If it were an upscale restaurant, I would understand. However, the restaurant was DIRTY, the music was annoying (heavy metal), and the SERVICE WAS INSULTING. After dinner, we kindly called the manager to make him aware of the long wait (just as constructive feedback). The first question the manager made: "Are you from Miami?" - discriminating. He said that waiting 50 minutes to be seated (when you have a reservation) is regular in Miami. Besides being Catalan, we have been living in Miami for more than 12 years and eating out four days per week. When having a reservation, we have never waited more than 15 minutes to be seated. And in the case that happened, we have always been treated with respect and have been compensated for our waiting time. Oh! Really great combination of tastes. Started with char broiled oysters which were meaty and very good. Had charbroiled octopus with a nice sauce. Bread dish with tomato topping was good. Then had a dish with cooked peppers, onions, etc which was smooth. Finished with a paella that had mushrooms and sausage. Has 2 different desserts. The seared foie was a strong contender for one of the best I've had, it's just a shame the rest of the meal didn't live up to my first bite, and the extensive positive reviews that made this place #1 on Yelp when sorting by rating. Wife's salad was also really good. The calamar was good at first but relied too much on salt for flavor, and the ends were too chewy to eat. Despite leaving them on my plate no one asked how the food is. Expected so much more from the dessert based on the photos, it's a shame the ganache was just lumped into a pot and made from cheap chocolate. I was really excited about this place considering all the amazing reviews on Yelp. We arrived and the location had actually moved next door to a rock/sports bar vibe. Which is the 1st turn off. I came here for a romantic Spanish dining experience and ended up placed in a dark corner with a speaker behind me blasting rock music. Service was a bit slow. And the food was quite bland. I made this one of my favorite places to eat when visiting Brickell. The owner was great when she opened. Now that Brickell has went through gentrification she has lost her touch. The food is great, but the owner was to busy drinking. dancing around the small small space, and smoking outside to pay attention. We ordered the octopus and anchovies app, which was tasty but nothing out of this world. We got the catch of the day, nicely cooked snapper with scalloped potatoes seasoned well (best part of dinner, IMO) and the ribs (which were cooked so the meat was tender and seasoned nicely). But I could have cooked the ribs and fish myself...nothing spectacular. And while it was tasty, I guess I had higher expectations for a "trendy" place such as this. We decided to come here after reading the reviews to find out what is all the talk about. This is a very small restaurant. We came on a week night (July 2015) around 8pm... We were able to get a table. The tapas we tried were good but not mind blowing in my opinion. The gazpacho was not my favorite. I think the ice cream in the soup was not really something I enjoyed. Wine selection was average. Prices are high but average for Brickell, however this restaurant is located in downtown. Place is very small and service was average. last night I visited NIU thinking that I would have a great time and amazing food due to the reviews they have. But, honestly, I have never ever had such a bad experience as the one I had last night. The service was completely disrespectful with us to the point that they would see me raise my hand and they would comment and laugh, or don't even come to our table or answer completely rude when asked something (the guy that served us was Freddy). We waited a loooong time to get our plates out of the table or even ask for the entres. Also, the arroz asopado was raw, the egg from the mushroom too. When the secret about NIU gets out, waiting times for a table will be off-the-charts. Try to come for lunch or at an odd time - luck could be on your side. The dinner menu is served all day, but during lunch, they offer a few additional options. I tried the llamantol (a casserole-like dish with layers of avocado, egg, and lobster - very yummy), the ous (poached eggs, topped with potato truffle cream and crispy jamon iberico, served with toast - ridiculously delicious, a must-order!), the les glories salad (with diced tomatoes, apples, mozzarella, olives and mixed greens), and the Spanish cheese trio (featuring drunken goat's milk cheese, manchego, and a third that escapes my memory). Everything was phenomenal, and the portions were decent sizes, especially when sharing among 2 or 3 people. I was quite content to split the 4 dishes noted above. Prices are reasonable - expect about $25-30 person if you're splitting several dishes, potentially less if you order 1 or 2 things for yourself. It happens pairs well with most of their dishes. I came here with some friends and order a variety of things so we could try as much as we could from this exciting little place. We ordered the Mussels -let me just mention that we were all fighting over the broth after- this is how amazing these were. The Pan Amb Tomaquet is great to have at the table as the dishes come around... the tomato paste is made from fresh tomatoes and you can taste it. The Wahoo tartare came next. Fresh, a bit zesty ... just perfect to prepare for what was to come. OUS! OUS my lord! I quote their menu: Poached eggs, truffled potato foam, Jamon Iberico and black truffle. I believe my life will never be the same after OUS. It was so perfect that the three of us were in complete silence for a while... trying to decipher all the different tastes and textures that we were presented with. I think this place would be maxed out with 30 people, and then it would be impossible to have servers move around them. I arrived at 1:15 pm on a Wednesday afternoon. Luckily, there were only 10 patrons at the time. Let me say, this is about 1/3 of capacity. I couldn't imagine this place during lunch or dinner rush! The smell inside is wonderful and contrasts with the dirty streets of Miami. There is a nice dark atmosphere with some funky soft music in the background. There are wood planks on the walls and dark furniture on top of a cement floor. It's pretty manly. It seems pretty clean, too. My husband would love it. I enjoyed the lobster with avocado, 5 minute mashed eggs and the wonderful bursts of salty and fishy goodness from the roe. What a genius combination! The middleneck clams were amazing. They didn't taste clammy at all. They are sauteed in a broth with pork and that tamed them down tremendously. Even if you are not usually a fan, I highly recommend trying them. Their dishes are not only creative but very finely assembled. Everything is a work of art here. I tried the wahoo tartare which was refreshing and extremely delicious. Next I went for the llamantol. It's basically a layer of mashed egg, avocado and Maine lobster. Each bite packed the punch it was supposed to. The ous was out of control ! It's a potato foam with a poached egg sprinkled with chives and jamon serrano which resembles an extremely rich soup. The Ous I recommend sharing but it's good enough to eat by yourself. Unlike other tapas places I've been too, I feel like NIU gives you a generous portion for what you're paying for which I really appreciated. I would totally be a frequent visitor if I worked near by. I would also want to try the LLAMÀNTOL (15) and WAHOO TARTARE ($11) if I return. Go before it gets too popular and you can't find a seat. NIU is too good. They only had one waitress running the floor (the is limited seating as the restaurant is quite small and intimate. We were there for dinner on a Sunday night with no reservation and were promptly accomodated, stroller and all. We started out with the Coca Escalivada and the Boqueró. Enjoyed a delicious meal at NIU Kitchen on Thursday evening. Ordered a nice bottle of Spanish wine to go with our meal of Llamantol, Steak Tartare, Pan-Seared Foie, Ous, Costelles and Grilled Flap Steak. Quality I had heard many great things about NIU Kitchen over the years, but its less than convenient location delayed my visit. And it is a shame because for the most part NIU Kitchen lived up to the hype. Our meal began with the Llamntol. It did not come out how I expected, but this mixture of Maine lobster, cherry salmorejo, crudites, and trout roe was delicious. I loved how the salmorejo, which is a chilled tomato soup, really enhanced the flavor of the lobster. This was quickly followed by the Steak Tartare, a solid interpretation of the standard dish. I felt it worked quite well especially with the texture from the crunchy pieces of bread. Then came the Pan-Seared Foie, which was tremendous and presented in a very artful manner. I was not a big fan of the Ous, a dish of poached eggs, truffled potato foam, jamon iberico, and black truffle. However, my date absolutely adored it. I also was let down by the Costelles, which are baby back ribs confit. What I really wanted was some sauce to bring the dish more life. Not to say the dish was not prepared well and juicy, but I just felt it needed help. And next to the delicious Grilled Flap Steak that need was even more apparent. This already delicious steak was made even more magical with the addition of a rosemary vinaigrette. I really appreciated the way they elevated the steak, which could be seen as one of the safer items on the menu. Quantity The menu follows a tapas style, so prepare to share a selection of small, medium, and large plates. However, every single dish that appeared felt like the appropriate size. I would say one of the smaller plates and one large plate per person will leave any guest satisfied. Value I felt the menu was appropriately priced with the majority of small plates in the $15 range and the large plates around $25. I was also quite happy with a wine list that was more than reasonable. The majority of wines were in the $50 range, but the list still had a few pricier bottles for folks with more exorbitant tastes. Ambiance NIU Kitchen is found in the center of Downtown Miami. And while the streets around it are busy all day, it really becomes a ghost town at night. The restaurant is quite small and it has a very New York feel to it. Stuffed between two closed shop, it is a long, but skinny space that has tables almost on top of each other. The restaurant has no outdoor seating, and only around twenty seats inside. It has an industrial feel and decorative wooden paneling on the walls. In the evening the restaurant is dim and warm, giving it a cozy, romantic vibe. The music added to this atmosphere with a solid mixture of jazz and R&B, but at a level that prevented the din found in other snug restaurants. It really makes for a wonderful place to have a romantic meal. Crowd The space is very small, so reservations are an absolute must. On a Thursday evening every single table in the restaurant was filled. The vast majority of guests were couples, which felt appropriate with the romantic aura of the restaurant. Also, it was helpful as the space really could only hold one or two large groups. The age ranges of the couples however ranged wildly as there was a college aged couple, an elderly couple, and everything in-between. Service Initially I was a little skeptical of the service, as I got laissez-faire vibes when entering. However, the servers were wonderful and efficient, plus really knew how to navigate the small space. They provided great recommendations for both food and wine. Just know you will likely pour your own wine at some point, and they take no offense. Parking The parking situation in Downtown Miami is terrible. We ordered a car service to save ourselves the hassle of finding a lot or garage. Extra I truly enjoyed my dinner at NIU Kitchen. The beautiful space, the excellent service, and the solid food and wine makes it a restaurant worth a visit. Just be sure to make reservations and ditch the car before coming, because those are the most likely things to ruin your evening. read more

A gem in downtown Miami! The food was exceptional. We had the jamón ibérico, steak tartare, and fish special which was a dorada. Every dish was outstanding. The jamón came with pa am tomaquet. You can never go wrong with jamón ibérico. The tratare was fresh and delicately spiced. The dorada was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and scalloped potatoes. I loved the atmosphere too. It's a tiny place - very intimidate, quirky, and undoubtedly authentic. You can tell the owners put a lot of thought into every detail of the restaurant. One of the owners was taking the orders from the tables and made great suggestions. I can't wait to go back and try every dish on the menu. read more
