It's about time I reviewed this place. I was on a hunt for a taro cake for a while for my birthday cake and I finally came across my first one here at Nini. I walked in and, luckily, they had a vanilla cake with taro available that very day. It was layers of fresh taro paste between spongy vanilla cake. The cream on the outside wasn't too sweet and neither was the inside - the ultimate compliment of "not too sweet." I came back the next day to get the taro mochi bread because they gave me a $1 coupon with the cake and I was still really craving a taro pastry. I loved it. I also came back again for another birthday cake. This time, I got the vanilla cake with strawberry and pudding, which was a hit amongst everyone. I personally did not like the pudding, but everyone else did. The cream was surprisingly my favorite part, with how airy and slightly sweet it was, complementing the soft vanilla sponge cake very well. I love this place. Yeah the breads and stuff are good but check the fridge for Gua Bao. The yummiest braised pork belly sandwiches. You'll need to warm and assemble at home but they give you everything you need including the crushed peanuts and pickled veggies! If you're a "not too sweet" girly and don't like too much whip cream like me, order the crispy taro cake! It's not pretty like most birthday cakes and even the small size is very large but it's so good and always gets gobbled up by family when we bring it to gatherings. I wasn't familiar with most of the items so I asked a lot of questions but beware that the staff really doesn't speak English at all. I chose three items and my total came to $9.90. The woman explained to me that any charges under $10 incur of 50 Cent fee. I asked her if she could pardon that and told her that was pretty ridiculous and bad customer service but she just laughed and said there was nothing she could do . I love that it's not too sweet and dense, although I do like Asian cream fruit cakes as well. A half sheet for $36 is reasonable and they can sometimes accommodate last minute orders. I've ordered a week in advance, a couple days in advance, and even two hours in advance and they still have it ready and delicious. They offer a full sheet for $72 but I can't imagine how gargantuan a full sheet size must be. read more

Nini Bakery has opened for 20+ years, but I never thought about visiting them because it wasn't very attractive from its looking. Such a small and old business with ordinary fruit cakes. Plus, I am so used to other popular places with fancy cakes. However, my family happened to look for traditional fruit cake and we decided to try it out; especially they had taro cake. They were amazing! We got two cakes: vanilla cake with strawberries and vanilla cake with taro fillings. I love them both; so does my family. The cakes were very fresh including the fruits. The taro cake was a little heavy but for taro lovers, the thick taro paste was so satisfying. I will recommend this place to people loves traditional vanilla cake with cream. Time arrived: 12:30pm on a Sat Crowd: no one was there Service: it was fine. They greeted us and let us browse around Food: there were a variety of different typical Chinese or Hong Kong style bakery. There were a few baked goods I don't think I've encountered before so it was nice to try a few new things. There is a lot less food as these bakeries are busiest early in the morning so we didn't get the full scope of options. The food was all behind see-through doors and you slide out the drawer to grab what you want so it's pretty hygienic for the most part. I think overall, majority of the food is made in house except for a few items. Main ingredients you'll see in these options would be hard boiled egg, ham, garlic, pork sung etc. Nothing too fancy. Still good eats. Inside: the place is very small and narrow tucked between two other stores. We missed it the first time when trying to search for it. The place is pretty dimly lit and the place itself isn't as 'clean' and 'sparkling' like some chain places are but that's fine. I ordered a 10 inches cake and the way they packaged the cake made me so mad and the worst thing was the fruit mango not fresh at all. My parents got me a birthday cake from Nini Bakery. I had heard about Nini for a while and had been wanting to try it. It lived up to the reputation and delivered. We got a Chocolate Cappucino Mousse Cake. I was worried it might be too sweet, but it wasn't at all. It was not overwhelming, but still chocolate-y enough where you could appreciate the chocolate flavor of it. The coffee taste was very subtle. The blueberries and blackberries were also very tart and a nice accent to the sweetness of the cake. I would definitely come back to try their other pastries some time. read more
