This is the opus for the scion (scioness?) of Peter Chang fame; a tour de force in the context of COVID 19. I can't imagine what opening a new restaurant property during a pandemic might be, but the NiHao concept is delightfully distinct from Q and the rest of the Peter Chang stable of restaurants including Mama Chang. Incidentally, the NiHao symbol is a playful design that takes the words 妳 and 好 and places the root character together in a simulacrum of a fish, and stacks the other elements together using bone-script style (甲骨字 ) ancient Chinese - the style written around 3-4000. Very cool, and I really have to meet the designer sometime. Having renovated the old Fork and Wrench property, the ceramic tile colors a bit atypical for the region - in a charming way - reminding me of shops from the Meatpacking district with the almost subway looking tile work. I hope to try out the bar seating area when COVID is in check. One of the most difficult things to do is time carry-out. Freshly cooked foods can be crisp and hot - something that immediately dissipates with time and cold air. Not something that can be handled by any sort of delivery. The menu features many items that are best served completely, freshly out of the kitchen. During this age of COVID, it's no question that menus will need to adapt to the reality of delayed eating. Selecting with this in mind, or being willing to eat in one's car will likely yield a more proper experience of the food. We had the Whole Peking Duck (for 2) which was moist and full of flavour and duck goodness. The sliced vegetables, buns, and sauces were all excellent and showed good sourcing of ingredients. With the whole duck, they offer an additional duck soup base and noodles for use with the duck body which was also very thoughtfully put together. For the diner who's willing to put in the effort, the duck soup experience is a serious plus. I'm biased - I have really enjoyed high-end Chinese dining in HK, TW and China and am willing to part ways with fairly serious cash in the process. I'm glad we have a higher end Chinese dining experience here in Baltimore. Post COVID (when might that be?), I'll definitely be back in the flesh. Well worth the price in my book. We ordered NiHao one more time tonight to try and give it another chance. Again, we were SO disappointed. We had to pay for rice and they gave us BURNT rice. Burnt rice should be free. As an asian american growing up on chinese food, i appreciated the flavors but was extremely overpriced. Deets: 1) mapo tofu: tofu was delicious, homemade. The flavors were authenticly sichuan, yet with a touch of americanness. 2) honey roasted pork w peanuts: delicious but dry. Appreciated the different layers of flavors, including cilantro, vinegar, peanuts, etc. 3) eggplant with tofu: sweet and pleasant, not too authentic. Jaw drop at the price. A co-worker recommended this spot.. I had been meaning to try because..well.. I am a huge Peter Chang fan! I arrived at 5 10 pm for a 5:15 pm reservation.. I was greeted by an empty receptionist area and a phone that wouldn't stop ringing... A young lady pepped from behind the bar area and said, "Please wait a second ( there was an obvious language barrier). Anywho, I got past all of that and was taken upstairs.. I ordered the creamy mushroom soup... tremendously bland.. My daughter got the hot & sour.. it was just terrible.. We moved on and ordered the crab & pork soup dumplings (FANTASTIC), chicken lettuce wrap (AWESOMESAUCE), and the pork buns (just ok).. Modern Chinese food. A step above, really several steps above your typical Chinese spot. Refined, but not uptight. COVID-19 means take out only for now. That's acceptable for this more polished Chinese food experience, though it seems like it'll be even better once customers can dine in and experience the vibe and kind service. We got the mushroom charred rice cakes, steamed cod with scallion soy, ma po tofu, and black pepper beef onglet. All were very tasty! They threw in a singed rosemary soda and Chinese walnut cookie on the house as an apology for the wait while picking up. That was a nice gesture considering it was their first day open and they were understandably still working out the expected logistics kinks. As far as I could tell, all the employees were taking COVID-19 safety measures. This is exactly the kind of Chinese restaurant that Baltimore has needed! A fantastic addition to the neighborhood, dare I say even a fantastic addition to the entire greater Baltimore area! Can't wait to sample the rest of the menu. Newcomers should note that the menu is a small/medium plates concept, so don't expect overflowing "Thank you / Enjoy" take out boxes like you would from a Chinese-American carry out shop. The soup dumplings and pork chili wontons were good. The bubble pancake, garlic cucumber roll, tofu skin salad, bamboo fish, and crispy calamari are all at the top of my list, unique and fantastic!!! The dry-fried green beans were ok. The chili oil flounder fillet and chili oil braised beef were more of a soup and were also just ok. The special which was more of a general Tso's chicken wasn't anything special either. The crispy golden pear and the black egg custard buns for dessert were very different and so good. I don't recommend sitting on the second floor on a hot summer day. The AC doesn't work well and it's uncomfortable eating spicy food in a hot, humid room. If you want to cool off, you'll need to hang out in the bathroom as that room gets plenty of AC. read more

We love Ni Hao! The food and cocktails are inventive and unique, and the ambiance is lovely. The space isn't the largest, so I'd definitely recommend a reservation. We have been for a standard dinner as well as a duck themed prix fixe - the food is always delicious and strikes the right balance between being elevated from standard Chinese food without being too "out there". The food is amazing, but the service could be much better, so we usually order takeout. We had to ask for water, glasses for our water, and utensils. The waiter and host were chatting and seemed uninterested in anything else. If you do not mind poor service, try this place; the food will not disappoint. My family enjoyed eating here so much! Everything was delicious, cooked to perfection, and had so much flavor. Highly recommend the 5 Spice Beef, but really everything we tried was yummy. LOVED it! This is not your typical carry out Chinese food (of which I am not a fan). More elevated flavors and a lot more special. Prices are high end, but so is the food. Used to think well of this spot but it has been in a spiraling decline for over a year now - it's kitchen and staff have been leaving and the food is now like a greasy spoon, portions are small and overpriced and if there is anything you're unhappy with, frequent patron or not, for all they care you can choke. We had an excellent take out dinner from Nihao. We started with delicious spring rolls in a thin crispy wrapper. The rice cakes were chewy wafers with mushrooms and red onions in a dark smoky sauce. The Brussel sprouts were interdicting grilled with a tangy citron sauce. Study fried vegetables had lots of pea pods in a buttery sauce. The silky tofu was smothered in a fiery mapo sauce with tiny bits of Szechuan peppers. The Peking duck was excellent. We finished with delicious cookies. We got NiHao takeout on their first day. The cumin lamb and corn cob was our favorite as it was flavored very well. The Peking duck was also delicious. Service was very good. Bottom Line: Did you know this place is on Esquire's Best restaurants for 2020?! MUST TRY! Such a great Chinese restaurant and a modern twist to some of the common dishes you'd normally get. Also in our opinion great prices. We came from DC so it's cheaper than our Chinese food so we didn't complain about it! Comes out to $30-35 a person and we were full! Food: What did we order...a few different things! But there's one obvious MUST HAVE: - Peking Duck: Whether it's a half or full order, it's a must order. Well roasted and juicy with super crispy skin. The whole wheat buns might throw you off but they were extremely airy. Sauces were great as well. Order a half at least just to try with your group. - Crispy Bamboo Fish: I guess they change the fish on different days/weeks but we had catfish and this was a super tasty dish. Perfectly crispy fried, a little dry peppered and juicy. 100% must get if you're a fishy person! Only $13! - Wonton Soup: Amazing dumplings. The broth was straightforward and delicious, but those dumplings made the dish. Well seasoned pork filling with what seemed like homemade wonton wrapper. Can split between two people for a good taste. Totally worth $8 - Shrimp dumplings: These were less than necessary to order. They were tasty and good, but straightforward and can get the flavor at other Chinese restaurants. Not so much worth the $11. - Brussel Sprouts: Did you even eat out if you didn't order that restaurant's version of roasted/fried brussel sprouts? These were fantastic and nice and lemony if you are into that. Well cooked and lots of flavor. Somewhat on the softer side so not so fried. Drinks: Only ordered one drink and I can't seem the find it online but just ask for the whiskey based Old fashioned that has duck-washed bourbon. It was INCREDIBLE! Smooooooth as can be and sweet. Even the lady had a sip and didn't want to spit it up! Final Thoughts: Top level Chinese spot with modern take on some dishes that will have you wanting to come back for sure. Every single thing we ordered was absolutely delicious. We ordered the cocktails GaGa and the Dongzhi Collins which we almost too beautiful to drink! They were both delicious. We pretty much ordered the whole menu and couldn't even decide what we loved the most. The Peking Duck is life changing! Might be because it's fairly new but not much effort put into the decor that is cold, harsh lighting, and sparse. Not convivial at all. Tables aren't set, no table sets or table clothes, just bare tables like a bar. The service is friendly and efficient. The dishes are disappointing , meat balls uninteresting, fried eggplant pretty good but the green goop underneath very unappealing, the porc dish was mostly fat, and wontons are good but don't have enough stuffing. My first takeout order from NiHao was amazing, but not my second visit. I ordered the peppercorn flounder, which I could not finish, because it was prepared mapo style; mapo causes me to sneeze severely and I would not have ordered it had it been appropriately labeled. I also did not like that the menu labeled cream of broccoli and hot and sour soup as "Amish mushroom soup" (I did research and learn that the Amish do make cream of mushroom soup but it wasn't anything special and slightly deceptive as was the "Hot & Sour soup & duck" (no duck was in the soup). Finally, my son's black pepper scallop dish was more on the level of a scallop dish from a Chinese takeout restaurant -- the scallops were dime-sized. I will give NiHao another chance after my learning experience. In all fairness, my family did have an amazing takeout meal from there last year (crispy bass, lamb, and fried rice entree). We had a wonderful meal last night. Our reservation was at 6 and the restaurant was mostly empty. We ordered the vegetarian dumplings and calamari to start. Both were delicious. The dipping sauce for the dumplings was wonderful and the calamari nicely spiced and crisp. I had a half a Peking duck and my wife the shredded pork and garlic sauce. Both delicious. The garlic sauce was sublime. Only complaint was the table was small for the number of plates and once the 7:00 crowd arrived it was cramped. Small complaint compared to the delicious food. One of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore. My partner and I love the food and drinks here. We are both vegan and found they have a good amount of options for us. A particular favorite is the tofu & broccoli dish and the Chinese broccoli. My sister who is not vegan says she especially likes the Shanghai noodles. I also really appreciate the service here. I had ordered a dish I thought could be made vegan on Ubereats and even though I missed all their attempts to contact me about it, NiHao called twice, left a message, and wrote a regretful and thoughtful note on the dish to tell me it wasn't vegan. Completely my fault and I am really glad I didn't unknowingly eat it, just gave it to my sister. Thank you so much! read more

We visited NiHao after hearing the hype of its recent James Beard nomination for "Best New Restaurant." We tried the fingerling potatoes (surprising group favorite), eggplant, char siu pork, and mapo mian dishes which brought a good amount of heat. We also ordered a whole peking duck for the table which came with whole wheat baos on the side. The meat was not as tender as we would have liked but altogether with the onion/cucumber/sauces, it made for a tasty bite. The staff at the restaurant were also extremely accommodating and gave great recommendations for drinks (including a baiju tasting menu and pretty neat Chinese lagers). Taking a step back, NiHao doesn't have the charm of a hole-in-the-wall, family-owned Chinese restaurant (it's about as authentic as a place named NiHao can be). But it has its own eclectic, mix of Eastern & Western design that is worth the visit. Each floor feels like a new environment, and the restaurant definitely has the space for larger groups! read more
