grilled and breaded tenderloins with fries and rings
    Brad T.

**** breaded tenderloin, bit thin but nicely seasoned ** grilled tenderloin, tough and dry **** onion rings, could be a bit crispier ** fries, soft, no crisp, needed second frying *** cole slaw **** service: friendly We'd go again for the breaded tenderloin. I prefer tenderloins that are bun size and not so thick, but it had good seasoning. Unfortunately they wouldn't wrap our order in foil so got styrofoam (an unrecyclable oil based product that should be illegal and is in some states).

    $3.79 of green beans

Just went to Nicks to order some of their green beans for a side dish at home. I can't believe they charged me $3.79 for one order but thought "oh well, prices have went up, but was totally shocked when I seen the size it was.

The Hungryman Skillet at Nick's Restaurant in Anderson, IN.
    Greg H.

If you have read any of my reviews, you will notice that I am a breakfast aficionado. I am always on the look out for new and tried & true places to satisfy my urge for breakfast, and Nick's was the radar this time. Nick's Restaurant in Anderson been a staple of the Northside community since the 1970's at least. Maybe longer. I have to admit that this was my first visit to Nick's ever. I know. I know. I have been like this for many a restaurant icon where I live. This review is about the breakfast I had at Nick's. It is only a reflection on that, nothing more. My choice for breakfast this particular morning was the Hungryman Skillet. The Hungryman Skillet consists of a layer of "homestyle" potatoes, otherwise known as hash browns, onions, green peppers, ham, bacon, sausage, and country gravy. Sprinkled with some shredded cheese over that and then topped with two eggs, any style. Finally it comes with your choice of two buttermilk pancakes, one slice of French Toast, a biscuit, or toast. I also had a cup of coffee and a glass of water. Our server was friendly, helpful, and checked in on us throughout our meal. Our food came out of the kitchen quickly and was hot. It all looked delicious. When it comes to breakfast, I am very critical. My mantra is good food isn't hard, and when food I order falls short, it is disappointing. The Hungryman Skillet is meh. There is a distinct lack of flavor. The potatoes had little or no seasoning, were kind of wet, and not crispy at all. The onions and green peppers were diced very small and were hidden behind the blandness of the country gravy. The country gravy still had a flour taste to it and also had no seasoning. The ham, bacon, and sausgae were also diced/crumbled very small and contributed nothing to the overall dish. Overall, the Hungryman Skillet is a disappointment. Coffee comes a close second to breakfast in my book and may even be ahead at times. I enjpy a good cup of coffee. The dark, rich taste of the coffee beans wakens my senses, and picks my soul up si that I am ready for the day. That is not what the coffee at Nick's is or does I am sad to say, however. The coffee at Nick's tastes like centuries old, "generic" brandname, burnt, brown liquid. I was in the military for sometime so it takes a lot for me to not consume even the poorest of coffee but at Nick's, I pushed my mug aside after the first sip. Even though my breakfast experience at Nick's was not up to par, the other menu items may be great and worth a try. I will return for lunch and diner at some point and let you know what I think about those experiences.

Ask the Community - Nick's Restaurant

Does anyone know if they are owned by same family as 70's/80's? If not do they use same recipe for their fried chicken and onion rings.. thanks

Yes, we still use the same recipes for the pizzas, chicken, tenderloins, and onion rings. No, it is under new ownership since 2011.

I ordered a 4 spicy wing meal with Mac n cheese and potato wedges to go. You go to the dining room area to wait for your food from a pick up window. You can see everything in the kitchen area through that window. Several staff members in the kitchen none of them wearing any gloves and all were handling the food with their bare hands. Best I could tell the only thing not touched by bare human hands was the Mac and cheese. The middle aged lady who ended up handing me my food touched all my wedges with her bare hands then proceeded to pick up my chicken wings and started plucking the pin feathers off the wings and then putting it back in the to go box. Needless to say that entire meal went in the trash when I got home. They also should be ashamed selling tiny pecan pies for $3 They are in my fridge so I can't speak to how they taste but at least they were prepackaged so I know that nobody touched them with their bare hands. These things probably happen more often than I care to imagine but If you are going to have a window where people can watch you in the kitchen then it's probably a good idea to wear gloves and use safe food handling practices.

They also have a good variety of side options, not just fries. We like the music. We enjoy the environment. Our last two visits, however, have been less than pleasant. Some things need management attention. Last time, it was our fault that we arrived a half hour before the dining room closed. Employees want to get home and management wants to limit hours. By that time the crew was deep into cleaning and closing. We were ushered (kindly) into the tables in front. Two closers were mopping, stacking chairs on tables, putting away the condiments counter, just quite busy. Sweeping two feet from our feet felt too close and we feared stirred up dust. Despite assurances, we knew we were in their way and they wanted us gone. Today, we made sure to arrive at supper time, about 5:30. But this time there was no music playing and the whole room was frigidly cold. This was the third day when outside temps were in the mid-70's, therefore minimal air conditioning would have sufficed. But no one had thought to adjust the setting from when it was 80-90 degrees outside. I guess it was 65 degrees in the blasting air. Most customers are senior adults who prefer a mid-70's temp. We were so uncomfortable that we knew we had to leave. We scraped our food into take-home containers and left. Management should solve both these problems. It's simply putting yourself into the customers' shoes. It's just thoughtfulness. That was what was lacking. We'll go back because the food is very good but probably only order through the takeout window. In a while we'll try inside again but third strike and you'll be out.
