Unbelievable high menu pricing and mandatory 25% tips! Friendly servers - but menu prices already 30% above their competition with comparable food quality. Base price for a tofu dish is $20. Then, on top of it, we had a table of 15 - they added a 25% tip!!! So with tax - I paid nearly $30 for tofu. Are you kidding me? I saw no mention on the menu of a manadtory 25% tip. Then - with 25% service charge - one would expect top notch service and care, right? Our food came out luke warm; we had to keep asking for water refills. Nobody stopped by during our meal. I suppose if you know you are getting 25% tip - why put in any effort? Management is clearly gouging on all fronts and customers end up paying. Let see how long they can keep up this gouging and hide the 25% service charge! Needless to say - they are off all of our recommended restaurant lists. read more

I ordered pad Thai with tofu. Pretty standard. We waited a long time, and when it came out, I expected it should be fresh and piping hot, but the tofu was cold, chewy and overcooked, and tasteless. The noodles were room temperature and bland. I had ordered 3/5 spice, and it tasted like 0/5. Easily the worst pad Thai I've ever had....and I love pad Thai. Our waiter barely spoke above a whisper and was average in attending to us, yet a gratuity was already added so we couldn't adjust. Was rushed thru dinner and a $300 bill payment with curt wait staff and manager and yet at 6:20p we were asked by manager to vacate our table or move to bar because they needed the table for 10 people coming. Came here on a Monday evening with a couple of friends. Service was quick and friendly. We started off with the Vegetable 4 U appetizer and the pineapple margarita. Both the appetizer and the margarita were awesome. I loved getting a taste of a couple different vegetarian appetizers, all of which were delicious. Next, I ordered tofu with peanut sauce and steamed vegetables. It was good, but nothing special compared to other Thai restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. My friend ordered a curry dish that I cannot remember or find the name of, but that was the best entree. My other friend ordered the Noodle Sriracha, which was good. Overall, the food was good, but the prices are relatively high compared to other Thai restaurants. My bill ended up substantially higher than what I would pay at most of the other Thai restaurants I have been to for food that was not any different, and if anything the portion sizes were smaller than other places. Most entrees run from about $14-$16 compared to the $12-14 I am used to, which ends up making a pretty big difference. read more

Pretty good Thai food here! I got the Hung Ley Curry with chicken and it was delicious! I got the spice level 3 out of 5, which wasn't spicy at all. The curry was dense, so it was definitely better eaten as a dip, than as a sip. Their pineapple margarita was also good, compared to other places. For $8, it was pretty worth it. They have really nice outdoor seating in this location. It's a great spot to have lunch/dinner at their outside seating on a nice day. Their service was pretty good. The girl serving us was nice but rushed everything every time she came to us. Otherwise, every other server was very attentive and helpful, constantly refilling our water. My wife and I ordered takeout from here on a weekend night for dinner. They were running a special that would include crab ragoon if you purchased $35 or more (I love crab ragoon), so we made sure to hit that mark. I ordered the green curry and had the crab ragoon for my meal. The ragoon was decent although I thought it could have used some more cream cheese filling. The green curry however was excellent. It had a deep flavor, some strong heat, and the curry which kept the heat from being overpowering. It definitely exceeded my expectations and would consider getting that or trying the red curry in the future. The portion sizes were also fairly large and I was able to get two meals from mine. I've been to Nicky's downtown before and really loved their food. My favorite has been the fried spicy basil, and I'm really glad I chose to try their curry. read more

The first thing that strikes me about this place is the decor. It's like walking into a mini Thailand. I really like the decorations. The bar is set up in a separate room and is also really cool looking. The staff is very attentive and I was seated quickly. I ordered thai toast and another meal that I can't remember the name of. Both items were very good. I think you would be hard pressed to find better thai food in Pittsburgh. If you're in the mood for Thai food. You should definitely check this place out. I would like to make one suggestion to the owners. The cash register at the bar makes this crazy loud beep every time it prints a receipt. Location has really gone downhill in the past couple years. We've been going there since they opened up on the Northside, food is now not properly prepared, not to mention we discovered they automatically adds a 20% tip in addition to the 20% tip we left. Omg, this is the real deal. Went with my picky husband who only likes Mexican or Italian restaurants. It is like dining with a teenage boy. I made reservations for the outside after our adult daughter's coaxed him to go given he likes spice. I ordered an appetizer of vegetable 4 u which had egg rolls, spring rolls and samosas for him to try. So far so good, he was a dipping king. We brought our own wine, $10 corkage,which is awesome though the man child liked the looks of their speciality frou frou drinks. Disappointed with an experience at this restaurant today. I checked the website before I arrived and noticed that they close at 3 PM and then reopen at 5 PM. Dining alone today and looking for a late lunch, I arrived at 2:25 PM. There were several tables filled on the patio. I walked inside and was told that they stopped seating "at 2:30 or 2:35," but I could have takeout. I responded that I did not want takeout, due to all the plastic waste. They refused to seat me even though I acknowledged that they were closing at 3 PM - meaning I wouldn't linger. I can understand if they were four of us, but as a single? While this is a beautiful location, I haven't been so happy with food quality for a while. By biggest issue is their spice usage and gauging levels. It's so inconsistent every time I order. They need to use measured spices because their chefs can often be heavy handed at levels 3 and up. Sometimes too spicy/hot, others seems under spiced. I will say the pork I recently ordered was the best meat I've had there in awhile. Cut proper so it was tender, often meat is cut too thick and is tough. read more

It was my birthday this past week and my girlfriend decided to take me out for lunch to celebrate. She chose Nicky's Thai Restaurant because of my high affinity for Asian Cuisine. We've never been there before so we didn't quite know what to expect. It's in a prime location in terms of visibility and there's ample off street parking for convenience. Nicky's entire decor is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and the outdoor seating is equally as impressive. In the summertime, sitting by the waterfall enhances an unforgettable dining experience. After much contemplation, it was now time for us to order. The menu did not disappoint as it was replete with a wide variety of tantalizing items for us to choose from. We started with the Tiger Cry Beef for an appetizer. The grilled marinated beef was seasoned to perfection and the sticky rice and tangy spicy tiger cry sauce was a pleasant surprise. We then ordered the Chicken Noodle Soup and Grilled Chicken Peanut Salad. The chicken noodle soup was very flavorful and the house dressing with the peanut sauce took the salad up a few notches. The customer service was commendable. Our server (Paoula) was friendly, helpful and attentive. Paoula gave us a few great suggestions that came in handy. We were very satisfied with the choice we made which immediately became evident the way we constantly raved about the Curry Coconut Mango Chicken and the Pad Phet. We couldn't order any cocktails from the bar due to the bartender not starting until later the night. The wine menu was adequate. We reminded ourselves to arrive later during the next visit if we're looking to indulge in an evening cocktail. Our server convinced us to try the Sticky Rice Mango dessert and we were so ecstatic that she did. It was light but still had a unique taste and just enough sweetness to satisfy our sweet tooth. Having moved from Brooklyn, NY my husband and I were worried that we wouldn't be able to find a good Thai place for delivery but Nicky's exceeded our expectations and was better than our go-to Thai spot in Brooklyn. We order from them almost every single weekend and have yet to check out the actual restaurant and dine in. Noticed a 20% "service charge" - waiter told me it was his tip - about what I would tip so I was ok with that. However when he brought my credit slip to sign there was a line for tip. I've been to the downtown Nicky's Thai and this one is just as good. It's kinda in the middle of nowhere but the interior is very cozy. They also have plenty of parking. I got the Kao Soy with beef and it was satisfying. The only issue with this place is that it seems like their spice level is off. Half of our table got 5/5 spiciness and it just wasn't that spicy. My first visit to this location, though I'm a long-time fan of the Northside location. At first, I was greatly saddened to learn that some of the curries which used to be gluten-free now are not. Apparently, changing the recipes to make them vegan meant adding gluten. I have decided to be happy for the vegans. I had the veggie stir-fried rice, which was delicious and plentiful (lasted me 3 meals). We had a larger group and everyone got what they ordered in a good time frame and seemed to enjoy their food. Nicky's was also very accommodating to our celebration of my husband's birthday (I brought a cake). Most restaurants accommodate this, but our waiter made it seem extra special. One note about the service - coffee took a long time to appear and those who had ordered it had already finished their desserts. The interior of this location is far more spacious than the northside, with better decor. I look forward to checking out their outdoor seating when warm weather returns. My husband and I ordered takeout from here last week. I have been to the location downtown but never to this location and during these unfortunate times, we could not enjoy their restaurant space. I placed an order via grubhub on yelp and was able to choose what time I wanted to pick it up. The process was clear and smooth, even describing that they would send me a text with a rough estimate of the time of when it would be ready. They have a couple specials running right now - the one that suited us best was spend $35 and get 3 crab ragoon and 3 egg rolls for free. So, I ordered the Cashew Dinner with chicken with medium heat. My husband ordered the Green Curry with chicken with the hot option. To reach the limit, we ordered the fresh spring rolls as an (well, my) appetizer. We were on our way to the restaurant when I got the text about the food being ready within 20 minutes of when I wanted it to be which was fine. I wanted to be early/on time. When we arrived the parking lot was packed and there was a line of customers standing outside waiting to pick up their food. It appeared that they were only letting so many customers into the restaurant at a time. My husband went in and picked it up. Once we were home we unwrapped it all and began to dig in! The spring rolls were just ok but I am a texture person - the rice paper itself was super sticky almost gummy when chewing on it. I did like the filling combination and would have liked it a lot more if it wasn't for the rice paper. For my meal - it was absolutely delicious!! It was a huge portion (the rice portion for the both of us was quite large as well) and I was intending on saving half of it for lunch the next day - well that didn't happen! I ate it all in one sitting. The amount of chicken was perfect for the amount of vegetables in the dish and it was a great vegetable medley. The sauce was just sweet enough and though I choose medium heat, I felt it could have been a little hotter than what it was (at least I was expecting it to be hotter). But otherwise this was a winner of a meal. Though the prices of their dishes are a little bit more, they do give you a generous portion size and were very accommodating. We visited Nicky's to celebrate an evening. We are vegeterian and ordered food with specific instructions. Despite that the food ordered had very heavy fish sauce and smelled fishy. On asking the server she said it was perhaps the smell in kitchen and refused to take the food back and charged us. She said sorry several times but took no action. #worstserviceever read more

It's easy to drive by and not think anything of this Thai restaurant. But don't make that mistake. Both the indoor and outdoor seating is very welcoming. Don't expect to blow through either. This is a sit down, relax and enjoy your meal. If you want fast this is not the place for you. But if you want a nice experience with authentic Thai food you will be pleased. The staff is pleasant and the food is awesome. Try anything, it's all good. I particularly enjoy the green curry. On a scale of 1 to 5, 3 is spicy. 4 will make you sweat, but wash it down with their traditional ice tea. Don't scrimp on desert. The Mango with sticky rice and ice cream is refreshing. I just went there this last weekend on Saturday after a day of hiking and a few drinks at the Full Pint Brewery. I think this is going to be kind of a mixed review with a bit of it on the negative side. I have enjoyed Nicky's in the North Side in the past, but this evening was marked with weirdness. My woman kept saying that she thought that it smells bad there. We were right near the kitchen and I think there were a lot of different strong smells coming from over there. The vegetable dumplings were extremely soft in a bad way with no substance, or crunch. It honestly tasted like a fish patty was on the inside. My dish was tastey, but it was absolutely drenched in the sauce, which was everywhere. I like sauce, but I don't want my food drenched in it. The tofu in it was well done and so was the tofu in my lady's salad which was pretty good. The waiter was nothing but kind and helpful all the way through. The prices do seem a bit in excess for the quality, but you do get a lot of food. I can't say that I am blown away by the food and that is what kills it for me. I went to the North Hills location over the weekend and got takeout for lunch. Ordering at the hostess stand was quick and easy and the service was great. The crab rangoons were also very good! I would say that my biggest concern is that I feel the quality of the food has gone down a bit, and I feel like I was overcharged for some things. I ordered Massaman curry with shrimp and wanted to add mixed vegetables and pineapple - the mixed veg was an extra $5 and the pineapple, $3. Eight dollars for those two add-ins seems very expensive to me. Also, there were only about 6 pieces of shrimp total, and one of them was not deveined so I didn't eat it. With a tip, I ended up paying about $40 for Massaman curry and crab rangoons lunch takeout. I'd had really good experiences in the past and I do hope to visit NTK again in the future. read more

I must say that I find the few reviews for Nicky's new location to be harsh, so I hope others that have had a good experience like me take to Yelp and post about it, although I think Nicky's is doing just fine by word of mouth with its business. I visited as a party of 5 at around 1pm on a Friday, and the dining room was filled with about 10-12 other parties besides us. The location is great, IMO, because the restaurant options in the immediate area are rather slim. My parents live a short drive from here, so we decided to go here for lunch after my parents enjoyed a previous lunch experience here. The building used to be Recipes Remembered, and then it was a potential Chinese restaurant that was never finished. The building had been vacant for a few years and then, one day, Nicky's opened pretty quickly. This was my first time at any of the (now) three locations in Pittsburgh. The patio is beautifully decorated and would be an ideal dining spot on any non-rainy day. The inside, where we sat, is ornately decorated with lots of gold, glittering tapestries, and colorful paintings. There is a room in the back paneled in wood with a bar and a TV. While there was a hostess, we were seated by a friendly woman who ended up being our server. A friendly young man brought us waters while we perused the menu. Our server was extremely helpful in assisting my mother with ordering since, due to her shellfish allergy, she cannot have anything with shellfish or products like oyster sauce, which is actually found in more dishes than you would think. She was also helpful when my dad asked for suggestions under the "chef's special" section, pointing out the spicier dishes. Soon after she took our orders, everything started to arrive. My mom and dad ordered Thai iced teas and really enjoyed them. All of the lunch meals are served with either salad or soup. The soup of the day on this visit was chicken rice. It was flavorful and spicy with plentiful amounts of rice and chicken. It came out hot which was perfect on this cooler day. The salad had a pineapple dressing with crushed peanuts and included tomatoes, cucumbers, mango, pineapple, carrots, and onions. I really enjoyed the sweet dressing and the added crunch/saltiness of the peanuts. For entrees our table ordered: 1. Wild curry with chicken- this was my meal and I loved it! I ordered a 4 (out of 5) and found it to have a very nice spice to it (cleared my sinuses!) but was not so spicy I ever felt uncomfortable. The dish included a variety of veggies: bamboo shoots, mushrooms, snap peas, red and green peppers, corn, eggplant, green beans, basil leaves, and many herbed spices that provided a delectable flavor profile overall. The chicken was plentiful, and I was more than pleased with the lunch sized portion. 2. Pad thai with chicken- my mom and fiance both ordered this dish, and my mom's was made without oyster sauce and not garnished with the crab rangoon. My mom ordered at a 3 and she found it to be quite flavorful, the chicken was tender, and she still had leftovers to take home with her. My fiance ordered his at a 4, and thought it was perfect with a kick but not overpowering. He felt the dish was a bit heavy on the purple cabbage in the dish. 3. Sriracha spicy noodles with chicken-My brother ordered this at a 4 and thought it was flavorful but really spicy, which is what he wanted. He said if anyone orders this be prepared for heavy spice. 4. Pad phet combo-My dad ordered this and it had chicken, beef, pork, and shrimp with wide noodles and a spicy sauce. He ordered a 3 and said it was flavorful and very tasty. While the food was excellent, the service added to make this a 5 star dining experience! Our server was attentive, friendly, and efficient throughout our meal. The atmosphere here is really nice and we were never rushed even though we had finished eating but were still conversing. The plate presentations are also beautiful, and I loved the little crab rangoon garnish atop the rice (on my plate) or the carrot garnish (on the other plates). I have no complaints about the noise as there was not much of any during our visit even though the dining room was crowded. I did find the lights that were flickering to be slightly distracting, as another reviewer noted. Also, I found it interesting all of the servers and the hostess were wearing phones, presumably because they are all responsible for answering it. While neither of these two things led to a bad experience, they are just something to note. I'd definitely recommend dining in here for the full experience, and I will definitely return upon my subsequent visits to the Burgh. read more

I stopped here with some girlfriends for dinner earlier in the week. Both had been previously and I was excited to try a new spot. Our waitress was attentive but not friendly. We ordered the pad thai, drunken noodles and chicken in ginger sauce. On a scale of 1-5 for heat, we all agreed on a level 2. All three entrees were pretty spicy and we were all enjoying the food but slightly uncomfortable. Both of them said a level 2 was normally not THAT spicy in the past.
