The public karaoke on weekends can sometimes get a very long queue (like over an hour) if you happen to be there at the same time as a large group. So, I recommend booking a room if you're there to sing with friends. There have been two bartenders when I've gone in the past and they're very efficient! They're fast with shots (even special ones) and keep things flowing. I was a guest here for a friend's birthday party recently and I have to say that even though I'm not big on Karaoke, they really have a nice setup here if you're renting a room. They also have a general area that may or may not have a cover charge. We however were in a rented room. The sound system has pretty much any song you can imagine and it seems like it's the actual song so you can have the actual singer harmonizing with you to make you sound better even if you have absolutely zero singing ability *look of shame*. As a guest, I didn't have to worry about paying for this place but I was curious how the whole things works and apparently reserving the room is $100 plus a $350 drink minimum. You can do the math to see how many people you need to reach the drink minimum. Our group did not have any problems with that. Apparently, this is the standard way these places work but thought I'd mention it because a couple of years ago, someone I had just met wanted to get some people together for another karaoke place and split the cost and she only had like 3 other people lined up and when finding out how much that was going to cost me, I realized I had made a terrible terrible mistake and bailed out so just something to keep in mind if you're only having a handful of friends. Speaking of the drink prices, I felt that single liquor drinks and beer were very reasonably priced but another friend who had the espresso martinis found out that at $17 or so a pop, they add up really quickly. I will be honest, at first this place seemed super-chill. We had come from the Texans game and I had on some very tall wedges/tennis shoes wth tiny surface area on the bottoms and rubber grip. I had less than ONE drink at the game, was super-pumped about the karaoke situation, owner SEEMED reasonable, however, they should have the steps from the stage refigured. Reason? I fell - not because of intoxication - that would have been more acceptable. Shoes/stairs/situation. He then refused my much-desired drink after singing, not believing I was just a drunk. I've been to Spotlight twice and both times was for a private party. The room was a nice size (I think capacity was 25 or so). It had a small stage area and plenty of seating. They have a decent song selection. The computer system to select songs is pretty straightforward to use. It's nice not having to wait hours to sing a song. They don't serve food, but you can bring in outside food for your party. The waitress was great about checking in on a regular basis whenever we needed drinks. Parking is mostly street. Be sure to read the signs because some of the meters do not expire at 6 pm like the ones downtown. If you can carpool or Uber, that would be the way to go. read more

We reserved a section to host a bachelorette party and when we arrived, our section had a leak. We asked for accommodations and the manager was very rude to us and dismissive. He raised his voice with us when we asked to be moved to another section. His reasoning was because the other section was reserved. (The same size booth next to us was empty and he said 20 people reserved it. How?? It was 8 of us so idk how 20 would fit.) There is a way to talk to customers who want to be accommodated. Instead of treating us with respect after we were inconvenienced because of a leak in the section they chose for us, we were treated as the inconvenience for not wanting to stay in that section after he offered to just move the table down from the booth. Very recently, we had booked Spotlight Karaoke Midtown for a university event. Although, there was miscommunication and the staff was late 45 minutes to the event, I have to commend this business for their service afterwards. They went above and beyond to get us whatever we needed when they arrived. They were not only apologetic and urgent, they extra mile'd and check on us every so often to make sure we were serviced appropriately. Charlie was an amazing host, and very accommodating even when he ran late. For this, they deserve 4 stars. I almost wrote a negative review but seeing how Charlie and the team reacted after the inconvenience, they definitely deserve the credit. From start to finish, Charlie the owner of Spotlight was a pleasure to work with. He and his staff made the process of reserving my private room, visiting the location, and having my birthday party a pleasure. The website gives you an accurate view of the rooms you are reserving, the deposit and contract was easy to complete over the phone and through email. My daughter and I viewed the room, 2 days before my party to see how we would like to set up. I started with Room 1, then changed to Room 2, due to an increase in guest. Thank God, Room 2 was available, Charlie and staff (wonderful lady in the office) allowed change, 3 days before my party. I had never did Karoke before and was truly looking forward to the laughter it was going to bring. Word of advice, practice before you go! Well honestly don't think it would matter, you don't sound the same as you do in the shower. We arrived a little early to get a feeling of the process. DJ had to keep coming to fix our mess ups until my young adult niece arrived and took control. Thank you DJ, he was patient, very helpful, and knew exactly how to solve our problems all 15,000 times. Just joking, wasn't 15,000 times but it was alot. We were reserved our own waitress, and she was very attentive to our needs. Due to the amount of my guest, or shall I say the room, I had a $400 drink minimum to meet in order to receive my $200 deposit back. Well, guess what...there are a bunch of drinkers in my life apparently, because I was only $4 short of that limit. Yep, I paid $12 for my party, July 13-14. $6 for my H2O, $4 for drink minimum, and $2 for her gratuity. Party paid for itself, and we all had a absolute wonderful time. If you are looking for a place to do Karaoke, give SPOTLIGHT a try. Charlie, is and was the best, I could have asked for! The only downside to the entire process is it is located in Midtown and we all know parking is not the best downtown, and the fact that Spotlight charges a $10 parking fee, without valet parking. I found it cool you can reserve a private party room, but if you're unable to do so, you can reserve a table in the main room. I definitely recommend reserving a table. I'm not sure what happens if you just walk in, but I think I read if you reserve, you don't have to pay the cover charge (we didn't). There's a 2 drink minimum to sing a song and they have computers in the back with a list of songs for you to write on your card. Wide selection of songs. To the left once you walk in there are a set of 3 computers which have a list of all their songs that you can search through. After you've chosen one, write the title artist and number on the sheets of paper provided and give it to the dj. Words on screen are easy to read; microphone and audio works well. No complaints about the karaoke. In order to have a private room, you're charged $100. But all in all that isn't too too much if you've got a reasonable group going. Norris is the BEST PART of this place! I needed a last minute place to hang out with one of my favorite colleagues that was visiting at the time so we stumbled upon this Karaoke bar and it was a hit. This place is generally fun, even for someone who isn't very into karaoke, but it just seems to be more hassle than it's worth, especially if you've been to the Galleria location off Fountainview. The crowd is generally not that big (probably because parking is so terrible), so if you're in the main room, you can get multiple chances to sing in a night, especially if you show up early and beat the crowd to get your first song in. Their music selection is fairly decent, but some people have told me that it tends to be a bit outdated. I don't go for karaoke often enough to know the difference, but I've been told that Glitter, Genji, and Gonzo all have better selections, especially when it comes to more modern music. The drinks are pretty mediocre, and are way too weak for the price. On my last visit, I ordered four rum and cokes and it seemed like there was barely any rum in them. They charged $7 per drink (for WELLS) and tacked on a 20% gratuity because we were with a group. I've got to dock them a star for terrible service, though. The waitress was generally inattentive except for right after we received our drinks, and we routinely had to flag them down. They don't have tap water, so you have to buy their overpriced bottled water. read more

I've been going to Spotlight regularly for over 5 years at both Midtown and Westheimer locations so I finally feel qualified to give a decent assessment of this establishment. We mostly frequent the Midtown location although the points set forth here apply to both places. We have had held parties/gatherings here and invited our friends. It is a place with a cozy ambiance. My very first visit many moons ago I sang at least 3 times. I had no clue what to do to sing. I saw the monitors in the back to find your song choices. They have a weird keyboard that I initially did not know how to operate. However being the astute person I am I figured it out. Now that I'm a veteran karaoker, I realize that their list of songs is online on their website so I just look it up on my phone or tablet. If you don't see a song on the list, just ask the KJ. I have found a few songs not listed. Yes, they have a 2 drink minimum to sing. 1 drink to start. Another drink to continue. Beer and non alcoholic drinks count. Afterall It IS a bar first and foremost. Thats how they make their dough. I can't knock it. Hey, if there is a night I don't wanna buy drinks, I simply karaoke at home. Problem solved. No, they don't offer free tap water. Refer to the point above...They are a bar first and foremost. If they offered free tap water SOME people would use Spotlights glasses and drink tap water all night, so I don't blame them!!! This is how they make their dough. They don't charge you to sing. If you're out for a night of karaoke, surely a few $'s for a bottle of spring water won't break your bank. After all, you're not simply purchasing water alone... you have a turn of karaoke with it. If a bottle of water does break your bank, perhaps you should stay home and karaoke?? Speaking of drinks, no they aren't cheap but then again cocktails these days aren't cheap anywhere. You get your money's worth. If you find a place where they are, let me know. Or buy soda, water, beer, or wine. These are most economical. If you truly wanna imbibe on a budget hit up the liquor store, purchase a fifth or pint and drink (and subsequently karaoke) at home. Problem solved. We are on a first name basis with many of the bartenders I guess because we come sooo much. This place is like Cheers. Occasionally we pay cash for drinks but we usually open a tab for convenience. I usually inquire of the drink price if unsure before I order so I know what I'm purchasing and what to expect with the final bill. We show respect and human decency and the bartenders respond in kind. Plus we are not afraid to tip for services rendered by the bartenders. Don't forget to tip your KJ. Our favorite is Daniel. He's a cool guy and he takes his KJ duties seriously and does not show partiality. Simply being a kind human being goes a long way. Is it perfect? Ummm... no place is perfect. But they try their best and they have always been very hospitable to us. I love coming here. After a while you see the same fellow karaokers and its nice to come to a familar spot to share a few songs and support each other. You will have to pick what's most important to you to know how to proceed to have the most enjoyable experience. There is something for everyone here. Is your focus primarily singing? Or are you more interested in partying? If you're a party animal come late Friday and Saturdays. At this time the crowd has lots of energy and the music selections are more upbeat. If you have a large party make reservations Fridays or Saturdays or else you'll be stuck at the bar or standing. However, if you're not a party animal but just wanna sing and relax then come Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays EARLY. You'll have a lot of opportunities to sing if you come early. The Westheimer location is also open on Sundays which is a great time to come if you just wanna sing but not so much party. Are you and your friends shy? Inquire about reserving a private room. We're not party animals... We just like to enjoy a drink, relax, and sing. We like the sound system here. We usually come early and are out by 10 pm. No cover charge usually on Wednesdays Thursday or Fridays at Midtown. Also at the Midtown location there is free parking on Wednesdays and Thursdays but parking is $10.00 on Fridays and Saturdays. However, you always have the option to park free on the street. The Westheimer location has free parking. There is a cover charge on Saturdays for both locations. I can only speak for the ladies room, but it is always clean and the stalls are whole doors that go to the floor for privacy. The Westheimer location has a kitchen that opens late with a selection of food choices. The Midtown location does not but you are welcome to bring food (but no drinks...it's a bar!!). There are several decent food places in walking distance nearby including an excellent Vietnamese restaurant right next door. I give the place 5 stars!! My girlfriend and I are semi-regulars at Spotlight, so clearly we enjoy it. I'll make a list of positives and negatives below! Positives: - The DJs are nice and fair (I've never felt like someone paid the DJ to cut in front of me in line). - The drinks are reasonably priced - I've never walked away from Spotlight wondering how the hell I spent so much money. - The bartenders are reasonably attentive (although sometimes I feel like it takes a while to get their attention, especially as more people arrive). - I always make a reservation ahead of time (sometimes just a few hours previous), and we always get seats. There's also no entry fee if you make a reservation (at least from my experience), so you should definitely do it! Not Positive and Not Negative: - Not that many people actually sing. This is pretty cool if you like to sing (and I do!), since you get to go up on stage a lot more than Glitter, for example. At the same time, it's sometimes nice for there to be a bunch of different people singing, since you get more variety that way. - The crowd sometimes isn't that big, and it often doesn't seem like anyone is listening to you sing. This is actually good if you're nervous about performing, since there's virtually no pressure, but it's also nice to get energy from the crowd. I feel like the crowd at Glitter can also ignore performers, though, so this issue isn't unique to Spotlight. Make sure you give love to the performers - you're at a karaoke bar, so appreciate the singing! Negatives: - Sometimes the drinks aren't mixed super well. That being said, usually the problem is that they're MORE alcoholic than you want, so things could be worse! - As mentioned by other reviews, you have to pay for water, which is a bit frustrating. - The song list is perfectly OK, but I think Glitter's song list is bigger. Overall, I like Spotlight more than Glitter, even though the latter is busier. I've never felt like the DJ at Spotlight has treated me unfairly, whereas the same isn't true for Glitter. read more

I'm of the opinion that karaoke is better experienced while under the influence of alcohol. My group showed up at Spotlight relatively sober and ended up shelling out quite a bit for drinks of varying quality and high price. Drinks like a vodka sprite went from totally weak to a standard pour, singles randomly turned into doubles, and requests for tap water were refused. They would only provide us water if we paid for bottled water - which I think is illegal? Anyways, the karaoke itself was pretty fun. There are computers in the back to look up songs, and you submit a piece of paper with the singer's name and song request. Most of the tables reserved for large parties end up going unused throughout the night, so they'll eventually let you move closer to the stage. Celebrated my birthday here last week and I had a blast! I reserved a room for a party of 30 people, the room was spacious and everyone moved around comfortably. We even used the middle of the room as a dance floor! Our waitress Vanessa was amazing as soon as someone entered the room she was aware and offered to take their drink order right away. She was in and out of the room frequently and was always there when we needed her. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because their song selection is not really up to date. So I was thinking about doing a karaoke night out with a whole bunch of friends and the first place I thought of was Spotlight Karaoke; the best place to go, right? And then, BAM! My friend who lives in the downtown area told me that Spotlight just opened up a second location in midtown. Awesome! So I give them a call to try and reserve a private room for up to 20 people, but bummer! They were all booked up! But the dude I was talking to, Charlie, told me that he might have a cancellation and that he would call me back. Less than 15 minutes later, he called back and told me that he would me a bigger room (up to 40 people) for the same minimum tab as the smallest room. Awesome, right? So I started inviting more people, but even then, I didn't think I was going to be able to fill up the room. But anyway, the fact that Charlie called me back so quickly and to offer me that room was just great! Anyway, the night of the reservation came, I showed up around 9:00 pm just to make sure that when people started showing up, I'd already be there. There's plenty of street parking around then, but my friends that showed up later (10:00 and up) told me that parking was kind of a pain in the butt, so show up early for easy parking, mmkay? The private room that I got (room #3) was HUGE. there's a stage up front and center and the song machine is right next to the stage. All the song selections are done on the screen with touch feature. Very simple to use and lots of selections! Our waitress was pretty awesome even though as the night rolls along and more and more people came (I was able to fill up the room with 40 or so people after all), she seemed a little overwhelmed and was a little slower than at the beginning of the night, but she still got everybody taken care of and I thought she did a really great job! Pay yourself in the back, Mona! I think my only complaints about the place are the drink and the fact that they don't serve food. I Really loved Spotlight, and thought no other Karaoke Spot could compare. As it turns out I was right. I have been to spotlight on several occasions and always had a blast. When they implemented the new reservation policy it slowed down my desire and ability to go. However, 2 weeks ago I went ahead and jumped through the hoops that were needed to reserve a table initially for 11, after speaking to the owner via text message I was able to increase that by 6, so 17 was supposed to be my total head count. As I was the organizer I arrived 1st around 8:45. I showed up to find I did not have a table. So they decided to put my party at the bar. I specifically asked if my entire party would be able to fit at the bar I was assured that they would be. Well, when my people started arriving there were only 9 seats at the bar. So when I had to ask for seats multiple times, I was given alot of attitude and finally the "bar manager" comes over and ignorantly states "You're not getting anymore seats, period". I asked: what would make you think that we came in and paid 2 weeks ago to stand? After much rudeness and even yelling it was decided that they would give us our money back but didn't want to give us the money back for drinks we didn't even touch but paid for. The worst part of the night was that my friend wanted to propose to his lady and they ruined it with unprofessional behavior and messy reservations! Ultimately, as stated in the beginning no other Karaoke spot can compare to their UN professionalism and arrogance. If you want to have a genuine good time drama and ignorance free go across the street to Glitter! Much better environment! Clearly, it's a reason Spotlight only has 3 stars. It's unfortunate to everyone around me that I'm so bad at it for now, but I'm wickedly committed to fighting the fear and trying it everywhere I go! Our lovely friend we were visiting in Houston reserved a table for us on a Saturday night. It seated about 10-15 comfortably and it was a great home-base for the night! Servers were friendly and drinks always came out quickly. We got here at about 9pm and had the place practically to ourselves before it in an instant became totally packed around 10pm. Perfect hour for giggles and 'sound-checks'! The karaoke song list is without a doubt the LARGEST LIST EVER. Make sure you look through the songs on their website before coming or it would be easy to get lost in the list. SUPER SHADY. If you want to go to a dirty dive bar and overpay for under-poured drinks, then by all means, stop by. Take my advice and don't start a tab because they will run your bill up (even beyond their WAY overpriced drinks) and then refuse to give you an itemized receipt. I came here with a few friends the other night. I started a tab and a few of my other friends were paying cash (smart!). After comparing prices with what they were paying to my total tab, I realized they had snuck and extra $30 (at least) into my total! $95 tab for 8 drinks (half of which were beer)??? Ummm, I think not. When I ask for an itemized receipt, they gave me the bartender's hand-written checklist of what I'd ordered, which was correct but didn't show the prices. When I asked to see a printed itemized receipt w/ prices, they refused. Tell me that's not shady. Hope they come up with a better story when they hear from Amex. I came here for my bday. I did not know about the $10 cover. Its a karaoke bar... also you probably have to make a reservation to get a table. I luckily sat in one that just had the waitress name as a reservation. (I guess they were trying to look like they had business arriving) If youre a regular you're gonna get a lot of perks when it comes to singing. Been here only on weekdays. Good KJ and bartender service. Easy stage access. KJ is to opposite wall of the stage. Sound system good.
