Solid pho location at downtown Victoria. We were dining with locals and it was their first time trying Pho Tru and they said that the pho was much better than the pho places they have tried in the area. Better than Pho Boi nearby. Broth is deep, delicious and not too sweet or salty. Small area inside with a few tables. Walk up to the counter to order and pay first. Then wait at a table for your food to arrive. You can grab water at a water station at the corner (cold water). Service was polite & efficient and they got us everything we needed. Table centerpieces were not fully refilled so we had to grab some napkins/chili, etc from another nearby table. Pho places around Victoria just seemed mostly average. I was really trying to avoid touristy places that overcharged and was trying to find a local joint so I ended here. I'm genuinely confused about how close things tasted to being authentic, yet so far simultaneously. Starting off with the spring rolls, the filling was definitely traditional, but the wrapper is just the generic egg roll kind vs rice paper. The fish sauce for dipping was very watery, weak and too sweet for traditional tastes. The pho broth was just ok, if anything it was lighter and less fatty without being too deeply flavored. The grilled pork (as part of the vermicelli) just needed a bit more char, otherwise the lemongrass flavor was great. The place isn't anything fancy inside. Service, although nice, is minimal. Order at the counter, self serve water, pick a table, and get your food delivered to you. read more

This is one of the cruise port stop for us, we were in desperation for pho, no more cruise food lol. We took Uber here, 10 minutes from our dock. Unfortunate experience today. After we placed our order, we were informed that there was no more rice. We requested a refund, they did try to give me cash, but unfortunately we are from out of town and we had paid with our card. We asked for them to refund it back to the card, he said they couldn't because management wasn't there. Miraculously they found some rice and said they could fulfill our order. When our plate came out, the chicken had hair weaved in it. When we brought it to their attention, they didn't apologize and were not happy that we asked that they give us another piece of chicken. When they remade the chicken the rice was cold by that point and our pho was luke warm as well. Customer service was not good. Would not recommend eating here. read more

Coming from Southern California where there is an abundance of Pho places and easy access to lots of herbs, this was a good pho fix, but sadly not one of the best. We came a few minutes before opening (11am) and it took a while to get our rare steak pho. There was a generous portion of meat - much appreciated, thank you. However, there was little to no basil and other herbs, a tiny (cocktail size) piece of lime already in the bowl, had to fish it out to squeeze into soup, could have used doubled the amount and add brightness. Ordered the tofu veggies vermicelli and the banh mi bbq. By far the best banh mi I've had in ages (and I'm from LA where we have good Vietnamese food in the area). Portions were great. Sauces were delicious. I ordered two noodle plates for three kids (12 and under and still had enough food to finish it for them). The wait staff was super friendly. Yum. I always feel that some of the best places I've eaten are these small local restaurants that one stumbles upon on Yelp or when it just happens to be one of the places still open. We were greeted with open arms by the guy behind the counter upon realizing we were a party of 9. Though busy with online orders, he misses having actual groups of diners in the restaurant. This place was as good as any of the good Pho places I've been to back home in the Bay Area. The Saigon Subs, aka Vietnamese Sandwiches, were very tasty the baguette was toasted to a wonderful crunch. I tried both the Lemongrass Pork and Lemongrass Steak, separately, and had a smile ear to ear . The fried spring rolls were so good that we had to order more. The Phos had flavorful broths, yum Everything looked and smelled so good that I dug in right away and completely forgot to take pictures of the rest of our food...except for the menu and the fried spring rolls. This was my 3rd time visiting Victoria and just now found this place. I don't know when I'll find myself back in Victoria, but I will definitely make sure to make this place one of our stops. It's Pho(king) Tru--this is THE place to go for ridiculously tasty pho, banh mi, and spring rolls. I'm sad that it's taken me a quarantine to be introduced to this restaurant, but I'm two orders in and I will certainly be ordering more. If it's your first time ordering from Pho Tru, do yourself a favour and order Kim's Crispy Rolls ($6.50), Grilled Lemongrass Steak Banh Mi ($7.50), and Steak and Brisket Noodle Soup ($12). They are all absolute perfection. Kim's Crispy Rolls*: The blend of the filling--ground pork, shrimp, glass noodles, and vegetables--is what sets it a class above other spring rolls I've had. Not only is the filling scrumptious, but it is also generously portioned to ensure that each bite you take is the same as your first. It goes without saying that you need to dip the spring roll into the accompanying fish sauce. Once the acidity permeates the crunchy, golden exterior, you'll be in spring roll paradise. Grilled Lemongrass Steak Banh Mi*: This is quite possibly one of the best banh mi I've ever had the pleasure of devouring. The baguette is crunchy without venturing into the territory of cutting into your gums (been there, done that). The pickled carrots and daikon brighten up the banh mi with their fresh, sweet taste and crunchy profile. The slices of steak are divinely seasoned, grilled, and again, generously portioned. Honestly, it's hard to pick a star of the show in this banh mi, but I may have to award it to the lime Sriracha aioli: the aioli has some heat from the Sriracha, which is in turn subdued by the tanginess of the lime. This sauce could seriously be bottled and sold separately because I would smother it over all my sandwiches. *The quality of both these items stayed consistent when I ordered them a second time. Two thumbs up for consistency! Steak and Brisket Noodle Soup: I was quite hesitant to order pho for delivery because I wasn't sure how it would be served: Would the broth and noodles be separated? Would the broth even be hot enough to cook the rare steak, or would the rare steak be in the broth already? Would bean sprouts still be given? So many questions loomed over my head; however, I simply could not ignore the glowing reviews of the pho here, so I just went for it. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. Pho Tru exceeded my expectations by (i) separating the broth and noodles with meat into two containers; (ii) placing the bean sprouts and jalapenos in a separate bag; and (iii) providing both hoisin and hot chili sauces (in a yin yang style) inside a mini sauce container. The attention to detail in packaging demonstrated to me how much Pho Tru cares about its quality. Above all, the pho tasted ~pho-nomenal~ with its chewy noodles, flavourful broth, and thinly sliced meat. Between pho or a vermicelli bowl (I ordered the Grilled Lemongrass Pork Salad Bowl last time), I would have to go for the pho again! This is all to say... thank you, Pho Tru, for continuing to provide exceptional and comforting food in these trying times.
