Got the 2 different combos and beef finger so we could try all 3 meats. I was a fan of the beef tongue even though it was thick. It was cooked perfectly and if i wanted it more cooked, i ciuld heat it up on the little grill. I thought it was a lot of food since it came with salad, miso, rice and curry. I didnt really like the raddish sauce they gave us since it didnt taste like anything and it was slimey but the other one was good. Tissues are above you need extra since they give 1 napkin. They have a bag storage place as well. Service was amazing. I ordered soda and didnt even know whrn it appeared but my friend asked if i ordered a drink because they all got lychee drink but my drinj didnt come and my soda was on the table already. Also, we thought it was unlimited refills on sides but good thing my friend only got a refill once or twice and the server removed the charges because "he didnt clarify it wasnt unlimited" It is on the pricier side but it comes with alot so i cant compare it to the the other place since the meat is also different. Unfortunately, Chubby TAN just barely missed the mark for me. I came in with a friend close to opening time and we were seated promptly. Service was good, although a bit awkward. The overall ambiance felt like a settling in business that still had a few things to work out. The menu was simple, a couple different combos and some side dishes to select from. We got the combo C which included both the thick cut and classic cut of their beef tongue. We also got a side of their lemon pepper beef tongue. The lemon pepper beef tongue had a good texture, but it came out lukewarm and lacked both the lemon and the pepper flavor. We ended up doing taking some of our own lemon from the combo and using their salt shaker to add more flavor. The combo also left much to be desired. The salad was a comically small portion, while both the curry and the soup were under seasoned and lukewarm. The beef tongue was also lukewarm, although they did provide hot plates to cook and warm up the beef tongue so that wasn't as much of an issue. The classic cut was okay, nothing to write home about. The saving grace was that the thick cut had a wonderful texture. Their miso paste was interesting, but didn't really enhance the flavors of the beef well. I personally would've recommended adding some wasabi to be an accompaniment if that was an option. Overall, the experience was average. It seems to be more of an overhyped place than anything. You've gotta like beef tongue though, 'cause that's their whole thing. They've got different cuts of beef tongue to choose from. They also have A5 short ribs and wagyu options. Tongue enthusiasts, unite! This place is dedicated to wagyu gyutan and even uses the Moto cut, prized for its heavy marbling and meltingly tender texture. The idea here is that the tongue is served medium rare, and you finish it to your liking on the hot stone. Our server mentioned that Combo E was their most popular set, but they had already sold out for the day. Instead, we ordered Combo D (Ultra Thick Gyutan & Japan A5 Finger Meats Wagyu Set) and Combo F (Ultra Thick Gyutan & American Wagyu Karubi). Both were good, though I think I would've preferred Combo E for the A5 Short Rib, or mayhaps going all-in on the Ultra Thick Gyutan Set next time. The Gyutan Miso dipping sauce was the only refillable side that we kept asking more of. It's the perfect accompaniment to the rich, beefy flavor. The meal did hit an early bump. The first round of meats came out inconsistently prepared and more cooked than intended. Thankfully, the team recognized the issue and sent out replacement plates that showcased the tongue the way it was meant to be served. Ironically, the mishap turned into an interesting tasting experience because we got to try the tongue across the entire spectrum from medium rare to well done. I can confidently say that medium rare is the sweet spot: incredibly tender and juicy! The more cooked pieces required a lot more jaw work and lost some of that delicate texture that makes the Moto cut so special. A big shoutout to our server Anthony for taking excellent care of us! The kitchen had a great service recovery. The modern Japanese-inspired, open-kitchen concept felt so warm and inviting! It's a cute spot for a casual dinner or special occasion. My only hesitation is the value proposition. Came here during peak dinner time so the plaza was packed and parking was a bit of a struggle since the spots are pretty compact. Heads up if youre coming with a larger group. We came as a party of 4 and ended up having to split into two separate tables which wasnt ideal. The seating arrangement overall wasnt really set up for groups. The seats are also glued to the floor so you cant move them around and there are no hooks or baskets to hang your jacket or store your bag. It made things feel really inconvenient especially in such a cramped space. If youre sitting on the side just be careful not to accidentally bump into a waiter passing by. Food did come out fairly quickly though. My husband and I ordered combo C and E. I had to ask for water without lemon due to an allergy and that ended up taking the longest out of everything which was a little frustrating. I wasnt really a fan of combo E so the price didnt feel that worth it for what we got. I think the value might make more sense if youre a member but as a regular customer it felt a little steep. I might give it another shot to try a different combo but would probably avoid coming during peak hours. read more

I was super excited to try out this place because I love beef tongue! Since they recently just opened, I think there could be room for improvements in terms of the quality of the food. Our group all got the Combo E for the short rib however we noticed we all had different platings and quality. For the short ribs, mines was cooked more medium versus the rest of my group had more medium rare- with obvious bigger pieces. Sure, it might be weighed meat so it wouldnt matter, but visually it looked portioned differently. The beef tongue on the other hand.... was VERY difficult to bite down onto. I had to use my hands to rip the meat off- while my partners piece was very tender when we traded a piece. Upon closer look, it did look like the beef was cut with the grain instead of against. I also stumbled across social media feeds, and saw that the bar seating had the grilling aspect to it. We were seating by the window so I had no idea this was an option. Kinda disappointing paying the same price for a lesser experience. Additionally they feature the curry and soup having many pieces of wagyu- but we all recalled having one or two bites. The cherry on top was when we found out that only one membership would be allowed a discount per visit. Despite 2/3 people in our group having memberships, the manager only allowed one discount- even if we offered to do split checks. We didn't really get an explanation why? But I just thought it was kinda wack to pay for a membership that doesnt even work. Nonetheless, the meats were seasoned well and the sauce was good so I did enjoy the set overall. I must say the short ribs were delicious but I didn't like the ultra thick beef tongue as much as I thought I would. It was thiiick and even after I cut it into smaller pieces the meat was a bit tougher than I expected. I prefer to eat the regular beef tongue and will probably go with that in the future. If you have membership, you can get unlimited refills on salad, soup, rice, curry, and two of the sauces. The soup was really good and the wasabi tasted fresh. However, the wasabi will cost $1 extra if you want to add on as a side. Initially, when I saw the portion of meat, I was a bit worried that it won't be enough. There's this very cute server that helped my wife and I today. They showed us the ropes to everything and explained the menu thoroughly. Allowing my mouth to be stuffed with luscious juicy meats. Honestly, the thick-cut beef tongue set at Chubby Tan was incredible. The gyutan had a great smoky char on the outside, but the inside stayed super tender with that perfect snap you look for in a good tongue cut. Squeezing a little fresh lemon over it balanced out the richness nicely. ​The sides in the set were just as good as the meat, too. The wagyu curry over white rice could honestly be its own meal, and the wagyu miso paste gave everything a really good savory kick. I've been to many Chubby Group restaurants, and they've always delivered great food and exceptional service. Unfortunately, Chubby Tan fell well below those standards. During a busy lunch rush, there was only one server covering the entire restaurant. I don't blame the server--they were clearly doing their best--but the restaurant appeared to be understaffed. We ordered through a QR code within two minutes of being seated, then waited 45 minutes without a single check-in or update before I had to ask if our soup and salad could be served first. The food itself was enjoyable once it finally arrived, but the long wait and lack of communication overshadowed the meal. Based on my past experiences with other Chubby Group restaurants, I know they're capable of providing outstanding hospitality. I hope this location improves its staffing and service because it currently falls well below the standard I've come to expect from the brand. read more

My bf and I came around 8pm on a weekday so the wait wasn't too bad. The ambiance was nice, cozy, and honestly one of the better parts of the experience. You're basically paying to squeeze the lemon yourself while staring at a cup that's 90% ice. Unfortunately, my thick gyutan was where things started going downhill. Compared to my bf's order, mine was clearly overcooked. The meat was already cold by the time it reached our table. Since we weren't seated at the bar we couldn't even throw it back on the grill to warm it up. The table also felt cramped for 2 people and didn't leave much room once the food started coming out. If you're coming here, do yourself a favor and ask for bar seating. The thick gyutan was tender in some bites but overall lacked flavor. The bigger issue was the inconsistency. 2 out of my 3 pieces were EXTREMELY chewy, to the point where I literally couldn't bite through them no matter how much I chewed. I even had my bf try one because I thought maybe I was being dramatic and he spent a solid minute pulling at it with his hands just to tear off a bite. Meanwhile, the thick gyutan in his combo was perfectly tender. Maybe I got the bad end of the cut but for the price that level of inconsistency was unacceptable. The A5 short rib in Combo E was fine. Not bad, not amazing, just... there. The classic gyutan was easily our favorite item of the night but even then I'm not sure it's worth coming back for. The portions were also surprisingly small considering the high prices. The sides were hit or miss. The soup was flavorful, the salad had a refreshing dressing, and the miso sauce was surprisingly good. The curry was also pretty good but a little salty for my taste. As for the yam sauce, it was straight up slimy goo that tasted like nothing. Since we have the membership, most of the sides came with free refills, which was nice. What wasn't nice was getting charged almost $1 for a squeeze of wasabi. At these prices, I wasn't expecting to have to budget separately for condiments. The only thing that really saved the experience was Caleb. He was attentive, informative, and easily the highlight of the night. If I could give separate ratings, Caleb would be getting five stars!! The ultra thick gyutan- It was so good, Tender and amazing flavor. Theres instructions on how to eat the beef tongue, first to try it as is, then lemon, yam, miso and with curry. My absolutely favorite was with the miso and least favorite was with the yam. 5/5 Japan A5 finger meats Wagyu- this was absolutely my favorite and a must order. The a5 finger meats were tender, fatty, and I love that it's glazed with a yakiniku sauce. So good with the house salad and white rice. 5/5 A5 short rib- It was close to closing time, so they didn't have enough short rib for me, so Matthew hooked it with up another plate of a5 finger meats on top of whatever short rib was left. The short rib came out with wasabi. Got to check out Chubby Tan during their soft opening in LA. They're serving up some thick and delicious wagyu beef tongue. Since it's still soft opening, reservations are required. They're part of the Chubby Group, so you already know they're serious about what they're doing. Came on a weeknight around 8:45pm and it was still busy. The menu is pretty focused right now, which I like because it feels like they're really dialing in their core items. We ordered two sets, one with the thick tongue and regular tongue, and another with the thick tongue and A5 short ribs. They cook the meat to about medium rare, then bring out a hot plate so you can finish it to your liking. The beef tongue is definitely the star. Thick, juicy, and when you sear it a bit more on the hot plate it gets that crispy edge which makes it even better. Each set comes with sides like curry, salad, beef tongue soup, and rice. We upgraded one of the rice bowls to the ikura and egg rice which was really good and worth it. If you're part of their Chubby Plus membership, you get discounts and unlimited sides which is a nice perk. Service was great. April took care of us and she was super nice and welcoming. Overall I really enjoyed the meal. The meats go so well with rice, I could easily eat multiple bowls. Definitely looking forward to coming back. read more

Went to Chubby Tan for the first time tonight - was super excited because I have passed by before and it looked SO good and I love beef tongue. It did not disappoint! We ordered Combo D and Combo E, along with all the add ons (lemon pepper gyutan is highly recommended!!) and a bowl of ikura don. Everything was delicious. The super thick cut gyutan was really tender and juicy. We also got a plate of the karubi for ordering more than $50 - it was so well marinated and yummy! There was plenty of food, ended up taking about half or more of it home. On top of all that, service was amazing. Caleb took care of us and checked in on us often, even grilled the beef tongue on the hot plate for us to have us try it when it's more crispy. He was really helpful and knowledgeable and made our ordering process super easy with recommendations and by answering our questions. My sister is going to kill me for coming without her, so I'll likely be back with her as soon as we both find a free slot in our schedules read more

Until coming to Chubby TAN, I had no idea of all the ways gyutan could be cooked and prepared. Food was fresh and do good quality. The different sauces were also fantastic. Food was more than filling, needed to take a third of it home. Would definitely come back to get my gyutan fix . It's nice to see the chefs in the middle preparing the food. Ambiance is relaxing and would be good to come as a couple or on your own. Not much seating if you come as a group though. Our server Caleb was very informative and helped us to use the hot plate for the gyutan. He checked on us multiple times to make sure everything was good. read more

Overall: I normally don't write poor reviews, but for the price I am paying, it's disappointing. The lack of attention from servers, the little amount of food for the price all contributed to this rating. Service: 0 stars. Service was extremely poor for the price I am paying for the meal. Even though we had a reservation, we waited 15-20 min before we were seated. After seating, our server did not even come over to us. I noticed he would come over to explain the menu to others but he completely ignored our table. We had trouble waiving down a waiter for a water refill and ended up not bothering. Didn't feel like we were taken care of at all. In addition, food came out super disjointed. My partner got his food first and I had to wait 5-10 minutes for my food. My partner wanted to wait for me to get my food but due to the nature of the food, it was best to eat right away so it wouldn't get cold. I understand this is still a soft opening, however, I find it ridiculous the lack of service I got at this restaurant for the price I paid. Food: We ordered Combo D & E. The Gyutan was very chewy and stringy - they advertised this as super tender and I didn't find this the case at all. I had trouble eating it because it was very chewy. The A5 Short Rib and A5 Finger meats were good, but not amazing. I've had A5 Wagyu before and this just tasted like good cuts of meat but definitely not A5 Wagyu quality. Salads have very little dressing, just a splash on top. Soup was nice and warming. Curry was just curry - nothing really special. Ikura & Egg Bowl - It was good, nothing wow though. Overall the food was just OK. I don't know if I got my hopes up because they said it was super tender and good, but Price: for the price I am paying - about $40-50 per set, this is not worth. The set comes with rice, soup, and curry. I was still somewhat hungry after the meal and very unsatisfied. You can get unlimited sides if you have the membership, but I don't find the membership worth it if you don't go to any Chubby Cattle restaurant often. The Atmosphere: Restaurant is very small - with small tables for 2 people or bar seating. This wouldn't be a good place to bring a large group. The styling was nice though. Parking: In Jamboree plaza which can be very crowded during weekend and evenings. Parking can be difficult during peak times. read more
