She brought me only the merchant copy of the receipt which I signed and indicated zero gratuity. I wrote a note: "Meal arrived cold. Three small shrimp in the dish. Server did not ask if everything was okay." AS I WAS RISING FROM THE TABLE, she came over, grabbed the receipt and began reading it, laughing very loudly as I bolted for the door. We ordered beef brisket pho and a rice vermicelli with spring rolls and grilled pork through Skip the Dishes. The beef brisket pho broth did not taste herbal, aromatic, or flavourful as expected. Instead, it tasted like any beef broth with a slight twinge of lime. The beef brisket was so tough that it was crumbling in my mouth. The noodles were starchy, not the slick rice noodles that make pho so enjoyable. The rice vermicelli was dry and starchy and the grilled pork was completely tasteless, which is strange since I would expect it to have a slight smokey flavour from the grill, at the very least. The only redeeming quality about this dish was the grilled Vietnamese ham but it wasn't enough to salvage it. For me, eating this meal was the equivalent of shoving plain white stale rice in your mouth. You do it for sustenance, but not for pleasure.
