Yay! So happy to finally try this place out. It's right down the street from where I live so the location is very convenient. This is a little hidden gem in the madness of downtown. Very nicely kept and the menu was very well thought out. I came here for lunch with my friend Jenny and we both shared the Costelles (baby back ribs confit) and whole fish (dorado). The ribs confit was to die for. So tasty and fatty, yet crispy. The meat was falling off the bones. I highly recommend trying this dish. The other dish we had was the dorado. They offer to fillet it for you, but we opted to eat it with the bones. If you like to eat with chopsticks, bring your own because they didn't have any when we asked. It was worth a shot! I was definitely blown away by the confit. The service was efficient and quick, and the place is comfortable. There was a good mix of people there for lunch, and it wasn't too packed, I'd say about half full. Good options for lunch, I'd like to come back and try their dinner menu. read more

Niu kitchen is a little hole in the wall in downtown Miami. It is probably my new favorite restaurant in Miami. NIU is small, cozy and full of flavor. The service is good, which is one of the reason I like small restaurants with only a few tables. Gets packed for Lunch and Dinner, and rightly so. Every single dish I have tried is amazing.. their Duck (Anec?) is excellent, the ribs are to die for... the tartare. Even the coffee is good!! THEY STEAL NOT ONLY MY TIME, BUT ALSO MY MONEY. Our reservation was at 10 pm, but we were not seated until 10.50 pm. After the long wait, we ordered the Fuet tapa (Catalan sausage) - HIGHLY OVERPRICED. You will pay $9 for the nine thinnest Fuet slices you will ever see in your life. If it were an upscale restaurant, I would understand. However, the restaurant was DIRTY, the music was annoying (heavy metal), and the SERVICE WAS INSULTING. After dinner, we kindly called the manager to make him aware of the long wait (just as constructive feedback). The first question the manager made: "Are you from Miami?" - discriminating. He said that waiting 50 minutes to be seated (when you have a reservation) is regular in Miami. Besides being Catalan, we have been living in Miami for more than 12 years and eating out four days per week. When having a reservation, we have never waited more than 15 minutes to be seated. And in the case that happened, we have always been treated with respect and have been compensated for our waiting time. Oh! The seared foie was a strong contender for one of the best I've had, it's just a shame the rest of the meal didn't live up to my first bite, and the extensive positive reviews that made this place #1 on Yelp when sorting by rating. Wife's salad was also really good. The calamar was good at first but relied too much on salt for flavor, and the ends were too chewy to eat. Despite leaving them on my plate no one asked how the food is. Expected so much more from the dessert based on the photos, it's a shame the ganache was just lumped into a pot and made from cheap chocolate. Really great combination of tastes. Started with char broiled oysters which were meaty and very good. Had charbroiled octopus with a nice sauce. Bread dish with tomato topping was good. Don't let the nearly-unpronounceable (for this gringa) names do the dishes discourage you - NIU is where you want to be! Don't kid yourself though - the space is tiny. When the secret about NIU gets out, waiting times for a table will be off-the-charts. Try to come for lunch or at an odd time - luck could be on your side. The dinner menu is served all day, but during lunch, they offer a few additional options. I tried the llamantol (a casserole-like dish with layers of avocado, egg, and lobster - very yummy), the ous (poached eggs, topped with potato truffle cream and crispy jamon iberico, served with toast - ridiculously delicious, a must-order!), the les glories salad (with diced tomatoes, apples, mozzarella, olives and mixed greens), and the Spanish cheese trio (featuring drunken goat's milk cheese, manchego, and a third that escapes my memory). Everything was phenomenal, and the portions were decent sizes, especially when sharing among 2 or 3 people. I was quite content to split the 4 dishes noted above. Prices are reasonable - expect about $25-30 person if you're splitting several dishes, potentially less if you order 1 or 2 things for yourself. Who would have thought this gem existed in the heart of Downtown Miami! Inconspicuous from the outside, NIU is a picturesque, chic, and small NYC-style restaurant serving Spanish fare blocks away from Bayside Miami. We visited on a Friday night without a reservation and were seated at the bar promptly. I do recommend making a reservation because the narrow interior only seats about 40 people. NIU may be small, but the kitchen has a big heart and delivers nothing but mouthwatering bites. The dishes are small, but they can be shared. It offers a fine selection of Catalonian dishes. Keep in mind: not the best idea if you want to go with a big party. The place is tiny. But awesome! Must admit that they won my heart over by offering my favorite Rosé wine. From the Basque region of Spain, NIU kitchen offers Txakoli Rosé. A very hard to find wine in Miami. It happens pairs well with most of their dishes. I came here with some friends and order a variety of things so we could try as much as we could from this exciting little place. We ordered the Mussels -let me just mention that we were all fighting over the broth after- this is how amazing these were. The Pan Amb Tomaquet is great to have at the table as the dishes come around... the tomato paste is made from fresh tomatoes and you can taste it. The Wahoo tartare came next. Fresh, a bit zesty ... just perfect to prepare for what was to come. OUS! OUS my lord! I quote their menu: Poached eggs, truffled potato foam, Jamon Iberico and black truffle. I believe my life will never be the same after OUS. It was so perfect that the three of us were in complete silence for a while... trying to decipher all the different tastes and textures that we were presented with. Portions are the tiniest I've ever seen for the price. Cheesebourd literally had 3 parallel pieces of cheese, no crackers or bread whatsoever. This place is phenomenal. So many restaurants have tried to thrive here and got hit by the bullet until this bad boy got to the block. The place Is always packed and for a reason. Their dishes are not only creative but very finely assembled. Everything is a work of art here. I tried the wahoo tartare which was refreshing and extremely delicious. Next I went for the llamantol. It's basically a layer of mashed egg, avocado and Maine lobster. Each bite packed the punch it was supposed to. The ous was out of control ! It's a potato foam with a poached egg sprinkled with chives and jamon serrano which resembles an extremely rich soup. The Ous I recommend sharing but it's good enough to eat by yourself. I came here for a romantic Spanish dining experience and ended up placed in a dark corner with a speaker behind me blasting rock music. Service was a bit slow. And the food was quite bland. Nothing like transitional Spanish cuisine. Went for the popular huevos rotos dish; the eggs were so undercooked, almost raw. There was nothing delicious about this meal. Unlike other tapas places I've been too, I feel like NIU gives you a generous portion for what you're paying for which I really appreciated. I would totally be a frequent visitor if I worked near by. They only had one waitress running the floor (the is limited seating as the restaurant is quite small and intimate. We were able to get a table. The tapas we tried were good but not mind blowing in my opinion. The gazpacho was not my favorite. I think the ice cream in the soup was not really something I enjoyed. Starting off with the minute we sat down we were told we had to be out in an hour and 15 min. We were told they were totally booked at a certain hour. Ok, so we ordered a couple of dishes we heard were good. The mussels were very good and dipping the bread in the broth was even better. The Llamamtol, lobster, avocado, eggs was simply ok, and that may be an overstatement. The entrecot was tasty, but too fatty for my taste. For desset we had some sort of bread soaked in a milky sauce with caramelized sugar on top, again, just ok. This place is AMAZING! I honestly regret not having found it earlier considering it's so close from home. The place is small, but nicely decorated. We were there for dinner on a Sunday night with no reservation and were promptly accomodated, stroller and all. We started out with the Coca Escalivada and the Boqueró. Followed by the Ous and the Arròs. My favorite was definitely the Boqueró. Those anchovies are marinated to perfection! The Ous were definitely a close second. Cheese plate was laughable, with mediocre cheeses and minuscule portions. Mussels were not horrible, but the trinxat was the worst I've eaten in a long time. Acidic blood sausage and sad slices of uncured bacon over a bed of unseasoned, unsalted potatoes and cabbage. I felt like crying of despair. Avoid at all costs, horrible dining experience. We arrived here prior to an event we were attending at the Olympia theater because we heard the food was good. It's a small place with nice decor and friendly staff. But was a little pretentious , with its high end food presentation and tapas-style servings. The food was prepared nicely, simple and tasteful, but there wasn't any complexity in flavor. We ordered the octopus and anchovies app, which was tasty but nothing out of this world. We got the catch of the day, nicely cooked snapper with scalloped potatoes seasoned well (best part of dinner, IMO) and the ribs (which were cooked so the meat was tender and seasoned nicely). But I could have cooked the ribs and fish myself...nothing spectacular. And while it was tasty, I guess I had higher expectations for a "trendy" place such as this. As soon as they walk in, the restaurant feels very homie and the staff greeted us promptly. For drinks , my boyfriend had the sangria and j had a glass of cava. last night I visited NIU thinking that I would have a great time and amazing food due to the reviews they have. But, honestly, I have never ever had such a bad experience as the one I had last night. The service was completely disrespectful with us to the point that they would see me raise my hand and they would comment and laugh, or don't even come to our table or answer completely rude when asked something (the guy that served us was Freddy). We waited a loooong time to get our plates out of the table or even ask for the entres. Also, the arroz asopado was raw, the egg from the mushroom too. Came here with my friend and was a bit worried about the few vegetarian options, but everything we got ended up being AMAZING. I would highly, highly recommend. A gem in downtown Miami! The food was exceptional. We had the jamón ibérico, steak tartare, and fish special which was a dorada. Every dish was outstanding. The jamón came with pa am tomaquet. You can never go wrong with jamón ibérico. The tratare was fresh and delicately spiced. The dorada was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and scalloped potatoes. I loved the atmosphere too. It's a tiny place - very intimidate, quirky, and undoubtedly authentic. You can tell the owners put a lot of thought into every detail of the restaurant. I came to Miami for vacation and I'm back in New York City.. six months later and I'm still thinking about those truffled eggs, they were fan-tas-tic. We tried a number of other tapas paired with a glass of red wine each and I would have to say that the meals here are a little avant-garde with what they're trying to do. You won't see this style in many other places and although they are brave, I think some dishes work and some dishes don't work. Wahoo Tartare - was alright. I understand it was tare tare, but the flavor was more on the citrusy side Costelles - ribs were a little more on the tough side, although plated nice and sauced, I still felt like they were a little on the plain side Entrecot - Steak, and they managed to make me dislike it for some reason. I just don't think the vinagrette they put on it works.. at all. But it's four stars because those eggs are fantastic. read more

I think this place would be maxed out with 30 people, and then it would be impossible to have servers move around them. I arrived at 1:15 pm on a Wednesday afternoon. Luckily, there were only 10 patrons at the time. Let me say, this is about 1/3 of capacity. I couldn't imagine this place during lunch or dinner rush! The smell inside is wonderful and contrasts with the dirty streets of Miami. There is a nice dark atmosphere with some funky soft music in the background. There are wood planks on the walls and dark furniture on top of a cement floor. It's pretty manly. It seems pretty clean, too. My husband would love it. I enjoyed the lobster with avocado, 5 minute mashed eggs and the wonderful bursts of salty and fishy goodness from the roe. What a genius combination! The middleneck clams were amazing. They didn't taste clammy at all. They are sauteed in a broth with pork and that tamed them down tremendously. Even if you are not usually a fan, I highly recommend trying them.
