    Inside the Kealakekua location

When we visit the Big Island of Hawaii one of the treats we look forward to is to stop at least once (last trip was twice) at Gypsea Gelato. Their shop along Mamalahoa Hwy is a perfect stop after snorkeling in Kealakekua or Honolulu Bay (or visiting the Place of Refuge). They have a great selection of Gelato flavors, freshly made. They also have some hand made pastries at this location. There's a decent sized dining room if it's raining, but we enjoy eating our Gelato out back while viewing the beautiful flowers. We've also visited their other location in the Coconut Grove Marketplace in Kailua-Kona town. A great, refreshing treat that we look forward to each trip to Hawaii.

The art was absolutely to die for!! I got the coffee gelato and it was so creamy and delicious. The vibe is everything and the area was extremely walkable. There's parking right out front as well.

Tom kha and chocolate orange gelato

Beautiful, delicious gelato. We all had two flavors in our cups, so 10 flavors. And I LOVED them. I ordered the Tom Kha and chocolate orange...two striking flavors with a wild balance. The spicy, gingery bright tom kha was so lovely, and the chocolate orange is so creamy and smooth. My only bummer about this place is that the toasted coconut was not available...so I guess I'll have to come back. Great service, beautiful shop.

The husband and I stopped here on a whim after a morning snorkel adventure at 2-Step Beach. The gelato was incredible! Light and creamy without being heavy. The passionfruit flavor was bright without being too tart or sour and the Just Dark Chocolate was just as good! Totally should have added bits of the waffle cone to mine but I didn't think about it until after I was eating it lol

Friendly service here and spacious seating along with some outdoor seating in front and in back at times After a couple teaspoons, I went with a mix of vanilla and Lily Koi (passionfruit) while my wife had the Tom Kha gelato. The ladder has really good flavor that she really liked. It's not just for soup anymore :-) The vanilla flavor is really good here and so is the passionfruit Really glad to have made this discovery. On our way back from the house of refuge.

Amazing Gelato, coconut haystack was absolutely delicious, so was Makua Trail. They let you sample and add flavors even to a mini! They also have dairy free, my son got banana sorbet and Oreo, yummy! And get this there's a dog from up the hill who wanders in and they give him a little sample

Solid gelato! Cute little spot right off the side of the road. Pistachio - excellent pistachio flavor with pistachio flecks. 5 stars! Dark chocolate - nice creamy dark chocolate. 5 stars. Tahitian vanilla - strong vanilla, exactly what you want in a vanilla. 5 stars. Mauka trail - best value with lots of big Mac nuts, tasty coffee flavor and chocolate pieces. 5 stars! Vegan chocolate - only non dairy flavor offered and was pretty disappointing - kinda icy and a little chalky. 2 stars. Maybe their other shops offer other non dairy flavors. The outside play area was perfect for the kiddo. Definitely recommended for a sweet spot for the fam.

Description is spot on. Charming dessert shop with a play area for the kids inside and outside. Recommend to stop by for a dessert and chill. Credit card only.

Such a cute little pit stop for refreshingly delicious gelato! I'm glad I saw the sign and made a stop! The inside is spacious friendly space with wooden furnitures and display of gorgeous gelato and baked goods. There are a lot of sizes... I got a large but they're super generous with serving. I had salted caramel and Kona coffee with extra caramel sauce My daughter had strawberry lilikoi and lilikoi passion fruit. They were all so, so good!!

    Do you have Dole Whip?

    Is this place vegan friendly?

Hello, and thanks for your question. Gypsea Gelato IS vegan friendly! We always have at least two sorbets in the display case. There are always pre-packaged pints in the freezer, too. We use an almond milk base for those. Aloha!

Their customer service reply really made up for the previous experience with their staff and they ensured me they would address the issue with their team. :) Old review: I visited the Gypsea Gelato in Kona today and was extremely disappointed with the service. I ordered a single scoop child's cone and was told "We only have our Ube waffle cones, we are out of the rest... but don't worry they don't really taste like ube". I said ok, that should be fine since my daughter wants a cone. When I get to the register, after they had already filled her cone, I was told the price was $8.50 for the child's size ice cream and charged an additional $3 for their "specialty cone". Prior to choosing the cone, I was not told anything about it costing $3 additional dollars. Nor that a kids size scoop for that cone would be $8.50 when it should usually be $4.99. So I paid $11.50 for a child's ice cream. When I brought my concern up to the 3 teenagers working there, they all made me feel as though I was in the wrong for not knowing my child's cone would be $11.50. One of the staff checked to see if there was a price on the front of the sample cone thinking she could rub that in my face but there was no price shared. So, I had literally no way of knowing how much I would end up paying until it was too late and no apology or kindness was shown whatsoever. Another staff member said "we aren't in charge of what they give us"... and to that I say, that doesn't absolve you from sharing the price of this speciality option -which again, was the only cone option offered. Had I known I would be paying $11.50 for a child's cone, we would have happily ordered the $4.99 cup. I'd appreciate if the manager would get in touch with me -not so much for the outrageous cost but more for the fact that their staff provided such poor service in not sharing the price, and not trying to kindly resolve the issue.

That being said, I didn't realize until I got to Courtyard King Kamehameha (where I was staying) that it was actually inside the hotel. It's open to the public, but if you're staying there like my husband and I were, it's super convenient. We ended up going almost every day during our stay. One shave ice was usually enough for us to share, especially after adding ice cream and/or snow cap. A combo we particularly liked was guava, lilikoi, and blue Hawaii with snow cap and macadamia nut ice cream. (We would've liked to add mochi too, but they ran out.) It's a small place, but when it wasn't too busy and it was too hot to sit outside, we enjoyed sitting at the bar stools facing-ish the pool area. There was lots of natural light coming in through the big windows, which made it a nice place to sit for a spell. The staff were friendly and especially patient when it got busy or loud. I imagine they're used to hotel guests and families coming through at all times of day. tl;dr: this Ululani is a solid choice for shave ice and a in super convenient location, especially if you're staying at the hotel.

My husband ordered the loco moco with coffee, and I ordered the macadamia nut pancakes with POG juice. In hindsight, we probably should've ordered just one dish to share. Portions here are very large, and lately we've learned that ordering less is smarter for us, both to avoid wasting food and money. I completely forgot about that in the moment. The pancakes came as two large pancakes, and I wasn't able to finish them. I kept them simple, no extra toppings. They came with butter and syrup on the table. The pancakes themselves were fine, but a bit dry. They relied a lot on the butter, and I personally didn't love it because it was salted butter, while I prefer regular unsalted butter. Nothing bad, just not something I'd crave again. My husband's loco moco was actually enjoyable overall, but we didn't like the chicken katsu substitution. It was completely soaked in gravy, which made it lose all crunch. If you order loco moco here, I'd recommend sticking with the classic beef patty instead of substituting, since anything breaded will likely lose its texture in the sauce. In the end, we weren't upset, but we also weren't especially impressed. The food was solid, portions were generous, and it felt like a reliable, filling breakfast spot, just not a standout one.
