We had the cauliflower veloute, miso black cod, pork ribeye, smoked carrots, and olive oil cake. All dishes were great, but the vegetable dishes were standouts with their flavor. Amuse bouchée- melon and goat cheese, were we in for a treat???!!! As reviews mentions the service is great, Isabella took great care of us, we were worried when she disappeared in the back with the "manager" never to be seen again, not there to close up our table, not there to offer us birthday wishes not there to finish dinner very odd. She asked how the food was, we told her is was overcooked. The manager was listening in - then she disappeared. The recommendation for wine was perfect and that's where the good ends. We ordered tuna on a wonton, which was tasteless lacking flavor, salt, zero umami! The oysters, East Coast were raw, so not hard to screw that one up. We doubled this order for 3 people. We ordered the duck breast - we were told that we could not have the skin crispy, and the duck medium rare as a chef would be unable to do that. So we decided crispy skin and medium cooked duck would be OK. What was served was two slices of duck-contributor yes, two slices. Did we pay for 1/3 of the duck breast? No, we were charged for the full duck breast - Shrink-a-nomics. We also ordered the 'pork ribeye', to temperature, or MR. What we were brought was a grilled-grey-pork loin no ribeye, no fat, no bone. This was served over what was supposed to be polenta. But it was lumpy and flavorless. The flavor profiles of both the duck and the pork were missing, the sauce the jois, everything was off. Being from out of town and here for a work event (and having to move my hotel room three different times due to various gross issues I won't get into), I needed a good place to eat! The reviews and menu drew me in, although I hesitated when reading one of the bad reviews. I am so glad I came here! The manager was very accommodating since I didn't have a reservation, and Marianna provided exceptional service (and hand crafted and incredible Mezcal Negroni for me). But the best part was the food! I had the duck and it was outstanding. It was the perfect size, perfectly done, and delightfully presented. The staff was polite as always but our experience with the kitchen will cause us to choose other options in the area. My wife requested the duck have crispy skin, a common preparation for the thick, fatty skin. The server assured it would be accommodated. The duck arrived without the request and without setting the plate down, we requested the crisping. The server then returned saying the chef could not honor the request and suggested we order something else. i.e. the chef would not prepare a dish to meet a request, only his/her personal tastes. The only word to describe this experience is arrogant. The server did not apologize, apparently trained to just repeat the chef's message without remorse. The lobster bisque was very over salted (had to toss it). Not sure how anyone didn't notice that before serving it to patrons.... The steak I got was good and well cooked, but the Brussel sprouts were burned in parts that I had to avoid. Worst of all I got scallops on the side of my steak and one had a strong taste of ammonia which I spit out and threw the rest away. Last night we had an exquisite dinner at the Artisan! Their choices of wine by the glass or bottle was impressive. I had steak tartare for starters. Well prepared and nicely done. My main course was Shrimp Risotto. It was with a number of large shrimp and a tasty risotto. I finished with a strawberry shortcake. They food ordered by wife and my friends was equally delicious. While visiting South Bend, we wanted to try out the local restaurants providing a tasting menu. We found this gem in Elkhart. Upon arrival, we were greeted and sat at our table. The waiter was friendly and explained every course to us. The chef not only fed our stomachs but our minds with his creative masterpiece, which told a story of a butterfly transformation. My husband and I went to the Artisan on Oct 28th to celebrate the upcoming birth of our son. It was our first "fancy" dinner. The atmosphere was romantic and warm. The staff made us feel like the most special guests in the restaurant. They were welcoming, attentive, and kind. They recommended my husband a beer to pair with his meal since he is not a big on wine, and it was a great fit. They also made me a delightful mocktail.
