KATY, TX / KOREAN-CHINESE / 06-29-24 / DINNER, Party of 5 +They make their noodles in-house. +The jjajangmyeon sauce wasn't salty or full of MSG. +The gangpoong shrimp was pretty good, but the shrimp was small for $22.95 +Customer service was decent. -The Sweet and Sour Pork was very greasy, like fried once and refried much later. Needs to use better quality oil. -The noodle portions were small. Would like to see the tangsooyuk improve, as well as the portions. Will revisit in 6 months or more to reevaluate progress of this Korean-Chinese restaurant offering.

Bibimbap

This place is really cute and the food is good. The bibimbap rice was so crispy, but on the sweet side. The soft tofu was probably the silkiest I've ever had. The service was good. I can't wait to go back for karaoke.

I really love walking to a big space that has both karaoke and dining area with bar. I wanted to try the first time Jajangmyeon noodles and this was close thankfully. The staff is friendly and courteous, the time it took to receive my food was prompt and not too slow/quick. I really like the ambiance as I relaxed and ate my noodles and dumplings- thank you for the amazing service and food- 10/10

We came across Hongdae Pocha while dining next door couple weeks ago and wanted to really try them. We actually wanted to try the karaoke rooms since the karaoke place soju in Asia town is always busy and booked. Hongdae is a good 20-25 mins drive from us and it was worth the drive! Firstly, I love their interiors! Awesome job on that street look design! I love how it was easy to communicate with the lady who helped us with our order. She had a vast knowledge of food and choices. She was an amazing host and made our experience the best so far here in Houston! The food, we started with soju and we got seafood bibimbap, sizzling steak and seafood soondubu. We wanted to try the pitcher or the jar lol but it was huge so we just got 3 beers. In terms of preparing time yes they took good amount of time and we were hungry but I didn't mind waiting cuz I want to make sure food is fresh and warm and they were absolutely great! We are very picky about our Asian cuisine and how they prepare especially the seafood. Hongdae pocha did not disappoint! The seafood was fresh and nicely done! The food was hot and so tasty that we actually ate it all without wasting it! If you are in Houston and you like Asian cuisine you must try them and if you love singing than heck yeah! The rooms are pretty reasonable! Last but not the least the prices are an average! The best quality of food with the best price in the market!! Will see you soon! Thank you again for the best experience!

Was craving Korean food and decided to check out Hongdae Pocha. Got seated in our own dining area/booth. Really like how they decorated inside. Love that I see IU soju posters everywhere haha. Staff was very friendly. Service was quick. Sides include yellow radish and onions with concentrated jajang sauce. Wished kimchi was a side offered here. Ordered 3 dishes. Ganjjajang (black bean noodles with sauce made fresh/same day) was savory; really enjoyed it. Brisket jjamppong was super delicious! Most Korean restaurants usually serve jjamppong with seafood but Hongdae Pocha is one of the few places that have a brisket option. Finally, the sweet & sour pork (tangsuyuk) was also very tasty. I liked how the sauce is left on the side, so the pork stays crispy for a while. Really liked the food & experience; been back for round 2 in less than 2 months :) This place needs more love; definitely a restaurant I'll revisit often!

Hongdae Pocha is a hidden gem that I highly recommend for some great Korean food! My friends and I came on a weekday evening after a late night of working out. The place was empty when we arrived. The restaurant is decorated very nicely with lots of eccentric art and it's quite spacious! This is a great place to host late night dinners for large groups. I'll talk about the side dishes first... yummy! Usually kimchi at most pochas in Houston are overly fermented and very sour, but Hongdae's is spicy, savory, and slightly sweet... just how I like it. Loved the bean sprouts as well. The yukgaejang was spicy and comforting. The beef was tender and the soup was very flavorful. The rose tteokbokki was also incredible. The sauce was creamy, rich, and slightly spicy. There was a generous amount of seafood (scallops, mussels, shrimps) and they did not skimp out on rice cakes either which I highly appreciate. The bulgogi udon was great as well. It was sweet, savory, and very cheesy. The bulgogi was tender as well. Unfortunately we did not drink this time around so I can't say anything regarding their alcohol... but their food alone is good enough reason to come and support! Definitely consider coming here for late night drinks and food after hanging out at Katy Asian Town!

jajangmyeon

It was our first time enjoying a delicious meal here. My niece and I were looking for a place to have jajangmyeon, and this restaurant popped up as one of the top-rated spots nearby. It definitely did not disappoint! The noodles, mandu, and soup were amazing, along with the delicious panchan. Highly recommended if you're craving Korean cuisine! Great service as well, they have a button where you can call for service anytime.

Yummy.

Love the layout of the place. Open concept with a modern korean hip vibe. Makgeolli is on point.

It's nice to have another pocha (Korean bar? Pub) in the Katy area! Everything in Katy closes early, so Hongdae Pocha is a good place to hangout with friends until late at night. Pros: -The place is clean. No sticky floors or tables! - the interior is nice & extremely spacious - the food is solid & varied - extensive soju + other alcohol menu - there are different seating options (private booths, smaller tables, longer tables for large groups) - private karaoke rooms - several tvs play various things from kpop mvs to sports - the owners are super friendly! They stopped by our table several times to ask how things were or to see if we needed anything Cons: - the lights were a bit brighter than preferable for a pub - there's an open area for karaoke. This may be a pro to some, but to us it was pretty distracting. I believe anyone in the dining area (not in a private karaoke room) can sing from their seat, which got very loud when we were visiting. Thankfully, the owner was obliging when we asked her to turn down the volume. I would prefer it would be better to open the stage every 30 mins or so or to let big parties make reservations for special events rather than having it available/open all the time, as it was too loud to have a conversation. Overall, this would be a great place to grab food, to enjoy karaoke, or do both! There weren't too many patrons, maybe because it's newly open, but I anticipate this business growing once they establish themselves :)

Love this place -- they are locally owned and we always visit their sister location So Gong Dong! The service is always great and this is a perfect place for large groups. They have karaoke rooms if you want a more intimate experience and they have a large stage in the center for karaoke in front of a crowd which is my fave! They have a lot of typical Korean street food from rice to soup to teeokbokki. They have craft cocktails, Soju, maekgolli, and beyond. We love coming to this spot to just unwind and hangout for a chill night. 10/10 recommend

Tasty dishes and awesome vibe! This spot transports you to the lively streets of an Asian night market. Service is friendly and fast! Can't wait to come back at night and couple dinner with some Soju and karaoke!

Kinda cool if youre into older crowds singing karaoke while eating /drinking. they got private rooms tho if you want privacy. food is okay but portions arent great for price. atmosphere is decent. very minimslist. tbh, feels like a larger sized One Shot Pocha (off longpoint in Houston) but worse priced. If Soho7th and One Shot Pocha had a baby that didnt graduate college, this would Hongdae Pochae

Same curved counter, same stainless, same red shirts - and the same man in the cap and beard shucking my oysters, one perfect shell at a time. This place isn't fancy. It's Texas honest. A grounded ship ringed in sun-bleached shells, loud with beer, laughter, and knives hitting the hinge. Folks pack in - oil hands, students, suits - because here, money doesn't decide taste. If you want the Gulf, you come. The oysters are what the Gulf does better than anyone will admit: big, briny, and unapologetic. Pacific and Australian oysters are refined - polite, even. Ours carry warm salt, mineral depth, and a little river memory. They don't whisper; they speak Texas. Menu says a dozen; you get thirteen. That's not a promotion. That's culture. The Michelada? Many places pour a decent one. I won't judge. But drop a fat Gulf oyster in the glass and the drink wears its crown - the way Houstonians know it should. Fried catfish here sets a bar most won't clear: cornmeal crisp, clean-sweet flesh, no mud, no funk. In this part of the country--Texas and our neighbors in Arkansas - we don't just eat catfish; we raise it right and fry it right. That's geography, craft, and pride. Frog legs snap at the joint and stay tender at heart - quiet Southern luxury. Gumbo is Texas gumbo - thicker, smokier, steady. Not Cajun, not Creole; ours. Skip it and your body will notice. Nineteen years ago I had my first Michelada here. Nineteen years later, it's still the best - and that same shucker in the cap is still running the line like time never learned his name. This isn't nostalgia. It's continuity. This isn't "seafood night." It's Houston - served raw, hot, and true. And for anyone wondering, yes - whoever you are, if you want the real thing, you'll end up here. - Dr. C Born elsewhere. Refined by Texas salt & smoke.

Getting to the location was quite easy, parking was super easy as well, it is in a small shopping center. As I went inside, I could smell the food, and I knew it was going to be good. I was greeted by a younger guy who handed me the menu, but fortunately, I already knew what I wanted! Which was one of everything! But, I was solo on this day, so I had to have some restraint! I chose to go with the catfish basket, with 2 filets, fries (cajun), a side of mac and cheese, and a side of their specialty sauce that comes with crawfish! I had an appointment I was going to next, and I didn't think about how long it would take, but fortunately, it didn't take long at all. They drop the food to cook after you order, which I love!!! The catfish and fries were piping hot when they came out. Seasoned just perfectly for my taste! I'm glad I went with the two, so that I could take the other one home for later!!! I don't know how they season the fish, but keep doing what you're doing! I got the mac and cheese, it looked super good. It was cheesy and had the cheese pull that we all know and love. It wasn't my most favorite dish, it was missing a little something. BUT!!! When I added the side sauce with the crawfish in it, it became my favorite! Something about that combo just works! I believe it's the sauce they use in one of their pastas, but don't quote me on that! The sauce I used as a dip for everything, fries, mac and catfish. It is worth getting! All in all, loved everything about this place. It reminds me a little of some of the places I used to go to growing up in Memphis. Family vibe, packing lots of flavors, good music going, and just good everything. Will be back to try more of the menu!

I didn't recall anything bad about the place, and given the rave reviews since then, I thought it was time to return. Based on reviews, we showed up early on a Friday evening (~5 pm). Even at that time, it was mostly full, but we were able to snag seats at the bar, which is first come first serve. We ordered the "regular" grilled oysters (5/5), which were anything but regular, as they were topped with peanuts and a really great flavor. I'd get these again. Fair warning, these take 20 minutes to come out, which I didn't mind, but I did not realize that they would not bring us anything else until after the oysters since these are considered an app. I thought they'd just bring things out as they were ready. This meant, we did not get our crawfish until we were already sitting there for an hour. About halfway into the wait for the crawfish (after the oysters), the fried rice (1/5) showed up, and I have to say, it was underwhelming. It came out room temperature, which to me is cold, and I thought this was just how they do it. Except 15 minutes later, the seats next to us got their fried rice, and it came out piping hot. You could still see the steam coming off of it. Besides being cold, I didn't think the fried rice was that good in terms of flavor. I also generally prefer the short grain rice, and this was more of a long grain. Once the crawfish showed up, we were well past an hour, so we dove right into it. Both the garlic butter and combo mix were great flavor - some of the best I've had in Houston. However.... it made me remember why we did not return. About 20% of the crawfish were TINY. And by tiny, I mean they were smaller than my pinky finger. Maybe I'm a crawfish snob, but at this time of the season, there should not be that many tiny crawfish. Maybe a few small ones, but not tiny. Crawfish flavor = 5+/5, crawfish quality = 2/5, crawfish cook = 3/5. Then I made the mistake of ordering a cluster of snow crab. That took another 30+ min to come out, and it was again room temperature. The service at the bar was fine (4/5), but the kitchen service (1/5) is not something I want to experience again, especially not for the crawfish quality/size. Yes, the flavor was amazing, but I'm not fighting for a table for lukewarm food and 30 min wait time for each dish. The pricing was some of the lowest I've seen ($8.99/lb crawfish), but I'd rather pay $1 more at other places for the quality.
