rumors of significant changes I probably won't be back. Sorry, Chubby Don; I tried to like you :( read more

Food: 8/10 The food was pretty good, but I do think it's a little pricey for the portions. Just a heads up--it's not AYCE! Come early and get on the waitlist because they don't take reservations and it can get busy. Ambiance: 8.5/10 Fun and lively atmosphere, but the seating is pretty tight. Overall: 8.5/10 A little pricey, but worth checking out at least once--especially for the A5 and oysters! read more

Nice restaurant with a beautiful decor and atmosphere. It actually reminded me of my recent trip to Japan and one of the hamburger steak restaurants I visited there. Service: 5/5 Our server, Tracey, was exceptional. Even though the restaurant was very busy, she made sure we were well taken care of. She was very attentive to detail and consistently checked that we had everything we needed, including all of our side dishes and everything we ordered. Excellent service! Food: Hamburger Steak: 2/5 Unfortunately, this was a bit disappointing. I ordered the hamburger steak medium rare, but it came out closer to medium-well. Compared to the hamburger steaks I had in Japan, this one was also pretty bland and had very little juice. The cheese hamburger steak was an interesting concept and a little different, but unfortunately the meat was still cooked much more than I preferred. Yakitori Skewers: 3/5 The A5 short rib was a little bland and didn't have as much flavor as I expected, although the overall flavor of the other skewers was pretty good. Soup: 1/5 Man, where do I start, this soup was extremely salty. Like, "did anyone taste this before it left the kitchen?" I honestly couldn't finish it. Overall, the restaurant has a great concept, nice decor, and fantastic service, but the food was pretty hit-or-miss for me. Hopefully they can work on the seasoning and cooking temperature of the hamburger steak, because I really wanted to love this place. read more

The effort to emulate Japan was nice. Quality of food is almost there. Dylan the server was knowledgeable and helpful. I was disappointed in the amount of food, 2 little pieces of beef tongue, 2 little pieces of pineapple, 4 little dog treat size waygu beef skewer, 2 little beef patties, rice, and soup for $40... truly just the disappointment in price to food ratio. Plates are real small.. thankfully I came here myself to check it out before deciding whether to bring a group. read more

Chubby Don - $40 set. beef tongue skewer (2 pcs) , patty ball in the back, and wagyu skewer (4 pcs). - Japanese Near Me - Arcadia, California

Overall, a pretty good experience, especially considering they are still in their soft opening phase. The food quality was good, and I liked the concept of having smaller portions so you can try a few different things. The wagyu hamburger steak was definitely my favorite. It was juicy and flavorful without being overly fatty, which can sometimes happen with wagyu. It also reminded me a little of a Japanese-style loco moco, especially with the rice and egg. Another highlight was the mentaiko zucchini. I honestly didn't expect much from it, but it turned out to be one of the best things I ordered. Very flavorful and worth trying. The foie gras, on the other hand, was TINY. I knew it was an add-on and wasn't expecting a huge portion, but this was almost miniature-sized. It tasted fine, but I probably wouldn't order it again. Members can get unlimited rice and beef soup. They have quite a few sauces and seasonings at the table, so it's fun to try different combinations with the meat. I also really liked that you can help yourself to the pickled radish. Service was good overall. We waited a little while before getting seated, but the restaurant itself is quite small with limited indoor seating, so I can understand why there may be a wait. They also have outdoor seating available. A lot of things are self-service, including some of the condiments and water, but the staff were still attentive when we needed something. One thing to note is that they don't really have dessert, although they do serve alcohol. read more

Really didn't think Chubby Don was anything too special - and especially upset about the flow and messiness of the grand opening. My food items arrived at very different times - I got my kushiyaki a whole 20 minutes before my hamburger patties and then I had to wait 15 minutes just for rice and then once I got my first patty, it took 30 minutes before I got the second one. Also I arrived at the time of my reservation but had to wait an extra hour after. It's very small and limited seating inside. Lots of smoke inside the restaurant. My favorite kushiyaki was the mentaiko zucchini. The cheese on the patty doesn't have much taste. Rice was dry not fluffy. Honestly, pretty disappointing overall. read more

Came on a Monday evening after work and it was the shortest wait time we've seen so we decided to wait and try it out. Took about an hour and was seated immediately. The host and chefs were all really friendly and helpful with questions about the menu. I went with the 2 patty, 2 meat skewers, 1 vegetable skewer options. It was delicious! I went with the a5 short rib skewer with wasabi (pretty much meat butter), wagyu finger meat with wasabi, and the zucchini with mentaiko kushi. For the patties I ordered one with cheese which came with a slice of American cheese and grated Parmesan. The meal comes with rice, a soft boiled egg, grated daikon, and what I believe is pork broth soup which was seasoned well (a bit heavier on the pepper side). One of my favorite things about this place is the sauce/seasoning bar is at your hands. You can get as much green chili, radish, seasoning dips or whatever you please as you're eating your meal. I'd absolutely recommend chubby don as I'm already looking forward to going back already myself. read more

Visited Chubby don for the first time, very good service and food. Reservation only at this time so make sure you reserve a spot before coming in. The Wagyu hamburger steak is delicious we ordered the 2 meat patty plus 3 skewers. The zucchini mentaiko skewer is and Wagyu skewers was very good. Meat was very tender and juicy. Staff were all very nice and accommodating. We tried on patty with cheese and one with it and honestly without the cheese taste very good. The natural juicy umami of the Wagyu I preferred more without the cheese. One improvement is they should torch the cheese because the grill is hot enough for the cheese to melt. I think this would make the texture even better. Overall ambiance is good, not too loud and you can still talk but you're searing very close to one another and other parties so conversations are heard amongst each other. If you have there member plus rice and soup is unlimited! Price is relatively fair but feels like the hamburger meat is a bit small. read more
