I will break this down into the elements: Parking - extremely limited- about 6 spots in their parking lot, so street parking is almost a certainty. Ambiance - converted small firehouse, nicely decorated but it can be very noisy if all the tables are filled Service - not sure what the underlying issue was but after we were seated for 10 minutes the hostess came over and took our drink orders. (The drinks were fine, nothing special.). The server, when she did arrive apologized for her delay, but it kept occurring, taking the order, getting our meal, getting the check and then waiting for her to return with the card and receipt. Each time with an apology for being slow. The place was about 75% full the staffing looked like - 1 hostess ,1 food runner, and 2 servers. Food- really average. Nothing wrong with the preparation but given that they put themselves out as a dining experience, I expected more. What an amazing dining experience. Every once in a while you find a special place that you'll never forget, for me No.6 is one such place. Let's start with the ambiance, it's very tasteful, give the ferm that it's trendy without being pretentious. The staff are amazing; Jay was an amazing and knowledgeable server, guiding me through the menu and specials for the day. He teamed up well with Robin. Together they ensure patrons leave satiated and satisfied. I started with a pre-dinner cocktail trying the amazing Iberian Cascade (white port, soda water, orange bitters and grapefruit and orange zest). It was sweet but refreshing. I next moved on to their cucumber martini which was DELISH and hit the spot for me. For my dinner I ordered Elk Medallions, medium rare. Cooked perfectly to temperature, tender very flavorful with a pear, brutal and caramelized reduction. It was paired with roasted potatoes and asparagus. It was heaven on a platter. I absolutely love red blends and they had a French red blend L'Agnotique Rouge which the subtle sweetness brought out more flavor in the elk meat. A meal this good would not be complete without dessert and I chose to enjoy a triple chocolate macadamia brownie. OMG BLISS! After I was finished the amazing chef came out apologized for a slight faux pas on the menu and asked how I enjoyed the meal. I hope the smile on my face told have her the answer. I would drive at least 100 miles out of my way to dine here again. This restaurant is a can't miss with a stellar reputation. I do not do this often however this was one of the most disappointing meals, especially after reading all of the great reviews about this place. The only redeeming quality is it has a nice ambiance wine bar esc vibes. The food was cold, bland, the spicing was off , and it took forever. It just really wasn't that good. I'm so bummed about this experience! My partner and I really wanted to enjoy this meal because the concept of a daily changing menu is so neat, but we were extremely disappointed at every turn. We are long distance so we booked this place as a special occasion just being together and it was ultimately overpriced and underwhelming. The service was okay (that's why I'm giving 2* instead of 1), but the food was just awful. It was almost comically bad! We were in and out of the restaurant in 45" and we skipped dessert. My filet ($56) was horribly overcooked. I asked for medium well and it arrived well done. My boyfriend ordered the oxtail and his polenta was super chunky--not smooth at all. No6 was fine. It was pricy, like the way Corn dance is. The hubs said that he thinks the restaurant is really trying to use local ingredients (so maybe that's why some items we had were out of season so It made the dish kind of bland at the end, though it starts off flavorable at first). I thought it was decent, but it was super busy on this random Thursday night that we went. I didn't make a reservation because I didn't know what was on the menu ( they post on FB right before opening and I wasn't committed until I saw the menu which meant you don't get a soft comfy seat if you do a walk in since everyone has already been seated before you. They have a beer and wine license so all of their cocktails are made with pretty much Prosecco, but it was still very tasty, The one that I had with the basil lemongrass. We also opted to order a bottle of wine, and there was a large selection, the most of them I've never heard of. The server Robin was able to give us samples of a couple of different wines and I found one that I liked that the bartender recommended. We are hoping to come back in the summer when all of the veggies are in season so that we can really get a taste of what no6 has to offer. We ordered the brussels sprouts with bacon, which was a very tasty dish but we definitely want more bacon in there! We also got baked Brie with blueberries, which was very tasty. I ordered the duck which was good but I wish there was more duck since I wasn't able to eat the skin since it was very tough. The hubs got the ribeye, which was a good size and tasted flavorful, but then became kind of very salty towards the middle since it was sitting on top of the potatoes, which was probably very well seasoned. They didn't overcook the steak which was appreciated. We didn't get any desserts since the peanut butter cheesecake I was interested in was sold out and oh they actually sold out of the Brussels and bacon appetizer a little bit after we ordered and got our dish. The soup appetizer looked really good but didn't understand how it could be shared but It made sense when the table next to us got it. Have done a great job remodeling the interior. Our order consisted of one salad, 4 glasses of wine (not "top shelf"), a two boned pork job and chicken pieces with jasmine rice. Total $150.00. Returned both entrees to be heated up and weren't able to order bread with meal because, what they did have, was being reserved to include with other items on menu. We left this place feeling very underwhelmed and disappointed. We were excited to try a new place for a special date night. Giving them 2 stars because the server was smiley and (although, not good service) and the portion size of one entree was generous. We were hoping for the service and food to reflect the dining price tag, they did not. The ambiance on the outside is very magical at night with the pretty lights hanging over a beautiful old fire station. Inside there were wine bottles decorated on one wall and the other walls looked like incohesive leftover decor from someone's house. The dining area is very small, but it didn't feel intimate; the tables were so tight together and our chairs were touching back to back with strangers. It was also so loud, with being that close to other tables it was very hard to have a genuine intimate moment with the person you are there to dine with. The waitress seemed to have a couple regulars who were treated with care, while we felt very much like we were in the way. The appetizer was the best thing we ate. Both of our entrees were not good. One entree was flavorless and looked unappetizing. Our second entree was very undercooked and at least 3/4's of the meat was inedible fat--the steak knife they provided couldn't even cut through it. It was not worth sending back because the flavor combo wasn't good to begin with. $140 before tip and that's not including drinks. With those prices for 2 meals and 1 appetizer I would think we would have had more of an "experience" and felt taken care of, or at the very least had our meal executed correctly. read more

This is, beyond any reasonable doubt, the best meal I have had in this town. Ever. The dishes were heavenly and they took exceptional care of us. I let them know in advance that our reservation was for my wife's birthday and they truly went above and beyond with our dessert. Back in our salad days, the wife and I were heavily involved in the South Bend Civic Theatre, which at the time, called this Firehouse home. We happy few who were blessed enough to be involved back in the day put our hearts, sweat, and one occasion in a production of Streetcar- actual blood into creating art for the community. Many of the productions in the Firehouse transcended the limitations of the space and pulled the audience from their seats into Storytelling Glory in the presence of the Gods. This was a magical place to put on a show, and to make friends we will cherish for eternity. It brings us tremendous joy to report that the current occupants of these sacred grounds are continuing this tradition of blowing the public's minds by delivering what can only be described as Art, right to their tables. No. 6 is not to be missed if you are into food prepared with Passion. We'll be back, for pretty much any special occasion going forward. P.S. The Firehouse is haunted by at least: one little kid, and old dude in an old-timey puffy shirt, and some horrifying presence upstairs that will only pounce on you when you are the last one out of the building. read more

AMAZING! My wife says it's the best restaurant meal she's enjoyed (we're from Los Angeles and had just visited Chicago) and I have to agree. Creative, inventive scratch menu, open kitchen concept, no deep fryer, no microwaves, just great food! Warm, cozy environment, tastefully decorated in the former Historic South Bend Number 6 Firehouse. We visited in early August with our two adult sons, we came hungry and were not disappointed. We started with the garlic zucchini bites, roasted beets, and brisket biscuit. The menu is divided, sea, land, farm, and we all stuck to the farm. I had the rack of lamb which was prepared with a tasty rub and served over a smoked blueberry sauce, my wife had the filet and our sons had the veal tomahawk and New York strip. All of the meats were cooked to perfection, were super flavorful and were beautifully presented with awesome accompaniments. We shared a bottle of wine from their extensive, fairly priced collection and finished by sharing a serving of the house made pecan caramel cake which was served warm and topped with house made whipped cream. Our server was phenomenal and really made us feel at home. Our younger son is an aspiring chef and when we told the server this, she brought him to meet the chef, pretty cool! From start to finish, this was an amazing and unexpected experience! My husband and I enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, the pairings, and most of all the staff! One of the owners took the time to explain how they even make their own salts! We will be attempting to make our own at home which will be interesting. Wonderful service! They accommodated our group of 4 with no reservation and I am so glad they did!! Chef Vince is masterful. Everyone in my group ordered something different so we could share bites. The sea bass and ahi were done to perfection. The Kansas City steak was tender and flavorful. But the show stopper was the beef bourguignon-that was one of the best things I've ever tasted. Chef Vince came to our table and we showered him with well deserved praises for the meal. He was incredibly gracious and told us all about their process. Went with my wife & son to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant is very small. While the tables didn't feel cramped, it was very loud. Unfortunately there was a large table with some folks who were clearly over served and they were very distracting. Service was friendly and attentive once they remembered us, but we did sit for a while before anyone came to our table. Guests should be aware that the bar does not carry any hard alcohol, only wine and beer. Not an issue for me personally but some people who prefer a cocktail may be disappointed. We shared rabbit bruschetta as a starter. It was tasty but the portion was pretty small. My wife and son enjoyed the duck. I didn't taste it but it looked overcooked. I ordered ahi tuna rare. Mine was definitely overcooked. Moreover there was a pile of spicy pickles on top of the tuna. While tasty at first, the spice overwhelmed the taste of the fish. I would give the service a 4, the food a 3.5,maybe a 4, but what drives the overall rating down is the price. Very expensive. Now this is a scratch kitchen, where the menu changes daily, and is good everyday. Every visit that I've had has yet to disappoint, since each item I ordered has stayed consistently delicious. Now, it may sound like I go there everyday, which I wish I did, but it is pretty pricey (and so worth it). I ordered a cocktail and a texas chili that they had, all totaling up to about $30. It would've been half-priced anywhere else, but this is as fresh and professional cooked as it can get. The taste was amazing and I couldn't stop eating. I was even tempted to try another one of their entrees since there were several items I was wanting to try. What really makes me happy about the owner who took over this place, is that they respect the history of the building. Literally, minor changes here and there, but 90% of it is all original. I love the "from scratch" concept and the adventure a new menu every day presents. Tonight was taco Tuesday and they were great. I had elk and my dinner partner had brisket. TL;DR Version - we arrived at 7. Did not get food until almost 9. Several dishes were improperly cooked. Several were just bad. I really wanted to like this place. I really did. This was our first visit and will likely be the last. We had reservations for 6 people at 7:00 on a Saturday night. We arrived and they were busy. Our table was ready and we were sat. It took a while for the waitress to come get our drink order. It then took a while for the drinks to arrive.... they were beer, wine and cider. We then ordered shareables. My wife and I got the pulled pork doughnut. It was fantastic. Dinner was ordered around 7:30 p.m. We wait and we wait and we wait. Had it just been my wife and me we would have walked out long before our food got there. We were with friends we had not seen in a long time so we were enjoying the fellowship. Finally the manager came over to apologize. This was about 8:45 or so. I pointed out to her that two tables were seated after us and those patrons were done with their food. I ordered the quail. It came with mashed potatoes and collard greens. The quail was good, but the serving size was TINY. It was one quail. Standard is to serve 2-3 per person. The potatoes tasted like they were just a bowl of salt. I have never had collard greens before but did not like these. Of course it may be they were well cooked and I just don't like collard greens. My wife ordered a steak medium. She got a steak well done. She said it was tough and she would have gotten a better one at Texas Roadhouse. Others at our table got food over cooked or under cooked. They removed from the bill dishes that were improperly cooked and gave us half off the rest of the bill. With their touting how fresh and good their food is, and the menu prices, we expected MUCH MUCH more from this place. The manager did give us a coupon for 10% off our next visit. I do not think that is enough to entice me to come back and try it again. I would not recommend this place. Very stylish ambiance in an old fire station. Friendly service although a bit slow-looked like only two servers for the whole restaurant, but they were working hard. Starters were a little limited but a nice selection of entrees. Squash spread appetizer was okay but small and pricey; entrees are more generous and reasonable by current standards. The Veal Bourguignon was delicious as was the mahi mahi and a well cooked filet. Desserts, crème brûlée and carrot cake, were also very good. Varied, well priced wine list. Note that they don't have a full liquor license so the "cocktails" are all made with vermouth, wine, Prosecco etc. Not bad, but next time I would just stick with wine. read more

Came here for the first time in February 2022 with a large group - definitely recommend making reservations because it's a smaller building. Similarly be prepared for food to take a bit if you're with a larger party because it's a small kitchen, but well worth it! A friend and I dined at No6 on a Saturday evening. The place is adorable and our server Jay was friendly and pleasant. There were many menu items that intrigued us, but ultimately we decided on the baked brie appetizer, pork loin and KC strip. The appetizer was well done, with a honey drizzle and seasonal berries. A little more bread would have insured we could enjoy all of the cheese. My pork loin was well-seasoned and perfectly cooked. My friend's steak also looked to be well cooked. Both portions were generous, and came with sides of golden mashed potatoes and sautéed broccolini, which were also yummy. My only complaint came at the end of the meal... our crime brûlée was a disappointment. To my liking, a perfect crime brûlée is deep enough so the custard is still cool to cold in the middle... and not to firm, not too soft. Ours was prepared in a ramekin that was way too shallow. The custard was melted and grainy, having been warmed through by the torching. A sorry end to an otherwise wonderful meal. On a final positive note, we felt the pricing was a great value for all of sizes of the portions served. If we find ourselves in town in the future, we would definitely give No6 another try. read more

An incredible culinary enclave in a desolate land of appetizing options. Me and my coworkers come to South Bend on a regular basis for work. During our frequent trips we've found a few restaurants that we enjoy that we often return to since we've had bad experiences when we've attempted to change the routine. Unfortunately many of the places we enjoy have become stale as we run our way through the concise menus. However, on route to one of our regular spots we couldn't help but notice how quant this lit up retired fire station grabbed our eye. Only to learn the scratch kitchen style within No6 would solve the challenge we were facing with the full of ordering the same dishes that became our routine. With a menu that changes daily we all are excited and intrigued to comeback and look through a completely different menu built off of that mornings delivery. This ensures however many times we return it will be like trying a new restaurant with the comfort of knowing a chef we can trust is making a delicious meal out of what was foraged that day. On the day we arrived my party enjoyed the ox tail, vegetable risotto and grouper. All of which was beautifully plated as we devoured each meal leaving few crumbs behind to as we couldn't help but consume everything in site. After one night dining in No6 the entire group agreed we will return and are excited to make the difficult decision of determining what of the numerous options we will select knowing it will be replaced tomorrow. However, we are confident anything created in No6 will be incredible and there will never be any concern of running out of options that are delicious while also changing up from the status quo of food we order at other restaurants. read more
