grilled and breaded tenderloins with fries and rings
    Brad T.

**** breaded tenderloin, bit thin but nicely seasoned ** grilled tenderloin, tough and dry **** onion rings, could be a bit crispier ** fries, soft, no crisp, needed second frying *** cole slaw **** service: friendly We'd go again for the breaded tenderloin. I prefer tenderloins that are bun size and not so thick, but it had good seasoning. Unfortunately they wouldn't wrap our order in foil so got styrofoam (an unrecyclable oil based product that should be illegal and is in some states).

    $3.79 of green beans

Just went to Nicks to order some of their green beans for a side dish at home. I can't believe they charged me $3.79 for one order but thought "oh well, prices have went up, but was totally shocked when I seen the size it was.

The Hungryman Skillet at Nick's Restaurant in Anderson, IN.
    Greg H.

If you have read any of my reviews, you will notice that I am a breakfast aficionado. I am always on the look out for new and tried & true places to satisfy my urge for breakfast, and Nick's was the radar this time. Nick's Restaurant in Anderson been a staple of the Northside community since the 1970's at least. Maybe longer. I have to admit that this was my first visit to Nick's ever. I know. I know. I have been like this for many a restaurant icon where I live. This review is about the breakfast I had at Nick's. It is only a reflection on that, nothing more. My choice for breakfast this particular morning was the Hungryman Skillet. The Hungryman Skillet consists of a layer of "homestyle" potatoes, otherwise known as hash browns, onions, green peppers, ham, bacon, sausage, and country gravy. Sprinkled with some shredded cheese over that and then topped with two eggs, any style. Finally it comes with your choice of two buttermilk pancakes, one slice of French Toast, a biscuit, or toast. I also had a cup of coffee and a glass of water. Our server was friendly, helpful, and checked in on us throughout our meal. Our food came out of the kitchen quickly and was hot. It all looked delicious. When it comes to breakfast, I am very critical. My mantra is good food isn't hard, and when food I order falls short, it is disappointing. The Hungryman Skillet is meh. There is a distinct lack of flavor. The potatoes had little or no seasoning, were kind of wet, and not crispy at all. The onions and green peppers were diced very small and were hidden behind the blandness of the country gravy. The country gravy still had a flour taste to it and also had no seasoning. The ham, bacon, and sausgae were also diced/crumbled very small and contributed nothing to the overall dish. Overall, the Hungryman Skillet is a disappointment. Coffee comes a close second to breakfast in my book and may even be ahead at times. I enjpy a good cup of coffee. The dark, rich taste of the coffee beans wakens my senses, and picks my soul up si that I am ready for the day. That is not what the coffee at Nick's is or does I am sad to say, however. The coffee at Nick's tastes like centuries old, "generic" brandname, burnt, brown liquid. I was in the military for sometime so it takes a lot for me to not consume even the poorest of coffee but at Nick's, I pushed my mug aside after the first sip. Even though my breakfast experience at Nick's was not up to par, the other menu items may be great and worth a try. I will return for lunch and diner at some point and let you know what I think about those experiences.

Does anyone know if they are owned by same family as 70's/80's? If not do they use same recipe for their fried chicken and onion rings.. thanks

Yes, we still use the same recipes for the pizzas, chicken, tenderloins, and onion rings. No, it is under new ownership since 2011.

I love the small town feel!! The restaurant vibe reflects the town. Everyone is very welcoming. I didn't catch bartenders name, but she was very friendly to everyone at her bar. She told us her favorites on the menu. I appreciated her knowledge about the restaurant and the menu. The bar area seemed a little dark, but that actually enhanced the experience of an old bar. We only sat in the bar area, I believe there is additional seating in another room, but I didn't look. I opted for a grilled tenderloin and a cup of beer cheddar jalapeño cheese soup. The sandwich's are Ala carte. The sandwich was bigger than I expected, that would have been enough for lunch. The trick with grilled tenderloin is that many times it is over cooked, so it is dry. This was cooked to perfection; cooked but still moist. The sandwich, with the "garden" was awesome. Now to the soup. I think she said they use wee Mac as the beer. The jalapeño was puréed. There was crispy bacon crumbled on top; I did not care for the bacon. The soup was odd to me as I was eating it. Because of the texture, it reminded me of corn chowder. There was a little spice/flavor from the jalapeño. What was odd to me, was it didn't wow me like I thought it would, but I kept eating it. So in the end, I think I really liked it bc I ate all of it!!! The menu is not large, but has a good variety for its size. The desserts were impressive, I just didn't have room for it. I could easily become a regular there!!

The space itself is what appears to be an old schoolhouse, and it's incredibly warm and welcoming inside. There's a great mix of seating on the first floor, including community seating near a fireplace, smaller tables, and larger tables for groups. I noticed there's also an upstairs area that I didn't explore, but even just the main level felt homey and comfortable. It's definitely a spot I'd come back to for getting out of the house to work, bringing a laptop, or even meeting friends for a casual coffee date. The vibe is very cozy and inviting, and the staff was friendly and kind. The menu is thoughtfully curated, not overwhelming, but still offers a nice variety of syrups and flavors. My only small wish is that there were more loose-leaf tea options beyond black and green tea, but that didn't take away from the experience. Overall, this was a fantastic visit and a café I'd happily return to.

And at least for the holiday season, the interior looks incredibly cozy and inviting. If you have nowhere to go for a few hours, it would be a nice place to hang out and chat with friends. However, the coffee is fine, not spectacular. And the wait on the Tuesday morning I stopped by was about 25 minutes. Maybe it was quicker in the drive thru, but then you'd miss out on the decorations. Overall, it's a cute enough place to stop by on a day off for a leisurely morning, but I don't know that I would make a special trip.

Very friendly and courteous but his pants and shirt were dirty with food stains. Not a good first impression, for sure. Our waitress came over quickly to take our drink orders and ask if we had any questions about the menu. My wife asked about gluten free (GF) options, and our server promptly brought over a special GF menu Service at this location was excellent, however the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered a three egg omelet with mushroom, tomato and onion, mashed potato with turkey gravy, and fruit cup. Wife ordered baked potato, tomato basil soup, and green beans. The omelet was tasty, but as you can see from the picture, it did not look appetizing. Also, kind of small for a "three egg". The Mash potatoes were the highlight of the meal for me. The fruit cup was awful. yuck. Wife liked the baked potato, but thought the soup and green beans were way too salty. I tried the green beans and had to agree. Ugh.... tasted awful. As you can see from the picture, the soup spoon was dirty, however, the server was quick with a replacement and an apology. In summary, the people who work at this Perkins were friendly funny and attentive and did an excellent job with a pretty good size crowd on a Tuesday afternoon. The food was reasonably priced, but the quality was well below acceptable. We for sure will not be back.

Since I would miss the activities planned for later that week, we both carved out some time to have a small celebration with just the two of us. It was one of those moments that is good for the soul. Every good story needs a great setting. And the context of our story took place at Lincoln Square in Fortville. It was the perfect middle point between our two homes, so it seemed only natural. I had never been to this location. The birthday girl ordered the decadent Banana Bread French Toast. It is topped with fresh banana slices, pecans, caramel sauce and cinnamon whipped butter! I mean, Jesus, take the wheel! I went with a classic Western omelet. You can tell a lot about a place by how they cook the classics. And Lincoln Square did it right. Plus, my omelet came with hash browns and my choice of toast, pancakes, a biscuit or French toast. I felt like it was my final meal before walking the Green Mile! Everything was delicious. We went a little late for most breakfast crowds, so the diner wasn't very busy. Either way, we had great service and the staff were all very kind. I had the feeling that even if they had been busy, you would still be given excellent service with a smile. Like my coffee mug reminded me, every sip counts.
