My expectations were low to begin with. I'm not one to brag, but I am from Los Angeles and I think we have some pretty decent pho down here. Whether you get your pho on in the Asian capital of So Cali = the 626, OC Little Saigon 714, or even in the 323/213 Koreantown/Chinatown, I'm proud to say we have some pretty legit pho restaurants available here. My journey took me to Victoria for a wedding for the weekend. The family was craving some Asian food and someone found this place merely for its close proximity from our hotel. Let's just say, it was a blessing. We had a group of about 17, so we phoned in for reservations. They were able to accommodate three separate tables that were all next to one another. This didn't bother us one bit, it's not like we needed a typical round table too all fit on. It was a Friday evening and the place was pretty filled up. With us there, the place looked happening. So if you have a big party, you may want to phone ahead so they can prepare for your arrival. The pho... I ordered #25 on their menu: rare steak, brisket, and meatballs; XL size. The portion was truly XL. At first, I thought they skimped out on the meat but little did I know that it was all sitting at the bottom of the bowl. The stock soup base was good (slightly on the saltier side). Doesn't matter because I always add my endless condiments regardless: sriracha sauce, hoisin sauce, an entire lime tree, and pepper. We did have to ask them for more bean sprouts/basil/lime set up. Down here, every bowl gets their own plate of this. At Green Leaf Bistro, you get one set up for the entire table. We asked and we received, no fuss. I was pretty happy the pho tasted legitimate because trust me when I tell you that I've had some pretty horrible pho in my life. It's really not that hard to screw up either. I got to sample the lemongrass chicken. Real talk, if I wasn't in the mood for some pho then I would definitely would have ordered this dish. Whatever it is that they do to that dark meat chicken, it's fan-f-ing-tastic. Whether you get it on rice or vermicelli noodles, it's darn good stuff right there especially with some nuoc mam dipping sauce. We had the #1 appetizer spring rolls to share for our table. I believe they were vegetarian. It wasn't something that was too impressive but the peanut butter dipping sauce was interesting. I just can't come to the conclusion if I enjoyed it much or not. Overall, the meal was what we needed after being out and about all day, travelling from Vancity earlier that morning. The service was friendly and they gladly brought us the many items we requested from them. The price is what you expect for being in Victoria which is slightly higher but at least the food was great. I can see myself coming back here if I'm ever in this part of the woods again. read more

I'm from Little Saigon, Calif so I'll admit I'm quite picky with Viet food. The fresh spring rolls were alright except there were carrots inside and a) i hate carrots, b) carrots do not belong inside spring rolls so that threw off both the taste and texture for me. The Bo Kho (beef stew) was delicious, with the beef chunks being tender --even the tendons, but damn... those carrots again were still hard inside the stew. Plus I had to ask for lemons to make my own dipping sauce with salt & black pepper for the beef. This traditional French-style stew should come with it. The Brisket Pho was also alright but not spectacular. My Dad ordered the Papaya Salad and the shrimps were plenty and delicious, but not enough Viet herbs to make it authentic. Overall, 3 out of 5, which is very acceptable for a restaurant far away from the "Motherland" or the Little Saigon scene. read more

Today i ordered the family dinner rice with Vietnanese sour soup (canh chua) and clay pot braised fish (Cá Kho Tộ). I am new to the island so my taste buds may be different ... but the type of fish is not right ... it should be catfish and the sour soup has cabbage which is not authentic. My Airbnb host recommended this spot as the best Vietnamese place in Victoria, so my friend and I decided to check it out. We came on a Sunday, a little before 6 pm, and the restaurant was half full. We were seated immediately. My friend is vegetarian, which is one of the things that drew us to this place. I saw on Yelp that there's a special vegetarian section on their menu. To start, we ordered the #70 veggie spring rolls ($6.95) to share. I was torn between whether to get pho or a rice plate, but ultimately went with #40 wonton egg noodle soup with seafood ($12.75). We got the veggie spring rolls first, and unfortunately neither my friend nor I liked them. I thought it was impossible to really mess up spring rolls, but somehow they managed to do that here. They used some kind of potato-like starch (maybe taro?) as the primary filling, and it just had such a weird texture as I was chewing. I would not recommend getting the veggie spring rolls here, though maybe the normal ones are better. My wonton noodle soup was okay. It came with four wontons and an assortment of squid, fish cake, and shrimp. There was also a generous amount of vegetables, primarily broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots. My main problem with this dish was the noodles, which clumped together like they hadn't been cooked properly. The wontons were fine, though more garlicky than I would have expected, and the only problem I had with the seafood was that the squid was too chewy. My friend tried to order one of their veggie egg noodle stir fries, but was told that they were already out of the egg noodles. Keep in mind this was around 6, which is still fairly early for dinner. We were pretty surprised. He ended up going with a crispy noodle stir-fry instead, which was not that good. read more

Number 54. The grilled lemongrass chicken, shredded pork and fried egg One of my favourite meals here at green leaf and it NEVER fails me! I've been eating this dish for years and cannot stop talking about the way they make their chicken. It has the taste of authentic Vietnam, charred to perfection. The hints of lemon grass are beautiful, presentation is impeccable. I've been to 2 locations and the fried egg is the only inconsistency. At the goldstream location it is an actual fried egg, at the blanshard location it is served as an egg cake. Both still good, different sort of taste though. They could provide a little more of the nuoc mum (fish sauce) but, nothing to fret about, we asked for more and they were happy to provide it free of charge. The service was excellent, and very pleasant. I would highly recommend this dish to anyone who loves a good hearty plate! read more

I've visited many times with my parents (who complain about just about every place they eat whether it's a restaurant or private residence) and we love this place. We've tried the seafood udon, beef pho (with and without tripe), Vietnamese crepe with seafood and pork, bbq pork with noodles in coconut milk sauce. All are very tasty. The portions are large and the noodle soups come to the table piping hot with bean sprouts, peppers and lime on the side. My constant complaint however is the service or rather the painful lack of service. It is friendly when you arrive but after you order and get your food there is no check-in to refill tea, ask about the food or anything else. The good food makes up for that somewhat. The menu is extensive so there's a lot to choose from and you won't be disappointed with the food. Just don't expect any attention. read more

This is my number one favourite restaurant in Langford, hands down. The only thing I haven't enjoyed from here was the wonton soup - and that was my own fault as I did not read what was inside. The pho is absolutely killer, along with their spring rolls and salad rolls. Me and my family eat here at least twice a month. The service is friendly and it has never taken more than 20 minutes to get our food even with big orders. If you're stopping by in the Victoria area, I highly recommend this place to everyone. It has vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options and it does definitely has some items even the pickiest eaters or your young ones would enjoy. Decent Vietnamese for Langford. Partner really enjoyed the pho. Satisfying on a chilly evening. There's a section of vegetarian options so ordered the vegetable vermicelli with spring rolls that were a rather mushy minced texture. Will try the salad rolls next time... friendly helpful service. Very busy especially with takeout. Update** visited again to try new dishes and the meal was good. Ordered the grilled pork vermicelli and meat was cooked perfectly with a nice smoky flamed flavour (they know how to cook meat), and the tofu and veggies with egg noodles is a vegetarian dish that I'd recommend (although second time I ordered, it was heavier on the soy sauce). Again, restaurant was bustling on a Sunday evening with people coming and going. Restaurant itself may not seem all that busy but lots of orders are pick-up so service is steady. Flag down a server if you need something. Keep in mind it's a family run business. Space is a little rough around the edges and could do with some tlc including fixing up the huge under-utilized deck out front that would be great for customers to enjoy. I've been here several times and although the food is great, the service lacks a bit. Slower service where you'll unfortunately end up having to track a wait staff down to make any requests, including putting in your order, paying the bill, etc. They've got their water and green tea on the side of their front desk, so I think the trend here definitely leans towards self-serve. In terms of environment, this is a great place to dine in. They've got tons of seating available with great bamboo decor. As for pricing, this has gone up to an average of $13 each for a large pho/vermicelli/rice plates. Not as affordable as before, and it's a shame they charge for extra fish sauce at these prices. In comparison to the downtown location, I definitely prefer it there to here! read more

Over the past first year that we've lived in Langford my girlfriend and I have sporadically dined or gotten take out here several times and have never been disappointed. It's been a no-brainer first choice for a cold winter day for a delightful bowl of yummy pho to warm us up, and also the remedy eat-at-home for when we've felt under the weather with a cold. The cultural heritage at the restaurant is definitely a cherished part of the experience, with attentive servers that are courteous to the extreme. We just love it there, and though we live close by we know people who travel across town for this preferred establishment. read more

The place has good Vietnamese food at a good price. Their spring rolls are a bit of a departure from what I am used to (coming from calgary). The setup and ambiance is typical of a dash in and out type of casual eatery. Service is genuine and warm. The only gripe I have is on the seating. On two occasions that I visited the establishment, I see what appears to have been preferential treatment given to different customers. This is a business, treating your customers differently in plain site will only push them away. If seats are reserved, place a sign on said seat indicating that it's reserved. Warning Vegetarians I hate to be another guy on the internet complaining, but I consider this to be a major issue. I've been to this place 4-5 times in the past. Every time I went, I confirmed with the server that the hot and sour soup I was ordering off the VEGETARIAN menu was made with a vegetable base. Each and every time the server was keen to convince me that the soup base was indeed vegetarian. This was witnessed by my vegetarian and non-vegetarian friends who were with me. Every time the server assured me it was vegetarian, something about the way she said it seemed a bit dodgy. The server seemed really nice. This fact was confirmed by how terrible she was at lying. The soup always tasted a bit funky. It was very good to be honest, but it didn't seem to be vegetarian. Today I pushed the issue a bit more and she finally admitted that it was made with either chicken or beef base depending on the day. I was furious and asked to speak to the manager. He was quite hesitant to deal with me until I continued to push. He said the menu explains everything, but there is no mention of beef/chicken broth in the soups. The undisclosed meat issue (especially fish sauce) is common with Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and other Eastern ethnic foods. I know to look out for it. The problem is that I clearly asked our server on several occasions and she chose to lie to my face on each and every occasion. I'm also certain that this was not a language issue. She knew exactly what I was asking. In short, I hope no one dies on their floor because they chose to lie about the ingredients of what they are serving. Shame on these people. We were craving some authentic pho after coming back from Vietnam. Unfortunately, this was not the place to go. The pho broth was very bland and only edible after mixing in a whole bunch of other sauces since the rest of the soup didn't add much flavour either. The spring rolls weren't very good either, over cooked. On top the service was lacking, the kids that served us didn't seem to care in the slightest and barely opened their mouths. After recently relocating to langford, and leaving our beloved "Huong Lan" behind (try it if you're ever in nanaimo, you won't be disappointed) we were in search of an inexpensive Vietnamese joint. This place is awesome! Even when it's busy, the food comes promptly. I wouldn't give the service 5 stars, but that's not to say it's bad.. I just worked in the business for years so I'm a little critical. Friendly staff, but sometimes it seems they could use an extra hand. The vegetarian section of the menu is slightly confusing. #72 reads as follows: noodle soup with chicken or beef broth. Made me chuckle. It is awful. We have three adult and one two year old. From the moment we come in, no one offers a seat for the little one. I have to find it myself. When I ask for a juice for my son, guess what, no juice, no suggestion, no explanation, just NO. Ok, I just let my baby drink tea. We ordered two appetizers and three main. When the appetizers served, only two sets of cutlery on the table. No plates for us even I told her we would share the food. When I asked for the plates, guess what, I got one. I have to ask again to get another three and they are dirty. They even had some green onion on it. They used huge plates for such small portion. When we were working on our appetizers, here came the main, and no one clean the empty plates from table, no one asked how the food is, no one offered anything. try to imagine how we fit 6 huge plate and four little plate in one small table. So the end of story is we will never go back, and We will tell everyone we know to not go there. read more

We have been here many times since we like to support local business in Langford; however, today is the last time. We were here about three months ago, the service was not great and the Ph was ok. Today, we thought we would give it one more try. Slow is not the adjective I would describe their service, it's more like poor. Two tables that came in after us got served before us and another wait staff decided to clean a table instead of taking our order. There was a total of 4 tables (including us) in the restaurant, so not super busy. Both my boyfriend and I are decent cooks; however, we love to dine out at least once a week to a restaurant because we are willing to pay for a good meal, our food served and not having to clean up. We just left because we couldn't get service and there are better Ph restaurant in downtown Victoria. If you are looking for a self-serve restaurant, meaning you have to track a wait staff to make an order then this is the place for you. The Green Leaf Bistro has gone downhill. read more
