Absolutely recommend this spot! Nicky served us and gave amazing recommendations. The midnight chocolate reminded me of my childhood neighborhood ice cream shop. It was such a nostalgic experience. The shop is small and great spot for kids too! I'll definitely come back! Theres a famous mochi kitchen close by, but I say just skip that and try Nicoco. Way better options and so much tastier than the other place. This should be the best ice cream shop in Hilo!!!

Nicoco dairy-free coconut ice cream is dreamy and their pints can also be found in some stores now. I remember when ice cream spots would be forward thinking when they had just one coconut flavor non-dairy ice cream option on their menu. Now look at Nicoco! It was like this place was made for me with all the flavors. The store has a real downtown Hilo vibe and I love visiting in person.

The best ice cream joint in all of the Big Island. The sorbet ice cream is certified vegan and organic, and for those with lactose intolerance like me, it is a must-try because it is made from coconut milk. There are two locations in Hilo, and we were able to visit both. Still, we had to write a review for this location because the Staff and the customers we met here were really excellent, as they engaged us in conversations and inquired about our experience with the products. One customer even shared their experiences of the locations and pictures of their escapades on the Island. Many other reviewers called the products here "Gelato," however it is actually "sorbet" as Gelatos are not Vegan and are made with egg yolk. It is tough to find parking if the downtown area is busy, but there is a parking lot next to the store, and it is free; just make sure you get there early as street parking is very minimal.

Wow!!! This vegan ice cream is AMAZING!! I had the two favorites: sea salt chocolate and fluffer nutter. The fluffer nutter was out of this world like marshmallow ice cream with sweet pieces of peanut butter. To die for!! There is street parking in front of the shop, so it's easy. The service was great. The young lady that was working there was super sweet and attentive. I wished I lived in Hilo...I'd be so fat eating this every single day lol :) Yeah it's that good.

This place is a hidden gem. Didn't realize it's all vegan and organic until m done with my order, coz the gelato just tastes so good. Then I found out later that the ice cream here is all coconut milk based, that's why the flavor is so rich. The durian flavor is so good. The black sesame one has some kumquat in it which surprisingly goes so well with the richness of black sesame. Highly recommend to everyone read more

The reason for this score is that they have the nerve to charge $5.00 for "Two scoops" of ice cream. Now I have no problem paying for that IF that's what they were giving me. They gave me the equivalent of barely 1 scoop. Maybe she thought I was a tourist I really don't know but it was pathetic. At first I thought they ran out of the flavor, but no that was the serving. I WILL NEVER GO HERE AGAIN. they have too many other great places around read more

My first time having vegan gelato and I would recommend. I had the vanilla and mint gelato. They use a coconut base so that added a "nutty" flavor to them, especially in the vanilla, which was a great touch. Do not expect the gelato to be as creamy as a dairy based gelato, but the texture was still smooth. The staff was very friendly as well. read more

This place has one of the most creamiest vegan ice cream/gelato I every had. They also offer many interesting flavors, some with super fruits, and fresh made waffle cones. I have visited this place a few times now and tested quite a few flavors. My favorite so far is chocolate sea salt. It has rich creamy texture and the sweetness is balanced with sea salt. read more

We stopped by for the first time today after picking up Thai food from Ratana's and a cinnamon roll from Papa'a Palaoa Bakery. I was blown away by their creative flavors. Lavender white chocolate, Juniper mint, Rose pistachio, creamy coconut... everything looked delicious. We tried the lavender and rose flavors and it was such a great after-lunch treat. The interior is really fun and transports you to a pastel rainbow world with the pretty lighting and cloud decor inside. I'll be back next time I crave gelato in Hilo! read more

The coconut and Kona coffee gelato were creamy and delicious. Perfect on a hot and humid Hilo day. I loved the fresh made-to-order cone. Friendly service. Small shop with an outdoor bench for a few to sit. Wish there was indoor seating with AC to avoid the heat and sun. Otherwise, this little shop is such a treat for Downtown Hilo. read more

I am sorry to say I did not get to properly try the gelato because the unconscious young woman behind the counter gave me a sample with a dirty spoon, and I was so disgusted. But what was more shocking was not only did she give me a sample with a dirty spoon, she gave me the wrong kind so she was unconscious and was not paying attention so she exposed me to somebody else's mouth and didn't care about allergies. I'm disgusted. I want to report it to the health department. They don't even label clean and dirty spoon containers so she didn't know which couple is dirty and clean. I couldn't tell because they weren't labeled I only discovered it when I tried to put the dirty spoon in the holder that she did not take the sample spoon from, and she said "oh no, those are the clean spoons" and I said that means you gave me a sample with a Dirty spoon and she was just like "oh" like she didn't even care. I I told her that isn't coffee that's cardamom and she goes "I don't know they all look the same I'm new". What kind of training do you give your workers? Are they all stone or something? I'm so disgusted and sad. read more

When I first saw this adorable shop I just had to go in! The service was incredible, the ice cream was exquisite and everything was vegan, gluten free and organic! The owner was kind and genuinely happy to be there! Definitely my favorite ice cream place by far! I highly recommend! There were many unique and delicious flavors! So good, just incredible! I'm not a vegan, but I really enjoy this vegan gelato place. You have to like coconut; since that's their base instead of dairy, everything tastes like it. That being said, their chocolate gelato--especially the "Trifecta" flavor--is as rich and delicious as chocolate gelato gets. Delicious! read more

This gelato shop was amazing. Best gluten free cone I've have EVER had, and I saw it being made right in front of my eyes. Special flavors I'd never even thought of being incorporated into a gelato, and all vegan, gluten free, and organic! Talk about accommodating to different dietary preferences and everyone's tastebuds. The service was fantastic - we even got the chance to chat with the owner of the chain who was working that day. A great person who was nothing but kind and welcoming. From the pastel colors that paint the walls and the beautiful neon board assuring that everything is (you guessed it) gluten free, organic, and vegan, to the wonderful staff, I recommend this shop 110%! OMG cannot say enough about this little shop! I have a dairy allergy and am always searching for good vegan ice cream and Nicoco knocked it out of the park. I had a vanilla gelato with mango chunks (forget the name) and it was delicious. The cones were homemade and so yum! I chose this spot over the açaí place down the road and so glad I did. 5 stars! read more

The most amazing gelato/ice cream/dessert ever. We stopped here on a whim and I'm so glad we did! I got the rose and whipped cream flavors, and my fiancé got the cereal flavor. We both wished the location was closer to where we were staying so we could go again but we did track down a place that carried their gelato and went again a second time! This time we got mint chip which was amazing as well. Usually we have no problem sharing, but we were fighting over this amazing gelato!! So good!! read more

This was the most delicious ice cream or gelato I have ever had in my life. It was the creamiest and most flavorful I could have asked for in my dessert-laden dreams. I've spent a week exploring the island, and this gelato shop is what I will miss the most. The customer service was also very friendly. The next time I visit Hawaii, this will be my very first stop. Hubs has a sweet tooth, and I like the sweet mochi myself. The line to place my order was completely empty! All the folks standing around were waiting for their orders. I stepped in the tiny storefront and placed my custom order and then grabbed a tray of buttermochi that was ready to go. After paying, I asked how long was the wait time and the cashier said 20-30 minutes. Instead of standing around, I went back to the car and hung out with BIL and watched for the people who were before me to get their orders and leave. I waited outside for about 5 minutes before they called my name and my mochi order was ready to go. There were some tourists who came by who didn't want to wait for 30 minutes and were ready to turn around and leave, but I told them there were ready made packages that they could grab and go, the rest of us were waiting on custom orders. They were really happy to hear that and they bought their mochi and headed out. I will definitely call ahead next time I go to Hilo, the wait is small kine humbug, but the mochi is oh so ono! (translated: the wait is an inconvenience, but the mochi is very delicious).

As a disclaimer, I'm not the biggest fan of shaved ice because of how sweet the dessert tends to be, and because more often than not, there are a bunch of artificial colors used in the fruit juices. When we looked at the menu, I was impressed and excited to see the emphasis on quality of their ingredients: no artificial flavors or colors, no aspartame, no high fructose corn syrup, and no preservatives. I was sold. Although we were tempted to create our own shaved ice, we ultimately went with "The Local", a soursop and liliko'i combo topped with haupia cream. Between the two flavors, I enjoyed the sour sop side a bit more since it was the one that was less sweet. The cream on top was absolutely delicious, and reminded me of the light and airy frothed milk cream you find on many boba drinks these days. There's a generous amount ladled on top, ensuring you can have some in every bite without having to carefully ration out the cream. Overall, I'm a fan of Kula Shave Ice. Definitely a great dessert to enjoy on a hot day. Worth checking out if you're ever in Hilo.

When I get to the register, after they had already filled her cone, I was told the price was $8.50 for the child's size ice cream and charged an additional $3 for their "specialty cone". Prior to choosing the cone, I was not told anything about it costing $3 additional dollars. Nor that a kids size scoop for that cone would be $8.50 when it should usually be $4.99. So I paid $11.50 for a child's ice cream. When I brought my concern up to the 3 teenagers working there, they all made me feel as though I was in the wrong for not knowing my child's cone would be $11.50. One of the staff checked to see if there was a price on the front of the sample cone thinking she could rub that in my face but there was no price shared. So, I had literally no way of knowing how much I would end up paying until it was too late and no apology or kindness was shown whatsoever. Another staff member said "we aren't in charge of what they give us"... and to that I say, that doesn't absolve you from sharing the price of this speciality option -which again, was the only cone option offered. Had I known I would be paying $11.50 for a child's cone, we would have happily ordered the $4.99 cup. I'd appreciate if the manager would get in touch with me -not so much for the outrageous cost but more for the fact that their staff provided such poor service in not sharing the price, and not trying to kindly resolve the issue.

If not, venture on over to the visitor center. There's free parking and clean bathrooms, plus if you have children you could kill a couple of hours in the outside self guided tour. They also sell some simple lunches and ice cream with an outdoor seating area where you can watch an informational video. There's an employee giving out free samples of multiple types of the Mac nuts. I did learn that the Hawaiian Host brand is their sister company.

After paying, I asked how long was the wait time and the cashier said 20-30 minutes. Instead of standing around, I went back to the car and hung out with BIL and watched for the people who were before me to get their orders and leave. I waited outside for about 5 minutes before they called my name and my mochi order was ready to go. There were some tourists who came by who didn't want to wait for 30 minutes and were ready to turn around and leave, but I told them there were ready made packages that they could grab and go, the rest of us were waiting on custom orders. They were really happy to hear that and they bought their mochi and headed out. I will definitely call ahead next time I go to Hilo, the wait is small kine humbug, but the mochi is oh so ono! (translated: the wait is an inconvenience, but the mochi is very delicious).

We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.

DO NOT COME HERE if you're ASIAN. The young lady working at the front on Tuesday around 4 PM was extremely rude. When my husband and I walked in, there was a group tasting samples on the left, and a girl waiting for her ice cream on the right. I stood at the counter to look at the flavors while waiting. The staff member was "clearly busy", but several minutes went by and she never once greeted us or even acknowledged our presence. After she finally finished rolling the ice cream and checking out the girl on the right, I said hi -- but instead of looking at me, she immediately turned to the group on the left with a big smile and started chatting with them, as if my husband and I, the only two Asians in the shop -- were invisible. I don't care how the ice cream tastes, but Hicoco Hawaiian Gelato seriously needs to improve its staff training. No matter someone's race or gender, everyone deserves the same level of service. Too bad. I usually leave a tip for takeout, but not only did she lose that tip, I'll also be warning other Asians visiting Hilo to stay away from this place. read more
