Came here for my birthday and got the combo E. I must say that thick gyutan was amazing, but I also loved their beef tongue soup! The inside of the restaurant is small so the tables are chairs are small. They also have bar seating. I wish they would add bag hooks underneath the table tho. This review is for their doordash takeout & the late night hour menu. - Creamy Uni Pasta (4/5): this dish was probably worth the price but the lowest tier of Uni pasta I've had. The Uni pieces tasted like it was frozen Uni. The sauce was flavorful but way too salty. - Kansai Style Beef Tongue Tendon Curry Rice (1/5): everything about this just sounded and looked like false advertisement. It looked nothing like the picture on Yelp and DoorDash. It was curry with not a single piece of meat??? Curry with straight carrots. - Thick Cut Beef Tongue Skewer (3/5): This was good but also falsely advertised in terms of the size of the skewer. In the picture it looked pretty big (similar to more traditional Japanese restaurants) but what I got was legit the size of a Starburst. The menu advertises Japanese A5 Waygu short rib, but the quality I received was definitely not Japanese A5. The short rib was lean, not fatty. The bento box comes with curry, by the time I got home, the curry already got mixed with other side dishes. Perhaps it's a better idea to put the curry in a different container? The best thing to get is their beef tongue hands down. Came here with a group of friends. I got the combo E, fiancee got the combo C (I think or was it F). Combo E includes the thick gyutan and thinly sliced short ribs marinated in yakiniku sauce. Short rib was good but compared to the Gyutan it was not memorable. Short ribs you can get anywhere else, but a good Gyutan is hard to find. Next time I think I would just get the combo A, and just have all the beef tongue. They give you a little hot plate in front so you can cook it more and keep your food/meat warm. This set includes a salad as well as a curry and soup. I always love the beef soup, simple homey and just delicious. Curry is a bit forgettable, I'll be honest, but goes well with the rice. Salad is fresh. You can get free unlimited sides if you have the membership but I do not. I was surprisingly pretty full even though the food may not seem like a lot at first. Prices are a bit high but for the quality of cut, I guess I can understand it since beef tongue is expensive and they're serving the best part of it. A bit warm in the store but it's a hot day and they have grills on. They were out of the kimchi beef tongue, will have to get it next time. The Ikura rice is an upgrade option and it looks like they give a lot of Ikura. They can cook it for you as well, and you can cook it on your own as well so can do self service. We got lucky with no reservations and got to sit at the main bar. They don't have any group tables so it's ideal for a small group and willing to sit shoulder to shoulder. I typically don't eat gyutan (beef tongue) but was intrigued by this concept. From the bar you can see them grilling the meat on an open fire like grill. Each combo entree set is about $35-$55 and feeds one person. The combos are set and sides and sauces can be added. The thick meat is so tender! Got the 2 different combos and beef finger so we could try all 3 meats. I was a fan of the beef tongue even though it was thick. It was cooked perfectly and if i wanted it more cooked, i ciuld heat it up on the little grill. I thought it was a lot of food since it came with salad, miso, rice and curry. We each ordered another side of meat to feel content for the meal. Also, If you're not used to eating beef tongue, the thick cut might not be for you; recommend ordering half thick cut half short rib. The sauce it came with was pretty good though, otherwise the beef tongue isn't seasoned. Try to grab a bar/counter seat if possible since they have the little reheating grills there for you to self heat any meats you want. Now to the food, something that must be experienced at some point in time in your life and something that I want to make a regular stop at. Tongue enthusiasts, unite! This place is dedicated to wagyu gyutan and even uses the Moto cut, prized for its heavy marbling and meltingly tender texture. The idea here is that the tongue is served medium rare, and you finish it to your liking on the hot stone. Our server mentioned that Combo E was their most popular set, but they had already sold out for the day. Instead, we ordered Combo D (Ultra Thick Gyutan & Japan A5 Finger Meats Wagyu Set) and Combo F (Ultra Thick Gyutan & American Wagyu Karubi). Both were good, though I think I would've preferred Combo E for the A5 Short Rib, or mayhaps going all-in on the Ultra Thick Gyutan Set next time. The Gyutan Miso dipping sauce was the only refillable side that we kept asking more of. It's the perfect accompaniment to the rich, beefy flavor. The meal did hit an early bump. The first round of meats came out inconsistently prepared and more cooked than intended. Thankfully, the team recognized the issue and sent out replacement plates that showcased the tongue the way it was meant to be served. Ironically, the mishap turned into an interesting tasting experience because we got to try the tongue across the entire spectrum from medium rare to well done. I can confidently say that medium rare is the sweet spot: incredibly tender and juicy! The more cooked pieces required a lot more jaw work and lost some of that delicate texture that makes the Moto cut so special. A big shoutout to our server Anthony for taking excellent care of us! The kitchen had a great service recovery. The modern Japanese-inspired, open-kitchen concept felt so warm and inviting! It's a cute spot for a casual dinner or special occasion. My only hesitation is the value proposition. Came here during peak dinner time so the plaza was packed and parking was a bit of a struggle since the spots are pretty compact. Heads up if youre coming with a larger group. We came as a party of 4 and ended up having to split into two separate tables which wasnt ideal. The seating arrangement overall wasnt really set up for groups. The seats are also glued to the floor so you cant move them around and there are no hooks or baskets to hang your jacket or store your bag. It made things feel really inconvenient especially in such a cramped space. If youre sitting on the side just be careful not to accidentally bump into a waiter passing by. Food did come out fairly quickly though. My husband and I ordered combo C and E. I had to ask for water without lemon due to an allergy and that ended up taking the longest out of everything which was a little frustrating. I wasnt really a fan of combo E so the price didnt feel that worth it for what we got. I think the value might make more sense if youre a member but as a regular customer it felt a little steep. I was super excited to try out this place because I love beef tongue! Since they recently just opened, I think there could be room for improvements in terms of the quality of the food. Our group all got the Combo E for the short rib however we noticed we all had different platings and quality. For the short ribs, mines was cooked more medium versus the rest of my group had more medium rare- with obvious bigger pieces. Sure, it might be weighed meat so it wouldnt matter, but visually it looked portioned differently. The beef tongue on the other hand.... was VERY difficult to bite down onto. I had to use my hands to rip the meat off- while my partners piece was very tender when we traded a piece. Upon closer look, it did look like the beef was cut with the grain instead of against. I also stumbled across social media feeds, and saw that the bar seating had the grilling aspect to it. We were seating by the window so I had no idea this was an option. Kinda disappointing paying the same price for a lesser experience. Additionally they feature the curry and soup having many pieces of wagyu- but we all recalled having one or two bites. The cherry on top was when we found out that only one membership would be allowed a discount per visit. Despite 2/3 people in our group having memberships, the manager only allowed one discount- even if we offered to do split checks. We didn't really get an explanation why? But I just thought it was kinda wack to pay for a membership that doesnt even work. Nonetheless, the meats were seasoned well and the sauce was good so I did enjoy the set overall. As someone who normally avoids beef tongue, I was genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed Chubby Tan's gyutan. The ultra-thick gyutan completely changed my perception of beef tongue--it was tender, juicy, and flavorful without being overly chewy or having the gamey taste I usually associate with it. We ordered the Combo D Ultra Thick Gyutan & Japan A5 Finger Meats Wagyu Set and the Combo C Ultra Thick Gyutan & Classic Gyutan Set, both of which were excellent. The premium cuts were well-marbled and delicious over the charcoal grill, which added a subtle smokiness that elevated every bite. One of my favorite additions was the pasteurized egg topping. Mixing it with the grilled meats created a rich, velvety texture and added an extra layer of umami that made the beef even more indulgent. Beyond the food, the charcoal grilling experience and cozy ambiance made the meal feel special. Came in for a spontaneous date night! Decided to come before it opened since it's pretty popular. My husband and I were the first here (about 10 minutes prior to opening), but pretty soon more came. I was so excited to get finally see a grilled beef tongue restaurant open up closer to me since we are big fans of the Gyutan in Mitsuwa Costa Mesa. We came allll the way from pasadena to try this and it was disappointing. We got two thick cut sets and one classic on the side. Each thick cut set was $54, definitely not cheap. Their meats are inconsistent. Each set has about 6 pieces, only 3-4 pieces in every set are edible. The rest is so chewy I cannot even bite through. I told the server and they were nice enough to give me 3 extra pieces to replace them. But I would expect every piece to be high quality, grilled to perfection with a $54 price tag. read more
