Upon sitting down, our server immediately told our party we had only 90 minutes and that a reservation was scheduled directly after our reservation so we would need to leave at that time. While most restaurants likely have back-to-back reservations on weekends, it was very rude to tell our table this, particularly considering the tone, and made our party feel rushed and created a hostile atmosphere. It's also shared with the Arson wine bar which gives you an amazing opportunity to choose the best of wines. I had a reservation, but when I visited on a Sunday evening, it wasn't too busy. I was seated in the back corner, so I could people watch while enjoying my food. What I got: - glass of red - I unfortunately forgot which wine I got, but the waitress let me taste 2 different reds, and I went with the latter because it had an interesting spicy note at the end of the sip. - 1 daily oyster (mignonette, lemon): lovely fresh oyster - can't go wrong! - 1 charbroiled oyster (ponzu, rice vinegar mayo): As I'd read in other reviews, my waitress brought out the oyster tableside to charbroil it with a torch - Loved watching the mayo sizzle, and it adds an indescribably delicious smoky flavor! Definitely recommend for the show1 - branzino tartare (White garlic cold soup, cucumber, quince): I had read other reviews about this one, so I had to go for it! Suuuper delicious, with the cold white garlic soup poured atop the branzino tartare. There's little spots of jam/jelly scattered around the dish too, so as you scoop up the soup and tartare, you get a hint of sweetness - it's so good! In case you're worried, the garlic soup doesn't have a super strong garlicky smell! - charbroiled octopus leg (Romesco and green salad): A little strong on the salting, but I love octopus, so had to try it. Great texture, soft and juicy. - artichoke (Grilled artichoke confit, jamon ibérico, almond/ balsamic vinaigrette): My waitress highly recommended this dish, and it certainly delivered! Artichoke and thin iberico pork, as it turns out, forms a lovely combination of texture and flavor! - pan-seared foie (Honey bread, apple textures, raspberries, almond powder): I had this as dessert and it's just perfect. We celebrated a friend's birthday dinner here last night & it was such fun! We were a large-ish, extremely boisterous & rather demanding (sowee) group of 8 but our phenomenal waiter, Chris, took excellent care of us, all while remaining cool & collected & looking extremely handsome! We ordered some of everything it felt like. Because I don't eat meat or pork or cephalopods or foie gras, there was quite a bit I didn't try but highlights were the Pa Amb Tomàquet (pan con tomate was outstanding!), oysters (both raw and charbroiled at the table with a glowing ember), were some of the best oysters i've EVER had, & i've had A LOT of oysters in my day! The other standout was the Branzino Tartare (White garlic cold soup, cucumber, quince) an absolute STAR! The flavours were soooo beautiful. The Canelons (Roasted chicken cannelloni, wonton, bechamel, grated Manchego) were yummy and definitely satisfying. The Glóries Salad (Greens, tomato, apple, onion, mozzarella, black olives, pesto) was good but nothing spectacular. All innall it was a fantastic time & I can't wait to return. Had this place on my list since it's across the street from me and the atmosphere always looked cozy. Eventually came here with my partner and his parents for dinner on a whim. Indoors was buzzing with lively chatter so we opted to sit outside even though rain was soon to arrive (we were also early for our reservation but we were seated pretty quickly) our server explained the menu to us so we were excited to pick out a few things to try. Honestly I wasn't really blown away by anything we tried.....the paella style seafood rice had some pretty chewy octopus and undercooked over seasoned rice...the shrimp was fine.. and I also tried the Canelons (a bit too cheesy for me and the chicken was dry) I really wanted to like this place because of the high reviews, but maybe I just selected the wrong things... read more

NIU Kitchen is currently operating out of their sister restaurant, Arson. The restaurant is on the smaller side with about 10 tables, but they do have outdoor seating. The menu seems to have a large # of options, but when you drill into the plates, they do not have too much variety. We tried asking for recommendations for food, so the server spit out like 10 different dishes he recommended in rapid fire order so we only caught like 3 of them. When we asked about the wine options, they had run out of almost all the red wines by the glass and he couldnt recommend one that they did have available- it just wasnt very helpful and made our ordering experience less pleasant than it could have been. The highlight of our meal was a delicious octopus carpaccio, which came atop what tasted like hummus with some lemon flavoring. The chicken canelloni-type dish (forgot the name) was a cheesy, creamy, shredded chicken served in a skillet. It was a hearty dish with some nice flavors, although I got a few chunks of chicken that took away from the dish a little. Next was the artichoke side, which felt like eating a dip with a spoon (creamy artichoke + pieces of artichoke were in each spoonful)- it sounds nice, but it was anticlimactic. To close out, I ordered the sponge cake upon receiving our last dish, and it still took 20 minutes to come to our table. Once we got to try it, I learned it was not at all like the olive oil cakes i've tried elsewhere- this one was a bit on the drier side, which they seemed to try to mask by drenching it with chocolate sauce. NIU Kitchen is a small and intimate restaurant in Downtown Miami serving Catalan-style foods. We came here with a group of friends after a concert, which I don't recommend coming in large groups due to the size of this restaurant. With that said, we benefited from trying many dishes here as we shared everything despite the fairly small tapas-sized orders. Seating might be limited at NIU Kitchen, but not the flavors. We tried so many unique dishes. Ous was awesome, which was a poached egg in truffled potato foam. One of my favorites was the Galtes de Porc or Pork Cheek. It was tasty, yet delicious and loved the texture. The Pa amb Tomaquet, or tomato bread was very good and a perfect side dish. I also loved the Arroz Rabbit Escargot. I can't really explain this dish but I liked it and that's all that matters. Other dishes worth mentioning which were good but not great were the Pulpo (Octopus) and the Calamar (Squid). The Calamar, in particular, was pretty standard in my opinion. I've had plenty of these before which was usually in a Japanese restaurant. Dessert was a very pleasant surprise. We tried the Ganaxe de Xocolata, or Chocolate Ganache. This was very small for our group but so very flavorful and reminded me most closely of some type of Ferrer Rocher chocolate.. but a little better. Very good. We also tried the Pe Amb Llet and this thing was to die for. So flavorful, so good. Don't know how to describe it. Just get it. Overall, I would highly recommend NIU Kitchen for a date since this place is very small, yet cozy. You'll definitely have some interesting choices of Catalan-style foods to try together. This is my second time here, right now NIU Kitchen has combined with Arson's, you will be dining at Arson's but the menu is mixed between the two restaurants. The food is SUPERB, I loved it the first time and this time too, really really good and different from the usual, we had PA AMB TOMÀQUET (Toasted bread, grated tomato, garlic oil), COCA (Flat bread, escalivada, anchovies, female tuna belly, romesco), CHARBROILED MUSHROOM CONFIT (Asparagus, poached egg, parsley, garlic, thyme), PAN-SEARED FOIE (Honey bread, apple textures, raspberries, almond powder) ALL SUPER DELICIOUS My disappointment are the wines, they only serve natural wines, I don't love natural wines in general, we tried 4 different ones before finding one that we could drink and, we only ordered by the glass, not a bottle like we would normally do because we just don't like natural wines. I understand that you guys want to specialize in natural wines and that is great but, why don't you also have some options of regular wines ? Given that we asked the waiter if we could bring our own bottle and pay corkage fee which would be great, he said we could but the corkage fee is $ 32, very expensive, given the location and place I would happily pay $ 20 but not $ 32 ! An underrated hidden gem in the heart of downtown! My friend brought me here after raving about it. The interior was small and simple, almost reminding me of a New York restaurant. I ordered the Branzino tartare and the pa amb tomaquet (essentially bruschetta with no cheese). The Branzino was delicious! The sauce it came with was to die for and I've honestly never had such a creative dish or meal in Miami. The tomato bread dish was really good as well, with crispy bread and a portion that gets your moneys worth. Truly a great place to bring a date or friend! Truly one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. The whole theory at NIU Kitchen is to 'close your eyes and point to a few random things on the menu and that's what you should get'--and we did just that. The photos I uploaded weren't even a quarter of what we ordered, but I felt so in the moment, that I didn't even snap anymore. The Arros de Cargols (rabbit confit & escargot rice with aioli) was absolutely insane and unique and I loved every bite of it. In addition, the meatballs were to die for and the cold tomato soup blew me away (coming from someone who isn't a fan of cold soups). The waitress was very helpful when it came to the food, but she was even more amazing when it came to the wine selection. Their wine list was huge and she helped us narrow it down based off what we chose to eat, and where our night was going afterwards. We landed on the Prana red (pictured), which was amazing. I went to NIU Kitchen for a large group dinner hosted by my publisher the weekend of Miami Book Fair. I think there were ten of us there at this tiny Catalan restaurant, and it was actually kind of perfect--a dim, intimate environment with a warm ambiance and great service. I was too ashamed to take pictures of all the food in front of my publisher and authors much more famous than Steph C. on Yelp, so I'm relying on my memory to reconstruct this meal. I do know that everything was shareable, and there wasn't a bad bite on the table. We started with the pa amb tomàquet and the octopus, both excellent. The pa amb tomàquet was simple and satisfyingly savory, toasted bread with grated tomato and garlic oil. The octopus was fantastic, a thin, supple carpaccio with garbanzo bean spread, apple aioli, and lemon zest. Of the larger offerings, I loved the arròs de cargols, an aromatic rice dish with rabbit confit, escargot, and aioli. Tons of good flavors and textures and very easy to share. The fish of the day was great, too. I think it was halibut, cooked just right. We may have also had the clams, and I'm probably forgetting another dish or two, so I guess these were the standouts, though I enjoyed everything. I do remember both desserts--the pa amb llet and the ganaxe de xocolata. The pa amb llet was somewhere between a bread pudding and a tres leches: bread soaked in milk infused with lemon and cinnamon, served with crema Catalana and lemon sorbet. Sweet, fragrant, and surprisingly light. The ganaxe de xocolata was dense and decadent, a hazelnut chocolate ganache with toasted bread, Arbequina virgin oil, and Maldon salt. I had a lovely time at NIU Kitchen. The food was delicious and the atmosphere ideal. I'd recommend this restaurant for your next nice dinner out. read more

Really enjoyed the meal at Niu Kitchen. If a Brooklyn hipster opened a Spanish restaurant, this is what it would look like. I think they offer a very solid menu of Spanish classics. I'm going to butcher these names but we had the pan con tomate, the nous, the gambas, the sausage paella, and the grilled oysters. Everything was delicious with good flavor. The only critique I have is that the service was very slow. We had to ask a few times for more wine, three times for the check, etc. I don't know if they are understaffed or if it's just the way it is. We'd probably increase our alcohol consumption (so more $$ for them) if the servers came by more often when they noticed an empty glass. Overall - a great restaurant and dining experience. If you close your eyes for a few seconds and re-open them while inside NIU Kitchen, a dark and narrow den-like space with a handful of tables and bare wood-paneled walls, you would be forgiven for forgetting that you were, in fact, in downtown Miami and not in some enchanting neighborhood watering hole in Barcelona. The restaurant has a zany, bohemian atmosphere to it and describes itself as "somewhere between Dali's moustache and Gaudi's Sagrada Familia." It's exceedingly popular and, due to limited seating, we ended up waiting for 30 minutes outside despite having a reservation. Thankfully, wine helped us pass the time. The Catalan-style tapas are refined but unpretentious, abundantly flavorful, and beautiful showcases of high-quality seafood and meat. There's a lot of raw and cured options and, in keeping with Spanish cuisine in general, generous utilization of salty and sour flavor profiles with often sharply contrasting ingredients within the same dish. Octopus - beautifully presented carpaccio-style meat with chickpea puree and lemon zest. Salty, creamy, and sharp. Very shareable as well. Pa amb Tomàquet (bread and tomato) - how can something so simple taste so complex? The grated tomato is rich and tangy, and the silky olive oil adds a fruity smokiness. Steak Tartare - an excellent dish. The pungent olive and mustard plus the lime juice cuts through the oiliness of the raw meat, and the texture is enhanced through its contrast with the crusty toast. Esqueixada - a traditional Catalan dish of shredded cured cod, diced tomatoes, olive oil and salt. I wasn't a huge fan of this one personally, since I found it overly salty and tart. Ous - a Catalan egg and potato dish that is off-menu currently, but truly a must. It comes in the form of a custard-y, decadent poached egg and truffled potato foam, topped with sliced jamon iberico and black truffle. It is exactly as delicious as it sounds. Pan-seared Fois - the presentation was gorgeous, and the interplay between the luscious liver, sweet-and-tart raspberry and apple, and the crunchy almond powder was masterful. One of the better bites of the night, but pricey for the portion. Calamar - grilled whole squid nestled atop potato cream and brushed with a tangy, aromatic green picada (think Catalan-style pesto paste). One of my favorites. Each chewy bite was an explosion of sweet and nutty flavors. Gambes - head-on prawns swimming in a thick brandy-chocolate broth. The shrimp was the slightest bit overcooked, but the sauce was exceptional, kind of like a syrupy mole sauce. Arròs de Cargols - contender for best dish of the evening. This was a savory-beyond-belief concoction of rich, oily rice, succulent pieces of rabbit confit and escargot, and healthy dollops of tangy aioli. Galtes - sticky glazed pork cheeks with mashed potato and a shallot salad. The sharpness and acidity of the shallots were well-contrasted against the earthy meat, but this dish was less of a world-beater than the others. Clams - a recipe from the executive chef's mom and an absolute knock-out. The buttery, herbaceous, and zesty sauce added an exclamation mark to the briny sweetness of the clams. Ask for bread. One dish after another blew our collective minds, and I can honestly say my experience at NIU Kitchen with four of my best friends ranks up there with my finest meals ever. read more

When I told the waiter was extremely rude telling me that's just how it is and I didn't understand Catalan culture.... Ummmm no! The Catalans would never serve me such trash. The waiter was not familiar with the menu and had an attitude the whole time. We were the only people in the restaurant and it seemed he was upset to be working. Food was definitely good, however the overall service execution left more to be desired. First, when we were sat, we waited ten minutes for any waiter to pay us any attention. Music was so loud too at the beginning, no one at the table could hear our waiter. Now onto food: - We started off with the tomato bread and iberico ham (not pictured). Very good. - We then had the anchovies, good but 17 dollars for 4 anchovies that comes with no bread feels like a crime. Add an extra 2 bucks to the dish and give me some bread if you have to. - The steak tartare was good, nothing amazing, but the crackers it came with instantly break when you put the tartare on top. - Octopus was delicious, no complaints. - Clams (not pictured) were great and different than other clams I've had, love the slight vinegar kick in the sauce. Ordered bread to come to clean up all the sauce. But had to ask twice if the bread was coming. - Ous was delicious, can really taste the truffle, but they give you so little bread, we had to order more. - Bavette steak (not pictured) was delicious as well. Perfectly cooked and really tender, would definitely recommend. - Seafood Paella (not pictured) was way too salty. Seafood was perfectly cooked though and rice texture was decent, wish there was some socarrat at the bottom though. - Cuttlefish, they forgot about this dish and when I asked if it was coming, they said they'd go check, and never got back to us. All in all, food was good, but portions were small, which would've been fine, if the service was attentive and it felt like we were being taken care of. We had to wait a little bit for a table, but after we got seated, we ordered the Cold Tomato Soup, Ous (poached eggs), Costelles (ribs), and Calamar (whole squid). We ordered the Cold Tomato Soup because it seemed popular among fellow yelpers, but neither of us liked it. It was very trendy as they poured the tomato soup on the mustard ice cream in front of you at the table, but we thought the soup was sour. The mustard ice cream was good though. The Ous was amazing and came with 4 slices of bread to spread over. We should've asked for more bread but the Ous was good by itself as well. The Costelles ribs were fall-off-the-bone and tasty. The Calamar came in a whole squid form and was very insta-worthy but could have held a bit more flavor. Overall, we enjoyed our meal here and it is a great place for a date. Awesome tapas style fine dining restaurant. This spot is in an unlikely location with a small dining room. They have a awesome extensive wine selection and very cozy vibe. The cheese plate was great (manchego and various jams and grapes) along with the chicken dish and duck. Will definitely be coming back as the menu changes and I'd love to try new things! read more
