Neat, clean matcha dessert place located in Bellaire. As I walked in I was impressed by how modern the interior was. They had a huge variety of menu with matcha flavor. We decided to get the green tea shaved ice with red bean and also got a hot hojicha. The shaved ice was huge! Enough for 4 people to eat and the sweetness of red beans were perfect too. The matcha ice cream tasted good too. The shaved ice was milk based too, making the taste much more flavorful. My favorite was actually the hojicha. The taste was strong yet very toasty and I wanted to keep sipping it. Authentic matcha place where you can pick the concentration of matcha as you prefer! I thought this was really neat since not everyone likes the strong concentration. They also offer vanilla swirl soft serve, if you want something sweeter. The black sesame soft serve is also something I would recommend, not sweet but very savory. I wasn't a fan of the shaved ice though since the ice was watery and the toppings didn't mesh too well for me. I've never had to wait too long for the desserts here so that was always a plus. Ah - it's amazing we have TWO matcha places now. It's a cute place tucked in next to Kung Fu Tea. Nicely and simply decorated with ample seating, it was pretty busy the first time we went. I haven't gotten their parfait and shaved ice selections... yet. So I can only base my review off of: Yuzu float (with matcha soft serve): the drink was a yuzu (a citrus fruit you see a lot in Japan and Korea - especially those yuzu tea things you drink when you're sick) slush with matcha on top. I thought it was too yuzu-y but I was never THAT fond of the flavor. The matcha helped to mellow it out. Lavender Matcha Latte: I tasted the matcha. Was there really lavender in it?? Haha, it was more mellowed out with that milk they added to it. Matcha Toast: a slice of toasted (likely) wheat bread topped with matcha ice cream and drizzled with condensed milk with some sweet red beans (azuki beans) and mochi balls on the side. Not bad... but I didn't feel like it lived up to the price. Matcha Level 3: cause that's how I roll, I went for it. Yes, it is very strong. It's bitter but not that bitter. If you're drinking something too sweet, this'll help. A lot. I don't hate it but I don't love it. My husband who is a lover of black coffee actually liked it so... if you love black coffee with absolutely nothing in it, go for it. Matcha float with hojicha soft serve: you can't go wrong with roasted green tea. Like seriously. The flavors came together great! I just love tea... Came with a friend and ordered their matcha affogato and could not have been more disappointed. The order came out promptly on a late night but every component of this affogato was poor. The ice cream was not frozen properly and had a icy texture. They probably order cheap, bulk ice cream for this. The matcha portion itself was bitter yet at the same time tasteless. This does not inspire me to come back to try anything else they have. This tiny bowl was $4.95, making it easily one of the worst values for dessert in Bellaire of all places. I doubt this place will last much longer than Class 502 before it. On the bright side, they have a super friendly and helpful employee working the register/serving/cleaning. You gotta try the hojitcha soft serve here! It's not like matcha cafe where it's super smooth and almost smokey aftertaste (which I was not a fan of the aftertaste). I love matcha and places like this got my heart beating fast. I came on a Sunday after brunch and they were very empty. There were 2 employees in the back, who came out after our entrance. I love the idea that you can adjust your matcha level in your ice cream. After looking at the pictures on yelp, I decided to opt out for the soft serve, and not the ice cream (Note: ice cream is the only item you can adjust your matcha level for). The matcha lavenders were also very IG worthy and rich in matcha flavors, not so much lavender, but I did enjoy it. They had typical board games for people to hang out and play. They also reposted my picture on IG story 15 mins after it was posted. I love restaurants who invest in their social media so it's a plus for me. I ordered a matcha shaved ice, which had matcha cookies in place of mochi balls (sadly, they ran out). In spite of the matcha ice cream, cookies, and red bean toppings, it seemed a little bland. It wasn't the worst shaved ice I've ever had, but simply put, it wasn't anything spectacular. Some other notes about Meccha Matcha: - Friendly staff who are very helpful when it comes recommending matcha levels (they let you sample different levels) - Cute dog and cat wall mural I'm not eager to come back to Meccha Matcha anytime soon, but that doesn't mean it's on my blacklist. Matcha is the Asian equivalent of pumpkin spice. It gets basic Asians riled up the same way that pumpkin spice does to sorority girls. Being the basic person I am, I was pumped to see a matcha place open in Chinatown! It is right next to Kung Fu Tea (don't get me started on how terrible the one in Chinatown is) and the sign is slightly blocked by a tree in front of it. When I walked in, I saw a familiar face. The owner, Joseph, was someone I knew from college! He owns a Meccha Matcha in Dallas (my hometown Plano to be exact!), and he is a great guy that I want to see do well! But the product they serve here is freaking fantastic. I tried both the ice cream and the soft serve. There are three levels to the ice cream (Level 1, 2, and 3). Level 3 (apparently the self-proclaimed strongest matcha flavor in the world) is extremely strong, a little bit sweet, and somewhat bitter. I personally liked Level 2 better, so I would recommend that one if you get ice cream. If you have to decide between ice cream or soft serve, I would go with the soft serve, which is considered Level 1. The smooth texture and sweetness to the matcha made it my favorite. Get it with the waffle cone! I went to Matcha Cafe Maiko the day after I went to Meccha Matcha, and I prefer Meccha Matcha. The soft serve at Matcha Cafe Maiko tastes more grainy, which I personally don't enjoy. I will definitely be back to Meccha Matcha! read more

Since matcha maiko closed, decided to try this place out. Tried the softserve, it was not good, matcha flavor was weak compared to matcha maiko. The concept is pretty similar to Matcha Maiko, probably their biggest competitor. But this is a more convenient location. They have different levels of matcha intensity, which is nice. We tried their matcha float and matcha shaved ice. The float had way too much ice, felt like half a cup. The guy was nice enough o fill it with more matcha ice cream to make up for it. He said that's the only way the ice cream could float...the shaved ice was ok, the ice wasn't the fluffy kind, more the American kind, with matcha syrups. It was a big portion, enough to share. They are officially opening this Saturday. It's a cute place, worth trying once. But I feel like China Town has too many similar places for dessert and drinks nowadays (so many new places opened for ice cream and milk teas in the last 2 years) it's not as special anymore. read more

Another matcha specialty place has come to Houston! I was excited to see this franchise come since hearing about it in Dallas. I went to the grand opening day with my boyfriend and we decided to try three different items. Hojicha soft serve: i really, really liked the flavor! I have not had anything like it at all. If you don't know what hojicha is, it is a roasted flavored green tea. You can actually taste the roasted-ness of the tea! The flavor is quite mellow and goes well with the level of sweetness served. I felt that the amount served was also quite generous! Grade 3 matcha ice cream: I've never had anything like this to compare it to. If you appreciate matcha and strong tea flavors in general, I think you'll find this enjoyable (I know I did). The flavor was dense, very rich, and sweet. I didn't find myself overwhelmed by it at all. I also didn't find it grainy or too powdery. Hojicha latte: we got this drink at half the sweetness and hot. I'm not the biggest fan of drinking tea like this, but I found the hojicha flavor to be very strong. It left a slightly dry aftertaste for me, but my boyfriend really enjoyed the drink. Overall, I'm very happy that Chinatown got a new matcha specialty place in its arsenal of desserts. It is a liiiittle pricy, but definitely worth checking this place out at least once (especially if you appreciate matcha)! Edit: so I also tried the mixed soft serve with hojicha and matcha. The place had a really cute interior and an easy-to-read menu. The employees were super sweet and accommodating to any questions I had. I tried the summer matcha and mix soft serve (matcha and vanilla) and thoroughly enjoyed the soft serve. The matcha wasn't overwhelming and paired with the vanilla nicely. I don't usually like ice cream, but I would definitely recommend this. However, I didn't really like the summer matcha, which consists of matcha, strawberry and sparkling soda. I think what threw off the drink was the sparkling soda; it just didn't blend with the drink very well. All you really taste is the soda and strawberry. Creamy, not icy consistency and good flavor - Owners were friendly, knowledgeable, and up front about the Level 3 ICE CREAM still being too soft - Offers almond milk as alternative! Disclaimer: - They have BOTH soft serve and ice cream. Soft serve, based on the menu, does not have level options to choose from. The ICE CREAM has 3 levels with the 3rd one being 55% matcha. The "mehs": - Ice cream overall needs more R&D. Honestly, ice cream is super difficult to nail down: water to milk to the freezing method. It is a science and while I am ecstatic to see level 3, level 2 was overpowering with matcha but not complemented by anything else. It also started icing, so it needs to be worked on both flavor and technique wise. - Matcha Summer (iced) is a non milk beverage with matcha, sparkling water, and strawberry syrup. I asked for less sweet and they delivered that. However, the drink was still too gritty, and I don't think it was supposed to be like that. I tried a brand in LA's Little Tokyo, and their matcha drink is smooth, strong, and not gritty at all. This drink has potential, but the gritty part needs to be fixed. - Hot Matcha Black Sesame with almond milk left much to be desired. The matcha and black sesame flavor weren't very forward, and you can barely taste black sesame. So far, we will definitely come back for the soft serve, but I hope the owner(s) work on refining some of the other menu items so they can have a solid line-up. read more

It's chain dessert shop and a competitor for Maiko Matcha in Chinatown. I was interested in going and came for the soft opening a week before it's grand opening. It took over the Class 502 rolled ice cream/boba shop in the Dun Huang Plaza and I don't know whether that was a good move or not, considering Twisted Love and Aqua S were close by. The decor of the restaurant was very strange, cat and dog themed (super cute but weird for a dessert place...). The people were nice and explained the menu to us: ice cream (had different levels of matcha), soft serve, drinks, and pastries including a matcha toast. I went with vanilla and matcha soft serve and my friend got the 55% matcha ice cream. Mine was super creamy and if I had to compare with Maiko I would say Maiko is slightly better. As for the 55% matcha ice cream I would say it's strong...super strong. If you're a hard core matcha lover you'd be all over it. My friend enjoyed it a lot but it was too bitter for me. A group actually came in thinking this was Maiko (awkward) and the servers convinced them to stay and try it (which they did).
