Wow I can't say enough good things! I feel it's hard to come across such a great and unique restaurant in Miami that feels truly intimate and has incredible food and atmosphere. We had the charbroiled oysters, regular oysters, manchego, jamón ibérico, ous, octopus, charbroiled calamar and a special of the (week? day?) paella but I can't remember the name now. Everything was phenomenal and so different tasting in the best way possible. ONLY thing I'd change is the paella was a little too salty. All the food was excellent but there were some issues. The main issue was the size of the portions. Everything was rather tiny even for 2 to share. The first course of Pork Loin was done well but like the rest of the meal I wanted more. Also a first "appetizer" dish it would have been nice to also have a little bread which they did bring but at an extra charge. The calamari (with tails) was also good but small. This definitely was the theme with the meal. Great cooking, tiny sizes....by far the best was the chateaux briand. The meat was cooked perfectly and the dessert (which seemed to be the largest plate) was also good and made for a nice finish. ...but afterword we were still hungry!!! For $78 PER PERSON you would think you would get more food, frankly every plate should have been double and that didn't even include any drinks or even coffee. While it's hard to judge a place based on a holiday meal for the size and selection on that night you can find much better value (and more food) for your $178. read more

My partner and I came to NIU kitchen for our anniversary after a friend recommended we try it. Definitely a nice intimate place for a date night. They serve Catalan style tapas dishes and we did as the server recommended and blindly chose a few random dishes to share. Thankfully, nothing disappointed. We had the branzino crudo, a salad, the prawns in a chocolate sauce (sounds weird but it was delicious) and the octopus carpaccio. For dessert we had the ganaxe xocolata which was good but too rich for my taste. We were recommended an orange wine which was refreshing but could stand up to the bold flavors of our meal. This place was really unique in an indescribable way that I've never experienced in Miami. The dishes were playful and intriguing. The service was great. The kitchen staff is super amazing as usual but the waiters were inattentive, completely forgot about our table, I think we got served by at least 4 different people the whole time we were there. The sad part is as a customer you expect to give a tip to show appreciation for the staff, but in this case this was taken away by an automated 20% charge for literally the worst service we experienced in Miami so far. As a former server myself, I think this is truly unfair and ridiculous. Very unfortunate.... We went in without a resv and immediately got seated- which was super nice considering it was weekend and the place is tiny and gets full within half an hour. NIU Kitchen, why do you make delicious, saucy foods but then give your diners such a little amount bread? This was so infuriating. Is it a Catalan thing? Ous $14 is a rich and creamy bowl of poached eggs, truffle potato foam, Jamón ibérico, and black truffle. An elevated dip. The few bread pieces we received were not enough to soak up the eggs. We were eventually offered more bread by our server when we kept refusing to let him take away the bowl. Extra bread $1.50 - Enough bread should be provided for the Ous dish. The server asked if we would like more bread. It was pretty funny to find out that they charged us $1.50 for the equivalent of a slice of toast. Steak Tartare $13 with the fried egg on top was probably the second favorite dish of the night. We don't order this dish often so it was a special treat. Well seasoned. Wahoo Tartare $13 was also tasty. A little bit of the tang from the lime zest was interesting. Calamar $16 was the most beautiful dish of the night. The presentation of the whole, smokey flavored squid was impressive and the accompanying sauces were perfect. I prefer squid to be a bit more tender, but my fellow diners had no problem eating the rest. Costelles $16 baby back ribs with romesco sauce were savory although they weren't served hot enough temperature wise. The toddler of the group enjoyed it greatly. Rotllet de Pasta $16 was a bit underwhelming compared to the other fantastic dishes. Rolled pasta. Think manacotti, but a bit fancier with scallops on top. Pa Amb Llet $8. While the server's heavy accent was pleasant, we barely undersood him. We made the server repeat his descriptions of the desserts twice. We ordered the bread soaked in milk and spices on whim since he mentioned there would be a brûlée. The bottom rich custard base was served chilled, which was refreshing. Don't think bread pudding. It was more like pudding - pudding. As advertised there was a crunchy layer of burnt sugar in the middle. It was topped with some ice cream. Perfect ending to a fun experience. 4 stars since there is room for improvement. Proportional bread to food ratio and a tiny bit friendlier service would do wonders. PS - The bathroom is hilariously tiny, but at least they have one. Also, since that area of downtown Miami is very quiet and kind of sketchy after business hours we didn't have a problem finding a metered parking space nearby. It's a small restaurant that transports you out of Miami... Brunch. Here's what we had: Watermelon gazpacho Pa amb tomaquet - basically toast with tomato on top. So fresh! It's good - clean, "pure" so that natural flavors come through. The presentation is elegant without being ostentatious. But, if you don't have a discriminating palate, the food might seem a little plain. It's not them - they are doing everything right. But, in a world where flavor is oversaturated in everything (especially cheap food), simple, clean cuisine can be a little underwhelming. And, I'm afraid when compared to the price, I felt underwhelmed. For appetizers, we had an octopus starter & an anchovies starter. For entrees, we had baby back ribs & the whole fish. Every thing was cooked perfectly. Portions were enough for at least 2 not-hungry, sophisticated diners. I'd recommend NIU for anyone w evening plans in the area. In the game of expectations this is a big loss. It's been a while since I've been to Niu. Their new location where it's now shuttered sister restaurant (Arson) was located is a major improvement. The rest however was not. The music and the din of all the conversations was extremely loud, at time requiring us to shout. The service was frenzied with three servers struggling to keep up including one lady who couldn't be anymore indifferent if she tried. The food was hit or miss. Several dishes were bland including the baby squid, grilled artichokes and the branzino tartare. The foie gras was the highlight with the arroz sec not far behind. Their classic Ous was tasty but when we found a piece of metal in one of the two we had ordered that was just unacceptable and could have caused an injury. The first four wines we ordered were also unavailable. All in all it was a major step down for a restaurant that I've always recommended and often visited. I hope it was just an extremely off night because otherwise it would be sad to see this one time gem completely lose its shine. First, we order 2 octopus dishes, the carpaccio (cold) and the grilled octopus leg (hot). Rust me, even both are octopus, they are so different and perfectly seasoned/cooked. They do accommodate them according to the parties that walk-in; better said: the parties that reserve. If it's at night you are gonna have to make a reservation. What we ordered; Llamanto: it has lobster pieces(tiny), avocado,egg. It was different and I liked it but the flavor of the boiled egg was the main note for me. 4* Ous: poached eggs, truffled potato foam,and some ham pieces, as in crunchy crumbles. Out of the appetizers this was my favorite. The truffle flavor is very very subtle,I'd prefer it a tad more pronounced, but you can still tell it's in there. It's served with 3-4 pieces of bread but you need to finish eating it with a spoon or you'll leave half of it there. 4.5* 2 orders of Costelles: ribs, that's what they are. Served with sautéed spinach. And although it had golden raisings the spinach was still salty. Once the ribs arrived I joked about how they looked like they were the leftover bone. Hence yes, skinnyyyyy. They had gone through that 90's diet of no carbs no fat only cardio type of lifestyle. 3* Jamon iberico: thinly sliced with a drizzle of oil. 5* Pa amb tomaquet: Bread with fresh tomato. This was good. Simple but delicious. 4* Dessert: i dont remember the name but it was heavenly. Those four small tapas, 2 orders of ribs, a dessert and a bottle of wine added to a total of $168. Thank goodness We weren't hungry that day. Yes, the place is welcoming and the service is great but after all the hoopla I expected more. I can understand how Chef Lomas was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2017. Llamántol was a lovely plate of Maine lobster wrapped in a veil of vegetables in a pool of cherry tomato soup speckled with trout roe. The octopus carpaccio rested on a bed of garbanzo spread, with apple aioli and lemon zest. Ous was one of the best dishes I've ever eaten: crispy jamón ibérico and fragments of black truffle dot a truffled potato foam which hides poached eggs. The chocolate ganache dessert is not to be missed: a dense mound of hazelnut chocolate complemented by crunchy toast fragments, olive oil, and sea salt. The only slight weakness is the wine list, which could feature a few more high-quality wines (especially from Priorat). But this is a foodie heaven marked by flavorful innovation. read more

Second time here, we came for Valentine's Day and had their menu. First dish, the white asparagus cream was beautiful, creamy, fresh and a great way to start a dinner. Next up was the prawn carpaccio with soft potato, fresh truffle and a nice pear puree. The pear puree and truffle complimented the sweetness and saltiness of the prawns. The Branzino (bass) was delightful. Filled with tomato and garlic oil. Cooked beautifully and the mayo that came complimented the entire dish. The second main, the Fillet Mignon was cooked beautifully medium rare, sauce was nice and rich and complimented the cut. The best dish was last, this concoction of vermouth cake, nuts, rich chocolate and raisons and fresh strawberries was stunning and MUST BE PUT ON THE DINNER MENU. If you know you Catalan food you will agree this will compliment the menu. A lot of desserts they have are creamy but this is next level. Unfortunately we had one table of loud obnoxious folks in the restaurant and the sound and echo was so loud that it disturbed all the other guests. The food was good but definitely overpriced. Yay! So happy to finally try this place out. It's right down the street from where I live so the location is very convenient. This is a little hidden gem in the madness of downtown. Very nicely kept and the menu was very well thought out. I came here for lunch with my friend Jenny and we both shared the Costelles (baby back ribs confit) and whole fish (dorado). The ribs confit was to die for. So tasty and fatty, yet crispy. The meat was falling off the bones. I highly recommend trying this dish. The other dish we had was the dorado. They offer to fillet it for you, but we opted to eat it with the bones. If you like to eat with chopsticks, bring your own because they didn't have any when we asked. It was worth a shot! I was definitely blown away by the confit. The service was efficient and quick, and the place is comfortable. Niu kitchen is a little hole in the wall in downtown Miami. It is probably my new favorite restaurant in Miami. NIU is small, cozy and full of flavor. The service is good, which is one of the reason I like small restaurants with only a few tables. Gets packed for Lunch and Dinner, and rightly so. Every single dish I have tried is amazing.. their Duck (Anec?) is excellent, the ribs are to die for... the tartare. Even the coffee is good!! This is better Catalan food than I have had in many places in Barcelona. I think that says A LOT. read more
